Plant-Based Foods: Under Attack!

Is there a multi-million dollar misinformation campaign to stop the plant-based food movement in its tracks? The Freedom Food Alliance, led by renowned digital media expert Robbie Lockie, has just released a detailed report which makes that case. Harvesting Denial, Distractions and Deception: Understanding Animal Agriculture's Disinformation Strategies and Exploring Solutions argues that the meat industry - though companies, lobbyists, trade groups, checkoff programs, influencers and so-called experts and industry-backed academics - is waging a full-scale misinformation and disinformation campaign against vegan products and the plant-based movement in general. This is happening at our own peril, as the climate crisis worsens and advertiser-based mainstream media basically ignores one of the biggest causes: animal agriculture. The media runs story after story attacking plant-based meat alternatives as processed while failing to mention that processed meat is officially cancer-causing, according to the World Health Organization. When the World Bank recently called for governments to shift away from subsidizing meat and dairy and embrace alternatives proteins, that urgent recommendation was ignored by mainstream media. So, what can we do to save ourselves, animals and the planet? Let's find out from Robbie Lockie, one of the founders of Plant Based News whose new campaign is getting the real story out to the world before it's too late. Welcome back to another week of the Plant Based News podcast. We have a very special guest on today's episode. Best known for her roles in cult classics such as Clueless and The Crush, our guest on the podcast today is none other than actress, entrepreneur, and vegan advocate Alicia Silverstone. Becoming vegan in her early 20s, she first made the lifestyle change out of consideration for animal welfare. Since the early 2000s, she has been a strong advocate for animal rights and has participated in several PETA ad campaigns promoting veganism. Discovering the health benefits of a plant-based diet, she co-created myKind Organics vitamin line – a certified organic, non-GMO vegan supplement range. The supplements are crafted from real whole foods offering clean nutrition that is good for the environment and good for our bodies. Alicia is now the host of The Real Heal with Alicia Silverstone from iHeartMedia, where she sits down with guests each week to talk candidly about health, healing, and cutting through the noise of our busy lives, covering topics like self-love, nurturing children, ocean conservation and more. She has also chronicled her journey towards a more conscious way of eating in her New York Times bestseller, "The Kind Diet: A Simple Guide to Feeling Great, Losing Weight, and Saving the Planet" and her second book, "The Kind Mama." Her website, thekindlife.com, is a platform for health and eco-living. I am thrilled to welcome Alicia to the Plant Based News podcast and talk about her vegan journey and all things wellness, nutrition, and self-care. Welcome back to another episode of the Plant Based News podcast! This week I am delighted to welcome to the podcast animal advocate and founder of Barn Sanctuary Dan McKernan. Dan's journey of animal advocacy goes back a few years to when he decided to leave a successful, high-paying job in the tech industry in Austin, Texas. He decided to return to his home in rural Michigan and was intent on transforming his family's 140-year-old farm into a safe haven for farmed animals. This is how in 2016 Barn Sanctuary was formed. Barn Sanctuary in Chelsea, Michigan is dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating abused and neglected farmed animals in need. It is currently home to over 100 rescued farmed animals, which reside within the 70-acre property. Barn Sanctuary exemplifies Dan's mission to change the way the world views farmed animals and help lead society towards a more compassionate and plant-based lifestyle. Robbie also shares with us their profound experience that they had while using psilocybin, and what that intense and beautiful moment taught them about climate grief. Robbie offers up a remedy and way for dealing with grief that is important of us all: finding, building, and passing on courage whenever possible. “Grief and sorrow are natural parts of life. Whether the beauty and majesty of this world lasts another day or another six centuries, the fact that it has existed at all is a gift. This week, I caught up with the inspiring activist, Robbie Lockie (pronouns: they/them). It is widely accepted that mainstream media provides insufficient coverage when it comes to topics that don't suit a certain agenda or ‘normalised behaviour'. These topics include gender inequality, a bias towards hetrosexual and cisgender lifestyles being depicted as normal and the negative impact animal consumption has on our health and the environment. Robbie is a natural born activist and has decided to do something about it. Together with Klaus Mitchell, they co-founded and co-directed Plant-Based News www.plantbasednews.org, which is the world's latest online media outlet empowering its readers with information covering all things to do with veganism and plant-based living. Robbie has also produced viral videos for other media outlets, including the charity, Viva! [https://viva.org.uk/] Such as ‘The Dairy Industry's … Trash,' and ‘Swine.' But it doesn't stop there. Robbie is the founder of the annual https://www.worldplantmilkday.com initiative that challenges people to go dairy-free for seven days, and see how they feel afterwards.   Originally from Zimbabwe, Africa, Robbie relocated to London, England in 1999. As an attempt to overcome their health problems back in 2013, Robbie decided to try a plant-based diet to see if it would make any difference. Joining us on the podcast today are Henry Firth & Ian Theasby, co-founders of BOSH! – the vegan platform that has changed how people think about vegan food showing the world how easy plant-based cooking can be. From two mates from Sheffield to a global sensation, dubbed the Bosh! Boys or “the vegan Ant and Dec”, the duo is as close to vegan superstars as you can get. Since launching their first video in June 2016, which received 3.5 million views in the first week alone, they have taken the plant-based world by storm with delicious and easy-to-follow recipe videos and cookbooks. In 2018, their chart-topping signature cookbook BOSH! Became the first vegan cookbook to rise to number 1 in the Sunday Times bestseller chart and since then they have published several cookbooks that further aim to demystify plant-based eating, share inventive recipes, and show how easy and delicious it can be to eat plants. Ian credits a New Year's resolution for the life-changing decision to go vegetarian and then vegan. Henry's journey, similarly, transformed him overnight from an avid meat-eater to a vegan with a personal mission of demonstrating the life-changing effects of plant-based eating and its global impact on reducing climate change. Henry and Ian are a home-taught cook and have always been big foodies, but what really sets them apart is their personal approach and their great passion for making a meaningful difference. Today the BOSH! platform keeps on growing and reaches millions of people online each month. From launching an online sensation reaching more than half a billion people in their first year to becoming the most-viewed and most-loved plant-based recipe channel, BOSH! is a platform for social good that stands for making a difference in the world through a plant-based revolution one delicious meal at a time. Originally from Mexico, Mauricio's journey began first with studying nutrition before deciding to continue onto a medical degree in the US, where he is currently a resident at the Metropolitan hospital in New York. During his studies, he came to realize how little attention is paid to nutrition as part of a more holistic view on health and wellness, which pushed him to switch to a plant-based diet himself and fill the gap he identified between nutrition and medicine. Through his platform Mauricio teaches others how to adopt a healthy plant-based diet and change their lives for the better. As the founder of the first ever plant-based medical immersion program in Latin America, he educates other people including physicians and nutritionists on the health benefits of having a vegan diet and the science behind it. His YouTube channel also reaches thousands of people, inspiring people in Latin American countries and all around the world to make a positive change in their lives. She works at a large law firm, runs 30-40 miles a week, and creates a blog that has over 100,000 followers. On top of that, she's managed to write her first book, which she hopes will be released by Autumn 2021. Joanne also writes poetry and prose, with her writing appearing in Side B Magazine, Cha: An Asian Literary Journal, and The Mashup Americans. Joanne started her blog, The Korean Vegan, in 2016, after switching to a plant-based diet. She's shared stories of her mother's immigration to America, her grandmother's escape from North Korea, interracial dating, and more. Hi Plant Friends, and welcome to a very special episode. Today's show is hosted by PBN Founder Klaus Mitchell. Husband and wife Ali and Lucy Tabrizi are the filmmakers behind the Netflix documentary Seaspiracy - which uncovers the horrors of modern industrial fishing. The film features human impacts on marine life such as plastic marine debris, ghost nets and overfishing around the world. The documentary was one of the top ten most-watched films on Netflix in several countries on the week of its release and generated significant traction on social media. According to the United Nations FAO around 87 percent of the world's fish populations are ‘fully fished' or ‘overfished'. Nearly a third of edible fish populations have declined by 90 percent. That same study says that if biodiversity continues to decline, the marine environment will not be able to sustain our way of life. Indeed it may not be able to sustain our lives at all. The global fishing industry has more than doubled in capacity since 1950. It's now so huge it can't help but destroy our oceans. What Ali and Lucy discovered whilst making Seaspiracy was truly shocking: Fishing has wiped out 90 percent of the world's large fish. More than 300,000 dolphins, whales and porpoises are killed by fishing operations every year. More than $35 billion is paid in subsidies to industrial fishing every year. Fishing kills 30,000 sharks EVERY HOUR. Ali and Lucy sat down with Klaus Mitchell from Plant Based News to talk about some of the questions they've faced, some of the criticisms, and to go through some behind-the-scenes snippets from the Seaspiracy documentary. Since its release in March 2021, Seaspiracy has garnered many reviews worldwide. It soon climbed up the ranks on Netflix in over 30 countries. During our exclusive interview for Plant Based News, Klaus Mitchell asked Ali and Lucy what proportion of the feedback they thought - in terms of the reception of the documentary - has been positive and negative. Hi Plant Friends and welcome to another episode of the PBN Podcast. I am your host Robbie Lockie. On this weeks episode we meet the bubbly and colourful vegan Jasmin Singer. At the age of twenty-four, Jasmin Singer turned to veganism after watching a film about factory farming. Learning about the horrors of the dairy and egg production led her to incorporate animal rights into her LGBTQ+ and feminist activism. Jasmin then began volunteering at PETA's headquarters in Norfolk, Virginia, and began steering her career toward animal rights activism. As well as being a leading expert, Jasmin Singer is now a hugely visible presence within the vegan community. She is a coveted speaker on topics including radical body positivity, personal narrative as a means of social justice, and how to change the world for animals. She is also the author of The VegNews Guide to Being a Fabulous Vegan and Always Too Much and Never Enough: A Memoir. Along with her co-host Mariann Sullivan, Jasmin and her team continue to “change the world for animals” on the long-running, award-winning podcast, Our Hen House. I was fortunate to feature on one of their episodes, I will link it down in the show notes. Jasmin's incredible contribution to animal rights does not stop there. She is the former Senior Editor for VegNews Magazine and the longtime love columnist and celebrity interviewer. In 2020, Jasmin had the enviable job of interviewing actor Joaquin Phoenix, who had used his prominence to not only effectively veganize the menu at the Academy Awards, but also treat his acceptance speech as a way of sharing his concerns for animal rights issues. You may well have seen Jasmin appearing in various documentaries such as The Ghosts In Our Machine and Vegucated. She has also contributed to many anthologies such as Running Eating Thinking; Defiant Daughters; Voices for Animal Liberation; Queer & Trans Voices; and Circles of Compassion. As an actor, Jasmin starred in the film The Bra Mitzvah and has appeared in television commercials. She holds a BFA in Acting from Pace University, and is a certified holistic health counsellor. Jasmin is a long-time activist across many realms, including animal activism, LGBTQ activism, and antiracism. A vegan documentary, which walks through a personal journey, THE LAST PIG raises crucial questions about equality, the value of compassion and the sanctity of life. Comis' soul-bearing narrative carries us through his final year of farming pigs, the struggle to reinvent his life, and the ghosts that will haunt him forever. It is Allison's hope that THE LAST PIG will help propel a shift in our society's relationship to non-human beings and our capacity for compassion. THE LAST PIG is a documentary feature completed in February 2017. The film is currently screening at festivals and independent theaters and will be made available for community screenings starting in July 2017. Distribution of the film to schools, universities, and libraries will be managed by Green Planet Films. The film will be offered for broadcast prior to DVD and VOD release. Fundraising is ongoing, and all support will help finance their extensive outreach efforts. PBN's Robbie Lockie discussed the film and life as a filmmaker with Allison Argo.
