Bible Reading: Proverbs 4:20-27; Matthew 14:22-32Mara climbed up onto the beam Dad had built for her. She was determined to make the school gymnastics team, but after taking a few steps, she wobbled and nearly slipped off. "Focus your eyes on that picture you put up," Mom said. While staring at the picture on the wall across the room, Mara slowly lifted her foot. But when she glanced back at her mother, she tilted to the left and then swayed to the right. She tried to regain her balance, but had to hop down to keep from toppling off the beam. She climbed back up. "I'm gonna get this," she said. "I just have to focus."After dinner that evening, Dad opened his Bible and handed it to Mara. "Why don't you read a few verses from Proverbs for us?" "Okay." Mara took the Bible and began to read. When she finished, she looked up. "Proverbs 4:25 sounds like good advice for gymnastics. I need to look straight ahead and keep my eyes from wandering. Every time I lose my focus, I lose my balance."Mom nodded. "I have trouble with that too.""You do?" Mara grinned. "Do you get up on the beam and practice when I'm not around?"Mom laughed. "No, but I have trouble in another area. As Christians, we need to keep our focus on Jesus so we don't get distracted by things in this world and lose our balance in life."Mara thought about that. "When I practice for gymnastics, I stare at that picture on the wall. But how do we focus on Jesus?""Good question," said Dad. "The passage you just read listed some ways to do that. Do you remember what it said we should do?""I know!" said Mara's little brother. "It said we should pay attention to what God says.""And keep it in our hearts and not let it out of our sight," added Mara.Dad nodded. "Right. That means putting our faith in Jesus and looking to His Word for guidance in our lives. It also means confessing our sins to Jesus and trusting Him for the power to obey Him and show His love to others. Focusing our lives on Him will keep us in perfect balance."–Nance E. Keyes How About You?Do you focus on Jesus as you go about each day? Do you remember all He's done for you and the love and forgiveness you have in Him? Do you trust Him to help you turn from sin and treat others with kindness? There are lots of things that need our daily attention, but don't let them draw you away from what's really important. Stay focused on Jesus and depend on Him to help you in every area of life.Today's Key Verse:Let your eyes look straight ahead; fix your gaze directly before you. What does "Dominion" really mean? The dictionary defines it as "sovereignty or control" but as Christians what does that mean for us? Well, God gave dominion to us as Christians to not walk around this Earth with our tail tucked between our legs, but to enforce our God given dominion in everything we do. We don't have to settle, we don't need to shy away from it, God gave us his authority to walk things out in heaven and on Earth, and that is exactly what this series from pastor Chris is all about, teaching us all about our Dominion in Christ! James 1:1-5 (NIV)Proverbs 4:1-13 (The Message)

Keys For Kids Ministries

Bible Reading: Proverbs 17:27-28; 18:13"Don't quit yet!" Jill begged her friend, but Elsie sat down and began unlacing her skates, saying she was cold. "It's not that cold!" said Jill. Elsie didn't answer, and Jill went back out on the ice."Hey, Jill!" called Mila as she skated by. "My mom is driving some of us to the coffee shop down the street for hot chocolate. Do you and Elsie want to go?""I'll check," said Jill. She spun around and returned to where Elsie was sitting. "Let's go with Mila to get some hot chocolate at the coffee shop--it will be nice and warm there!" But Elsie wasn't interested. Jill sighed. I wish I had come skating with somebody else, she thought. She's no fun at all today! When Jill got home, her mother was stirring a mixture in a bowl. "Oh, yum!" said Jill. "Cheesecake!" She picked up a spoon her mother had been using and quickly took a lick. "Ew!" she said, making a face. "What is this? I thought it was cream cheese."Mom laughed. "It's shortening. You jumped to a conclusion without learning the facts again." Jill knew she often did that.As Mom continued working, Jill told her about the problem with Elsie. "I think she's just looking for attention," said Jill."Are you sure you haven't jumped to another wrong conclusion?" asked Mom. "Maybe something is bothering Elsie and she needs a patient, understanding friend to listen to her and see what's wrong." Jill just shrugged. "If something's wrong, why wouldn't she just tell me?"That evening, Mom came into Jill's room. "Jill, I talked with Elsie's mom a few minutes ago. Elsie's dad left home yesterday.""He did?" said Jill. "Where did he go?" "They don't know. Elsie's mom said he has a problem with alcohol and disappears occasionally. I thought you should know so you can pray for them and be there for Elsie.""Oh no," said Jill. "I did jump to conclusions again! No wonder Elsie was quiet today. When I see her tomorrow, I'll make sure she knows I'm her friend. And I'll pray for her--and for her dad!""I will too," said Mom. "And I'll pray that Elsie will see the love of Jesus in the way you care for her as your friend." –Linda WeddleHow About You?Do you care when a friend doesn't seem happy? Are you understanding and patient when someone doesn't seem interested in what's going on? Instead of jumping to conclusions, be sensitive and show them that you care. Jesus always listens to us, cares for us, and sits with us in tough times. Trust Him to help you be that kind of friend too.Today's Key Verse:Whoever is patient has great understanding, but one who is quick-tempered displays folly. 1 Corinthians 15:33Proverbs 13:20 (NIV)2 Timothy 2:22 (NIV)Proverbs 12:26 (NIV)1 Samuel 23:16 (NIV)

Keys For Kids Ministries

Bible Reading: Proverbs 3:1-6; John 18:36"Uh-oh!" said Mom. "That sign says, 'Detour Ahead.' The ramp to the freeway is closed." She drove on down the street."But we're going away from the freeway," Maggie said as she looked out the window. "We just need to follow the orange detour signs," said Mom. "See if you can find the next one."After they drove a couple of blocks, Maggie pointed and said, "There! It says to turn right--but we'd have to turn left to go in the direction of the freeway. Someone must have switched the signs!""Let's just do what the signs say," said Mom, turning to the right. The next sign also said to go right, and the next said to go right again."We're going in circles," said Maggie. "This can't be right!""Look ahead," said Mom. "There's the freeway. The signs were correct even though they seemed wrong." She turned onto the ramp. "You know what? Someone has given us directions for our lives too, and we have to trust that His directions are right--even if they sometimes seem backwards. Do you know who I mean?"Maggie thought about it. "Dad?"Mom laughed. "He'd be happy to hear that answer, but I was thinking of God. The Bible says, 'It is more blessed to give than to receive,' and, 'A gentle answer turns away wrath.' Compared to what we want or what others might say, those statements may seem wrong.""How about, 'Love your enemies'?" said Maggie. "That was my memory verse last week."Mom grinned. "Here's a good one for us today. 'Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.'""I wish I remembered that verse when I was worried about finding the freeway!" said Maggie.Mom nodded. "God's directions go against the messages we often hear in the world that say to think of ourselves and do what we want. That's because, as Christians, we're called to live like Jesus. He came into our world to save us from sin and bring us into God's kingdom. When we follow God's directions, He will lead us to live in a way that shows we belong to Jesus and are part of His kingdom." –Pauline YoudHow About You?Do God's directions--the instructions He gives in the Bible for how to live--sometimes seem like they don't make sense? That's because the heavenly kingdom Jesus brought to us when He came to earth is very different from how our world does things. Instead of putting yourself first, Jesus says to love others--even your enemies--the way He loves us. Trust God to help you walk in His way of love as you follow His directions. Today's Key Verse:In all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. (NIV) (Proverbs 3:6)Today's Key Thought:Trust God's directions

Who's fired-up and what's on YOUR mind? Today, we are going out to one of my favorite speaking engagements of the entire year for the podcast. I recently went over to my great friend and mentor Pastor David Jeremiah's school and delivered a chapel service to over 1,000 kids. The chapel at Christian Unified schools was revitalized over 7-years ago when Pastor Jeremiah breathed new life into it. It has since become a weekly highlight for the kids. I've been honored to speak at chapel 2x per year for the last 7-years and I love connecting with these kids and bringing some energy, inspiration, and faith-messaging to them. This one is called “What's On Your Mind” and I think you are going to like it. Without further ado, here are the 5 things I talked about at chapel: MINDSET over matter. FAITH over fear. STRENGTH over weakness. WORSHIP over worry. LIGHT over darkness. The kids were enthusiastic, energized, and no doubt LOCKED-IN. Be sure to listen-in and let us know what you think. Bible Reading: Psalm 62:5-8Layla and Benton ran to the car and jumped into the back seat. "Don't forget to buckle up!" said Benton."Way ahead of you!" Layla said as she buckled in. Mom turned around and looked at them. "You two sure are excited about buckling your seat belts today." Layla and Benton looked at each other and started laughing. "Well," said Layla, "we learned about seat belts in church today.""In church?" asked Mom."Yup," said Benton. "In our Sunday school class.""Did you know that trusting God is like wearing a seat belt?" asked Layla."That's a new one to me," said Dad. "Explain.""Mr. Perkins said we have seat belts in our cars to keep us safe--especially in case of an accident," said Benton. "He said that instead of bouncing all over the place when we go over bumpy roads, seat belts keep us secure. He said that's the way it is with trusting God too." "Yeah," said Layla. "These seat belts are always here, but if we never buckle up, it can really be dangerous and scary! God is always here with us too, and He promises to take care of us. But if we don't trust Him, we worry and don't feel secure and safe." "That's a good way of looking at it," said Mom. "Jesus died for us so we could have peace and eternal life with Him. He is always with us to guide and help us, but if we don't trust Him, then we can end up feeling very worried and afraid when times get hard.""Right," said Dad. "Life can be a bumpy road, and trusting Jesus doesn't mean we won't ever feel worried or insecure. It just means that when we do feel that way, we can look to Jesus for peace and remember that He is watching over us." Dad started the car. "Well, I don't know about you guys, but I'm ready for lunch," he said as he put the car in reverse. "Um, Dad," said Layla, "I think you forgot something." "What?" asked Dad. Layla and Benton burst out laughing. "Buckle up!" they shouted. –Ann La CombHow About You?Are you buckled up--do you trust God even when life gets bumpy? Or are you filled with worry and fear when you face problems or when things seem uncertain? We all feel worried and afraid sometimes, but Jesus offers us His peace and promises to be with us. Bible Reading: Philippians 4:4-9; Colossians 3:15-16CRASH! Mae threw one of her toys across the room. Why does everything have to be so difficult? Flopping on her bed, Mae grabbed her stuffed octopus and flipped it inside out. Now it was frowning back at her. "That's how I feel too, Oki." "What happened? I heard a crash." Mom slipped into Mae's room and sat down next to her daughter. "Uh-oh, I see that Oki's face matches yours right now." "I can't get that bracelet right! I even read the instructions and watched that video on it, but it's still not turning out." "Yes, I can see how that would be frustrating. Why didn't you ask for help?" Mae shrugged. "Sometimes I just want to figure it out on my own." Mom nodded and sighed. "I do that sometimes too." "You do?" Mae looked at Mom suspiciously. "How about last week when I got that new mixer and tried to put it together?" "You were really frustrated!" Mae recalled. "Good thing Ben can figure stuff like that out." "Your big brother was very patient and got it working, but I had to ask him first. I also had to ask God for help." Mae's eyes widened. "God helped you put the mixer together?" Mom laughed. "Not physically, no, but He did help me with my attitude. You remember how I was pretty upset with myself when I couldn't figure it out? I could have allowed that frustration to determine my attitude for the rest of my day, but instead I prayed and asked God to help me remember that I have the Holy Spirit in me and can let my attitude reflect His love. I was grumbling and irritable, but with God's help, I chose to focus on what was true, right, and lovely, just like it says in Philippians chapter four." "God helped you flip your attitude," said Mae. Mom nodded. "It's okay to get frustrated, Mae, everyone does. What we do when we're frustrated is what matters. Do we stick with this face and attitude--" Mom grabbed Oki and turned her inside out "--or do we trust God to help us not lose sight of His goodness, love, and promises, even when we feel frustrated?" Mae winked at Mom. "Oki does look better with a smile." –Savannah ColemanHow About You?Do you often get frustrated? When you do, do you let your frustration affect how you think about yourself or the way you treat others? If you are a child of God, you have 24/7 access to His power in you. That means you can fix your mind on things that are good, right, and true, even when you feel frustrated or angry. Trust Him to help you clothe yourself with attitudes and actions that reflect His love.Today's Key Verse:A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones. Welcome to Passionate Life Church! This week we are blessed to have Dee Dee sharing the importance of boundaries in your life. Join us this Sunday! ----------------------------------------------------- What are Boundaries? Why are boundaries important as Christians? Did Jesus set boundaries? Yes! He condemned the religious leaders who were hypocritical and disregarded God's laws: Matthew 23:27-28 NIV Jesus also set personal boundaries by taking time for solitude and prayer: Mark 1:35 NIV He refused to perform miracles for those who demanded them as a sign: Matthew 12:38-39 NIV Jesus taught his disciples about the importance of forgiveness and reconciliation, but also emphasized the need to confront and address sin within the community: Matthew 18:15-17 NIV Boundary Myths: Boundaries are selfish: Boundaries are barriers to intimacy: Boundaries are rigid and inflexible: Boundaries are unnecessary in close relationships: Setting boundaries means confrontation: Why do we struggle to set boundaries? Lack of assertiveness skills Fear of conflict or rejection Enmeshment or codependency Lack of support or validation Low self-esteem, guilt, or fear of being selfish. Boundary sayings: “Just because you can, doesn't mean you should”. “Where do I end and someone else begins?” (differentiation) “Don't work harder than them”. “Your disappointment is not a consequence for someone's bad behavior”. “If you are consistently overly responsible in a relationship you allow the other person to be under responsible” Boundary Truths: When we try to please others without taking God's instructions we make an agreement with the enemy When we don't set boundaries we give up our voice and relinquish our authority Do nothing out of Fear or Shame Be a Truth Teller. You have the fruits of the Spirit so that you can speak the Truth in Love This world is filled with traps…people who will steal our peace and wear us out “energy vampires” Lack of boundaries and over stepping boundaries are both generational sins God calls us to be emotionally strong and healthy. We are to fight the battle He has set before us. We are to be alert, stay in His Word, and listen for His instructions and strategies. We are to know our value and worth, be honest with ourselves, face hard things and be brave enough to have difficult conversations with others. Bible Reading: Proverbs 11:25; Philippians 2:1-4Juan noticed a boy sitting by himself in the school cafeteria. He's new here, and he must be lonely, Juan thought, remembering how he had felt when he was the new kid at school the year before. When Juan finished eating his lunch and was ready to go outside for recess with his friends, he stopped at the door. I'm going back to talk to that kid, he decided.Juan slid onto the bench across from the boy. "Hi," he said. "I'm Juan. What's your name?""My name is Haneul," replied the boy."Where are you from?" asked Juan."South Korea," Haneul answered."Want to play ball with us?" Juan asked. Haneul nodded enthusiastically.Juan wasn't sure what made him do it, but as they left to go home after school, he invited Haneul to come over to his house. Haneul looked pleased, and they both checked to make sure it was okay with their parents.Hanging out with Haneul turned out to be more fun than Juan expected. The boys played basketball and ping-pong and built a fort in the basement. Soon Juan and Haneul became good friends. Their families also met each other, and the boys often visited each other's houses. At Haneul's house, Juan was served Korean food and learned to eat with chopsticks. He also learned some fascinating things about Korean culture."I'm so glad I decided to talk to Haneul when he first came to our school," Juan told his dad one day. "Every time I go to his house, I feel like I'm taking a trip to South Korea.""Whoever refreshes others will be refreshed," Dad said with a smile."What does that mean?" asked Juan."It's from the Bible, and it means that generosity works like a boomerang--when we give to others out of what God has given to us, God blesses us for it," Dad explained. "You were willing to give your time and attention to Haneul when he was new and didn't know anyone, and you're receiving a special blessing in return--knowledge about another culture and a true friend." Dad smiled at Juan. "Through Jesus, we have God's love in our hearts, and when we share that love with others by showing them kindness, God often blesses those relationships and helps them grow stronger." -Matilda H. NordtvedtHow About You?Have you found that treating others well helps you make friends and develop good relationships? Maybe it doesn't always seem that way. But when you treat others with the love and kindness God has shown you, most people will likely respond in a good way. Keep sharing God's love with others, and trust Him to bless those interactions and help them grow into beautiful friendships. Today's Key Verse:A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed. (NIV) (Proverbs 11:25 )Today's Key Thought:Share God's love with others

Bible Reading: John 14:1-6As August walked down the hallway at school, he saw a little boy crying up ahead. An older girl August's age was talking to him. "Don't cry, I know how to get to Miss Shelby's classroom," August heard the girl say as he got closer. "You go that way until you get to the gym, then turn right and go three doors down, and that's Miss Shelby's room." August frowned. Those directions weren't right! As the girl went on her way, August approached the little boy. "Hey, you're new here, aren't you?" The boy looked at him, wide-eyed, and nodded. "That girl gave you wrong directions," said August. "You have to turn left at the gym, not right." The boy's lip began to tremble, and August patted his shoulder. "Look," he said, "I'll take you there. Okay?" The boy smiled and nodded, and soon August had delivered him to his classroom. When August got home later that day, he told his mom what had happened. "I'm glad you were there to help," said Mom. "By the way, Milo's mom texted me. Milo wants you to go to Bible club with him tomorrow night. I hope you'll go.""Okay," said August. "But Mom, I wish you'd quit worrying about whether I'm going to heaven." His mom had recently become a Christian, and she often tried to talk to him about trusting in Jesus too. "I'll be there," August said with a smirk. "Uncle Scott says I'm such a good kid that if anybody makes it to heaven, it'll be me!""Well, I agree with Uncle Scott that you're a good kid," said Mom. "But he's wrong about the way to heaven. I'm afraid you're like that little boy at school. He was ready to follow directions from someone who didn't really know the way." Mom paused for a moment. "God tells us how we can be saved and have eternal life. His Word--the Bible--says it's not people's goodness that will get them to heaven. You were that boy's way to his class--you took him there. And Jesus is the only way to heaven. We need Him to save us and make us right with God so we can spend eternity with Him."August was startled. Maybe Mom's right, he thought. I need to make sure I'm going the right way. - Mary Rose PearsonHow About You?Are you following the right directions to heaven? God's directions are the only ones that can be trusted, and they're found in His book, the Bible. He says Jesus is the way--the only way--to be saved from sin and have eternal life. Don't be fooled into thinking you can get to heaven any other way. Trust in Jesus today. Bible Reading: Ephesians 4:29; James 3:5-10"Look what Otis did!" Maria showed her father her soggy, torn slipper. "I scolded him and put him outside.""I'm sorry, honey," Dad said as he took the mangled slipper. "I can see that little puppy needs a lot more training."Mom spoke from the doorway. "Maria, Iris is on the phone for you." She held out her phone.A few minutes later, Maria's voice boomed from the kitchen. "You always want me to do all the work, Iris. You're so lazy! I'm never doing a school project with you again.""What was that about?" asked Mom when Maria returned her phone. "I thought Iris was your best friend.""She…she just caught me at a bad time," mumbled Maria."Did your sister catch you at a bad time too?" asked Mom. "I heard you yell at her this morning."Maria blushed. "She always bothers me when I'm tired. But I told her I was sorry." Maria brightened. "I'll call Iris back and apologize to her."Just then Otis whined at the door. "I think Otis wants to come in and apologize too," said Dad, handing the chewed-up slipper to Maria.Maria looked at it. "Don't let him in," she grumbled crossly. "My slipper is ruined because of him."Dad nodded. "You know, Maria, even if you forgive Otis and let him in, it won't fix your slipper. That's mangled for good." "I know that," said Maria. "That's why I'm mad at him!""Well, feelings can be mangled just like your slipper," said Dad. "Once you've said something, it really can't be taken back. You can be sorry and say so, but the words have already hurt. Often there is no way to repair the damage.""That's right," said Mom. "There are several people you need to apologize to, but even if they forgive you, you've still hurt their feelings. You need to be more careful to control your tongue and not say hurtful things in the first place.""But I…I don't know how," said Maria."Think before you speak," said Dad. "When you feel angry, count to ten before you say anything. Most of all, remember that Jesus gives you the ability to love others the way He does. Trust Him to help you speak in love, not anger." -Harriett A. DurrellHow About You?Do you say things you don't mean? It's so easy to do. The Bible has a lot to say about how much trouble your tongue can cause. It also gives the cure--let the love of Christ in your heart control what you say. If you've had trouble controlling your tongue, apologize to those you've hurt. Then use your words to encourage others and solve problems in a loving way.Today's Key Verse:The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing. Bible Reading: Ephesians 4:29-32I didn't do anything wrong, Hayley thought as she stared at the TV, wiping away tears. Her dad never yelled at her like that. She had just been singing. He had told her before that he loved to hear her sing."Aren't you going to eat with us?" Hayley's older brother peeked into the room.Hayley shook her head. "I'm not hungry.""What's wrong?" Mikey walked over to her.Hayley's brother was a teenager. He would think she was stupid for crying. "Nothing.""Something is wrong, Hay." Mikey sat down beside her. "Spill.""Fine." Hayley closed her eyes. "Dad yelled at me in the car. He told me to shut up.""What?" Mikey looked shocked."I was just singing. And we're not supposed to say that." Hayley started to cry again.Mikey hugged her. "I'll save you some dinner in case you're hungry later."Hayley rested on the couch with her eyes closed, her dad's words playing over and over in her head, until she heard footsteps come into the room. She peeked her eyes open as her dad knelt on the floor beside the couch."Mikey told me you're upset," Dad said. "I was really stressed in the car. The traffic was bad and I was trying hard to focus." He brushed her hair back from her face. "I should have asked you nicely if you could be quiet instead of yelling at you.""You hurt my feelings," Hayley said."I know, and I'm sorry." Dad sighed. "It's like how you sometimes get angry if your brother makes a lot of noise while you're trying to practice for your recital. Sometimes we let anger take over when we're nervous and say hurtful things. But we don't have to let that happen. We can trust God to help us control our anger instead of letting it control us."Hayley knew her dad was right--she sometimes got angry when she was stressed too. She just hadn't expected that from him. "If God helps us control our anger, why did you let it control you?"Dad gave her a sad smile. "I'm not perfect. God's still working on me. I let anger take control today, but I'm glad I can always depend on God to forgive me and help me do better. I hope you'll forgive me too." -Emily AckerHow About You?Do you sometimes let anger take over? Do you yell or say hurtful things? Many people come to God expecting a quick miracle that will make everything better. What the Bible actually emphasizes is "building," which is a long-term view of life. Those whose lives collapse almost always have ignored building the emotional aspect of their spiritual lives—they were not willing to dig down deep. Building or rebuilding our emotional lives will allow us to grow our character as we walk with God and develop our strength from the inside out. "Poison dart frogs can be dangerous if you don't handle them properly."Dad and the boys, now armed with a bucket and gloves, went back to the stream in search of the frog. They quickly found the bright orange and blue frog perched on a rock. Together they captured the little creature in their bucket. "Boys, this tiny frog is oozing poison. In fact, animals that eat these frogs can get very sick, and many die from the toxic poison. Since it's on the frog's skin, touching it could be very painful if the poison got into a cut or open wound.""Oh boy!" said Carlos. "These frogs are bad news!""They aren't all bad," said Dad. "Scientists are trying to develop medicine using some of these little guys. They think the toxins could be used in good ways like in anesthesia and muscle relaxants."Miguel looked puzzled. "So these frogs can be both deadly and helpful?""That's right," said Dad. "It just depends on how they're used." He peered into the bucket to look at the little frog. "You know, poison dart frogs always make me think of our tongues," Dad said."I'm sure not going to lick this frog!" Carlos said with a laugh.Dad smiled. "I wouldn't recommend that. But just like this poison dart frog can be both harmful and helpful, our tongues have the power to speak hurtful or encouraging words. The Bible says that both death and life are in the power of the tongue, so we have to choose to use our words in the right way. We need to remember that we belong to Jesus and speak in a way that reflects His goodness and love."Miguel looked in the bucket. "Well, little poison dart frog, you will be a good reminder to use my words to help people, not hurt them." -Kendra AngleHow About You?Do your words bring help or harm to those around you? The Bible says our words are very powerful. We can use that power in a good way to show others the love of Jesus, or we can speak harsh, unkind words that hurt people's feelings. Jesus always helps and encourages us through His words in the Bible, and He wants us to speak words that lift people up, not tear them down.Today's Key Verse:The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit. Bible Reading: Proverbs 3:13-15; 9:10When Malik got home from school, he plopped down on the couch and eagerly turned on the TV to watch the next episode of a show called "Treasures of the Deep." It was about the discovery of treasures found in the sea, and Malik loved to imagine what it would be like to find treasure and get rich.Halfway through the show, Dad walked in. "What show is this that you've been so interested in lately?" he asked.Malik hit the pause button, and his eyes shone as he told his dad all about the treasures found in the ocean and how he hoped he could be a treasure hunter someday. "I like the water, so I think it would be great to hunt treasure deep down in the ocean."Dad smiled. "Why not start hunting treasure right now?""How can I hunt treasure now?" Malik asked in disbelief.Mom came in and set a plant by the window. "I think your dad's teasing you."Dad laughed. "I guess I am--a little. But you actually can hunt treasure of a different kind right now--wisdom.""Oh, that's right," said Mom. "The book of Proverbs describes wisdom as being more precious than gold or valuable jewels. You could hunt wisdom, Malik.""How do I do that?" asked Malik. "By studying hard in school?""That is important," Dad said, "but another verse in Proverbs says, 'The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.' We can only have wisdom by knowing God, and He reveals Himself to us in the Bible. It tells us about His goodness and greatness and power and how we need to trust in Jesus to be saved from sin. The Bible is full of treasures from God. You can dig deep into it by reading it yourself and by listening when we learn about it together at church.""Right!" Mom nodded. "It's okay to dream of being a treasure hunter as long as you know the treasure of wisdom is far more precious than anything you'd ever find in the ocean."Malik grinned. "I'll start treasure-hunting as soon as this episode is over! The book of Proverbs sounds like a good place to start." -Vicki L. ReinhardtHow About You?Do you want to be a treasure hunter? There's no greater treasure than the wisdom that comes from God. In order to have that wisdom, the Bible says you need to know Jesus as your Savior. (To learn more, click the "Good News!" button in the right column of this page.) Then, as you read the Bible and learn about it at church, He will fill you with the wisdom of His truth and promises. Psalm 34:8 Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him. (NIV)  James 1:16–17 Don’t be deceived, my dear brothers and sisters. 17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. (NIV) James 1:25 But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don’t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it. (NLT)  Psalm 84:11 For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor; no good thing does he withhold from those whose walk is blameless. (NIV) Psalm 84:12   Lord Almighty, blessed is the one who trusts in you. (NIV) Psalm 62:8   Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge. (NIV) Proverbs 3:9–10 Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops; 10 then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine. (NIV)  4 Top Reasons People Are Reluctant To Tithe 1. Tithing is under the law Romans 6:14 For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace. (NIV) Romans 6:1–2 What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? 2  By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? (NIV) Romans 2:13 For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God’s sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous. (NIV) Romans 3:31   Do we, then, nullify the law by this faith? Not at all! Rather, we uphold the law. (NIV) Romans 7:12   So then, the law is holy, and the commandment is holy, righteous and good. (NIV) Matthew 15:19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. (NIV) 2. Jesus didn’t talk about tithing 2A. Jesus did talk about tithing Matthew 23:23   “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices—mint, dill and cumin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law—justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former. (NIV) Luke 11:42   “Woe to you Pharisees, because you give God a tenth of your mint, rue and all other kinds of garden herbs, but you neglect justice and the love of God. You should have practiced the latter without leaving the former undone. (NIV) Luke 18:12 I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.’ (NIV) Matthew 6:19–21 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20  But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21  For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. (NIV) 3. I don’t trust the church 2 Corinthians 8:21   For we are taking pains to do what is right, not only in the eyes of the Lord but also in the eyes of man. (NIV) Malachi 3:10   Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the LORD Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it. (NIV) 4. Bible Reading: Proverbs 15:1, 4; Ephesians 4:29-32"Hey, Steve! Check out the progress I've made on my coloring book!" Miffed by his little sister's insistent nudge, Steve barked a quick-tempered, "Not now, Lily! Can't you see I'm trying to sleep?""Guys, please try to get along," Mom chimed in. "We'll be at our next stop in just a few hours.""A few hours? You mean, for all that time, I have a choice between staring at cows or having to comment on coloring technique?"Just as Steve let out a big sigh, a large dump truck pulled in front of his family's van. He could just make out the words on the back, which read, "Driver not responsible for flying debris. Stay back.""What?" Steve exclaimed. "Did you see that sign? How can a truck launch a rock or whatever out the back of it and be completely inculpable?"Dad, using an over-the-shoulder lane check to make brief eye contact with his son, said, "First of all, I can tell you've been working on those vocab words, so well done." Steve cracked a grin. He'd recently learned that inculpable was another word for innocent or blameless."And I'm glad you caught those words on that truck, because they remind me of something that happened just a few moments ago when you snapped at your sister," Dad continued. "I know you're tired. We're all tired and cranky right now, but you chose to throw gentleness out the window because of that. If you think about it, it's not much different from a truck not being responsible for what flies out of it at any moment, right?"Steve was completely caught off guard. "I…I guess."Dad smiled in the rearview mirror. "That truck may not claim responsibility for what comes flying out of it, but we're responsible for our words and attitudes toward others. And, because we trust in Jesus, we can control them. We have the power of the Holy Spirit, who helps us speak kind, loving words--even when we're cranky."Pulling his gaze off a sea of bovines--another vocab word that meant cows--Steve shifted toward his sister. "Lily, I blew it. I let my words fly at you. I'm bored and tired, but that's no excuse for how I spoke to you just now. Will you forgive me?""Course!" Lily grinned. "Want a gummy bear?" -Sara WoodardHow About You?Have you ever hurled unkind words at someone? Like rocks blown off a truck, flying words can cause serious damage and hurt people. But if you know Jesus, He gives you the power to control your words. Trust Him to help you speak to others with love and kindness--even when you feel tired and cranky. Choose to make rest a non-negotiable rhythm in your life. Genesis 2:2 (NIV)   Proverbs 3:7-8 (NIV) Rest is not vacating our reality - but reordering it around Christ. Rest is not the absence of activity - but the presence of partnership with the Lord. “If we have to resist rest to maintain momentum, it's not the Lord's energy we are trusting”. – Zack Eswine Rest is the foundation of work - not the other way around. Rest is best experienced from slowing - not always sprinting. Matthew 11:28-30 (NIV) 2 invitations from Jesus: 1. Come to me. 2. Take my yoke upon you. “The Sermon on the Mount is not a set of principles to be obeyed apart from identification with Jesus Christ. The Sermon on the Mount is a statement of the life we will live when the Holy Spirit is getting his way with us.” In other words, no one ever says, “If you want to be a great athlete, go vault eighteen feet, run the mile under four minutes,” or “If you want to be a great musician, play the Beethoven violin concerto.” Instead, we advise the young artist or athlete to enter a certain kind of overall life, one involving deep associations with qualified people as well as rigorously scheduled time, diet, and activity for the mind and body.” - Oswald Chambers

Bible Reading: Ephesians 5:1-4, 8"What's wrong, Simon?" asked Micah as the boys walked home from school."I don't want to talk about it," said Simon with a scowl. "You'll just laugh.""No, I won't. We're friends. Come on, Simon. Tell me what's bothering you.""Well…" Simon took a deep breath. "Some of the guys found out my middle name is Thomas, which means my first two initials are S and T--ST. Since that's the abbreviation for Saint and my last name is Bernard, they all started calling me Saint Bernard--like I was one of those great big Saint Bernard dogs! They barked at me and everything."Micah tried not to grin. "Don't let it bother you--they'll get over it." As he thought about it, however, he couldn't resist making a joke. "Wait till I tell everyone I walk the dog home from school every day!" Simon looked at Micah in disbelief. "You said you wouldn't laugh, and I trusted you!" he said angrily, and he began running home."Hey, I was only joking!" Micah called after him. "You know I won't really tell them that!" But Simon was gone. For several days, Simon refused to walk home with Micah or even talk to him. He's just being stubborn, thought Micah, but it really bothered him.One morning as Micah read the Bible passage that went along with the lesson in his devotional book, he came to these verses: "Like a maniac shooting flaming arrows of death is one who deceives their neighbor and says, 'I was only joking!'"Uh-oh, thought Micah. That sounds like the way I treated Simon. He sighed. I really hurt his feelings by making that joke, especially since I told him he could trust me. He turned to a passage in Ephesians he had read a few days before. These verses say to follow Jesus's example and love others because He loved us so much He sacrificed Himself to save us. But I wasn't very loving toward Simon. I've got to ask him to forgive me. So Micah went downstairs, ate a hasty breakfast, and grabbed his books."What's the big hurry?" asked his mom as he dashed past her."God reminded me I have something important to do," said Micah. "I'll explain later." And he ran all the way to Simon's house. -Sara L. NelsonHow About You?Do you sometimes tease kids about things that bother them? When you're tempted to tease, remember today's Key Verse. Making jokes is not okay when it hurts someone. The Bible says to imitate Jesus, who loves us so much He died for our sins. Trust Him to help you be kind, caring, and trustworthy like He is, and if you've hurt someone by teasing them, apologize and ask them to forgive you.Today's Key Verse:Like a maniac shooting flaming arrows of death is one who deceives their neighbor and says, "I was only joking!" (NIV) (Proverbs 26:18-19)Today's Key Thought:Don't hurt others by teasing
