(Note: this episode originally ran in 2019.)In the 1800s, catching your train on time was no easy feat. Every town had its own "local time," based on the position of the sun in the sky. There were 23 local times in Indiana. 38 in Michigan. Sometimes the time changed every few minutes. This created tons of confusion, and a few train crashes. But eventually, a high school principal, a scientist, and a railroad bureaucrat did something about it. They introduced time zones in the United States. It took some doing--they had to convince all the major cities to go along with it, get over some objections that the railroads were stepping on "God's time," and figure out how to tell everyone what time it was. But they made it happen, beginning on one day in 1883, and it stuck. It's a story about how railroads created, in all kinds of ways, the world we live in today. This episode was originally produced by Alexi Horowitz-Ghazi and edited by Jacob Goldstein. Yep, a couple of days into September and Scotland really has decided that it's Autumn now, all of a sudden it's fucking Autumn. Cold, crappy rain, wind, all the usual fun and games. Season OVER! We are into shitty territory now, just you accept it! Anyhow, I have never figured out whether good (more likely to leave the house) or bad weather (more likely to want to be inside in a venue) weather is more likely to lead to good gig attendances, but I suppose it's always nice to have the excuse either way if no-one turns up to your gig. One nice thing about the weather turning shitty, of course, is that the fucking builders who repaired our roof - Traditional Roofing and Building - whilst excellent in every other respect, managed to paint my office windows shut and are ignoring my requests to come out and fix them. So at least if it's cold I won't just be sat up here fucking sweltering all day. Enjoy the tunes! 01. Temple Songs - Passed Caring (00.16)02. John Murry - Southern Sky (07.45)03. This is the first class of a course on the close reading of poetry. It will consist, at least for the first half, of intense reading of poems for as long as is necessary, with no time pressure. It's not a course designed to get you reading a lot; it's designed to get you thinking a lot. We start out with some lullabies, first with Auden's Lullaby Lay your sleeping head, my love, Human on my faithless arm; Time and fevers burn away Individual beauty from Thoughtful children, and the grave Proves the child ephermeral: But in my arms till break of day Let the living creature lie, Mortal, guilty, but to me The entirely beautiful. Soul and body have no bounds: To lovers as they lie upon Her tolerant enchanted slope In their ordinary swoon, Grave the vision Venus sends Of supernatural sympathy, Universal love and hope; While an abstract insight wakes Among the glaciers and the rocks The hermit's sensual ecstasy. Certainty, fidelity On the stroke of midnight pass Like vibrations of a bell, And fashionable madmen raise Their pedantic boring cry: Every farthing of the cost, All the dreadful cards foretell, Shall be paid, but from this night Not a whisper, not a thought, Not a kiss nor look be lost. Beauty, midnight, vision dies: Let the winds of dawn that blow Softly round your dreaming head Such a day of sweetness show Eye and knocking heart may bless. Find the mortal world enough; Noons of dryness see you fed By the involuntary powers, Nights of insult let you pass Watched by every human love.

It's a really packed show this week. We begin by discussing last week's WEC 50 and Strikeforce: Houston events, and as usual, we rage out on Strikeforce for far too long. Then we preview the upcoming UFC 118 card headlined by BJ Penn vs. Frankie Edgar, and Randy Couture vs. James Toney. We also fit in a little news, including info on an Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen rematch, and some domestic issues with Rumble Johnson.
