Hello everyone, This is Mirko Guerrini, and I welcome you to the Jazz Transcription Clinic, a monthly interviews podcast where we talk with accomplished jazz doctors about their lives, careers and their personal transcription secrets. On this episode of the Jazz Transcription Clinic Podcast Mirko Guerrini interviews the guest jazz doctor: Stephen Magnusson Listen to Steve Magnusson's answers to the questions below: Why do you transcribe? 03:47 What do you expect to learn from a transcription? 17:41 How do you choose the solos to transcribe? 24:21 What is your transcribing methodology? 33:08 Do you use any software? 45:45 Which transcription of yours is your favourite? 01:09:05 Artists mentioned in this episode: Pat Metheny, Herbie Hancock, Dmitri Sostakovic, Charlie Parker, Charles Lloyd, Charlie Haden, John Scofield, Brad Mehldau, Sonny Rollins a.o.   Stephen Magnusson is considered one of Australia's most accomplished, versatile and distinct musicians with incredible technique and an astoundingly beautiful tone. His hectic schedule shows that he is a delight to work with and someone that has ‘something to say' in the world of improvised music. He was given his first ukulele at 3, his first guitar at 6 and began performing at 10 on an electric guitar that he loaned from his schoolteacher. At 13, he started to study under the guidance of Gordon Pendleton at the Box Hill Tafe and discovered the world of improvised music. In 1986, he studied at the esteemed Victorian College of the Arts under the supervision of some of Australia's finest musicians – Tony Gould, Bob Sedergreen and Mike Doyle. Here he expanded his practice regime and playing. He joined various bands playing numerous styles and developed an understanding of different methods. But, his main focus remained, to develop and hone the craft of mastering the guitar. He travelled to Europe and lived there and after being appointed on the staff at The Academy of Contemporary Music (Zurich) in 1997, Stephen met his long time collaborator – Sergio Beresovsky. They began to perform regularly with Swedish bassist – Bjorn Meyer and in the July of the same year, Australian saxophonist Julien Wilson travelled to meet and play with the trio. After the first week of playing, they formed SNAG and produced a self-titled album (released in Australia ‘Hey Guess What'). After 3 years of living in Zurich, Stephen returned to Melbourne in August 2000. He entered the National Jazz Award at Wangaratta Jazz and Blues Festival, where he tied for first place amongst much controversy. At this festival, he performed with his trio featuring Sergio and Eugene Ball. This recorded result is captured on the CD ‘Healing Songs'. He has worked with many artists including Charlie Haden, Meshell Ndegeocello, Ricki Lee Jones, Sinead O'Connor, John Cale, Gurrumul Yunupingu, Paul Grabowsky, Vince Jones, Katie Noonan, Lisa Young, Christine Sullivan, Michelle Nicole, Martin Breeze, The Assumptions Trio, Megan Washington, Paul Kelly, Jim Black, Mike Nock, Barney McAll, Enrico Rava, Arthur Blythe and many others. As a part of the Katie Noonan trio Elixir, the ensemble won the ARIA for Best Jazz Album in 2011. In 2013, Stephen was awarded the Melbourne Prize for Outstanding Musician, and the Australian Jazz Bell Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Album with his quartet MAGNET (with Carl Pannuzzo, Eugene Ball and Sergio Beresovsky). Stephen is currently concentrating on writing for his duo Boundaries with Frank DiSario, and trio MAG featuring DiSario and Dave Beck. He will also be completing the second release from MAGNET, SOM. Sunny Smith is the solo project of Sydney-based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Chris Smithson (The Kava Kings, Caravana Sun). Chris released his debut track, Ziggy, under the moniker in November 2020 with a five-track EP slated for release in early 2021. A debut eight years in the making, Chris first knew music was for him when he skipped out on a year 10 trial exam to go on tour with his band, The Kava Kings and hasn't looked back from massive international festival stages across Germany to a disorganised show at a public pool in Italy. Chris isn't new to the scene with three European tours under his belt with The Kava Kings and Caravana Sun supporting follow big acts, The Skatalites (Jamaica) and Ozomatli (USA) . As well as wearing a track around Australia having supported John Butler, Lime Cordiale, Birds of Tokyo, Ocean Alley and The Beautiful Girls. Inspired by Tame Impala, Gorillaz and Neil Young with a slice of Andy Shauf, Blake Mills, Ethan Gruska and Whitney thrown in the mix inspired Chris to create the sound that is Sunny Smith. The dreamy three minute thirty track lives up to the Sunny Smith name transporting you to beachside scenes with musing of the future. Ziggy explores the feeling of anemoia, that nostalgic feeling for a time you've never known, and is inspired by the many stages of life, the different goals we all aspire to big and small culminating at that moment where you crossover from person to parent. Written during a self-described songwriting drought, Ziggy was the muse to allow Sunny Smith to pour his heart into “the most honest writing I've ever done”. This underpinned honesty coupled with inspiration from the likes of Andy Shauf, Blake Mills and The Police create a dreamy track perfectly timed for you to walk to and create your own sense of anemoia. Sunny Smith jumped into the studio with Sydney drummer and producer legend, Declan Kelly (Bernard Fanning, Katie Noonan, Kasey Chambers) to bring Ziggy to life. “The morning we started on Ziggy, Declan thought we should lay down a guide drum track to create a good foundation for the song. We both loved that take so much we kept it, and the song grew from that point on. The beat doesn't change for the whole song. It's just so nice when something unplanned becomes such an integral part of a song.” Chris Smithson, SunnySmith. Visit www.onespace.love

Katie Noonan's pure angelic voice makes her one of Australia's most versatile and beloved vocalists. A mother, singer, producer, songwriter, pianist and business woman, this ARIA award winning and platinum selling songstress, first received widespread praise as the angel-voiced songstress of indie-pop band George, and has since taken audiences on sublime excursions through Jazz, Pop and Classical music.Named one of the greatest Australian singers of all time by the Herald Sun, Katie has performed by invitation for Australian and international Prime Ministers, members of the Royal Family and His Holiness The Dalai Lama, as well as across Australia, the USA, Canada, Europe and South East Asia. With a buttery, velvet voice that can transform almost any song into a melodic lullaby or soothing soulful rendition, her 20 th album, 'The Sweetest Taboo' released this year, has given Katie's listeners a taste of their younger years, with unique covers of iconic 1980s pop songs. Get ready you'll be dancing in your bedroom, hairbrush mic in hand to Katies renditions of classic Whitney, “I want to dance with somebody,,” transformed into a sultry, soulful sound, Or to her cover of Crowded Houses “Dont Dream it's Over” - honestly one of the best versions I've heard. Her grandfather was a singing clown, her grandmother and mother an opera singer and her father a jazz crooner who toured with Johnny O'keefe .. so music is in her veins.Katie reflects on The four pillars Of our community - the critical role of the ArtsThe Opera house The TheatreThe Ballet The Music Auditorium Nominated for another ARIA Best Jazz Album, Katie said the nomination was just as special as the first time. “The album has been in the ARIA Top Ten Jazz and Blue charts for over 20 weeks and it has only been out about that long,“ she said.“So, it's very special and just to be shortlisted for the award is incredible.“You've already kind of won if you've been shortlisted because that means your peers think this record is in the top five of the year, which is extraordinary.“Favourite albums Blue Album - Joni Mitchell Cross-Over - Emma Donovan Let Love Rule - Archie Roach Scratch My Back - Peter Gabriel Favourite Book You're Own Kind Of Girl - Claire Bowditch CREDITS:Executive Producer & host: Deborah Blashki-Marks (mindfilmandpublishing.com.au) Podcast Audio Producer:Sophie Jackson (Soundstreet.com.au) Artwork:Sam Moses (www.samanthamoses.com)Original music:Jonah OrbachVoice Recording:Matia Marks Design:Rachel Mcarthy (rachelmccarthy@live.com.au

Critically acclaimed Emily Lubitz is at the helm of acclaimed indie folk band Tin Pan Orange. Together with her brother Jesse, their stylised folk music is described by Rolling Stone magazine as “deep dives into heart sleeved honesty equally matched by the cinematic stretches of detailed string arrangements and brooding folk pop features”. She also works closely with her husband Harry Angus of “The Cat Empire” fame.In 2018 Tin Pan Orange worked with Meg Mac and Courtney Barnett's producer to create a suite of new tracks. They've toured with indie legends Martha Wainwright, iconic The Cat Empire, and Emily's voice was heard by 120 million people singing the train sensation “Dumb Ways To Die.”“So for those of you haven't heard Emily's “brushed velvet voice” as described by the Melbourne Age .. here's your chance ..As part of the Festival of Jewish Arts and Music, Emily joins a stellar lineup of talented women singing and paying tribute to the legendary Leonard Cohen. Mick Young (aka Young Werther) makes music that wraps you in its arms and slowly seeps into your skin. From the gently finger-picked guitar through his more rollicking moments, to the poetic shivers of his beautiful voice, this is glorious modern folk music for the soul, with a distinctive Australian bent. Mick began his career with Melbourne indie folk/rock band The Restless in 2000 writing all the songs on their critically acclaimed 2004 self-titled album. The album received nationwide radio coverage on Triple J (Australia's national network) and 3 singles from the album were named “King Pick” by Australia's top radio DJ, Richard Kingsmill. After 3 EPs and one album, The Restless went their separate ways in 2006 and Mick became a solo artist under the name Young Werther. In 2008, he released the beautifully haunting, autumnal Treasure mini-album which was named in Beat Magazine's “Singles of the Year”. This success led to shows with some of Australia's biggest names including Paul Dempsey (Something for Kate), Kate Miller Heidke, Clare Bowditch, Katie Noonan and James Reyne. After extensive touring Young released Knights of the Department Store (Popboomerang Records) in 2010 and was named Triple J “Feature Artist”. Mick has recently moved to Europe and now England to grow his fan base there and is working on a new album. Listening to these two is like chatting to your best friend. Their story of friendship was love at first cyber-stalk (or close to that); and how they have taken their individual skills and leaped into a new career together is a unique story. During this episode Lise Carlaw and Sarah Wills, better known as Those Two Girls, give us a glimpse into the uniqueness behind their drive and success (Sarah's regular 'welling-up' in our chat gives you an idea of how cool it is...or how much she doesn't mind a little cry). They’ve become popular for their distinctive style and walk the line between smart and irreverent, with warm communication styles and disarming onstage banter. Lise and Sarah's natural female friendship chemistry is engaging and, with a #1 national morning radio segment on Hit FM, clearly audiences want to hear more from them. Outside of radio, Those Two Girls are official ambassadors for Suncorp's national #TeamGirls initiative, which aims to build a national of confident girls in partnership with Netball Australia and Reach Out. They are also creative ambassadors for Brisbane City Council, joining the likes of Keith Urban and Katie Noonan. Lise and Sarah are known for producing sell-out events (which have been attended by thousands in their hometown), and regularly front crowds as MCs and guest speakers thanks to their broad appeal in Brisbane and regional areas. In recent months, they have worked for clients ranging from retail centres to rugby league (State of Origin), child safety organisations (Queensland Government) to charities; car dealerships to chemists; fashion to finance and more. We talked a lot in this episode about finding 'that' friend in adulthood, dealing with imposter syndrome, the business of monetising a friendship, and why at the end of the day you've just gotta back yourself. Katie Noonan - Singer Songwriter Katie Noonan’s technical mastery and pure voice makes her one of Australia’s most versatile and beloved vocalists. A mother, singer, producer, songwriter, pianist and business woman, this 4 x ARIA Award winning and 7 x platinum selling songstress first received widespread praise as the angel-voiced songstress of indie-pop band George and has since taken audiences on sublime excursions through Jazz, Pop and Classical music. Katie is currently the Artist Director of Qld Music Festival which is the largest music festival in the world. When I decided to launch this podcast I wrote out a wish list of all the people I’d love to interview and Katie’s name was at the top of this list. Our chat was connected, personal and pure delight. In this interview we unpack the importance of giving ourselves permission to unplug and connect with nature, the magical connection of the power of music, and the glorious freedom of bordem.
