He was also an All-American in XC placing 11th on the grass.  In high school, Ron won state titles and did some crazy things, like running 9:05 in the 3200m as a sophomore (unheard of for the 80s).  After his successful years in the sport, he transitioned into corporate life where he was unbelievably successful, becomingan executive at Microsoft. He is currently the CEO of Lighthouse. He has four kids: Jordan, Cambria, Olivia, and Andrea. Three of them went onto run in the NCAA and Olivia is currently a professional runner for On and won an NCAA title in the Steeplchase last June. In today's conversation, Ron takes me through his years of running growing up, what training was like back in the day, his legendary recruiting visit to Notre Dame, his years at Notre Dame, transitioning out of the sport, lessons from his successful years at Microsoft, parenting, and much more! This was genuinely one of my favorite conversations I've had this year. It is thoroughly entertaining, while also beingjam-packed with wisdom. The perfect podcast for your next run. Las Catalinas might be the most beautiful town built in the 21st century.  And my guest today, Sara Bega, has stewarded its evolution as Town Architect for a decade.  Las Catalinas is a car-free, kid-friendly, multi-generational community in Costa Rica. Their goal is to create a pedestrian-first environment that maximizes kid freedom and allows for independent exploration and discovery. The town is built on 20% of the 1200-acre site, with a mix of houses, flats, hotels, and shops.  We discuss Sara's professional journey, and the principles and practices behind developing such a stunningly beautiful and human neighborhood that serves as an inspiration and example for what is possible today.   If you do anything today, just click on this link so you can see the town.  It stands as a testament to the beauty humans can cultivate when they set their mind to it: Beach Town in Guanacaste, Costa Rica | Las Catalinas (lascatalinascr.com) TAKEAWAYS Creating a car-free, kid-friendly community allows for independent exploration and fosters curiosity and connection with nature. A pedestrian-first environment benefits not only children but also adults and families, creating a sense of community and connection. Las Catalinas is a successful example of a car-free community, with a mix of houses, flats, hotels, and shops built on a 1200-acre site. The community achieves car-free living through walkability, valet services, and emergency vehicle access. The town architect's role is to oversee the design and planning of the community, ensuring a balance between privacy, walkability, and optimized views. Creating a sustainable and adaptable community requires prioritizing human experience and connection. Designing a walkable town with a mix of residential and commercial spaces fosters a sense of community. The legal structure of a town should allow for flexibility and adaptability over time. Trust in human intelligence and the ability to solve problems is crucial for the success of a community. Creating a sense of place involves considering the local climate, using natural materials, and designing for the long term. Whether you're considering architecture as your field of study, want to hear what the day to day of working for a Design & Build small business is like, or are just curious to hear more on what makes beautiful places, this one is for you. Prior to joining Building Culture in 2022, Matt graduated from the Notre Dame School of Architecture and worked in Manhattan at G.P. Schafer Architect on custom residences in areas including Arkansas, Virginia, Florida, and New York City. Following several serendipitous interactions with Austin, the opportunity to confront the problems of disposable building and car-centric urbanism was too exciting for Matt to pass up and he uprooted to Oklahoma to join the Building Culture Team as Architect and Program Manager. Matt and Austin discuss an array of topics, like what factors are important when considering architect school for yourself, the benefits of travel and its influence on their building and design methods, the uniqueness of working for a start up Design & Build firm, and considering what makes a beautiful place and have the priority on humans and not cars. DescriptionThe majority of modern music we hear today would not have been possible without the development of Polyphony in the 12th and 13th centuries. Much of this was accomplished through the innovation of The Notre Dame School in Paris. Take a minute to get the scoop! Listen to a great example of Pérotin's organum quadruplum—four-voice polyphony ℅ YouTubeFun FactThe earliest motets are the Notre-Dame motets, written by composers such as Leonin and Perotin during the 13th century. These motets were polyphonic, with a different text in each voice, and employed the rhythmic modes. An example of a Notre-Dame motet is Salve, salus hominum/O radians stella/nostrum by Perotin, composed between 1180 and 1238.About Steven, HostSteven is a Canadian composer living in Toronto. On the show today, we have Chad Turner. Chad is President of the Charlotte LGBT Chamber and high level HR executive and consultant. His leadership is extraordinary and you are going to love this interview. In the interview we discuss: The history of the Charlotte LGBT chamber starting in such a conservative area. What can people do to enhance equality among the LGBT and POC communities and general population?  Challenges the LGBT community face that people would not really think about What it will take to break down the barriers of judging and excluding people based on their skin color or sexual orientation  What are the qualities of a great leader How we become better communicators And much more! What I found especially interesting about what Chad has created and is continuing to create in the community and as president of the LGBT chamber is that he is working to build up all small businesses and success for EVERYONE in the community and not just the LGBT community. He is an amazing human being with a heart of gold and a brilliant mind. Under his direction with Chamber, they have received national affiliation with the National LGBT Chamber of Commerce, established the Aspiring Professionals' Initiative for local colleges and also created a comprehensive training program for LGBT owned businesses.  The Chamber is now one of the largest LGBT chambers in the southeast.  In addition to his duties with the Chamber, Chad is a human resources consultant in the Charlotte region assisting businesses and professionals with their human resource needs. Chad has spent the past nine years training and advising small business owners, corporations and individuals in the areas of LGBT workplace issues, diversity, inclusion, equity and policy development. In his endeavor to create more equitable workplaces, he has opened dialogue with businesses by providing specialized training in benefit administration, policy creation and implementation and leadership development. He believes that companies and workplaces will create a new standard and develop best practices that will evolve from the changing perception of the LGBT community and those who support equality for all.   In 2008, Chad was designated a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) by the Human Resources Certification Institute.  In 2015, 2017 and 2019 he completed certificates with Notre Dame School of Business in the areas of human resources, small business supplier diversity, organizational development and chamber planning.  He is a frequent clinician in the Charlotte region on these topics.  Chad holds a BA in Music from Lee University and his BS in Human Resource Management from Villanova University.  His work has also provided the ability to work with various organizations such as Charlotte Pride, Charlotte Black Pride, Time Out Youth, RAIN and the Charlotte LGBTQ Elders to be a support and resource for development, philanthropy and marketing.  He serves on the Charlotte Regional Business Alliance (Charlotte Chamber) Business Leader's Roundtable, the Mecklenburg County Business Roundtable and the Charlotte Small Business Recovery Taskforce.  Most recently, as a founding member, Chad and the Charlotte LGBT Chamber formed the Charlotte Small Business Coalition, which he serves as chair.  Chad's efforts and strategic planning assisted with the passage of the $50 million dollars of grant funding for small businesses in Charlotte affected by COVID-19. Chad and his husband, Nate, are both small business owners and actively involved in both the business and LGBT community.  Chad has accomplished more in the last 10 years than most people do in 2 lifetimes. It was a privilege to sit down and have this amazing conversation.
