In this episode of the Especially for Athletes Podcast, Shad and Dustin dive into the powerful principle of consistency—a key factor that separates long-term champions from those who only experience short-term success. While motivation may spark action, it’s consistency that truly leads to growth and achievement. Drawing insights from Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps, Utah Valley wrestling coach Adam Hall, and legendary football coach Chris Petersen, the guys discuss how consistency plays a crucial role in achieving success, whether in sports, school, or life. They break down how to build consistent habits and offer practical advice for pushing through moments when motivation fades. Michael Phelps shares how consistent efforts—no matter how small—lead to extraordinary results. Coach Hall emphasizes being fully present and committed, and Chris Petersen’s advice rings true: “Don’t rely on motivation—rely on consistency.” Key Takeaways: Motivation gets you started, but consistency keeps you going. Develop clear goals, create a routine, and stick to it. Stay present in every moment, focusing on winning the hour—not the entire day or week. Join Shad as they explain why consistency is the secret weapon behind greatness and how developing this powerful habit leads to lasting success. Tune in now to learn how to build consistency into your daily life, and remember: Eyes up, do the work, and win the hour! Al Fontes is a National Wrestling Hall of Fame Writer, who has years and years of experience with the sport. And although writing wasn't his FIRST passion, he has now become one of the best to do it. His ability to break down the sport and cover the athletes involved, is incredible. Today we get to hear from him and learn of his background in the sport and where he came from. We'll chat about wrestling in California as compared to here in Idaho and what he's learned while he's been covering the sport here in Idaho (since he moved here just a few short years ago). We also break down the Girl's Wrestling too and discuss the immense growth that is happening on that side too! It's an incredible opportunity to become enlightened as Al shares some serious insight with the rest of us. What I would highly recommend is taking a look at TIER 1 Wrestling on Instagram to see the coverage he provides on social media. You can find his page here: https://www.instagram.com/tier_one_idaho/ I'd also highly encourage you all to take a look at his content on IdahoSports.com where he does the majority of his work these days. - https://www.idahosports.com/blogs/blogger.aspx?bloggerid=12029 Below I'd love to share with you all a list of the work he's done as a writer throughout the last 25+ years (you'll understand just how good this man's work truly is) ALFRED F. Send us a textGary Hall and Linda Adam-Hall first met in a commune in Lincoln, Nebraska, in 1975. Gary, visiting a friend, ended up eating and talking with Linda. Linda was instantly impressed by Gary's kindness, and they connected quickly. They built that connection over time, committing after a year. As Gary puts it, they've been together unofficially for 48 years and officially for 44, as they married in 1980. The two have played music together for most of their relationship.Linda has sung in various choral groups over her life, and she learned to play the guitar from a friend of hers in the '60s. This friend, who also happened to be a nun, introduced her to folk groups such as Peter, Paul, and Mary and The Chad Mitchell Trio. She has played guitar and sung on and off for most of her life, but Gary says she's been playing longer than him. Even though Gary has loved music all of his life, he says his primary “ignition point,” especially into the rock and roll world, was in February 1964, when his dad got him and his sister out of bed to watch The Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show. He has dabbled in many styles of music, growing up around his parent's eclectic collection, which ranged from bluegrass to Broadway show tunes. In junior high and high school, he started playing instruments more, and by the time he left home, he started playing gigs seriously and as frequently as he could.Gary and Linda's accomplishments throughout their lives, personally and together, are sprawling. Gary has released six CDs of original music, performed for and music-directed many theater orchestras (as well as acting in many productions), and held a long-standing career as an IT director for Experian before serving as the chief information officer of Estes Park Health for eighteen years. Linda is an artist in her own right, also acting in many theater productions over her lifetime and creating books of her photography. Welcome back to The Abundant Artist, the show that dispels the myth of “the starving artist” and shares how you can live an abundant life as an artist and make a living from your talent one interview at a time. Joining the podcast today is Adam Hall, who describes himself as “an artist who paints New Orleans''. Born in Raleigh, North Carolina, Adam's tryst with New Orleans started when he joined Tulane University there to obtain an undergraduate degree in studio art and history. Although later Adam studied in the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (BFA) and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (MFA), he eventually decided to move back to New Orleans and settle there. The impact of Hurricane Katrina is visible in Adam's art, especially in his black-and-white, burnt-paper three-dimensional collages that explored themes of loss and upheaval. A visit to Paris in 2009 and the study of impressionist painters convinced him to switch to impressionist oil paintings. In this episode, Adam explains why he calls New Orleans his home, his metamorphosis from a sculptor/installation artist to an impressionist painter, how Hurricane Katrina has inspired his artworks, and how he manages the business side of his art career. Key Takeaways: [:33] Cory reminisces how he has known Adam since 2013. [4:05] Why Adam has found his “artistic home” in New Orleans. [5:45] How Adam's website captures the fascinating evolution of his artworks. [7:15] Adam was more into sculptures and installations during grad school. Why has he taken up painting after moving to New Orleans? [10:05] How has Hurricane Katrina shaped Adam's artistic expressions? [12:38] Why it was important for Adam to create artworks that looked similar to oak trees. [20:12] How over time Adam coached himself to make impressionist paintings of New Orleans. [32:30] How Adam has designed his life for selling paintings. [33:40] Adam enjoys the business side of his art career. It's not “work” for him. [36:40] How Adam's New Orleans paintings changed over time and why. [38:14] How the pandemic impacted Adam's choice of subjects for paintings. [41:11] How did Adam figure out what works for him in the business side? How TAA class helped Adam with finding his “voice”. [46:14] What kind of write-ups Adam does regularly for his collectors. How does he decide on what to write? [49:07] Social media and his website helped Adam sell his paintings more than outdoor shows. [51:11] What's working for Adam on social media? [53:00] What's Adam excited about his art business at the moment? [55:03] Cory thanks Adam for joining the podcast!
