Ryan Day has made his second and third alterations to Ohio State's coaching staff in what could be a major makeout to the 10-man group. After choosing not to retain Perry Eliano as safeties coach, Day has brought Matt Guerrieri who originally followed Jim Knowles to Columbus as a graduate assistant in 2022 before leaving to help coordinate Indiana's defense in 2023. Now he returns as a full-time assistant coach. Plus Parker Fleming has officially been fired after another lackluster year from the special teams. After that, Stephen Means, Nathan Baird and Andrew Gillis look at an offensive coaching staff that might be on the verge of its first major overhaul of the Day era. A pivotal change may be brewing and it says something about Day's growth as a head coach. Thanks for listening to Buckeye Talk. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The latest episode of Land-Grant Holy Land's flagship podcast is here! Join LGHL's Josh Dooley and Chuck Holmes as they discuss Ohio State football, recruiting, and much, much more! Come for the hot takes, stay for the warm ones. On this episode of ‘Hangout in the Holy Land,' Josh and Chuck give props to not only OSU defensive coordinator Jim Knowles, but also Larry Johnson, Tim Walton, Perry Eliano and the players, as Ohio State rode their stingy defense to a second victory (this season) over a top-10 team — stifling a normally productive Penn State offense in the process. But first, the hosts discuss other goings-on around the CFB landscape, as several ranked teams played close games. Closer than they ever should have been. Both Washington and Oklahoma struggled coming off of big, emotional victories, while Iowa... Iowa'ed? As a result of the latter, the Big Ten West is unfortunately and comically wide open, and the Hangout boys are both disgusted and amused. The title race is heating up, and so is the Heisman race. The guys give their current favorites before transitioning to a total Knowles lovefest. And why not? The Buckeyes' DC and his group of coaches have their ‘Silver Bullets' playing at a championship level. While Ryan Day and the OSU offense continue to tinker and tweak - and hope to improve - Knowles' group is making an argument for the best unit in the country. The Buckeyes smothered the Nittany Lions and came away with an impressive victory, despite missing a number of key players. Here's hoping Ohio State can get healthy and continue getting better as they work toward a regular season finale in Ann Arbor. Please make sure to like, rate, review, and subscribe to the podcast! Ohio State spent last weekend retooling its secondary for the future, but it also brings up a question of what that future will look like. On this Tuesday episode of Buckeye Talk, Stephen Means and Andrew Gillis take a look at the commitments of 2024 safety Leroy Roker and 2025 cornerback Blake Woodby. The two additions may paint a of picture of how different the two parts of OSU's secondary recruiting have gone. Tim Walton has gotten off to a hot start on the recruiting trail, fueled mostly by an uptick in in-state talent. But landing Woodby proved his ability to go national with his efforts as the fifth top-100 recruit he's landed despite this being only his second year on the staff. Perry Eliano was brought in as a young coach with a potentially high upside both as a developer and a recruiter. The development has been there as his starting trio of Josh Proctor, Lathan Ransom and Sonny Styles have played at a high level this year. He even has freshman Malik Hartford ahead of schedule as a guy on pace to win a starting spot in 2024. But the recruiting trail hasn't been as kind to him as he's struck out on his top options in back-to-back classes The future for the cornerback room is high. But should OSU be worried about its safety room? Thanks for listening to Buckeye Talk. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The Ohio State football team is back on the practice field, the NFL Scouting Combine is complete and the postseason is about to begin for Ohio State men's basketball.Tuesday was the first day of spring football at Ohio State, and that's where we begin on this week's episode of Real Pod Wednesdays, on which we share our takeaways from watching the first 30 minutes of the Buckeyes' opening practice and from talking to Ryan Day, Jim Knowles and Kevin Wilson after practice. We explain why there's already a clear group of frontrunners to start on the offensive line, discuss how Kourt Williams and Ronnie Hickman could coexist within Jim Knowles' defense and talk about some of the players who are clearly already making an impression on Ohio State's coaches this offseason, including second-year wide receiver Jayden Ballard and second-year cornerbacks Jordan Hancock and Jakailin Johnson.Dan also learned more about which Ohio State football players could have breakout years and about some of Ohio State's new coaches by talking to players at last week's NFL Scouting Combine, where he also watched former Buckeye wide receivers Garrett Wilson and Chris Olave solidify themselves as first-round draft picks. We talk about what he learned in Indianapolis, including what three former Cincinnati defensive backs had to say about new Ohio State safeties coach Perry Eliano and what former UCLA offensive lineman Sean Rhyan said about new Ohio State offensive line coach Justin Frye, beginning around the 25:20 mark. While Dan just got back from Indianapolis, Griffin will be going to Indianapolis this week for the Big Ten men's basketball tournament, so we also talk about what we expect to see from the basketball Buckeyes as they begin postseason play. Can they bounce back from losing three of their final four regular-season games to make a deep run in the conference tournament, or will they have a short stay in Indianapolis? Beginning at the 38-minute mark, we talk about why they could make a run and why they might not, why there's an argument that they'd actually be better off not making a deep run and what NCAA Tournament seed we ultimately expect them to receive on Selection Sunday. In the final 11 minutes of the show, we talk about how Ohio State women's hockey has emerged as the best team on campus, how NIL is being used in recruiting and how Chris Holtmann can most effectively replace Ryan Pedon on his coaching staff.
On this Saturday Buckeye Talk from cleveland.com, Doug Lesmerises and Nathan Baird give their final thoughts on Ohio State at the NFL Combine before heading home. How did Nicholas Petit-Frere and Thayer Munford do in testing for offensive linemen? What did defensive linemen Haskell Garrett and Tyreke Smith say during their interviews? What did Cincinnati cornerbacks Sauce Gardner and Coby Bryant say about Perry Eliano, their former coach who has been hired at Ohio State?Does the combine function like it's supposed to anymore? And ... a question about Tate Martell? Thanks for listening to Buckeye Talk from cleveland.com. On today's episode of “Buck Off with Christopher Renne,” I am joined, as always, by Jordan Williams for the fourth episode of Ohio State's offseason and we discuss the return of JIm Harbaugh to Michigan who never left, but sure acted like he did. We begin the show by talking about the impact of Jim Harbaugh leaving Michigan for the NFL, and the fall out of him having to return after not receiving an offer. The discussion heads into how a staff recovers from the instability and if Harbaugh is serious about his words that every offseason won't be this way. After that conversation we discuss the introductory press conferences and we get into our favorite moments. We talk Justin Frye's approach, Perry Eliano's confidence, and why we think Tim Walton will be a star for the Buckeyes. We close out with Jim Knowles and how he is an architect in football coaches clothing. After the break, we get into the player introductions and our infatuation with Devin Brown. We also discuss Tanner McAlister and how the young guys seemed extremely prepared. Then we get into some of the quick news notes surrounding the Buckeyes. Our final discussion is about the new group licensing deal Fanatics unveiled and why we're extremely excited for it. Head Coach Ryan Day, assistants Tim Walton, Justin Frye, Perry Eliano, and Jim Knowles join Paul Keels & Jim Lachey to discuss National Signing Day and all the new changes within the program.
Ohio State is wrapping up its recruiting class of 2022 today, and we finally got to meet the Buckeyes' new assistant coaches this week.We start this week's episode of Real Pod Wednesdays by sharing our overall thoughts on the Buckeyes' recruiting class of 2022 and making our picks for which players we expect to make the biggest immediate impact from the class, who we expect to be the biggest stars long-term and who could be the class' hidden gems.At the 23:24 mark of the show, we shift the conversations to Ohio State's new assistant coaches – Jim Knowles, Justin Frye, Tim Walton and Perry Eliano – who we got to meet for the first time on Monday. We share our first impressions of the four new assistants as well as our takeaways from Ryan Day's first press conference of the offseason, in which we learned that several “super seniors” would be back with the Buckeyes, though cornerback Sevyn Banks will not.Later in the show, we also answer some listener questions, including the outlook for Knowles and Frye as recruiters, players who need to take a leap for the Buckeyes to be a College Football Playoff team next year and a potential date for the Ohio State spring game. Finally, we discuss the positives of negatives of the Ohio State men's basketball team's 5-3 month of January and what we need to see from those Buckeyes in February.
On Monday, Ohio State's four new assistant coaches met with reporters for the first time. Defensive coordinator Jim Knowles, cornerbacks coach Tim Walton, safeties coach Perry Eliano and offensive line coach Justin Frye spoke for about 30 minutes each, and Doug Lesmerises, Nathan Baird and Stephen Means were there to ask questions and get first impressions. Ryan Day also spoke to reporters about the new hires, and about other things happening with the roster. All that means this Tuesday Buckeye Talk is chock full of info. Thanks for listening. Ohio State will have football media availability for the first time since the Rose Bowl late this afternoon and we are quite excited about it. We are expected to interview head coach Ryan Day, new defensive coordinator Jim Knowles, new offensive line coach Justin Frye, new cornerbacks coach Tim Walton and new safeties coach Perry Eliano. What are we most curious to hear about from the coaches? Steve Helwagen joins Dave Biddle to discuss that, plus: * The Cincinnati Bengals are going to the Super Bowl and they have four starters who are former Buckeyes. Well, five including Joe Burrow. (Hey, Burrow has a degree from OSU and was on the team for three seasons. He counts. Wait, does he count?) * Resuming a topic from Friday's show, what would Steve think about the Big Ten eliminating divisions? Or would he prefer to keep the East and West? * Steve was in West Lafayette for Ohio State's near-incredible comeback at Purdue in basketball yesterday. The Buckeyes fell short, but are we encouraged by this team overall? All of that and more is coming your way on the Monday 5ish. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Ohio State continued to overhaul its defensive coaching staff, the Buckeyes got good news at the NFL draft entry deadline and Ohio State has a new schedule for the 2022 season. All of that made for a newsy week since our last episode of Real Pod Wednesdays, and we dive into all three of those topics as Griffin returns to the show this week.First up, we take a closer look at Ohio State's new hires on the defensive coaching staff – secondary coaches Tim Walton and Perry Eliano, as well as multiple additional support staff hires – and what we expect them to bring to the Buckeyes. We also reflect back on the tenures of Kerry Coombs and Al Washington and discuss how they should be remembered at Ohio State and why they are now headed elsewhere. In a little over 26 minutes of talk about the coaching staff, we also share our thoughts on yet another offensive coach getting a coordinator title and why we don't believe there will be any further changes to the full-time coaching staff before the 2022 season. At the 26:20 mark, we shift the conversation to a discussion about who will and won't be leaving Ohio State to enter the 2022 NFL draft. Dan explains why the return of Zach Harrison shouldn't be viewed as anything but a great thing and why Dawand Jones' return may be the Buckeyes' most important win among this year's NFL draft decisions. We also discuss why this year's NFL draft decisions went as well as Ohio State could have hoped, how many Buckeyes we think we will be drafted this year (36:26), who we think Ohio State will miss most next season (38:26) from the 2022 draft class and why the Buckeyes could have some work to do to get down to the 85-man scholarship limit (43:10).Finally, we take a look at Ohio State's newly revised 2022 schedule and share our early thoughts on what bodes well for the Buckeyes and where they could run into the biggest challenges before making our initial predictions (54:20) for Ohio State's 2022 regular-season record.
Just a couple weeks removed from the Ohio State win over Utah, Ballard has been called on by Lettermen Row's Tim May as a special guest for this week's episode of the Tim May Podcast. Ballard was not just a pivotal force for the Buckeyes first Rose Bowl win since 1997 during that 2010 victory. He eventually would go on to have a four-year career in the NFL, highlighted by winning a Super Bowl with the New York Giants in 2011. Ballard is an expert voice and analyst who knows the ins and outs of the game in addition to background in the infrastructure of a college football program. So he gives some valuable insight in this week's podcast episode as Ohio State is now in the midst of a crucial offseason for Buckeyes coach Ryan Day and his program. That offseason has already been a busy one with several new defensive coaching hires, including the hiring of Tim Walton as cornerbacks coach and Perry Eliano as safeties coach for Ohio State. Those two will play a big role in the attempt to turn around the Buckeyes defense following poor season-long performances in both 2020 and 2021. Tim is also joined on the show by Lettermen Row's Austin Ward to discuss those new hires and to break down more Buckeyes news, analysis and offseason discussions in another jam-packed edition of the Tim May Podcast. #OhioStateFootball #OhioState #CFBNews Subscribe for more Ohio State Football coverage: https://www.youtube.com/c/Lettermenrow?sub_confirmation=1 Ohio State Buckeyes videos from Columbus, Ohio from the staff of Lettermen Row. Perry Eliano was hired this week to be Ohio State's new safeties coach as the Buckeyes completely overhaul their defensive coaching staff following a shaky 2021 season. He helped coach Cincinnati defensive backs Sauce Gardner and Coby Bryant from unheralded recruits to a Thorpe Award winner and possible NFL first-round draft pick, and now he's headed to Columbus.Mick Walker of Bearcat Journal (and a former Buckeye Scoop recruiting analyst) joins host Tom Orr to discuss what Eliano meant to the Cincinnati program, and what he brings with him to Columbus.- What kind of eye for talent evaluation does he have, and what kind of recruiter is he?- How is he as a technician on the practice field?- Will it be an issue that he has coached corners at UC and is moving over to safeties at OSU?- Are there any current UC recruiting targets who he might try to bring to Ohio State?- And with a defensive backs coaching spot open, could Kerry Coombs be headed to Cincinnati?

Ohio State head coach Ryan Day is not messing around this offseason. The Buckeyes had the No. 52 total defense in the country in 2021, and Day has overhauled his coaching staff on that side of the ball. In fact, only defensive line coach Larry Johnson remains as a holdover on the defensive staff. Everyone else is out, including linebackers coach Al Washington and Kerry Coombs. Coming to Columbus are safeties coach Perry Eliano from Cincinnati and cornerbacks coach Tim Walton -- a former OSU corner -- from the Jacksonville Jaguars.
