From Conflict to Convergence - a Book DiscussionFriends, one of the greatest lessons I've learned in my journey is that when we come together with honesty, integrity and good will, we can find solutions that are better than what any one person could have come up with on their own. And if there's anyone who embodies that belief, it's today's guests, Rob Fersh and Mariah Levison of Convergence! Now, let me tell you, these two are champions of bridging divides and resolving conflicts in ways that don't just settle for middle ground, but actually aim for higher ground—solutions that honor everyone's needs and values. Rob Fersh, the founder and senior advisor of Convergence, has been in the trenches of policy resolution for decades, working on everything from hunger in America to U.S.-Muslim relations. His leadership in organizations like the Food Research and Action Center and Search for Common Ground has literally shaped the way we tackle big issues in this country. And then we've got Mariah Levison, the current CEO and President of Convergence. Mariah's got this incredible knack for building trust and relationships across the most contentious divides. From running the Minnesota State Office of Collaboration and Dispute Resolution to teaching the next generation of mediators, she's all about conflict resolution and creating solutions that really stick.Together, Rob and Mariah co-authored a must-read book, *From Conflict to Convergence: Coming Together to Solve Tough Problems*. And today, they're here to talk about how we can all get better at listening, understanding each other's values, and finding those higher ground solutions—especially in a time when our society seems more divided than ever. But here's the kicker—they're not just talking to the leaders or the policymakers; they're even emphasizing the importance of engaging young people in this process. Because, let's face it, the future belongs to them, and it's crucial that they learn how to navigate these differences to build a more functional and civil society.Learn more about and connect with Rob Fersh, Mariah Levison and Convergence by checking out the full show notes for this episode at www.DerateTheHate.com.What have you done today to make your life a better life? Ep 125: In this episode Stationhead co-founders, Murray Levison and Ryan Star speak to Editor Joe Sparrow about the platform's role as a gathering place for superfans, and what fans are seeking in a platform that mixes music, community and commerce. Superfans are well know for their all-encompassing support of an artist, and their desire to form a community to celebrate them. Stationhead started out as a kind of live radio platform that would allow users to play music and talk around the songs, and has changed its path a little to become even more oriented around fandoms. Now, fans gather around stations to geek out about an artist's music and chat about. them – with some artists joining in on the broadcasts for things like release parties. Joe talked to Murray and Ryan – who is also a successful artist in his own right – about what fans want and what Stationhead is doing to give it to them. Jack Levison holds the WJA Power Chair of Old Testament Interpretation and Biblical Hebrew at Southern Methodist University. He previously taught at Duke Divinity School and Seattle Pacific University. Jack has the gift of connecting with popular audiences with essays featured in The Huffington Post, parade.com, relevant.com, and beliefnet.com. He is the author and editor of many books, including A Boundless God. Which was Christianity Today's 2021 Book Award winner and his newest release, Seven Secrets of the Spirit-Filled Life. Here are a few highlights from our conversation: We start with a few questions I have about the Holy Spirit. First, the church feels all over the map on how we handle the Holy Spirit. Jack helps us understand a better way. Second, I ask Jack to explain why Scripture says we are both filled with the Spirit and indwelt by the Spirit. Jack explains this and shares that he believes the filling of the Spirit is to propel us toward mission. This was super interesting to me. An interesting thing about Jack and his wife is that they live in a dorm at SMU with 185 undergraduate students. He tells us about some of the challenges and blessings of this. Jack shares where the Lord led him as he meditated on John 14. So amazing to see the living and active Word at work! I love how God showed him something new in the passage. This leads us to talk about one of the secrets he discovered about life with the Spirit – we need to saturate ourselves in Scripture. The Spirit will help us recall – but we need something to recall first. This is why we need to be filling ourselves with God's word. Jack tells us why failed Bible study can be some of the best Bible study. This is interesting! We then talk about how God has upended some things in Jack's life as he's studied God's word. He tells us how his views have changed on some critical issues. Finally, Jack ends with some encouragement for us found in Acts 8 and the life of Philip. Super encouraging – and maybe a bit convicting. When you create something new like 29029 you never know what will happen. It's hard to tell if people are going to buy into the idea that climbing up a mountain for 36 hours over a weekend to try to reach the vertical gain of Mt. Everest is a good idea or not. In 2017 when 29029 was launched, it was a small group of people who were known for enjoying crazy experiences. They loved it! Of course they did. In 2018 as the brand expanded to include an additional location in Snowbasin Utah a larger community had the opportunity to experience this new everesting concept. By 2019 and the pandemic year of 2020, 29029 Everesting had a full-blown community. There were alumni returning to the mountain each season. Those alumni were wearing their red hats and 7 summit triangle shirts. 29029 was growing. Sitting here years later, it's impossible to imagine our summers without the mountain. What started as a crazy idea that may or may not have work has become our passion. Jenny Levison (or Souper Jenny as many of her Restaurant customers in Atlanta know) is one of those individuals who has been there since almost the very beginning. She too didn't know quite what this 29029 experiment was…… But in the years between Jenny's first climb in 2018 to today, as she is preparing to take on the mountain for her 4th time, she's found something she can't quite let go of….. Jenny is going to take us back to the early days of 29029 and recount the moments and lessons the mountain has provided in her life. Though Jenny has never had the opportunity to place a red hat on her head……yet……..she comes back for more than that token of completion. She climbs for herself and for the people who tirelessly show up ascent after ascent and year after year as she's chosen to just keep climbing. They also discuss The Crate, her award-winning non-fiction account of Holocaust survival and present-day murder. Deborah is an author and publicist. Her life has two parts: the first in Canada, where she attended University of Toronto and the Royal Conservatory of Music, and the second in Connecticut, where she lives with three children, two doodles, and one husband. Her first book, an acclaimed nonfiction called THE CRATE, is a true crime story with echoes of the Holocaust. Reviewers called it “gorgeous and poetic,” “heart-wrenching,” and “a brilliant story.” The Jerusalem Post wrote: “exquisite.” The book won seven literary awards. Levison's debut novel, A NEST OF SNAKES, is part thriller, part courtroom drama based on real-life abuse at elite New England private schools. Reviewers call it “a roller-coaster ride of surprising twists” leading to a “staggering climax and an absolutely perfect ending.” Monster Librarian hails A NEST OF SNAKES as one of the fall's most talked-about novels. #MLK #StanleyLevison #martinlutherkingday Email the podcast: rbcforum313@yahoo.com https://cash.app/$BlackConsciousnes Join us as we have a conversation about Dr. Martin Luther King's Smallhat Adviser Stanley Levison. According to Stanford Ed - Levison, Stanley David: In 1956 Stanley Levison, a Jewish attorney from New York, began raising funds to support the Montgomery bus boycott and became acquainted with Martin Luther King, Jr. The two men developed a close relationship in which Levison not only advised King, but also aided him with the day-to-day administrative demands of the movement. In 1963, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) used King's relationship with Levison, who they believed to be a Communist functionary, to justify surveillance of King. Born in New York City on 2 May 1912, Levison studied at the University of Michigan, Columbia University, and the New School for Social Research before earning two law degrees from St. John's University. As treasurer of the Manhattan branch of the American Jewish Congress, Levison became a champion of left-wing causes and supported the defense of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg and the campaign against the McCarran Internal Security Act. In the early 1950s the FBI considered Levison to be a major financial coordinator for the Communist Party in the United States and began to monitor his activities. In the mid-1950s Levison turned his attention to the civil rights struggle. In 1956 Levison, Bayard Rustin, and Ella Baker created In Friendship, an organization that raised money for southern civil rights activists and organizations, including the Montgomery Improvement Association (MIA). Together they formulated the concept of a regional “Congress of organizations” dedicated to mass action grounded in nonviolence, an idea that would later develop into the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) (Papers 3:491). So yeah, make sure you tap into this conversation. And make sure you like, share and comment! Thanks in advance! RBCF! True Crime Tuesday presents A Nest of Snakes with Author Deborah Levison! In her fiction debut, Deborah Levison, author of the acclaimed, multi award-winning true crime book, THE CRATE, weaves a tale snatched from the headlines. A NEST OF SNAKES is loosely based on a spate of lawsuits in which adult men accused their elite private schools of abuses that shocked the nation. In A NEST OF SNAKES, Brendan Cortland is a broken man. Middle-aged, pasty, pudgy, and fearful, he suffers from chronic depression, nightmares, and agoraphobia. His contact with the outside world is limited to trolling chatrooms, where he hunts pedophiles, and a weekly session with his psychiatrist, to whom he describes dreams of being devoured by predators. The doctor suspects catastrophic abuse, and maybe something more; but in all his years of therapy Brendan never divulged the deepest source of his trauma. Pushed to his breaking point, Brendan embarks on a quest for justice. It's the terrifying step he's avoided for decades: going public with his story. His lawyer warns him that testifying might mean dredging up painful memories, ones he'd rather keep buried. Still, no one is prepared for the horrible secrets and revelations that emerge during the trial … least of all Brendan himself. Debbie appears on today's True Crime Tuesday to talk about her new project, draw parallels between the 1980's (when the book is set) and now, and we talk about the inspirations for both her books!
