669: From Common Good to Culture War—Lessons from the Q Conference with Katelyn Beaty

The Holy Post

We have a pope and he's American! Cardinal Robert Prevost from Chicago is now Pope Leo XIV, and his connection to The Holy Post is closer than anyone imagined. Phil, Skye, and Kaitlyn discuss reactions to the new Pope and the significance of his name. Katelyn Beaty is back to discuss the evolution of the Q Conference, led by Gabe and Rebekah Lyons. Why has an event that started almost 20 years ago with a positive vision of Christian cultural engagement for the common good now shifted to embrace the culture war? And what does it reveal about larger changes within American evangelicalism? Also this week—The Trump administration is accepting refugees into the U.S. again (as long as they are white), the Quakers are on the move, caterpillar flair, and baby girl Bible names. As today's guest, Robert Reich, former US Secretary of Labor, wrote in his substack “Brace yourselves. The economy is heading into very bad weather.” That while prices and unemployment are going up. Everything else is going down. This is, of course, the polar opposite of what President Trump campaigned on, and exactly we, the president's opposition said he would do. If anything good is going to emerge from this nightmare, it's going to take the majority of us uniting to collectively demand it. That we can't just be AGAINST this hideous, lawless, authoritarian version of America, where our President is a corrupt grifter surrounded by other grifters, we have to be FOR something better. That perhaps the silver lining of this horror will be the coalitions being built to fight the regime finding common ground on which to build something that finally works for all of us.  As always, if you find worth in what we do, please consider SUBSCRIBING to PoliticsGirl Premium. A slate of new articles analyzes Pope Francis through America's progressive-conservative polarization, but are they confusing political categories with theological ones? Surprising data show that Gen Z is returning to religion, and belief in an afterlife is on the rise, but what's the explanation? Are young people returning to the church to rebel against their secular parents? Former Ohio Governor John Kasich believes America is on the cusp of a spiritual revival, and his new book, “Heaven Help Us,” explores how religious institutions are leading the way. It's Holy Week, and an article in the New York Times argues that Palm Sunday wasn't a worship procession; it was a protest march. With that theme in mind, Christians held peaceful rallies over the weekend in Philadelphia and San Diego to protest inhumane immigration enforcement policies, including the order allowing government agents into churches during worship gatherings to arrest people. Skye talks to Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) about how her faith informs her politics, what lessons the Democrats have learned from their losses in 2024, and why more religious Americans view her party's brand as “toxic.” Phil, Skye, and Kaitlyn then debrief the interview and discuss whether the Democrats' struggle is just messaging or something deeper. A new slate of Christian movies and television shows is managing to draw both acclaim from critics and the attention of non-believers. Are the days of cringy Christian media finally behind us? Phil, Skye, and Kaitlyn discuss the impact of “The Chosen” and the new Amazon series, “House of David.” What do these shows get right that so many past faith-based projects got wrong? The Oscar-winning documentary, “No Other Land,” cannot find a distributor in the U.S. because critics say it's antisemitic, but Phil managed to watch it anyway. He offers his take on the movie, why it's controversial, and how we can distinguish between sinful antisemitism and legitimate criticism of the Israeli government. Then, Kaitlyn interviews Glenn Packiam about his new book about the Nicene Creed, “What's a Christian Anyway?” Packiam says the creed can be a beautiful lifeline to people caught in the crosswinds of church corruption and cultural confusion. After a made-for-T.V. meltdown in the Oval Office between President Trump and President Zelensky of Ukraine, the administration cut all military aid to Ukraine and sided with Russia instead. Will this cause some evangelicals to rethink their support for Trump, and if so where will they go? Two popular Christian books are saying that empathy is manipulative at best, or downright sinful at worst. Phil, Skye, and Kaitlyn examine their arguments. Most Christians  probably believe that racism is rooted in hate or ignorance, but historian Malcolm Foley says it's really all about greed. The first week of the second Trump administration has seen refugees cut off and January 6th criminals cut loose. Franklin Graham declared in his inauguration prayer that God himself had chosen the President. The MAGA faithful applauded this mix of Christian faith and politics, but when Bishop Budde asked the President to “show mercy” to frightened people during her homily at the National Cathedral, she was accused of everything from political activism to witchcraft. Phil has a theory about what these two religious leaders at the inauguration reveal about the state of American Christianity. Then Matthew Soerens from World Relief is back to discuss Trump's immediate shut down of all refugee resettlement, including cutting all financial aid previously promised to refugees already in the U.S. What's behind the President's aggressive policy, and how can we practically help our neighbors abandoned by the government that brought them here? Former president and born again Christian, Jimmy Carter, died at the age of 100. As the media reflects on his legacy of public service and humanitarianism, some are contrasting Carter's faith with that of conservative white evangelicals. Esau McCaulley says Carter is being used as a cudgel by progressives to shame their political opponents. Is he right? Skye and Phil unpack two explanations for the country's rejection of President Carter for Ronald Reagan in 1980. Was Carter too liberal or too humble? Then, pastor and Holy Post Pundit, Gabriel Salguero, is back to talk about a second Trump administration's plan to deport millions of undocumented immigrants, and how Christians and church leaders should hope for the best but prepare for the worst. Also this week—Phil wants to do a telethon for turtles.    Holy Post Plus Getting Schooled - Heresy 101: https://www.patreon.com/posts/119252265/   0:00 - Show Starts 3:51 - Theme Song 4:12  - Sponsor - Sundays Dog Food - Get 40% off your first order of Sundays. In the early morning hours of Saturday, January 29th, 2022, Boston Police officer John O'Keefe was found dead in a snowbank outside a home in Canton, Massachusetts. According to the medical examiner, O'Keefe had died from blunt force trauma and hypothermia. At first it seemed like a tragic accident, maybe a slip on the ice, a fall that ended in death. But as investigators dug deeper, things became far more complicated and Karen Read, O'Keefe's girlfriend, became the center of the investigation. Evidence that there had been trouble in paradise in the romantic relationship began to surface, but so did other disturbing possibilities. What seemed like a domestic tragedy was quickly clouded by allegations of police corruption and cover-up, and an investigation that many believe was compromised from the start. What if the very people tasked with upholding the law were covering up the truth? Was John O'Keefe's death a result of an angry lovers rage- or the collateral damage of a police force protecting its own? In this case, the line between justice and corruption becomes confusingly blurred. Evidence disappears, witnesses are silenced, and as the truth slowly rises to the surface, it may reveal a web of lies that's more dangerous than anyone could have predicted. Was Karen Read the scapegoat in a larger cover-up? And what role did corruption within the police department play in distorting facts. This may not be just a story of love gone wrong, it may in fact turn out to be a story of power, deceit, and the price people will pay to keep the darkest of dark secrets buried. But behind closed doors, beneath the layers of sympathy and kindness, there was a dark secret waiting to be uncovered. For nearly two decades Dee Dee Blanchard told the world that her daughter, Gypsy Rose, was dying. Leukemia, muscular dystrophy, seizures, vision and hearing issues, the list of illnesses and medical concerns was endless. Gypsy, a seemingly happy little girl with a huge smile, was bound to a wheelchair, fed through a tube, and showered with the attention and support of everyone around her, but no one really knew the horrifying truth. It seemed that Gypsy was perfectly healthy. She could walk. She didn't need a wheelchair to get around, and it appeared that she was being kept a prisoner in her own body, in her own home, by her own mother. The story goes that years of abuse, manipulation, and lies built up until they all came crashing down in the most unthinkable way: Murder. On the night of June 14, 2015, Dee Dee Blanchard was found stabbed to death in her home, and the prime suspect? Dee-Dee's innocent, smiling, happy, and allegedly disabled daughter, along with the man that Gypsy had been having a very adult relationship with. But nothing about this case is as it appears to be. The 2024 election is finally here. Who won? We don't know because we recorded this episode on Monday. But we do know that MAGA men are not happy about their wives secretly voting for Kamala Harris. And a new study finds trust in American institutions—especially the media—continues to decline. Is there a way to reverse the trend? Then, to take an overdue break from politics, Skye talks to author and illustrator, John Hendrix, about his new graphic non-fiction book “The Mythmakers” about the remarkable friendship between C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien. It's a fun conversation about faith, fantasy, and just a little bit of nerdiness. Did you know that by adulthood, most people have experienced some form of sexual wounding? Today's conversation with Sam Jolman, therapist and author of the new book, "The Sex Talk You Never Got," is one of my absolute all-time favorites. Why? It truly surprised me. It's so rare to find a nuanced conversation about sex—especially in a world where we're constantly tugged between a reductive view of “purity” and an equally reductive sense of “permissiveness.” This conversation is packed with absolute gems—there's depth, wisdom, and healing in every moment that's relevant to all of us, no matter our stories. Here's what we dive into: - How to establish safety, consent, and trust in intimate relationships - An eye-opening statistic from Harvard about what kids long for from their parents on the topic of sex - How to have a truly meaningful “sex talk” with your kids - What God actually desires from us when it comes to sex - Sam's advice for those who've experienced sexual wounding or brokenness and want to begin the healing process Find a full transcript and list of resources from this episode here. If you've ever struggled to set boundaries or wondered why it's so hard to respect them in others, this episode is for you. We dive deep into how to set and receive healthy boundaries, and why so many of us confuse healthy limits with toxic behaviors. Spoiler: setting boundaries isn't selfish—it's necessary for healthy, thriving relationships. But that's not all. When our boundaries are shaky, complicated emotions—like guilt, resentment, or anxiety—often arise. And instead of dealing with them, many of us reach for quick fixes: we numb. We avoid confronting those tough feelings that boundaries bring to the surface. Today, I'll break down why we numb, how to recognize it, and the steps you can take to stop avoiding your emotions and start healing. This episode covers: * The difference between healthy boundaries and toxic behaviors * How to communicate boundaries without guilt or shame * Practical ways to receive boundaries from others gracefully * How to recognize when you're numbing emotions (and what to do about it) * Why boundaries and emotional numbing are deeply connected—and how to untangle them You deserve relationships that nourish you, not drain you. Historian Kristen Kobes Du Mez is back to discuss her new documentary, “For Our Daughters,” about the sexual abuse scandals that have shaken the faith of many in the church. A small, quiet town in Missouri. A devoted mother caring for her chronically ill daughter. A story of love, sacrifice, and survival. Or so it seemed. In the last two presidential elections about 8 in 10 evangelicals voted for Donald Trump, but can Kamala Harris steal some of those votes in 2024? We discuss the recent “Evangelicals for Harris” call and why it's so difficult to get Christians to think more theologically about politics. Ed Stetzer argues that abortion should still be a top priority when voting, and Tyler Huckabee says we should be uncomfortable endorsing any candidate. Then, Skye talks to New Testament professor, Dr. Gary Burge, about the ongoing Israeli/Palestinian conflict, and what the Bible really says about Israel's claim on the Holy Land.   0:00 - Intro   1:30 - Show Starts and Kaitlyn's Opinion on Vacations   4:53 - Theme Song   5:16 - Sponsor - Go to https://www.fromourplace.com and use code HOLYPOST to get 10% off site wide on beautiful cookware!    6:21 - Sponsor - Blueland - Get up to 15% off your first order by going to https://www.BlueBlueland.com/HOLYPOST   12:21 - Discussing the Evangelicals for Harris Call   21:08 - Jemar Tisby and Thick vs Thin Theology   29:03 - Ed Stetzer and the Umpire Analogy   33:30 - Which Party is Better for the Pro-Life Movement?   43:40 - Phil's TwiXter on Watching Political Conventions as a Nonpartisan   48:14 -  Sponsor - Faithful Counseling - This episode is sponsored by Faithful Counseling. Then, should Christians embrace the spiritual uses of psychedelic drugs? Megan Basham's new book claims progressive powerbrokers have corrupted evangelical leaders with money, praise, and prestige, but many of her citations are being called into question. Rich Villodas is back to talk about his new book on the Sermon on the Mount—“The Narrow Path.” He says obeying the sermon “is not how we achieve salvation; it's how we demonstrate it.” And the fact that so few Christians seem to take Jesus' commands seriously calls their salvation into question. Lord Acton famously said, “Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” Was he right? Mike Erre is back to discuss the way Christians think about power, and why he believes our pursuit of power over the world is not the way of Jesus. Then, author Elizabeth Oldfield talks with Kaitlyn about her new book, “Fully Alive,” which uses the Seven Deadly Sins as a bridge for introducing secular people to the wisdom of Christianity. Also this week—the verdict in the Trump trail, a very unique fossil museum opens in Arizona, and Phil creates a fun new game for Christians called “Is It Persecution?”   0:00 - Intro   2:09 - Show Starts   4:15 - Theme Song   4:37 - Sponsor -  AG1 - Heavily researched, thoroughly purity-tested, and filled with stuff you need. Kansas City Chiefs Kicker, Harrison Butker, recently gave a controversial commencement address at Benedictine College where he drew on some popular conservative talking points about Pride Month, Covid 19 policies, and the calling of women in the home. Phil, Skye, and Kaitlyn discuss the problems they had with the speech, as well as their frustrations with some of the criticism of the speech, and how Butker's views seem to have been influenced more by conservative politics than the historic Catholic position on these issues. Then, Kaitlyn sits down with Latasha Morrison to talk about her new book, "Brown Faces, White Spaces." They discuss the importance of understanding historical context to grasp the roots and impacts of systemic racism, and practical ways that churches and individuals can engage in the work of racial reconciliation. Plus, a megachurch in Texas tried to manipulate a traffic study for a stop light, and Phil thinks he has proof that News of the Butt is the best part of the podcast.   Holy Post Plus   0:00 - Intro   1:29 - Show Starts   2:26 - Theme Song   2:47 - Sponsor - Sundays Dog Food - Get 35% off your first order of Sundays. Atheist Richard Dawkins has said he doesn't believe one word of the Christian faith, but he now considers himself a “cultural Christian” and wants to defend the Christian values of his country against the influence of Islam and immigrants. Does this represent an alignment between the New Atheists and Christian Nationalists? Curtis Chang shares about “The After Party”—the new curriculum he's developed with David French and Russel Moore to help Christians focus on hope and humility rather than partisanship.
