Our first live-pod (in English!) We have had the great pleasure of talking with BDS co-founder Omar Barghouti. We spoke about the power BDS-campaigns, and why taking action in this way is an important and efficient way to resist the apartheid state of Israel. Alone, we fail. Together, we prevail. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . And why are European organisations defending its continued participation? In this episode: Andrew Feinstein, Writer and campaigner. Many of you feel you have watched the horror of Israel's onslaught against Palestinians in Gaza and felt fury and grief - but helplessness. You may have participated in large demos, tweeted about it, peacefully occupied a train station, yelled at your computer screens and TVs, or offloaded on to friends and family - but ultimately felt "there's nothing more to do to stop this genocidal war!"Well there is. I interviewed Omar Barghouti - he's a Palestinian human rights defender, winner of the 2017 Gandhi Peace Award, and co-founder of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement https://bdsmovement.net/. He explains how this peaceful, Palestinian-led mass global movement can help bring this horror to an end - and finally bring about freedom, justice, equality and dignity.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-owen-jones-podcast. Omar Barghouti, iconic leader of the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement for Palestinian rights, disccusses the aims of the BDS campaign against Israeli apartheid and how it differs from the indiscriminate sanctions the West is applying to Russia because of its invasion of Ukraine. Barghouti discusses the hypocrisy in the West's response to Russia and its response to Israel's decades-long occupation of Palestinian land and says the racism of the West is on full display. Russia should be sanctioned for its agression, but boycotting individuals for their identity or political beliefs is not something the BDS movement supports. Barghouti discusses U.S. support for Israeli apartheid and the constant threat from Israel to his activism and to his life.
The final episode of Season Two gets an up-close look at the roots of the increasingly prominent pro-Palestine solidarity campaign, BDS. Co-founder Omar Barghouti recalls the steps leading to the movement's formation by a large coalition of Palestinian civil society groups, explains it's architecture and describes some ofthe ways it has tried to have an impact. He rebuts accusations that BDS is anti-semitic and points to places, including Israel, where support is growing. A conversation about Palestine, socialism, and anti-imperialist solidarity across borders. Palestine holds a central place in socialist organizing, and the role of socialism is crucial to the struggle to free Palestine. To mark the recent publication of Palestine: A Socialist Introduction, our speakers will discuss possibilities for connecting the struggle against occupation and apartheid in Palestine, to the international solidarity movement and growing support for socialism across the globe. We will analyse the impact of recent normalization agreements between Israel and Arab states, the upcoming Palestinian Authority elections, and how we can build a global socialist movement that tackles Israeli apartheid. Join Sumaya Awad, brian bean and Yara Hawari for a discussion on these themes, chaired by Ilan Pappé. A conversation about Palestine, socialism, and anti-imperialist solidarity, marking the release of Palestine: A Socialist Introduction. Join Sumaya Awad, brian bean, Khury Petersen-Smith, and Jehad Abusalim for a timely discussion about Palestine, socialism, and anti-imperialist solidarity across borders, marking the release of Palestine: A Socialist Introduction. Winning freedom in Palestine necessitates contending with the forces of capitalism, just as the struggle for socialism will have to take on US imperialism. A broadening movement of workers and activists see the injustices they oppose as common expressions of a cruel and irrational system—capitalism, and understand the need to posit a humane alternative: socialism. At the same time, the centrality of the Palestinian liberation struggle is becoming more and more apparent to leftists who see the relationship between liberation within the US and beyond its borders. As the US socialist movement continues to grow, it is critical that it embraces anti-imperialism, and the cause of Palestinian liberation in particular. Just as significantly, it is crucial that the growing Palestine movement orients toward socialist politics, as the only plausible means to achieve justice regionally and internationally. Sumaya Awad and brian bean, editors of Palestine: A Socialist Introduction, will be joined for a discussion about these themes by contributors Khury Petersen-Smith and Jehad Abusalim. A Civil Discussion About The BDS Movement w/ Peter Beinart & Omar Barghouti by Occupied Thoughts by FMEP
The Cycling Podcast this week is devoted this week to the 2018 Giro d'Italia, with the route for the 101st race unveiled on Wednesday. We discuss the route and Chris Froome's decision to try to win his first Giro before going for his fifth Tour de France. It was already known that the Giro would start in Israel, becoming the first grand tour to start outside Europe, but already this is generating controversy and headaches for RCS, the Giro organisers. We hear different viewpoints on the Israel start, with a report from Hannah Troop, who recently visited the country and interviewed members of the Israel Cycling Academy team, which seems certain to get a wildcard to start the race. We also have an interview with Omar Barghouti, a founding member of the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel and co-founder of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement. Barghouti is opposed to the Israel start, calling on RCS to exercise the "plan B" that he says is in place, and promising "non-violent protests" if it goes ahead. The Cycling Podcast is supported by Rapha and Science in Sport.
