Jewish Israeli dissident Ronnie Barkan, co-founder of "Boycott from Within," discusses the First Anti-Zionist Congress to be held in Vienna, Austria, on June 13, 2025. The congress aims to ensure anti-Zionist voices are heard globally, and that Israel is not the single legitimate representative of all Jewish people. Vienna was chosen as the location because it is the birthplace of Zionism. The congress features prominent speakers, such as Israeli historian and author Ilan Pappe, Holocaust survivor Stephen Kapos, Nakba Survivor and researcher Salman Abu Sitta, Dalia Sarig, co-founder of the “Not in our Name” initiative founded by Jews in Vienna, and others, including our guest Ronnie Barkan.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said "Conditions for Palestinians in Gaza are appalling and apocalyptic. What we are seeing may well amount to the gravest international crimes." Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, said, "We are fighting human animals and we are acting accordingly." Prominent Israeli scholars such as Omer Bartov, Raz Segal, Ilan Pappe, Lee Mordechai and Amos Goldberg, have all said Israel's actions in Gaza amount to genocide. Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, Jewish Voice for Peace, and other organizations have also reached the same conclusion. Apart from the U.S., Canada, and a few European countries Israel is largely isolated internationally. Arrest warrants for Prime Minister Netanyahu and Yoav Gallant have been issued by the International Criminal Court. Israel's goal in Gaza has been made explicitly clear by Netanyahu on down: eliminate the Palestinians. Recorded at the University of Wisconsin.

Can Zionism survive the current war in Gaza?Israeli historian Ilan Pappé believes it can't. In fact, he argues that the liberation of Palestine is an inevitability.Pappé is the author of 24 books on the Israel-Palestine conflict, and most recently published two books: ‘Lobbying for Zionism on Both Sides of the Atlantic' and ‘A Very Short History of the Israel-Palestine Conflict'.This week on The Big Picture Podcast, we sit down with Ilan Pappé to talk about where the Zionist project originates, why it embraced settler colonialism and why he believes it will ultimately fail to achieve its goals. We'd love to hear your thoughts on this episode, and any guests you'd like us to have on our show.
A myth is a story passed down through generations that attempts to explain the origins of something. The foundational myth of Israel was “a land without people for a people without a land.” That myth had profound consequences that reverberate today. There were people there - the Palestinians. Such myths are characteristic of settler colonial societies such as South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the U.S. Sure there were a few primitive savages but they had to give way to superior beings. John Kennedy famously said: “We stand today on the edge of a New Frontier. The pioneers gave up their safety, their comfort, and sometimes their lives to build our new west.” Kennedy did not mention the great Indigenous nations that were slaughtered by the colonizers. We must deconstruct the myths and reveal the realities behind them. Recorded at Socialism 2024.
It's Monday! Sam and Emma speak with Ilan Pappe, professor of history at the University of Exeter and Director of the European Centre for Palestine Studies, author of Lobbying for Zionism on Both Sides of the Atlantic, to discuss the state of affairs in the Middle East a year after October 7th, 2023. Then she speaks with Rakan Abed El Rahman, correspondent at the National News stationed in the Gaza Strip, to discuss what it has been like reporting on the Israel/Gaza conflict since October 7th of last year. First, Emma runs through updates on today's voter registration deadlines, Israel's decimation of Gaza, the IDF's failing invasion of Southern Lebanon, Blinken's role in approving the IDF's bombing of aid trucks in Gaza, France's military aid to Israel, the Harris campaign, SCOTUS, Biden's immigration policy, and the impending Hurricane Milton, before parsing through Elon Musk's simultaneously cringeworthy and genuinely concerning appearance at Trump's rally in PA. Professor Ilan Pappé then joins, diving right into the rapid escalation and exacerbation of Israeli society and the Israeli state's genocidal desires, first tackling the clear signs of the citizenry's right-wing turn and the Netanyahu Administration's messianic nature in the wake of the 2022 elections, before unpacking his thoughts on how the rapid radicalization during Israel's brutal ethnic cleansing of Gaza (now expanded into a regional conflict) has exposed extensive cracks in the state of Israel. After briefly touching on the role of Israeli's backlash to Netanyahu's fascistic judiciary reforms – and the particular dearth of any connection between the violence imposed on Palestinians and the fascism coming home to roost – in demonstrating the precarious state of the country, Professor Pappé steps back to explore this evolution as a natural progression of right-wing colonial ideology in direct conflict with the world it's invading, bolstered by Israel's proactive violence in stamping out any conditions for change. Ilan then walks Sam and Emma through the evolution of the super-alliance that backs the Zionist state, exploring the movement's roots in an Evangelical Christian movement that sought to capitalize on anti-Semitic sentiment and the growing aims of the British Empire, putting together an overwhelmingly powerful coalition before the Jewish community even came to the fore, also looking at the incredible evolution of the Zionist lobby in the United States and how Israel's ability to stamp out conditions for change extends well beyond its border. After expanding on the ever-growing international backlash to Israel's genocidal apartheid regime, Pappé dives deep into the need to recenter Palestinian actors in this fight, and what must be done to achieve decolonization in the region as quickly and with as little violence as possible. Rakan Abed El Rahman then looks to the ongoing devastation Israel is inflicting on the Gaza Strip, unpacking the ever-rising death toll, the debilitating material and mental conditions, and the complete decimation of civilian sectors in the region, before stepping back to outline how very real (while certainly less extreme) all of those issues were *prior* to October 7th of last year. Expanding on this, El Rahman walks Emma through the near-total nature of Israel's reign of terror in Gaza since Hamas' attack last October, even in contrast with Israel's other major offensives against Gaza over the last two decades, before wrapping up by sharing his (and others') experiences of Israel's explicit and targeted terrorizing of journalists and medical personnel, and the insane need for the West (and Israel) to recognize Palestinians as humans rather than terrorists. And in the Fun Half: Emma and the MR Team reflect on the Veepstakes after last week's debate, parse through Donald Trump's recent comments on the real estate value of colonizing Gaza, and watch Google's former CEO attempt to argue that providing infinite growth for AI is more important than tackling climate change. Almost a year into its war on Gaza, Israel is fighting on multiple fronts. So far, it doesn't seem to have achieved any of its stated war goals. Does the military have a clear plan? Or is it solely intent on degrading its enemies' capabilities? In this episode: Daniel Levy, President, U.S./ Middle East Project. Meron Rapoport, Award-winning Israeli Investigative Journalist. The back story in journalism and scholarship uncovers vital information on important issues that had been obscured or omitted. For example, the origin of Zionism is usually traced to a pamphlet Theodor Herzl wrote in 1896 called The Jewish State. However, the eminent Israeli scholar Ilan Pappe writes "Many people do not know that Zionism began as an evangelical Christian project long before any Jew was thinking about Zionism. Christian Zionists were advocating the establishment of a Jewish state in Palestine knowing very well that there were other people living there” but thought that the creation of a Jewish state would not only advance British imperial interests but also “precipitate the second coming of the Messiah.” Recorded at the University of Massachusetts.

Gaza's 2 million plus Palestinians are jam-packed in a small narrow enclave bordered by the Mediterranean Sea, Egypt and Israel. Since 2007 it has been ruled by Hamas. Hamas is an Arabic acronym for the Islamic Resistance Movement. Israel immediately imposed a blockade. Since then, Gaza has routinely been called the world's largest open-air prison. Its air, land and sea routes are controlled by Israel. On October 7th, Hamas attacked Israel resulting in over 1,100 Israelis dead and the taking of several hundred hostages. Israel, with one of the world's most advanced militaries, responded. Today, Gaza is in ruins. Palestinians have been killed and wounded in the tens of thousands. It has become, the UN says, “a graveyard.” How did this catastrophic situation develop? How did Gaza become Gaza?

On this edition of Parallax Views, the University of Maryland's Prof. Shay Hazkani, a former Israeli journalist turned historian, joins the show to discuss the major themes of his book Dear Palestine: A Social History of the 1948 War and documentary The Soldier's Opinion in light of the Gaza War, settler violence in the West Bank, and the October 7th Hamas attack. Prof. Hazkani provides a fresh, illuminating perspective on the 1948 Arab-Israeli War that contributes a great deal to discussion of Israel/Palestine. Specifically, he takes the approach of looking at how non-elites, especially soldiers, viewed/perceived the war compared to elites on both the Israeli and Arab sides of the conflict. We'll delve deep into this as well as Prof. Hazkani's battles with the Israeli Supreme Court over the fight to declassify documents in Israel's archives; how Prof. Hazkani's work overlaps with that of the Israeli New Historians like Benny Morris, Avi Shlaim, and Ilan Pappe (as well as how it differs from those works); propaganda and the mythologies of war (and how said propaganda and myths are generated); some of the myths that Prof. Hazkoni specifically busts in the book; the damage books like Joan Peters' From Time Immemorial have caused to properly understanding Israel/Palestine; the Arab Liberation Army; how then-recent American Jewish immigrants perceived events unfolding at the time compared to Jews who had immigrated prior; and much, much more. And yes, we will discuss all of this within the context of the current Gaza War and violence in the West Bank. Prof. Hazkoni will delve into his fears about what is transpiring currently, especially with regards to messianic right-wing elements in Israeli society like the Religious Zionists, as well as how the parallels between 1948 and today. All that and more on this must-listen edition of Parallax Views!

Mark Mazover'in “Selanik”i ve Barbara Jelavich'in iki ciltlik “Balkan Tarihi” keza gözden kaçırılmaması gereken kitaplar. Mağrib-Endülüs: Prof. Dr. İsmail Ceran'ın “Fas Tarihi”, Lucette Valensi imzalı “Avrupa'da Müslümanlar” ve Matthew Carr'ın “Kan ve İman”ıyla birlikte okunmalı. Bunlara bir de Maria Rosa Menocal'in ölümsüz eseri “Dünyanın İncisi Endülüs”, Hugh Kennedy'nin “Endülüs - Müslüman İspanya ve Portekiz'in Siyasî Tarihi” ve Prof. Dr. Mehmet Özdemir'in artık klasik bir başvuru kaynağına dönüşen “Endülüs” adlı kitabı eklenirse tamamdır. Afrika: Prof. Dr. Ahmet Kavas'ın “Geçmişten Günümüze Afrika” adlı kitabı, sıkı bir başlangıç için ideal. Dr. Murat Yiğit'in yakın dönemde yayınlanan “Afrika'da Askeri Darbeler ve Dış Müdahale” adlı hacimli çalışması, dikkat çekici detaylar sunuyor.

Audio bronnen en citaten: NOS Jaaroverzichten, Polygoon Journaal, BBC, UN Audiovisual Library, The Palestinian Museum Digital Archive.Documenten: United Nations Special Committee on Palestine (UNSCOP) (1947); United Nations Palestine Commission (UNPAC) (1948); United Nations Mediator for Palestine (1948-1949); Question of Palestine.Documentaires: Tantura, Alon Schwartz (2022), Looted and Hidden: Palestinian Archives in Israel, Rona Sela (2017); Born in Deir Yassin, Neta Shoshani (2017)Boeken: De etnische zuivering van Palestina, Ilan Pappe (2008); De Nakba: de etnische zuivering van Palestina, Ilan Pappe (2023); The Palestinian Nakba: Decolonising History, Narrating the Subaltern, Reclaiming Memory, Nur Masalha (2012); All That Remains, Walid Khalidi (1992); Khirbet Khizeh, S. On this edition of Parallax Views, we dive into Israel/Palestine history, including such troubling topics as the Nakba (the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in 1948) and the Tantura Massacre (as well as it's suppression in Israel and Israeli academia), with noted historian Ilan Pappe. Alongside figures like Benny Morris and Avi Shlaim, Pappe was one of the Israeli "New Historians" who shed light on aspects of Zionist and Israeli history (specifically the founding of Israel) that challenged conventional/traditional narratives. Joining me as a guest co-host on this edition of the program is "Karl Barx" (or Bassam) of the West Bank Robbery podcast. The conversation begins with Prof. Pappe offering his thoughts on the ongoing Israeli bombardment of Gaza which has claimed 20,000+ lives. We then delve into Prof. Pappe's journey away from political Zionism and taking a critical approach intellectually to the history of Israel and its policies. In this we regard, we end up discussing the impact of Israel's 1982 invasion of Lebanon, the first Intifada, and Prof. Pappe's service in the IDF. During the course of our conversation, we also cover: - Propaganda, dehumanization of Palestinians, and the ways in which propaganda lays upon layers of history - What has changed in Israeli narratives before the October 7th Hamas attack and now? - The argument that once Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Likud Party are gone the Israeli center or Israeli left will be able to change the Israel/Palestine situation in a radical way - Laying out the two camps within elite Israeli politics; the Israeli messianic far-right (the state of Judea) vs. secular Zionists (the state of Israel); how do Palestinians see the internal political dynamic between the two camps? - Prof. Pappe's archival work as a historian; the documents he went through showing evidence of the ethnic cleansing/expulsion of of Palestinians in 1948; declassification laws in Israel; the "Village Files" and their importance to Prof. Pappe's scholarship; suppression and reclassification of historical documents; the importance of copying and preserving documents; the importance of juxtaposing different archives - Plan Dalet or Plan D as the blueprint for the destruction of Palestinian villages and the expulsion of Palestinians in 1948; Direct Orders documentation and the specific importance of Order #40 of 1948 in relation to Israeli settlements and what is happening in Gaza today; the names of Israeli operations in the 20th century and why the specific names are important in regards to what they tells us about Israeli policy towards Palestinians - Yitzhak Rabin, The Jordanian Option, and the mass arrest of Palestinian activists in the 1970s; the origins of Israeli policies seeking to attack secular, left-wing Palestinian activists and promoting Islamic, right-wing factions at the expense of those left-wing elements as a divide-and-conquer strategy - The Tantura Massacre, micro-history, the suppression of the Tantura massacre in Israeli society and Israeli academia, and how both Prof. Pappe and one of his students, Theodore Katz, suffered major academic setback due to said student investigating the massacre; a brief rundown of the Katz Affair and the ways in which Katz and Pappe were both later vindicated in regard to the Tantura case - The myths about Israel with a particular focus on Nakba denial and Joan Peters' historically inaccurate From Time Immemorial; what Prof. Pappe considers the most noxious myths about Israel - Noam Chomsky and the question of political Zionism vs. cultural Zionism; the One Democratic State Campaign and protections for Jewish identity in a one-state Israel; where Prof. Pappe potentially disagree or takes issue with the political vs. cultural Zionism distinction - And more!

On this edition of Parallax Views, a double feature continuing our coverage of Israel/Palestine. First up, Democratic Socialists of America member and Jacobin contributor Yaseen Al-Sheikh (aka Y.L. Al-Sheikh) joins the show to discuss the DSA perspective on the Gaza War and Israel/Palestine. We'll also be hearing Yaseen's perspective as a Palestinian. And yes, we do cover the controversy around the DSA that has arisen in the media since the October 7th Hamas attack. On the second segment of the show, Bassam of the West Bank Robbery podcast joins as special guest co-host to speak with Belgium-based French author, filmmaker, and longtime pro-Palestinian activist Frank Barat. Frank has interviewed such influential figures as philosopher Judith Butler, UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese, and Israeli historian Ilan Pappe on issues related to Israel's bombing of Gaza and Palestinian liberation. Frank will talk about his involvement with the Palestinian cinema/film community, his work with the Russell Tribunal on Palestine, and more.
Guest: Ilan Pappe is the Director of European Center of Palestine Studies at the University of Exeter. He has published many books on the Middle East and on the Palestine Question, including The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine, The Modern Middle East, Ten Myths about Israel, and A History of Modern Palestine. For November, we discuss Ten Myths about Israel by Ilan Pappe! We discuss our own misconceptions and myths we have about Israel and Palestine, socialism and Zionism, an interesting discussion about Hamas, one state solution and how we can support the Pro-Palestinian side. What happened after the armistice in January of 1949? Of course, the major consequence was the Palestinian refugees. Thinking only of what we consider the internationally recognized boundaries of Israel, probably 80% or more of all the Palestinians inside of that area on January 1, 1948 were gone by December 31, 1948. This is the real “catastrophe,” or nakhba, as the Palestinians call it. The Israelis were insistent that none of these refugees would be allowed to return. I am very sorry I can't deliver an hour-long talk on the refugee situation. I am just not sure how to make it work. Still, I have tried to incorporate key points into this talk and into the previous talk on the Palestine War of 1948. And again, I invite you to go to Deep Blue (see that previous podcast if you are unclear) where I have posted my briefing document on The Palestinian Refugees of 1948. As of April, 2021 this document has nearly 13,000 downloads from around the world. It is a very thorough summary of the data on the refugees, of the recent research on the topic, of the personal stories of what happened, and of the argumentation. For those interested in this subject, it is a valuable source. If you would like to read a short novel consider Khirbet Khizeh by S. Yizhar. The author was a noted literary figure (Yizhar Smilansky) who concealed his true identity so he could tell what happened when his unit took control of a Palestinian village in 1948. It was translated into English in 2008. It shocked many Israelis to realize that a person of such literary stature had experienced these things. I mentioned the mayor of El Bireh, a Palestinian town just 10 miles north of Jerusalem. His name was Abdul Jawad Saleh. I met him in Amman in 1987. He was one of the most respected of the Palestinian leaders and was later put in charge of the PLO treasury because everyone trusted him. He told me that one evening he had a knock at the door and two soldiers told him the governor wanted to talk to him. This was not unusual so he went without resistance. But they took him to the Jordan border (I think in the southern desert) and pushed him into Jordan. They then announced on the radio that he had been expelled. The Jordanians rushed units into the area to find him before he died of thirst. I met him in his apartment. His daughter was visiting and his grandson. He was the person who made the map of the dead cities and villages of Palestine. I asked him why they had expelled him (which is a violation of international law, by the way). He said they never tell you why they are expelling you or detaining you but he thought it had to do with the fact that the city was erecting a “mother statue.” It depicts a mother lifting her child to reach for a goal. It is obviously a metaphor for the Palestinian situation. He thought it was just too symbolically powerful for the Israelis. When the archives were opened by Menachem Begin in the late 1970s, Israeli scholars plunged in. By the late 1980s, they produced a new wave of histories that went beyond wartime hero narratives but relied heavily upon primary source materials: diaries and journals and memos. They were called the New Historians. Their research exploded myths about how the Palestinians had fled of their own will, for example or that the military maintained a “purity of arms.” Ilan Pappe and Avi Shlaim and Simcha Flappan were three of these. Tom Segev's book, The First Israelis, focusing upon 1949, after the fighting was over, brings surprising new perspectives to the issues. These historians are hated by those on the Israeli right.
It has occurred to me that there is great interest in the background to the current conflict. Here is a discussion of the Palestinian Refugees of 1948. This is an extremely important topic surrounded by false narratives and inflammatory rhetoric. I have put off preparing a podcast for some time, but not because it is sensitive. I deal with quite a few sensitive topics. It goes with the territory. But in this case, a reason for my hesitation is that I have a written briefing document that is the basis of this podcast. It is very thorough and is fully available to anyone through Deep Blue. (See the separate podcast on how to access Deep Blue). It has the same title as this podcast. But I have thought for some time that transferring that written document to a podcast would be a good thing. My hesitation is that I will be reading and improvising from a printed text into the spoken word. I am worried about jumps and stops and stumbles along the way. I hope those who listen to this will find it useful. It will certainly introduce some information that is new to most of you. And if you also want to download the document from Deep Blue that is good given that it has additional information in it. https://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/handle/2027.42/110670Note that there are previous podcasts on The Palestine War of 1948, and The Palestinians After 1948. It's another EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Blair LM Kelley, director of The Center for the Study of the American South at the University of North Carolina, to discuss her recent book Black Folk: The Roots of the Black Working Class. First, Emma runs through updates on Biden's call for a humanitarian pause in Gaza, Dick Durbin's call for a ceasefire, the death toll in Gaza, the split between House and Senate GOP, the failure of both censure votes in the House, Oregon's teachers strike, and legal battles involving Trump and trans rights, before parsing through Lindsay Graham's despicable response to Israel's bombing of Palestinians civilians. Blair LM Kelley then joins, jumping right into the absurd presentation of the working class in US politics, with a consistent focus on rural and suburban white populations despite the long and intricate history of a Black and POC working class in the US. First, Kelley steps back and parses through her own family's history as members of the Black working class in the US, exploring how they were barred from working the jobs that they were skilled in or that allowed them any economic or social freedom – a practice deeply embedded in the US' history well after the Civil War – before stepping back to analyze how this systemic deskilling of African Americans alongside the social segregation worked to shape the stereotypes of Black Americans as dependent on the government, despite the constant reality of Black Americans paying the same taxes and receiving drastically fewer benefits. Skipping a couple of centuries forward, Kelley then walks Emma through the role of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the designation of “essential” workers, in bringing the problem of proper compensation and fair working conditions for Black and POC Americans back to the fore. Next, Kelley looks at the industry of domestic labor as a central institution in the stunting of labor rights and conditions for Black and POC Americans – particularly women – before wrapping up with the myth of the “Working Class Trump Voter” and the intense intersection between labor and citizenship in the topic at hand. Emma also touches on the recent raid of a top Eric Adams fundraiser by the FBI and NYPD. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they parse Bernice King's response to Amy Schumer's use of MLK to justify the bombing of Gaza, and watch Ilan Pappe examine the long history of Israeli propaganda attempting to instil fear in Jews everywhere. Phillip from St. Louis gives some updates on the ongoing pharmacist strikes, and Will from Virginia discusses Israel's role as a specifically European settler colonial project, as exemplified by Israel's oppression of various non-zionist Jewish communities. Tim Pool looks stupid and knows nothing, and Rand Paul takes a stand on Gaza further to the left of Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, plus, your calls and IMs! Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak with Ilan Pappe, professor of history at the University of Exeter and Director of the European Centre for Palestine Studies, to discuss the ongoing conflict in Israel and Gaza. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Israel's continuing bombardment of the people of Gaza, their expanding attack in the West Bank, global pro-Palestine action, the GOP's speakership clown car, SAG-AFTRA's strike, crime rates, and local news funding, before parsing through the hilarious task that is being a republican talking to media right now. Professor Pappe then joins, diving right into Israel's response to the Hamas attacks on October 7th, including the media's persistent revenge narrative arming the population for a compassionless siege on Gaza, the pervasive understanding by Israeli civilians that the Israeli army and government can't and won't protect them, and why – despite seeing the necessity – the Israeli public is not open to a discussion of alternatives to Israeli occupation. Stepping back, Professor Pappe then walks Sam and Emma through the genesis of the Zionist movement as an attempt to redefine Jewish identity as a nationality amid increasing persecution (and national-identity building) in 19th-century Europe, tackling backing of the project by European states and the US during the onset of the 20th Century, as they sought a clean expulsion of Jews from Europe, with an extra emphasis for the British on expanding their sphere of influence. After expanding on the Western-led colonial structure of the establishment of Israel – particularly in the ethnic cleansing of local populations – Ilan Pappe walks through the thriving cosmopolitan world of pre-Israel Palestine, one in which communities and religions coexisted, as a proper pretext for a discussion of the following eviction and cleansing of these local populations in the leadup to the Nakba in 1948, also touching on the use of Europe's own crimes against Jewish people as a justification for the violence being imposed upon the Palestinians from 1948 on. Wrapping up, Sam, Emma, and Professor Pappe explore the obvious failings of an Israeli two-state solution, why a single multi-racial, multi-ethnic democracy with full rights for Palestinians is the only viable option, and how Israel and Palestine are reading the international responses to the occupation. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma parse through the devastating numbers on Israel's leveling of Gaza, watch the US try to defend vetoing a ceasefire to the UN, and Ilhan Omar's response to another callous questioning of her empathy for Palestinians. After a longer conversation on the failure of the Democratic establishment's response to Israeli war crimes, Sam and Emma spend a little time basking in the shame and incompetence of the House GOP, plus, your IMs! Politik Siyonizm'in modern dönemdeki kurucusu Theodor Herzl'in yakın arkadaşlarından Israel Zangwill, 1905 yazında İsviçre'nin Basel kentinde toplanan Yedinci Siyonist Kongre'den sonra, ana akım Siyonizm'den ayrılarak kendi grubunu (“Bölgesel Siyonizm”) oluşturdu. Israel Zangwill'in kendi yolunu çizdiği Yedinci Siyonist Kongre, Theodor Herzl'in Yahudiler için yurt olarak Uganda'yı teklif etmesiyle patlak veren tartışmaların gölgesinde toplanmıştı. This week on Talk World Radio we're discussing the ethnic cleansing of Palestine. Professor Ilan Pappe is the Director of the European Center for Palestine Studies and a senior fellow of the Institute for Arab and Islamic Studies at the University of Exeter, UK. Pappe is the author of 20 books his two most recent ones are Our Vision for Liberation, with Ramzy Baroud and The Historical Dictionary of Palestine with Johnny Mansour. His most known work is the 2006 book The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine and he also co-authored two books with Noam Chomsky.
Season 3 ends with a fantastic guest: Ilan Pappe. In this intimate episode, the most famous Israeli historian talks about his early life and work, the journey to discover the real meaning of Israeli rule over the Palestinians and how he started, through his work, to fight back and offer an alternative historical narrative from the traditional Zionist one. As we discussed his early work on the Husayni family we delved into the politics of Jerusalem and the growing criticism against segregation and apartheid. We also discussed 1948, particularly in relation to the ways in which this historical period is taught in Israeli schools and the perpetuation of myths and stereotypes: a fitting episode for a season finale. Acclaimed journalist and filmmaker John Pilger on the changes that have come over Palestine since the making of his film ‘Palestine is Still the Issue', released in 1974 & 2002. We will start by screening the film. The past two decades have seen an extreme turn to the right in Israeli politics with grave consequences for Palestine and its quest for independence, including four major Israeli attacks against Gaza. Pilger and Israeli historian Ilan Pappé, who appeared in the 2002 film, will discuss the worsening situation over the decades for Palestinians and where the future of Palestine and Israeli is headed. Pappé is the author of many books, including ‘The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine', in which he documents that ethnic cleansing was a long-standing Zionist goal that was planned in detail by Ben-Gurion in the Red House headquarters outside Tel Aviv and included a much greater number of atrocities against Palestinians in the establishment of Israel in the late 1940s. Pappé says it was the start of a process of ethnic cleansing that continues until today. "Denied for almost six decades, had it happened today it could only have been called "ethnic cleansing". Decisively debunking the myth that the Palestinian population left of their own accord in the course of this war, Ilan Pappe offers impressive archival evidence to demonstrate that, from its very inception, a central plank in Israel's founding ideology was the forcible removal of the indigenous population. Indispensable for anyone interested in the current crisis in the Middle East
On the show, Chris Hedges discusses the Israeli-Palestinian conflict with Professor Ilan Pappe from the University of Exeter. The Biden administration has turned its back on the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, always more political theater than an honest effort by the United States to broker an equitable agreement between the Palestinians and the Israelis. This means the brutal military occupation in the West Bank and East Jerusalem will continue, the 15-year siege in Gaza, which includes frequent Israeli bombardments that have resulted in the deaths of hundreds of Palestinian noncombatants, will continue, the Palestinian diaspora will not be permitted to return, the Israeli seizure of Palestinian land and bulldozing of Palestinian homes will expand, the US Embassy, moved by Donald Trump to Jerusalem in violation of international law, will remain in the city, the United States will continue to provide a staggering $4 billion in military aid a year to Israel, part of the some $85 billion in US military aid provided to Israeli since its founding, the Jewish settlements on Palestinian land will expand and the apartheid Israeli state, now led by Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, who has called on Israelis to be willing to sacrifice their lives to annex the occupied West Bank into Israel, will treat the Israeli Arabs living inside its borders as second- and third-class citizens. Israel, in short, will methodically roll forward with what the Israeli human rights organization B'Tselem calls “a regime of Jewish supremacy,” a project, the Israeli historian Ilan Pappe writes, that has been the cornerstone of Israeli policy since the state was founded in 1948. Professor Ilan Pappe teaches at the College of Social Sciences and International Studies at the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom, and is the director of the university's European Center for Palestine Studies. He is the author of a dozen books, including ‘The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine', ‘The Modern Middle East', ‘A History of Modern Palestine: One Land, Two Peoples', ‘Britain and the Arab-Israeli Conflict' and his latest, ‘The Biggest Prison on Earth: A History of the Occupied territories'.
The Palestinian Refugees of 1948This is an extremely important topic surrounded by false narratives and inflammatory rhetoric. As of 1 September 2021 it has 13,000+ downloads worldwide. https://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/handle/2027.42/110670Note that there are previous podcasts on The Palestine War of 1948, and The Palestinians After 1948. This is the audio of the recent video interview, sharing the title of this podcast episode. In the interview, Paul speaks with renowned Israeli historian and activist, Ilan Pappe, on the history of Palestine, the ongoing attempt by Israel to ethnically cleanse the Palestinian people (within and outside the illegally occupied Palestinian territories by the state) and, finally, how Israel has been relatively successful in avoiding prosecution for crimes against humanity, including major public relations campaigns—branding it as “progressive” and “democratic.” Ilan sheds light on how such branding is now being undermined by independent and social media, exposing the darker and inhumane side of Israel, while also galvanizing international support for the Palestinian struggle for justice. This week we cover Deuteronomy chapters 1-12. Moses gets nostalgic and retells the same stories from Exodus and Numbers, Yahweh commands the Israelites to love him (pretty sure that's not how love works), and Ashton can't help but do some more math. Most importantly, we'll discuss the historical context of Deuteronomy and what motivates the Deuteronomist to rewrite old myths.Donate to https://www.rebuildingalliance.org.
On this episode of Going Underground, we speak to world-renowned Israeli historian Prof. Ilan Pappe. He discusses the situation in Gaza and the West Bank on Palestinian Prisoner Day, the strength of the pro-Israel lobby in both the UK and the United States, why the ‘two-state solution’ is a cover for the West’s inaction, the pro-Palestinian shift in American public opinion, the anti-Semitism allegations that brought down Jeremy Corbyn, and much more! Next, we speak to Sinn Fein’s Francie Molloy MP. He discusses the recent violence in Northern Ireland, Arlene Foster’s contact with Protestant paramilitaries, alleged whipping-up of loyalist anger by the DUP over Brexit and Protestant anxieties about a United Ireland, Michelle O’Neill’s attendance at an IRA funeral, anger over the Northern Ireland Protocol as part of Boris Johnson’s Brexit, and much more!
This episode begins an analysis of Ilan Pappe's book The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine. It documents the ethnic cleansing of Jews that took place during the three decades that preceded Israel's War of Independence (which Palestinians commonly call the Nakba) and during the war itself. Selected Bibliography: Shabtai Zecharia, Unkown Jerusalem (Hebrew Book) Reuven Gafni: A Hebrew Spot in Beit Shean (Hebrew Book); Lone Jewish Medical Personnel in Arab Towns; The Jewish Presence in Jericho during the British Mandate Period (Hebrew Article); The Jewish Presence in Nazareth (Hebrew Article); Jewish Communities on the Periphery (Hebrew Article); Emek Arazim (Hebrew Article). The decades-long one-sided Washington policy in favor of Israel reached new heights during the Trump regime. The peace process is a joke. The ever-expanding Jewish-only colonies, known euphemistically as settlements, have grown ever larger. The possibility of a sovereign, viable Palestinian state has dramatically receded. Yet, despite the occupation, the Palestinians practice, what is called in Arabic, al-sumud, steadfastness. They stay on the land and resist. What’s next?
Don't know much about Israel and Palestine? This is a really good place to start, navigated by the Chair of History at Exeter University, Ilan Pappe. Ilan Pappe was born in Israel to parents who fled Germany in the 1930s. He is a historian, author of The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine and (with Noam Chomsky) On Palestine. This episode features an interview with Ilan Pappe in which we talk about Zionism, anti-Semitism, whether Israel is an Apartheid state, settlements and the Christian Zionist movement. Laura, Malky and Jonty also talk about anti-Semitism and racism. It's a sad fact that we even feel we need to say this, but, since there are so many fascists out there, we do: don't come to this podcast because you believe in some Jewish conspiracy or have anti-Semitic feelings. You are not our friend. You are in error and on the side of evil and need to repent. We rebuke you. But if you, like us, believe that racism is evil, you're very welcome. On this episode of Going Underground, we speak to Prof. Ilan Pappe, author of ‘The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine’ after Nakba Day. He discusses the historical significance of Nakba Day and the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians by Zionist pro-Israel forces in 1948, the conflation of anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism, whether Israel is using coronavirus as an opportunity to further its attempts to annex the West Bank, why the Israeli blockade on Gaza is worse for Palestinians than Covid-19, the unity government of Benny Gantz and Benjamin Netanyahu, the lack of an opposing ideology against Likud, and more! This podcast is a recording of the talk by the acclaimed Israeli historian where he discussed a book which has been called “critical for understanding the present situation and looking forward to possible solutions”. About the Book Shortlisted for the Palestine Book Awards 2017 From the author of the bestselling The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine – the seminal study of the 1948 Nakba and the violent creation of the State of Israel – comes an incisive look at the Occupied Palestinian Territories, picking up the story where that book left off. In this comprehensive exploration of one of the world's most prolonged and tragic conflicts, Pappe uses recently declassified archival material to analyse the motivations and strategies of the generals and politicians – and the decision-making process itself – that laid the foundation of Israel's occupation of the West Bank and Gaza. From a survey of the legal and bureaucratic infrastructures that were put in place to control the population of over one million Palestinians, to the security mechanisms that vigorously enforced that control, Pappe paints a picture of what is to all intents and purposes the world's largest ‘open prison'. About the Author Ilan Pappe is Professor of History at the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies at the College of Social Sciences and International Studies and Director of the European Centre for Palestine Studies at the University of Exeter, and the author of over a dozen books including the bestselling The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine, A History of Modern Palestine, The Idea of Israel, Ten Myths About Israel and The Forgotten Palestinians: A History of the Palestinians in Israel. In this Interview Khalil Bendib talks with the Israeli scholar Ilan Pappé about his book "On Palestine" which he co-authored with Noam Chomsky. Published in the aftermath of Israel's offensive on Gaza known as "Operation Protective Edge" which left thousands of Palestinians dead and cleared the way for another Israeli land grab. Khalil asks Pappe about where he agrees and disagrees with Chomsky, the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement and the comparisons with apartheid in South Africa.
Is there a country in the world that attracts so much criticism as Israel? Studies consistently show Israel to be one of the most disliked nations in the world (along with Iran and North Korea). But how much of this is to do with genuine concern about Israel’s actions, and how much is actually a cover for the age-old hatred of the Jews?In this week's podcast Mehdi Hasan of The Intercept and the Israeli historian Ilan Pappe go head to head against Times columnist Melanie Phillips and Israeli former Member of the Knesset Einat Wilf. In this week's program, we'll have a conversation with prominent Israeli scholar Ilan Pappé about his new book The Idea of Israel, A History of Power and Knowledge. In it, Pappe examines the way successive generations of Israeli historians have framed the 1948 conquest as a “liberation campaign,” and created a foundation myth that went unquestioned in Israeli society until the 1990s. Mr. Pappe's new book has been described as a powerful and urgent intervention in the war of ideas concerning the past, and the future, of the Israel and Palestine. This week's program: Democracy in the Middle East and North Africa; Tunisia, Egypt, Iran, Yemen, Bahrain…, but does that concept extend to Israel/Palestine and can democracy be reconciled with colonialism, or is that a contradiction in terms? In his latest book, Out of the Frame, prominent Israeli scholar Dr. Ilan Pappe examines this question in depth while recounting the tale of his political evolution from staunch Zionist as a youngster to liberated humanist as an adult. Ilan Pappé, is Professor of History at the University of Exeter in the UK, where he is also Co-director of the Exeter Center for Ethno-Political Studies, and Director of the Palestine Studies Centre. He is author of the bestselling The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine, A History of Modern Palestine, The Israel/Palestine Question, and is a long time political activist.
