This interview was recorded with Anas Arafat in Gaza and Laura Schleifer in the US on May 17, 2025. We are very grateful for their time and their work, and the unimaginable hardship that Anas is enduring in Gaza. We thank them for this interview. Our conversation starts with the formation of Plant the Land Team Gaza as a grassroot collaboration between local Gazan community activists and international solidarity activists within the vegan community and beyond to provide life-sustaining foods and services in a way that respects and sustains all life.  Anas shares details of the situation in Gaza since the blockaid of all aid including food, water and medical supplies since March 2. Palestinians are suffering immense hardship with ongoing violence under the illegal occupation of their land and the genocide and ethnic cleansing being committed by the state of Israel.  We discuss the Nakba: both in it's remembrance this week and the ongoing Nakba being perpetrated in Gaza and the West Bank. Anas and Laura talk about Palestinian solidarity and what people can do to support Palestine.  Please follow Plant the Land Team Gaza here:  https://www.planttheland.org/  https://www.facebook.com/PlantTheLandTeamGaza  Anas on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100008448283358  Laura on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100008448283358 Also the BDS Movement https://bdsmovement.net/ Vegan BDS https://www.instagram.com/veganbds/   Links to fundraisers that will get dontions directly to Anas in Gaza to continue this work: - GoFundMe: Support Mutual aid in Gaza fundraiser (AUD) https://www.gofundme.com/f/support-mutual-aid-in-gaza - Muslim Giving: Help for Gaza fundraiser (Pounds Stirling) https://www.muslimgiving.org/g4za2025?fbclid=IwY2xjawKV-PVleHRuA2FlbQIxMABicmlkETEycm5BQnB5c0Y2MlVFYzkzAR5IolTSUK4DGseF8PgoHe_e6XCyU2N2RcAuMoa9ibUHLj3MXlKg006lNTB__Q_aem_fEs35cZScBkRLsHgbw6N1w  - Bonfire Plant the Land Team Gaza t-shirt fundraiser (USD) https://www.bonfire.com/plant-the-land-team-gaza-1/  Music we played on the show:  - Falstini Ana by Zain Daqqa  - Ya Tal3een by Dana Salah Please note that due to copyright legislation we are not able to include the songs in our podcast. A More Civilized Age will not be covering Andor Season 2 as planned, due the the ongoing boycott of Disney Plus by the BDS Movement. This is a surprise to us, as it is likely to you and some explanation is required. Last year, the BDS movement targeted Disney Plus for boycott on the grounds that it has cast Israeli actors in its films who have been cultural ambassadors for Israel and do not support the Palestinian cause for liberation or justice. Additionally, Marvel films have made use of characters who have a history in the comics of being connected to positive depictions of Israel and its intelligence service, the Mossad. We were not aware of this boycott when it was declared, and we were not aware of it when we covered Skeleton Crew earlier this year. We are aware of it now, however, and in becoming aware of it, we had to make an affirmative choice that our ignorance had permitted us to avoid. We were not agreed as to what that choice should be. However, what was clear was that if we went ahead with covering Andor Season 2 while this boycott was in place, we would be arriving at an unacceptable outcome. It was either demand members be willing to compromise their own values and do work they did not feel they could perform in good conscience, or it was to go ahead with a partial panel until we were again able to cover something that was not covered by a BDS boycott. This has been a challenging moment for us. We are all firmly committed to the cause of Palestinian liberation and the end of the ongoing genocide perpetrated by Israel under the pretext of waging a war in response to the October 7, 2023 attacks. However, we have differences of opinion and standards of personal and professional obligations when it comes to how we respond to the Boycott, Divest, and Sanction movement and all its calls for action. Those differences were intensified by the compressed time-frame in which we had to have this discussion. We include these details because it is important to acknowledge that on this point there is real disagreement among us which prevents us from making a more straightforward statement. Similar disagreements will certainly arise in the future, and our views will also continue to evolve and change. However, it's also important to note that we can disagree pretty strongly and continue to work together to make AMCA as good as it can be, a show that every member can participate and take pride in. But we do have news on what we'll be covering next. Beginning in May, we'll be kicking off our coverage of Knights of the Old Republic II. We'll have more info on how we'll be covering that game, what mods (if any) we end up using, and more soon. We thank you so much for your patience. This has been as much of a surprise for us as it is for you, but we're going to focus on making the best possible show we can as we continue to move through the Star Wars catalog. What does it mean for a university to become a battleground against deep-seated prejudices and historical tensions? In today's episode, we dive into these challenging questions with our distinguished guest, Cary Nelson, a celebrated scholar and ardent advocate for academic freedom.Nelson shares his insights on the intersection of anti-Zionism and anti-Semitism in academia, a topic explored in his new book, "Mindless: What Happened to Universities?" The conversation examines how the lines between critique of Israel and hostility towards Jewish students blur, becoming toxic and divisive forces across campuses, from historical shifts that turned post-1948 anti-Zionism into a rejection of Israel's existence to the phenomenon of hatred and the campus protests that undermine foundational academic values. Nelson calls for reclaiming the core purpose of academia as a community of imperfect learners where dialogue and understanding prevail. In This Episode:Historical context of anti-Zionism and its transformation into anti-SemitismThe unique pressures faced by Jewish students on campusesThe role of social media in spreading campus protestsDistinctions between psychological and intellectual safety in AcademiaThe undermining of the university's role as a space for diverse perspectives About Cary:Cary Nelson is Jubilee Professor of Liberal Arts & Sciences Emeritus at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and an affiliated faculty member at the University of Haifa. He holds an honorary doctorate from Ben Gurion University of the Negev. Over his distinguished career, Nelson has authored or edited 36 books and published over 400 essays, focusing on modern poetry, critical theory, the politics of higher education, and issues related to antisemitism and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. From 2006 to 2012, he served as president of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP), advocating for academic freedom and shared governance. Nelson's latest work, “Mindless: What Happened to Universities?”, published on March 6, 2025, examines how universities have deviated from their commitment to shared intellectual principles, leading to environments where extremism and intolerance can flourish. "From the Frontlines" is an ADL podcast which brings listeners to the frontline in the battle against antisemitism and hate. A major frontline in this battle is the effort to dismantle the Jewish state and end the right to Jewish national self-determination through boycotts, divestment campaigns and sanctions - better known as the BDS movement. Some defend it as simply a nonviolent form of protest. The questions we will discuss on today's show is what this movement is, why is it so bad, and how we are combatting it. To help us answer these questions, two members of the staff of JLens joined the show. JLens offers a Jewish lens through which to invest, which includes encouraging companies to expand their economic ties to Israel. Nearly two years ago, ADL acquired JLens in order to place greater emphasis on fighting hate in the corporate boardroom. Dani Nurick, JLens Director of Advocacy, and Allison Marrill, JLens Director of Research were the guests on this podcast. For the show's 150th episode Parvez & Omar are joined by the second guest ever to appear on the podcast, Zahra Billoo , Civil rights Attorney and Executive Director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations San Francisco Bay Area (CAIR-SFBA). Zahra brings her years of tireless Civil Rights work and activism to bear as she discusses the recent protests and encampments taking place across college campuses placing them within the broader Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement and discussing their overall goals and objectives. The conversation also tackles the criticisms that such protests and encampments have garnered from voices outside of and within the Muslim community, as well as certain initiatives and organizations that some argue seek to normalize relations with the State of Israel and Zionism. About Zahra Billoo Zahra Billoo serves as the Executive Director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, San Francisco Bay Area (CAIR-SFBA) office, the oldest CAIR chapter office. Since joining in 2009, Zahra has led the organization through a period of six-fold growth. Today, she manages one of the largest CAIR offices in the country with a team of civil rights and social justice advocates dedicated to the empowerment of American Muslims through legal services, legislative advocacy, and community organizing. Under Zahra's leadership, CAIR-SFBA has filed lawsuits against the United States Department of Justice, Abercrombie & Fitch, and Southwest Airlines, representing American Muslims facing discriminatory treatment. CAIR-SFBA has also significantly expanded its capabilities to provide know-your-rights sessions on a nearly weekly basis to mosques and community members in the San Francisco Bay Area, while also providing direct legal representation to Bay Area residents facing numerous civil rights violations, including FBI interviews, employment discrimination, airport harassment, school bullying, and hate crimes. Zahra's advocacy has included media appearances in local and national media, including MSNBC, NPR, the San Francisco Chronicle, and even FOX News. Among her awards, she received the 2017 Human Rights Award from the Society of American Law Teachers and the 2018 Community Builder Award from People Acting in Community Together (PACT). She was also listed by the San Jose Mercury News as a “Woman to Watch” in March 2017 for Women's History Month, as well as by the Chronicle of Philanthropy in their January 2018 cover story on millennials who lead. She is currently a fellow with Levi Strauss Foundation Pioneers in Justice, a senior fellow with the American Leadership Forum's Silicon Valley Chapter and an alumna of Rockwood's Fellowship for a New California, LeaderSpring's Executive Directors Fellowship, and USC's American Muslim Civil Leadership Institute. Dear friends & comrades,Welcome back to the Radio Reversal podcast! Happy Sunday, and Eid Mubarak to those of you celebrating this week. We are very excited to be releasing Episode 7 of our current podcast series, following the Justice for Palestine movement here in so-called brisbane, and working to understand the political and moral imperatives of this moment. This series is a small labour of love and solidarity dedicated to everyone who is contending with the relentless violence of colonial racial states: from the Palestinians in Gaza and worldwide who are grieving for their loved ones and for their lands, to West Papuans struggling against Indonesian occupation, to First Nations peoples across the world fighting against ever-changing forms of settler colonial violence and dispossession. In this series, we are working to honour the commitment of everyday people struggling here on the ground, as well as learning from the long-standing and sustained struggle of Palestinian people across the world in their ongoing fight for their homelands. One of the things that comes up consistently across this series is the recognition that struggles against oppression and colonisation must be fought everywhere at once. If you've been listening to the past few episodes of this podcast, you'll know that this is what we've been tracing for the past few episodes. We've been following both long-standing and emergent solidarities: between people struggling against colonialism and racism globally, between people fighting systems of incarceration and surveillance, between people experiencing the brutality of oppression and subjugation in diverse forms. In this episode, we begin to turn to the everyday work of liberation, and the ongoing struggle to build modes of resistance that can disrupt systems of oppression wherever they take root. We begin in this episode with the Palestinian-led movement that uses strategies of Boycott, Divestment & Sanctions to build global support for Palestine. In broad terms: Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) is a Palestinian-led movement for freedom, justice and equality. BDS upholds the simple principle that Palestinians are entitled to the same rights as the rest of humanity.Israel is occupying and colonising Palestinian land, discriminating against Palestinian citizens of Israel and denying Palestinian refugees the right to return to their homes. Inspired by the South African anti-apartheid movement, the BDS call urges action to pressure Israel to comply with international law.BDS is now a vibrant global movement made up of unions, academic associations, churches and grassroots movements across the world. Since its launch in 2005, BDS is having a major impact and is effectively challenging international support for Israeli apartheid and settler-colonialism.This episode is timed to coincide with a major upsurge in global BDS organising. As many of you likely already know, April 15th has been called as a date for a global economic blockade of Israel, including a call for workers across the world to strike from their jobs and participate in direct action to disrupt business as usual for companies complicit in and benefiting from the genocide in Palestine. Here in so-called brisbane, organisers from Shut Down Ferra have called for a half-day blockade of Ferra Engineering in Tingalpa, kicking off bright and early at 5am. You can find more details of that event here and here. In this episode, Roshan digs into the archive to pull out some older conversations about using strategies of Boycott, Divestment & Sanctions here in so-called brisbane, as well as field recordings from Justice for Palestine events over the past decade. You'll hear a lot in this episode from Justice for Palestine organiser Phil Monsour, who has been one of the architects of the BDS movement here in so-called brisbane. You'll also hear some older interviews from the Radio Reversal crew, including the Anna's (Cerreto & Carlson) speaking with the indomitable Palestinian organiser, writer and theorist Jeanine Hourani in 2021. You'll also hear field recordings from the more recent Radio Reversal archive, including discussions of the Boycott, Divestment & Sanctions strategy at community meetings and rallies. We've also borrowed some archival material for this episode from the Brisbane BDS YouTube page. You can find the videos of earlier Justice for Palestine events and BDS actions here: https://m.youtube.com/user/BrisbaneBDSIf you want to dig deeper into the material you've heard in this episode, we recommend checking out Jeanine & her sibling Hasib's article for Overland, which is referenced in our 2021 interview: https://overland.org.au/2021/06/the-politics-and-solidarity-of-food/ You can find lots of detail about the origin and goals of the BDS movement and how it supports the struggle for Palestinian liberation by heading over to the BDS Movement website, the BDS Australia website, and the Australian Palestine Advocacy Network. There's also some helpful explainers in the following news reports from Al-Jazeera in 2018: As always, another jam-packed episode of the Justice for Palestine Magan-djin podcast. A reminder, as usual, that the primary purpose of this podcast is to encourage listeners to get actively involved in the movement for Palestinian liberation, in whatever ways you can. If you'd like to get in touch with us to talk about ways you might be able to support the work of Justice for Palestine Magan-djin, Shut Down Ferra, Queensland Muslim Incorporated and other affiliated groups, please don't hesitate to get in touch. We strongly recommend that you sign up to the Justice for Palestine Magandjin mailing list, if you haven't already, to make sure that you always hear about upcoming events. And if you have any questions, criticisms, or reflections on this episode or the podcast so far, please let us know. Yours in solidarity,Anna (for the Radio Reversal collective) This is a public episode. Join leading Palestine solidarity activists for a discussion of the role of BDS in solidarity with Palestine. Israel's attack on the 2.3 million Palestinians in the occupied and besieged Gaza Strip has been described by genocide scholars, international law experts and UN officials as “a textbook case of genocide.” Israel's bombardment of Gaza has killed thousands, including over 3,500 children, and destroyed entire neighborhoods, leaving over one million Palestinians displaced. In parallel, Palestinians are being dehumanized and Palestine solidarity is being targeted internationally. It is crucial for all people of conscience to find practical ways to struggle against the root causes of the violence: oppression and injustice. Launched in 2005, the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement is backed by Palestinian grassroots movements, unions, and political parties. BDS calls for an end to international state, corporate and institutional complicity in Israel's regime of oppression so that Palestinians can enjoy their rights. The BDS movement is inspired by the South African anti-apartheid struggle and the US Civil Rights movement, rooted in a century-old heritage of Palestinian popular resistance to settler colonialism and apartheid. BDS has taken the forms of worker strikes, mass demonstrations, public diplomacy, art, and education. As we protest ongoing Israeli war crimes, we must also act to end our own government's complicity in Israeli apartheid. BDS provides the means to exert meaningful material pressure on state and private actors complicit in Israel's violence. While the BDS (Boycott Divestment Sanctions) movement portrays itself as a grassroots campaign using legal means to combat alleged Israeli crimes, at its core, the movement is radically different. In addition to spreading anti-Israel disinformation, BDS campaigners also frequently use tools of discrimination in their attempt to demonize the Jewish State. While these efforts can take place anywhere, college and university campuses, as well as inside the halls of government, are frequent targets for this battleground aimed at delegitimizing Israel. In the face of these campaigns, many pro-Israel efforts have been launched in response, including the use of legal means. Barghouti discusses the hypocrisy in the West's response to Russia and its response to  Israel's decades-long occupation of Palestinian land and says the racism of the West is on full display. Russia should be sanctioned for its agression,  but boycotting individuals for their identity or political beliefs is not something the BDS movement supports. Join America's Roundtable Radio co-hosts Natasha Srdoc and Joel Anand Samy in a recent conversation with Arizona's State Treasurer Kimberly Yee focusing on her leadership role in countering the dangerous anti-Israel BDS (Boycott, Sanctions, and Divestment) movement. The conversation highlights the rise of anti-Semitism and how principled leaders across America are calling for principled actions against the BDS movement—a hateful campaign designed to delegitimize Israel and Jewish communities in America and around the world. Arizona State Treasurer Kimberly Yee put investment firm Morningstar on notice and stated that it violated the state's anti-BDS law. The Jewish Insider | Morningstar ESG rating system violates Arizona anti-BDS law, treasurer says (https://jewishinsider.com/2022/08/arizona-kimberly-lee-morningstar-esg-sustainalytics/) “As Treasurer, it is my duty to ensure that Arizona does not do business with companies that are attempting to undermine Israel's economy and violate Arizona's anti-BDS law,” said Arizona Treasurer Kimberly Yee. “Morningstar's ESG rating subsidiary, Sustainalytics, appears to violate Arizona law by negatively impacting ratings of companies doing business in Israel. I continue to strongly oppose the use of woke ESG ratings in order to keep politics out of Arizonan's livelihoods and retirement accounts.” In Treasurer Yee's letter to Kunal Kapoor, CEO of Morningstar Inc., she informed Kapoor that the company had 30 days within receipt of her letter sent on August 18, 2022, to provide written certification explaining how Morningstar's usage of ESG ratings does not violate Arizona's anti-BDS law. Further, Treasurer Yee required that Morningstar must provide a written averment that they will not engage in any future boycott activities against Israel. “As Arizona's Chief Banking and Investment Officer, I stand with Israel, and I will not allow taxpayer dollars to become victim to the woke political gamesmanship of ESG ratings. ESG ratings are a political scorecard, not a financial scorecard,” said Arizona Treasurer Kimberly Yee. “I will not allow companies to promote policies that are antisemitic and discriminatory efforts against Israel, which is America's longtime friend and ally, and a significant trade partner with Arizona.” Treasurer Kimberly and Arizona's state government have stood in support of Israel's sovereignty and thwarted efforts of American companies working to boycott Israel. Last year in September 2021, Treasurer Yee withdrew $143 million of Arizona's public funds from Unilever, the parent company of Ben and Jerry's over the ice cream firm's decision to cease sales in Judea and Samaria also known as the West Bank, and east Jerusalem. A published report stated (https://www.foxbusiness.com/politics/arizonas-state-treasurer-divests-funds-ben-jerrys-anti-semitic-boycott-israel) — "Arizona will not do business with companies that are attempting to undermine Israel's economy and blatantly disregarding Arizona's law," said Treasurer Kimberly Yee. She is Arizona's chief banking and investment officer and oversees the cash management of Arizona's $53 billion state budget and payments to agencies, local governments and schools. Upon taking office in January 2019, assets under management were at $15.4 billion. Today, assets under management stand at over $30.2 billion, an increase of 96 percent in 42 months. The Arizona Permanent Land Endowment Trust Fund has also hit historic record highs increasing by $1.9 billion in value under Treasurer Yee's administration as of June 30, 2022. Voluntary deposits into the Local Government Investment Pool have also increased by 75.4 percent under Treasurer Yee's leadership, reaching a balance of $5.54 billion in total assets as of June 30, 2022. Treasurer Yee led the effort to pass a state law requiring students to have financial education in high school before graduation, and was the first State Treasurer to have visited all 15 counties in Arizona during the first year of her administration. In this week's podcast, we sit down with Aviva Klompas, for her insights and perspectives. Did you know that the modern "BDS" Movement was actually born in Durban, South Africa? Today's podcast traces the infamous steps of BDS.Apartheid was a system of institutionalized racial segregation that existed in South Africa from 1948 until the early 1990s. In September of 2001, a Human Rights Conference in Durban South Africa named Israel an apartheid state and thus launched today's antisemitic BDS movement.PJTN did a meeting series in South Africa several years ago and traced the infamous trail of BDS. Our mission included a screening of our documentary film about the BDS movement titled "Boycott This." Following the screening, we had a panel discussion with distinguished guests who are experts in their fields. Our discussion centered on our biblical responsibility to stand with Israel and the Jewish people against the rise of antisemitism, specifically as it pertains to the BDS movement. The information we gathered on this panel is priceless as you'll discover on this week's podcast!

Chris Mitchell, CBN News' Middle East Bureau Chief joins America's Roundtable co-hosts Natasha Srdoc and Joel Anand Samy in a timely conversation on the current state of US-Israel relations, and the Iran threat targeting Israel, the region and US interests. Chris Mitchell in his international broadcast piece and online platform states: “The war of words between Israel and Iran is intensifying. The rhetoric comes at a time when the nuclear talks in Vienna to stop Iran's nuclear program seem stalled. When Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz met with US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin last week, he reportedly presented a timeline for an Israeli attack on Iran's nuclear program and told Lloyd that Israel is “preparing for the Iranian challenge at the operational level.” The discussion also brings to the forefront the waning support of American support for Israel, including the dramatic decline of Evangelical youth and America's center-left for the Jewish state's sovereignty. The greater concerns of the BDS movement targeting Israel remains a growing concern adversely impacting Arab and Jewish families working in companies located in Judea and Samaria, also known as the West Bank. In light of the challenges faced by the inhabitants of the Middle East, America's Roundtable co-hosts Natasha Srdoc and Joel Anand Samy review the accomplishments of the Abraham Accords which were signed a year ago in Washington, DC and how Israel and Arab states are promoting people-to-people exchanges and advancing trade and investments. Floriana Pagano, Donncha O Cearbhaill During this session we will offer a short history of DDoS – from the Zapatistas' use of Floodnet and the “Netstrikes” and “Virtual Sit-Ins” at the turn of the millennium, to Anonymous' campaigns and political actions against Estonia, Georgia and Ukraine, up to more recent and disruptive episodes like the attacks against Krebs on Security and Dyn. A description of 3 case studies reported by Deflect Labs in 2016 – targeting an independent news site in Ukraine, the website of the Palestinian global campaign BDS Movement and the official website of Black Lives Matter – will illustrate how DDoS is being used by governments, local authorities and hacker crews alike to censor critical voices online. Beyond the hype generated by Mirai and other software for managing botnets, launching a DDoS attack is becoming easier and cheaper by the day, and the risk of a “democratization of online censorship”, as Brian Krebs has called it, is growing. Even if websites of independent media and civil society organizations can be protected by free DDoS mitigation infrastructures like Deflect.ca, the protection measures these services can offer have their limits, and it's important to explore solutions based on community action. This session will aim at starting a conversation with groups that are particularly vulnerable to DDoS attacks, to find common ground in solidarity against the threat of DDoS-based censorship. How big are the risks? What are our needs before, during and after the attacks? How can we defend ourselves and band together to do so more effectively? During the second part of the session the public will be invited to share their experiences of DDoS attacks, those at risk of attack to discuss their needs, and those in a position to help to consider how we can collaborate. The purpose of this session is to gather information on our community's needs and capabilities and to start developing standards for threat-intelligence sharing among peers and participants of re:publica.
