Israel's invasion of Lebanon with Omar Hassan   After a year of genocidal war in Gaza, Israel has now begun a ground invasion of Lebanon. In less than a week Israel has killed over 2000 people in Lebanon through massive bombardment of civilians in the capital of Beirut and a renewed offensive against the already devastated South. Israeli aggression and repeated military strikes on Yemen, Iraq, Syria and Iran have led the Middle East to the brink of all-out regional war.    This episode Chloe spoke to Omar Hassan, a Lebanese-Australian socialist and editor of the Marxist Left Review about the invasion of Lebanon, the threat of regional war and the history of Israeli aggression.    Omar touched on the role Israel has played as attack dog for US imperialism from the Suez Crisis invasion of Egypt in 1956 to the 18 year long Israeli occupation of Southern Lebanon from 1982 to 2000.    This week the Australian Government, the NSW Police and the capitalist media have engaged in a massive smear campaign against the pro-Palestine anti-war movement. The NSW police unsuccessfully attempted to ban the rallies commemorating the 1 year anniversary of the genocide. Omar spoke about the hypocrisy and cynicism of the media as well as the role of Labor in supporting Israeli aggression and US imperialism.   Further reading:   https://redflag.org.au/article/by-attacking-lebanon-israel-seeks-to-expand-its-genocidal-war https://redflag.org.au/article/israels-history-of-aggression-against-lebanon   Get involved with Victorian Socialists   https://victoriansocialists.org.au/candidates/omar-hassan

It's been just over a week since Australia went to the polls and returned a resounding 60% majority "No" vote against an Indigenous Voice to Parliament. What do socialists make of the result? Emma spoke to Red Flag Radio regular Jordan Humphreys, author of Indigenous Liberation and Socialism, about the significance of the defeat. Jordan explains how the "No" camp tapped into a well of anti-Aboriginal racism in this country. We discuss the tepid "Yes" campaign, and why Labor should be held accountable for its decades-long role in pushing racist ideas and policies. Jordan also offers some reflections on the fight for Indigenous rights going forward. Right now, Israel is mobilising for a full-scale war in response to an offensive by Hamas. Netanyahu has vowed to turn Gaza, with its population of 2.3 million people, into a deserted island, and Israeli politicians are openly calling for another Nakba — referring to the genocidal massacres in 1948 which marked the beginning of Israel's occupation of Palestine. Western politicians are lining up to pledge their support for Israel's “right to defend itself”. The US has sent an aircraft carrier to aid Israel, and Biden has taken this opportunity to rally support for Western imperialism & funding for the Israeli Defence Forces.  Chloe spoke to Omar Hassan about the history of military occupation and genocide from 1948 to today, and why the left must stand with Palestine. Omar is a socialist from Melbourne, a long-time Palestine solidarity activist and editor of the Marxist Left Review.     Join the solidarity protests: Sydney Sunday Oct 15, 1PM Hyde Park https://facebook.com/events/s/stop-the-war-on-gaza-free-pale/237050879370266/ Melbourne Sunday Oct 15, 12PM State Library https://facebook.com/events/s/palestine-rally-end-the-siege-/621858313442265/ Canberra Friday Oct 13, 5:30PM Garema Place https://facebook.com/events/s/stand-with-palestine-no-war-on/2258919267638772/ Adelaide Sunday Oct 15, 2:00pm SA Parliament House https://facebook.com/events/s/solidarity-with-palestine-no-w/7143090389076667/ Brisbane Friday Oct 13, 6:00pm King George Square https://facebook.com/events/s/no-war-on-gaza-solidarity-with/884972343033190/ Perth Friday Oct 13, 5:30pm Murray St Mall https://facebook.com/events/s/rally-for-palestine-no-war-on-/1046067476425215/ Wollongong Sat Oct 14, 1:00pm MacCabe Park https://facebook.com/events/s/wollongong-rally-free-palestin/1951351455251789/ Further readings: Check out the War on Palestine section of the Red Flag website: https://redflag.org.au/category/palestine

A conversation about Palestine, socialism, and anti-imperialist solidarity, marking the release of Palestine: A Socialist Introduction. Join Sumaya Awad, brian bean, Khury Petersen-Smith, and Jehad Abusalim for a timely discussion about Palestine, socialism, and anti-imperialist solidarity across borders, marking the release of Palestine: A Socialist Introduction. Winning freedom in Palestine necessitates contending with the forces of capitalism, just as the struggle for socialism will have to take on US imperialism. A broadening movement of workers and activists see the injustices they oppose as common expressions of a cruel and irrational system—capitalism, and understand the need to posit a humane alternative: socialism. At the same time, the centrality of the Palestinian liberation struggle is becoming more and more apparent to leftists who see the relationship between liberation within the US and beyond its borders. As the US socialist movement continues to grow, it is critical that it embraces anti-imperialism, and the cause of Palestinian liberation in particular. Just as significantly, it is crucial that the growing Palestine movement orients toward socialist politics, as the only plausible means to achieve justice regionally and internationally. Sumaya Awad and brian bean, editors of Palestine: A Socialist Introduction, will be joined for a discussion about these themes by contributors Khury Petersen-Smith and Jehad Abusalim. Palestine: A Socialist Introduction systematically tackles a number of important aspects of the Palestinian struggle for liberation, contextualizing it in an increasingly polarized world and offering a socialist perspective on how full liberation can be won. Contributors include: Jehad Abusalim, Shireen Akram-Boshar, Omar Barghouti, Nada Elia, Toufic Haddad, Omar Hassan, Remi Kanazi, Annie Levin, Mostafa Omar, Khury Petersen-Smith, and Daphna Thier. ---------------------------------------------------- Sumaya Awad is a Palestinian writer, analyst, and socialist organizer based in New York City. Her writings focus on Palestinian liberation, anti-imperialism, Islamophobia, and immigration, and have been featured in the Feminist Wire, In These Times, Open City, the Middle East Solidarity magazine, and Slate, among others. She is co-editor of Palestine: A Socialist Introduction. brian bean is a Chicago-based socialist activist, writer, and speaker originally from North Carolina. He is one of the founding editors of Rampant magazine. His work has been published in Jacobin, Socialist Worker, Red Flag, International Viewpoint, Bel Ahmar بالأحمر) ) and other publications. He is co-editor of Palestine: A Socialist Introduction. Khury Petersen-Smith researches, writes, and organizes about US empire, Palestine, solidarity, and resistance. He is the Michael Ratner Middle East Fellow at the Institute for Policy Studies in Washington, DC. He is a cofounder of Black 4 Palestine, an organization of Black people in the US building solidarity with the Palestinian freedom struggle. Jehad Abusalim is a PhD candidate in the History and Hebrew and Judaic Studies joint program at New York University. He studies Arab intellectual writings on Zionism from the first half of the twentieth century. He earned his bachelor's degree in business administration and Hebrew from Al-Azhar University in Gaza. In this episode of OutRight TV, Arabic Media Coordinator Nazeeha Saeed speaks to Omar Hassan. Omar is a transgender male who left Egypt in 2010 to seek asylum in the US. Omar talks about coming to terms with his identity, his first love, and navigating discrimination - even from his own family.

Between Us & Y’all: Conversations between a Mama & her young adult son.

As we take steps to return to our normal posting schedule, in lieu of a traditional episode, we are offering a special dedication to Nafees, our cohost, his sister Yasmine and every single one of our listeners who have lost a parent. Nafees & Yasmine lost their father Omar Hassan last month. This was a tremendous loss not only for Nafees, but to Omar’s entire family, his friends, and community who remain behind. We pray that God has mercy on Omar’s soul, that he is granted paradise, and that his memory lives on forever. Ameen. We’ve given this dedication a special title, “Five before Five.” That comes from a hadith that reads, “Take benefit of five before five: Your youth before your old age, your health before your sickness, your wealth before your poverty, your free time before you are preoccupied, and your life before your death” *For our listeners who aren't’ familiar with hadiths, they are collections of traditions containing sayings of the prophet Muhammad (Peace & blessings be upon him) with accounts of his daily practice, or his sunnah. I asked a few close friends and family to share with our listeners advice including any ways their view on this hadith may or may not have changed for them in their process of healing after losing a parent. I hope these words serve as a gift towards healing and are received with love. It is so very important that we make space in our conversations after this type of loss. Even if it is a simple check-in daily or every other week to check on each other, doing so can do wonders to assist in healing our hearts. It is a form of therapy that we all deserve, and I pray that we receive this type of support. Ameen.
