Leadership is evolving. It's no longer about power, control, or having all the answers.True leadership lives in presence—in the ability to hold space when things get messy, to stay open in the face of conflict, and to invite something deeper to emerge. It's the art of feeling the room, sensing what's needed beyond strategy or words, and guiding energy with clarity and care. It's seeing the highest in others—and calling it forward. In this episode, I'm joined by Sumaya for a rich, heartfelt conversation on Embodied Leadership—and why nervous system resilience, somatic awareness, and being anchored in the body are the foundation of trustable, powerful leadership.Below are the links where you can learn more about the work Sumaya does in the world.Website: https://www.presentmomentmedia.orgFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/sumaya.k.owensInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/_present_moment_media_/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/sumaya-k-owens/

The Connected Yoga Teacher Podcast 378: Embodied Leadership with Sumaya K. Owens Description: Being a leader is challenging. From making tough decisions to guiding others, it demands a lot from us and it can be difficult to make the right choices. As yoga teachers, how can we ethically show up as leaders while also being aware of our own power and privilege? Sumaya K. Owens shares their insights. Sumaya K. Owens is the founder of Present Moment Media where they help uplift the voices of changemakers by using content marketing as a tool for social & cultural impact. Sumaya has nearly 20 years of professional experience in the health and wellness field and is a trauma-informed yoga teacher and ayurvedic health coach. They currently teach weekly virtual yoga classes for Burmese students living in a military coup in Bago, Myanmar, as well as offer workshops, trainings, and retreats on mindfulness, stress management, and trauma-informed practices for business and nonprofit leaders. Sumaya also talks about how to show up for hard conversations and how to balance speaking up for causes we care about while being mindful of the impact we have on our followers and students. Quotes from this episode: "Embodied leadership is the practice of turning your attention towards the physical body and sensations while in a position of power or privilege." "As a leader, I am in a position of power. I am in a position of privilege and it is my responsibility to be incredibly aware of how I'm using that for the benefit of others." "Every yoga teacher is a leader. ... The whole context of being a teacher means that your students are looking to you for guidance, they're looking to you for support, and that puts you in a position of power." "As embodied leaders, it's also a responsibility to show up in the community and be calm and compassionate and caring, human beings who take care of each other and know how to have hard conversations without lashing out at each other, without blaming each other." "What feels really important to me is that as yoga teachers and as leaders that we have values and that we know what they are and that we stand up for what we believe in and especially if it's something that's really aligned with our brand or our organization, our vision for the business or nonprofit that we run." "One of the best things that we can do as leaders is know when we don't have all the answers and ask for help because that means we'll be more effective in the work that we're doing."

Revolutions Per Minute - Radio from the New York City Democratic Socialists of America
Regular listeners of Revolutions per Minute will be familiar with our coverage of Palestine solidarity work within the Democratic Socialists of America. We recognize that the struggle for Palestinian liberation and the violence of settler colonial displacement are both ongoing. Tonight, our coverage continues with a live conversation with Sumaya and Daphna, two NYC-DSA members and organizers with deep experience in Palestine solidarity work. We discuss this month's outbreak of violence in Palestine and Israel, which has led to the genocidal and illegal bombardment of Gaza happening as we speak. Socialists in New York and across the country have joined forces with the multi-cultural, international movement for Palestine solidarity, with hundreds of thousands flooding the streets of major cities, conducting civil disobedience, and calling on the country's leadership to end United States support for Israel and a ceasefire now. Sumaya Abdel Qader è nata a Perugia 45 anni fa. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/rame-platform/message

Dr. Sonia Ocaña Ruiz illuminates New Spain at the continental crossroads of colonialism, Catholicism, and Japanese culture from the 16th century, through a Mexican Enconchado of the Virgin of Guadalupe. Mexico City was beating heart of the Spanish Empire in the 16th century, connecting the continents of Asia and the Americas. Exclusively produced in 'New Spain', mother-of-pearl paintings, or enconchados, embody the artistic and religious standards imposed by imperial Europe. But their shimmering façades also reveal how cross-continental flows of goods and peoples informed a uniquely New Spanish cultural identity - perhaps none more so than Japanese lacquers. Few enconchados still survive today. This vision of the Virgin of Guadalupe is a rare final testament to how Mexican and Asian artists received and resisted European cultural hegemony, and how colonial territories were often more cosmopolitan than their imperial cores. PRESENTER: Dr. Sonia Ocaña Ruiz, professor of history at Universidad Juárez Autónoma de Tabasco. She is a member of Japón y España: Relaciones a Través del Arte. ART: Mexican Enconchado of the Virgin of Guadalupe (c. 1700s). IMAGE: ‘The Virgin of Guadalupe'. SOUNDS: Manuel de Sumaya. PRODUCER: Jelena Sofronijevic. When war broke out in Yemen, Murad Subay began painting murals on the shelled and bullet-marked buildings of his home city of Sana'a. His colourful messages of protest and hope raised awareness of the conflict's impact on Yemeni civilians. He encouraged passers by to join him as he worked, and together they filled ruined homes with images of peace. Journalist Sumaya Bakhsh traces Murad's journey as he leaves Sana'a for Cairo. International travel is rarely simple for citizens of Yemen, and we hear from Murad as he languishes in Egypt, stuck without a visa and unable to create new work. Murad is used to living and working in the toughest of conditions, but this period of inactivity is a new test for the prolific artist. Eventually Murad receives a visa and arrives in the UK to launch a new campaign. Painting with Murad on the streets of London, Sumaya digs into his process as Murad explains why ultimately he must return to the conflict in Yemen, armed only with his brushes and spray cans.
