That Does Suit Madame, a Podcast about "Are You Being Served?"
The final episode of Season 1 of AYBSA/Grace & Favour! (But we still have Season 2 to go). We had an unauthorized travel expense from official Research Unpaid Intern J.J. (but he sends us a report from LONDON anyway). An AYBS tattoo in “The Theatre of the Mind”!? Superfan Patrick suggests that Mollie Sugden as Mrs. Slocombe sounded snooty in the original series but not as much in AYBS-Again. Why? Mr. Jeff sings! Wayne's World and Cops on 90's TV. The gayest moment on the podcast ever! “A trice” - Professor Jeff explains that refers to an old fashioned type of pully. “In a trice” = “in a jiffy”. Mrs. Slocombe reconciders delivering the breakfast tray to handsy Mr. Webster in a throw-back joke. Mr. Conklyn wants Mr. Humphry's help in the bath. The Americans don't have vitality, personality, or youth. “One For My Baby” sung by Bette Midler as the final act for Johnny Carson's “The Tonight Show” on American TV. “Sausage” = “sausage and mash” = Cockney rhyming slang = “cash”. Mr. Humphries milks Bessie the milk cow. Where is the Valley of the Queens?! Tiddles is a cougar, apparently. Harrods delivers to Northern Mississippi! The staff create a church service with Slocombe pumping the organ (and the blacksmith). The dentures are missing! The “Benny Hill” song played during PM Boris Johnson's resignation speech. Mavis is willing for a shilling?! The Harvest Dance! Mavis is the “caller” just like in American Square Dancing (which might have been evolved from Somerset Harvest Dances in England?) Capt. Peacock plays an apple tree from “The Wizard of Oz”. The “Somerset” farmer costumes in “Roots” look the same as in the Harvest Dance in this episode! A call back from “German Week” with Slocombe slapping Peacock! Next podcast: Season 2 of “Are You Being Served Again” / “Grace & Favour”. For our second dive into the Ocean's Eleven: 12 Degrees of Frank Sinatra season, Stacie has the Rat Pack-adjacent comedian and original King of Late Night, Johnny Carson. He was a private person who was possibly America's most beloved and public figure for three decades. His three divorces – and final, apparently happy marriage, reveal the split-screen that was his life. Then, Alicia has the tragic early years of Ava Gardner: her rural North Carolina upbringing, her discovery by the MGM star machine, and her first marriages, to Mickey Rooney and Artie Shaw. It's all prelude to her final, tumultuous marriage to Sinatra, which is coming up later this season. Can't get enough #trashcandy? In Episode 26, we return to the world of Blade Runner for the 1982 film’s long-belated sequel. Directed by Denis Villeneuve, and with a soundtrack by Benjamin Wallfisch and Hans Zimmer, Blade Runner 2049 has a different sound and a different set of thematic ideas. But how does the music work, and what is all this interlinked stuff about, anyway? To help us answer those questions – and more – we’re once again joined by the brilliant synth expert Seja Vogel (whose fantastic podcast, where she interviews musicians, you should check out here: http://sejamusic.com). "Who in God's eyes was the better man? The penitent publican, or the smug, hypocritical, flamboyant Pharisee? Hmm. Earlier this series we said no to vain janglings. Ably assisted by Moses, Joshua examines what he used to consider worth singing and repents of his crimes against God's holy earholes. Featuring "Jack The Ripper", "Booze In The Mornin'", Moses delivers the homilie, crooned to the tune of "One For My Baby" and Joshua pleads "Guilty" to all charges. We wrap the series with "Ave Yahweh (I'm Comin' Home"). Dedicated to Gordon Murphy.

Another WEEKEND PROJECT instalment: easy listening cool music
The post ‘One for My Baby’ by Anton Szandor LaVey appeared first on Reverend Campbell.
Our guest this month is film critic and historian Imogen Sara Smith. We start by discussing her background as a film writer and how she started writing about noir in particular (1:40). Then we discuss her commentary track for the new DVD/Blu-ray release of The Scar (aka Hollow Triumph), including the central role of star/producer/director Paul Henreid (5:30), the movie's theme of people not noticing things right in front of them and how that relates to film noir in general (10:25), the great cinematography by John Alton and expressionism in noir (13:40), and one quote from the movie that sums up film noir all in one phrase (18:35). Then we discuss Imogen's NOIR CITY e-magazine article "Wanted Man: The Fugitive" from the Fall 2016 issue about noir transitioning to TV in the 1960s: how The Fugitive exemplified themes and style common to film noir (20:20), older TV shows not being designed for binge-watching (28:50), and the influence of the show's creator Roy Huggins in designing TV concepts that sustain suspense and interest from one episode to the next (31:05). Next up is Imogen's article "A Light In The Dark: Ella Raines and Film Noir's Working Girls" from the Fall 2015 issue of NOIR CITY. We talk about the background and career of 1940s leading lady Ella Raines (35:40) and how she epitomized the working girl character that briefly flourished in film noir, a positive companion to the more widely known femme fatale character (40:00). Then we play a game of hypotheticals: Raines was discovered and groomed by Howard Hawks, but she never appeared in any movies he directed, so which "Hawksian women" would have been good parts for her? (45:35) We also talk about Imogen's book "In Lonely Places: Film Noir Beyond The City." We discuss its overall theme of classic noir films taking place in settings outside cities, and how that reflected post-war trends in the US (56:15), plus just what is it that makes film noir so interesting: we all love the style and the iconography, but there's way more to it that keeps us coming back to these movies that still resonate today (59:55). We conclude with the film series that Imogen programmed in connection with her book (1:08:00). NOIR CITY Austin takes place from Friday May 19 through Sunday May 21 at Austin's Alamo Drafthouse Ritz, with FNF founder and president Eddie Muller introducing the movies.
