Suffering in mink takes a human turn as Charlotte Vale (Bette Davis), the unwillingly sheltered adult child of Boston society matron Mrs. Henry Vale (played with iron menace by Gladys Cooper) embarks on a quest to establish a confident independence. Or is it an independent confidence? Aided by the wise and kindly Dr. Jaquith (Claude Rains) following a nervous breakdown, Charlotte has only to overcome her sense of obligation to the world and define her own happiness. Was there ever a more favorable portrayal of therapy? If so, this must predate them all–and it is all the more remarkable for the chauffeur-and-chandelier backdrop of its inhabitants.   Dave and Jeremy marvel at this lost world of fictional high society, and at how easily Bette Davis conveys the inner journey of a character who transcends that world, transformed by her willingness to “be interested in everything,” as Dr. Jacquith instructs her, while at the same time learning to say no when it counts. Could any other actress nail scene after scene with as much self-possession as Davis does when Charlotte resists pressure to return to her old, unhappy life? The love interest here is played by Paul Henreid, gentle instigator of our hero's romantic agency, whose own self-determining arc mirrors Charlotte's just enough to put her nuanced star turn in brilliant relief. Join Dave and Jeremy for a celebration of a late-blooming camellia in this episode where we set sail with Warner Brothers' 1942 production of NOW, VOYAGER. Thank you for listening! There have been many classic films turned into TV shows with less-than-stellar results. Does anyone remember the “Casablanca" TV show on ABC with Starsky & Hutch star DAVID SOUL filling in for HUMPHREY BOGART? Don't worry, nobody else does either! This week, it's the start of a beautiful friendship, as of all the gin joints in all the world, this movie had to walk into ours... Yes, Hayley is finally pulling one of the all-time greats down off the shelf as we watch 1942's Casablanca, directed by Richard Curtiz, and starring Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, Paul Henreid, Claude Rains, Conrad Veidt, Sydney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre and Dooley Wilson. Widely regarded as one of the most beloved films of all time, it will come as absolutely no surprise that we both adored it. A tragic romance set against a surprisingly timely morality play making big swinging statements on the Nazis and fascism as the war was still happening. It's great! If you'd like to watch the film before listening along to our discussion, and in the case of a movie like this we do recommend you do, Casablanca is currently streaming in Canada on Crave and Starz at the time of publication. The full Roger Ebert 50th anniversary essay: https://www.rogerebert.com/roger-ebert/as-time-goes-by-its-the-still-the-same-old-glorious-casablanca Other works referenced in this episode include The Fall Guy, Bad Boys, Bad Boys II, Hot Fuzz, Suze, Am I OK?, How To Be Single, Light Sleeper, The First Omen, Immaculate, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, Hot Rod, BlackBerry, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One, The Hunt For Red October, Notorious, Amsterdam, Mad Men, The Simpsons and countless more. We're back next Friday to continue our run of five-star classics, with David Fincher's magnum opus: 2007's Zodiac, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Mark Ruffalo and Robert Downey Jr., which is currently streaming on Paramount+ in Canada and presumably in the US as well. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

In 1941, Warner Brothers story editor Irene Diamond was in New York when she discovered the script to an un-produced play called Everybody Comes to Rick's. She convinced Hal Wallis to buy the rights to the script in January of 1942 for twenty-thousand dollars. The project was renamed Casablanca. Humphrey Bogart was cast as Rick Blaine, an expatriate nightclub owner hiding from a suspicious past and negotiating a fine line among Nazis, the French underground, the Vichy prefect, and unresolved feelings for his ex-girlfriend. Ingrid Bergman was cast opposite Bogart with Claude Rains, Sydney Greenstreet, Paul Henreid, Peter Lorre, and Dooley Wilson in supporting roles. Michael Curtiz directed. Principal photography began on May 25th, 1942. The film was shot entirely at Warner Brothers Studios in Burbank, California, with the exception of one sequence at Van Nuys Airport in Los Angeles. As Ingrid Bergman mentioned in an interview with the CBC, no one involved with Casablanca's production expected it to be good. It was rushed to take advantage of the publicity from the Allied invasion of North Africa and had its world premiere on November 26th, 1942, in New York City. It was nationally released on January 23rd, 1943. But Casablanca quickly became iconic. Many exiled and cause-sympathetic film actors appeared in cameos, including Helmut Dantine, Dan Seymour, Madeleine Lebeau, Frank Puglia, Jack Benny, Marcel Dalio, Leonid Kinskey, Torben Meyer, Ilka Grünig, Ludwig Stössel, and Wolfgang Zilzer. A witness to the filming of the "duel of the anthems" sequence said he saw many of the actors crying because they knew that they were all real-life refugees. The film was nominated for eight Oscars, including Bogart for best actor, and Casablanca won best picture, best direction, and best adapted screenplay at the 1943 Academy awards. On April 26th, 1943, six weeks after the awards, the Screen Guild Theater broadcast an adaptation of the film.

Comedian and actor Josh Fadem (Better Call Saul) joins to discuss the 1948 film noir HOLLOW TRIUMPH (aka THE SCAR) starring Paul Henreid and Joan Bennett. Credited to director Steve Sekely, but mostly directed by Henried himself, HOLLOW TRIUMPH follows John Müller, a criminal whose casino heist goes awry, forcing him into hiding. When mistaken for a local psychoanalyst, Müller assumes the doppelgänger doctor's identity, down to a prominent facial scar. But can Müller survive long with both the law and his underworld contacts closing in? Shot by pioneer noir cinematographer John Alcott, HOLLOW TRIUMPH is an all too underseen B-movie gem, showcasing Henreid's elegant authority as both actor and director. With noir aficionado Fadem to guide us, MNAM ventures deep into the shadows to examine this downbeat thriller along with diversions into Babylon, Top Gun: Maverick, Barbara Stanwyck, Douglas Sirk, Jules Dassin, Psycho, Mel Gibson, Humphrey Bogart, Dead Ringers, and much, much more! HOLLOW TRIUMPH is currently available to stream on Pluto TV, Tubi, or with subscription to Amazon Prime.

Ian and Don celebrate 80 years of Casablanca!Michael Curtiz's iconic romance drops audiences right into the middle of World War II, where a brooding loner named Rick (Humphrey Bogart) runs a cafe in the middle of the titular Moroccan city. Policed by the French, and on the verge of domination by German forces, Rick's Cafe Americain becomes a port for European refugees trying to make their way to America. When an old flame named Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman) re-enters his life, looking for safe passage with a revolutionary-on-the-run (Paul Henreid), Rick finds himself at the center of a conflict involving stolen papers of transit, vicious political machinery, and the remnants of a broken heart. In this affectionate and spoiler-filled conversation, Don explains why Casablanca is his absolute favorite film; Ian marvels at a movie he hasn't watched in nearly three decades; and both guys talk about why the film could not--and should never, ever, under any circumstances--be remade today!Casablanca will be available on 4K UHD Blu-ray from Warner Bros on November 8, 2022.Show Links:Watch the Casablanca trailer.Order Casablanca on 4K UHD Blu-ray.Continue your education with Don Shanahan at:Every Movie Has a LessonCinephile Hissy Fit Podcast25 Years LaterSubscribe to, like, and comment on the Kicking the Seat YouTube channel!

Historically Speaking-Uncommon History with an Unconventional Pair

What do John Ford, Moe Berg, Julia Child and Nelson Eddy have in common? They all stepped away from their respective careers during WWII and joined a newly formed organization called The Office of Strategic Services a.k.a. the OSS. In short, they were spies for a group that was the forerunner to both the CIA and the Army’s Special Forces. From Julia’s special recipe for shark repellent, to John Ford’s undercover training films for secret agents, to Moe’s training of Slavic-American recruits to go on parachute drops into Yugoslavia, and Nelson Eddy’s “singing tour” of the Middle East, these extraordinary individuals risked their lives and their careers to secretly serve their country during its time of crisis.  But for the OSS, would the Allies have even won the war?  It's certainly a question worth asking and a great reason to dig a little deeper into this secret organization that only officially existed during WWII.BooksOperatives, Spies, and Saboteurs: The Unknown Story of the Men and Women of World War II's OSS by Patrick K. Ein absoluter Klassiker zwischen Resistance und Nazis in einem Mikrokosmos, in dem die ganze Welt vertreten ist: Auf Markus‘ Wunsch hin sehen wir uns diesmal Michael Curtiz‘ „Casablanca“ an.

Erich Wolfgang Korngold composed his Concerto specifically for this movie. Eleanor Aller Slatkin was an accomplished musician who became the principal cellist for the Warner Bros. In 1958 she won a Grammy Award as a member of the Hollywood String Quartet which she co-founded with her husband, Felix Slatkin. Due to clever filming, many viewers of the film Deception erroneously believe that the Concerto was performed by Paul Henreid, who played the character of the cellist Karel Novak in the movie. "Play it once, Sam. For old time’s sake. Play it, Sam." Michael Curtiz’s 1942 film Casablanca never seemed to be on track to become a classic. It only fell into that mold after the fact, and maybe that’s why it seems to work so well – it doesn’t feel like it’s carrying any of that ‘award film’ baggage. It’s just a smartly written script with great characters performed by brilliant actors. Everything seemed to have worked. Our guest this month is film critic and historian Imogen Sara Smith. We start by discussing her background as a film writer and how she started writing about noir in particular (1:40). Then we discuss her commentary track for the new DVD/Blu-ray release of The Scar (aka Hollow Triumph), including the central role of star/producer/director Paul Henreid (5:30), the movie's theme of people not noticing things right in front of them and how that relates to film noir in general (10:25), the great cinematography by John Alton and expressionism in noir (13:40), and one quote from the movie that sums up film noir all in one phrase (18:35). Then we discuss Imogen's NOIR CITY e-magazine article "Wanted Man: The Fugitive" from the Fall 2016 issue about noir transitioning to TV in the 1960s: how The Fugitive exemplified themes and style common to film noir (20:20), older TV shows not being designed for binge-watching (28:50), and the influence of the show's creator Roy Huggins in designing TV concepts that sustain suspense and interest from one episode to the next (31:05). Next up is Imogen's article "A Light In The Dark: Ella Raines and Film Noir's Working Girls" from the Fall 2015 issue of NOIR CITY. We talk about the background and career of 1940s leading lady Ella Raines (35:40) and how she epitomized the working girl character that briefly flourished in film noir, a positive companion to the more widely known femme fatale character (40:00). Then we play a game of hypotheticals: Raines was discovered and groomed by Howard Hawks, but she never appeared in any movies he directed, so which "Hawksian women" would have been good parts for her? (45:35) We also talk about Imogen's book "In Lonely Places: Film Noir Beyond The City." We discuss its overall theme of classic noir films taking place in settings outside cities, and how that reflected post-war trends in the US (56:15), plus just what is it that makes film noir so interesting: we all love the style and the iconography, but there's way more to it that keeps us coming back to these movies that still resonate today (59:55). We conclude with the film series that Imogen programmed in connection with her book (1:08:00). NOIR CITY Austin takes place from Friday May 19 through Sunday May 21 at Austin's Alamo Drafthouse Ritz, with FNF founder and president Eddie Muller introducing the movies. "Don't let's ask for the moon, we have the stars!" Irving Rapper's 1942 film Now, Voyager may have met with mixed reviews but it certainly found its audience, showing that people were thrilled with the on-screen pairing of Bette Davis and Paul Henreid in a story about a woman learning to come out of her shell. It helped that Davis connected so much with this role. She fought for the part and got it, creating one of her iconic and romantic screen personas. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue our Bette Davis series with Rapper's film Now, Voyager.  We talk about Davis and our thoughts of her in general, paired with our thoughts of this film and what works – or doesn't work – for us. We chat about Casey Robinson's script and Olive HIggins Prouty's source material, contemplating issues we have like the flashback structure, and wondering if the story could have been told without them. (We also contemplate the original story, wondering if perhaps its foundation was flashbacks, giving the filmmakers a sense that they needed to include them.) We look at the cast – notably Davis, Henreid, Claude Rains, Gladys Cooper and Mary Wickes – and discuss what they bring to the table. And we revel in the sweepingly romantic themes that composer Max Steiner for which won an Oscar. It's a film that Andy loves and Pete finds problematic in lots of little ways, but certainly one well worth talking about. How does it stack up for you? Check it out then tune in! Pete's Trailer: Gifted — "Once again, you go Chris Evans for making interesting, feel-good, even formulaic non-Cap films that bring a man tear right to my big stupid face. Of all the podcasts in all the world, 1942's Casablanca had to be talked about on this episode of Zach on Film. Casablanca is a 1942 American romantic drama film directed by Michael Curtiz and based on Murray Burnett and Joan Alison's un-produced stage play Everybody Comes to Rick's. The film stars Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, and Paul Henreid; and features Claude Rains, Conrad Veidt, Sydney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre, and Dooley Wilson. Set during World War II, it focuses on a man torn between, in the words of one character, "love and virtue". He must choose between his love for a woman and helping her Czech Resistance leader husband escape the Vichy-controlled Moroccan city of Casablanca to continue his fight against the Nazis. Story editor Irene Diamond convinced producer Hal Wallis to purchase the film rights to the play in January 1942. Brothers Julius J. and Philip G. Epstein were initially assigned to write the script. However, despite studio resistance, they left after the attack on Pearl Harbor to work on Frank Capra's Why We Fight series. Howard Koch was assigned to the screenplay until the Epsteins returned. Casey Robinson assisted with three weeks of rewrites, but his work would later go uncredited. Wallis chose Curtiz to direct the film after his first choice, William Wyler, became unavailable. Filming began on May 25, 1942, and ended on August 3, and was shot entirely at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, with the exception of one sequence at Van Nuys Airport in Van Nuys. Although Casablanca was an A-list film with established stars and first-rate writers, no one involved with its production expected it to be anything out of the ordinary. It was just one of hundreds of pictures produced by Hollywood every year. Show your thanks to Major Spoilers for this episode by becoming a Major Spoilers VIP.
