We feed the self doubt.Lesley Logan 0:14  Welcome to the Be It Till You See It podcast where we talk about taking messy action, knowing that perfect is boring. I'm Lesley Logan, Pilates instructor and fitness business coach. I've trained thousands of people around the world and the number one thing I see stopping people from achieving anything is self-doubt. My friends, action brings clarity and it's the antidote to fear. Each week, my guest will bring bold, executable, intrinsic and targeted steps that you can use to put yourself first and Be It Till You See It. It's a practice, not a perfect. Let's get started. Brad Crowell 0:56  Welcome back to the Be It Till You See It interview recap where my co-host in life Lesley and I are gonna dig into the restorative convo that she had with Christian de la Huerta in our last episode. If you have not yet listened to that interview, feel free to pause this right now and look at Lesley's face on YouTube because I stole our intro and then go back and listen to Christian and Lesley chit-chatting, which was an amazing episode, like, really funny actually, I literally laughed out loud in the grocery store while I was listening to this, and then come back and listen to this one and join us for this recap. It's worth it y'all it's a good one.Lesley Logan 1:34  Oh my gosh. And you did it so well. It was your first try. Not really irritates me you did it so well. And it's your first try. I practice, I fuck it up all the time and you did it so random. Brad Crowell 1:49  You do amazing, love, you do so well. I love it. Today is JanuaryLesley Logan 1:55  No, it's my turn. It's my turn. My turn. It is National Can Do Day. Talk about it. Be it till you see it day. It encourages us to do things we are capable of doing and that we always dreamt of. It motivates us to concentrate our strengths and turn our dreams into a reality through determination and willpower. Brad Crowell 2:13  Love it. National Can Do Day. Lesley Logan 2:17  Yeah, I love a can-do attitude. Brad Crowell 2:19  Yeah. I mean, you know what else? What is? What is be it till you see it? You know, what else is it? Lesley Logan 2:25  Yeah. I can do it. You can do it. Today, we're in Sedona, Arizona. Love how that sounds. Brad Crowell 2:31  That's the only reason I started remembering Sedona because I kept getting stuck with all the S's we've got Sarasota springs, we've got Saratoga, no Saratoga Springs, Sarasota, Florida. And then Sedona couldn't I just couldn't bring it up. But until they went Sedona, Arizona and Arizona, I was like it's in Arizona and Sedona, Arizona. Lesley Logan 2:53  And also like we had some people were like, I want to have lunch with you. I'm like, I know, but I want to have lunch to this one spot. And they don't even know if it's on the route. But I want to have lunch to this one spot. Brad Crowell 3:02  Sure, we'll figure it out (inaudible). Lesley Logan 3:05  So if you want to drive further up the road, then like we're gonna have lunch in this one spot. Anyways, so excited, it's the last stop.Brad Crowell 3:12  Holy macaroni. We have been on the road for 28 days, y'all. And we will be home tonight.Lesley Logan 3:18  I know. I know. I know. And then I kick off eLevate tomorrow. And so here is the deal y'all. Brad Crowell 3:24  I guess we better make it home. Lesley Logan 3:25  Better make it home. (Inaudible) Here's the deal. If you were like fuck, I was gonna do that eLevate mentorship, I've been really wanting that. The kickoff call is something you could miss because we actually start in February.Brad Crowell 3:38  Yeah, the first weekend workshop is February. Lesley Logan 3:40  My goal and hope is that this is filled with the 12 Amazing people by the time that this comes out, but it's possible that you could still get in because actually in round three, we had a girl, Alexis, who listens to this podcast. And she's like, I wonder if there's a spot and we happen to have someone had a family emergency drop out. And she got their spot. It's true one week before we started. So I'm just saying peeps, that could be you. It could be you and my mentorship is for teachers who are tired of burning out tired of pre-planning tired of feeling insecure, low confidence, imposter syndrome. And also we'd like to understand what Joe supplies why behind the what was. I'm gonna teach you that so lesleylogon.co/elevate is what you want to go to. Brad Crowell 4:21  Do it.Lesley Logan 4:21  And then in a couple of weeksBrad Crowell 4:23  Stay tuned. Lesley Logan 4:24  If you are on the waitlist for the Cambodia retreat. Brad Crowell 4:27  That's right. Key detail there. Those who are on the waitlist. On the waitlist.Lesley Logan 4:34  They get the best deal on the retreat and it will come into your inbox in a couple of weeks, mid-January. And then if there's any spots left we'll go public, but you won't get as good of a deal as it was on the waitlist. You go to lesleylogon.co/retreats plural retreat with an S, if you want to know what plural means, and I don't know sometimes my words don't sound right so I was likeBrad Crowell 5:01  You're nailing it babe. That'll get you on the waitlist and then we will be emailing everyone in a few weeks. In a couple of weeks, sorry. And you will get the details on when we're going to Kampuchea, Cambodia.Lesley Logan 5:04  And then after we celebrate my birthday, it is Agency Mini Number 10. It's six years of Agency, our coaching group for fitness instructors, Pilates instructors and studio owners. And our agency is now six, six years old. And you wanna know something we have still two of the original members. Brad Crowell 5:33  You wanna know something.Lesley Logan 5:34  You wanna know, you wanna know something. We have two, we have two of the original five members. Yes, that's right. Five people. Five people. And two are still with us. Way to go ladies. And then we have dozens who have been with us for five and then Brad Crowell 5:53  Four, three, totally. Lesley Logan 5:54  If you go half our members have been with us for four like four or more. It's like just fucking awesome. Like, it's so fun to see what they're doing. We've got folks launching, we've got people buying extra studios, we've got people, it's just amazing. Brad Crowell 6:05  Yeah, courses. Now they're leading retreats, they're they're doing all the things. It's like, really encouraging and exciting to see them build a solid foundation in their core business and then branch out. It's awesome. Lesley Logan 6:18  But if you want seven days of coaching, getting any questions you ever had on your mind answered, honestly. And you want that for $67 or less? Yeah, you heard me right. $67 or less. You want to go to Agency Mini on the waitlist, its profitablepilates.com/mini.Brad Crowell 6:39  profitablepilates.com/mini. And I I'm not going to spill the beans, but we have a we've been making some changes, some very exciting changes in the program, and what it's going to look like after Mini is over. So I cannot wait to reveal all of that. To the Mini members. Lesley Logan 7:01  All right. Before we get into the amazing interview that had you cracking up. I'm literally like, what, we were funny? I did love him. We have an audience question to answer. Brad Crowell 7:10  Yes. What are the latest books that you are reading? Lesley Logan 7:15  Yeah, I love answering this question. So you can keep saying I answered every several months because it comes through because there's different books. And Brad is like really into his books. But I'mBrad Crowell 7:24  Just super into ebooks. In fact, my books have taken over my podcast time and I have not listened to podcasts now in two months.Lesley Logan 7:32  Wow. I know more than you that's happening in the world. Brad Crowell 7:34  Yeah, yeah. 100%. I'm, like completely disconnected, which is really weird for me, because I'm a political news junkie. And I love to stay up on everything. And I have been sucked into these books that Lesley Logan 7:47  You wanna tell them what the books are?Brad Crowell 7:48  Yeah. Yeah, I started reading this series when I was probably 10. Maybe 12? I don't know. I guess I was in middle school. So, 13, 13 because that's when I got into seventh grade. My friends, we're reading them. It's a it's a series called The Wheel of Time. It's by Robert Jordan. He is he kind of picked up the mantle of the epic saga that was created by you know, the the Lord of the Rings series and Lesley Logan 8:18  The hero's journey. Brad Crowell 8:20  Yeah, this is this is it's it goes on and on and on. But this this one is amazing. Robert Jordan really took it to the next level. It's 15 books in the series. And each book is probably between 500 and 1000 pages pages long. And I've been listening to them on audiobooks. And I can't recommend that enough. It is just an unbelievable journey. And it's awesome. So yeah, for me, that's what I've been really spending my free time with. And the other day I went and I downloaded a whole bunch of business books, and I looked at him and said, I do business all day for my job. And my listening time is me time. And so I've been just enjoying my books.Lesley Logan 9:08  Yeah. Well, I love that. My books are all probably business.Brad Crowell 9:14  That's okay. That's not a bad thing.Lesley Logan 9:18  So I should have wrote this down. It's Tia Graham's book. Something about happy leaders to Graham. What is her book? She's gonna be on the podcast. Brad Crowell 9:28  Be a Happy Leader: Stop Feeling Overwhelmed. Lesley Logan 9:32  Yes. So she I'm reading her book, or by the time you've listened to this I've read her book. I'm really excited about it. Also Awakening the Soul of Power is Christian's latest book and it is also was traveled with me on this tour for me to read into which was already started it before I interviewed him and I'm finishing it. And then I started listening to Money: A Love Swith Kate Northrup, which is an old book but I just heard about it. And it made me think of We Shall be Millionaires. And which I still want. I still want the author of We Shall Be Millionaires on this podcast. My listeners, I need your help. I need her to want to be on my podcast y'all.Brad Crowell 10:17  Rachel Rogers. Lesley Logan 10:18  Rachel Rogers. She's amazing. She's amazing. And then we're actually doing the book list for next year's book club for Agency members, which is completely voluntary, and they're not allowed to be overwhelmed by being in the book club. They are supposed to be a responsible book lover, which is, you won't read the book if you're overwhelmed. And one of the books that we're actually thinking of bringing in is the Four Agreements, which is old easy, you guys. I read it on a flight to Nashville, and I finished it before the fight was over. And I was a little pissed. But it's such a great it's like essential rules to live by. I really love that one. And it makes me think of one more book that I probably mentioned before the holy fucking moly, it's January, let's bring it up. Brad Crowell 11:05  I already know where you're going. Lesley Logan 11:06  Do you?Brad Crowell 11:07  Yeah.Lesley Logan 11:07  The body is not an apology. Brad Crowell 11:09  No, that's not what I thought you're gonna say. Lesley Logan 11:11  Well, then you can bring that up what you thought I was gonna say. Brad Crowell 11:13  I don't know the name of it, but it's the one the Lesley Logan 11:17  The Big Leap. Brad Crowell 11:17  That one where you pour coffee for two preconceivedLesley Logan 11:21  Oh, shit. That's a good one. Okay. Well, let me get to all those in a second. So The Body is not an Apology by Sonya Renee Taylor. I highly recommend the audible on that. She reads it herself. And then I also recommend you listening to her interview on Brene Browns podcast years ago, I listened to it in 2020 might have been 2021. And y'all have got to stop shaming and judging yourself about your body and punishing yourself. Nothing pissed me off more than two days after Thanksgiving. Watching every fitness thing out there going. All right, here's your workout to burn off that Turkey. We do not work out to punish ourselves for what we did two days ago. We work out to be stronger, to have longevity, to have better posture to have energy, stamina, strength, positivity, confidence, all the things we have to. So anyways, The Body is no an Apology is an amazing book. And I highly recommend that interview with her because it really helps you go whoa, me being distracted by what I think people are staring at, which they're not, is keeping you from being super powerful in this world. And that's put the people in power want because then you're not able to kick their pedestal out. Anyways. You're talking about the, not The Big Leap, but the other one. Oh, E-Squared, E-Squared, Pam Grout. It's a little blue. But I think you should do it. Because I poured coffee for two and I have a husband. I'm justBrad Crowell 12:55  That's the secret y'all. Brad Crowell 12:56  That's the secret. Lesley Logan 12:57  You automatically, you magically get a husband if you pour coffee for two.Lesley Logan 13:00  It was like chapter four. That's actually I don't know that was in the book. But chapter four or five was like Brad Crowell 13:05  Pam Grout is gonna be so excited about hearing (inaudible). Lesley Logan 13:07  Pam Grout, come on the podcast. Brad Crowell 13:08  Come on the podcast. Lesley Logan 13:09  How do we get Pam Grout get oh Google alert about us. Pam Grout let's say it one more time. But she I don't even know where the if the coffee for two came from E-Squared. But what did come from E-Squared was me writing your name down and hoping that you would like not hoping but like you write the name down and then like the universe makes you call me. So anyways, all those books are amazingBrad Crowell 13:32  She has a new one. E-Cubed. Lesley Logan 13:34  It's not that new. And I haven't read it yet. But I will. Maybe I'll read that next.Brad Crowell 13:41  All right, now let's talk about Christian de la Huerta. Christian is a renowned spiritual teacher and transformation coach. He's an award-winning author who has spoken at universities, conferences and TEDx talks. His latest book, Awakening the Soul of Power, explores themes of empowerment, conscious relationships, and spiritual transformation. Listening to him was so peaceful. Lesley Logan 14:10  I know I want him to do a sleep story. Christian, if you're listening, do you have a sleep story? If you don't may recommend that you just read someone else's stories. Like any story, it can be Baa Baa Black Sheep, whatever it is, and put it on Spotify. I need about eight hours of it and I will out you can just be my sleep. Um, this is my request. This is my you know, like, just love him. And so he's just a gentle soul. And when I was talking to him, I was like, Oh, where are you? And he's like, where am I? He was like in Colombia. And he's living the Nomad life. And I just really love that about him. He's just, you know, he's doing his thing and he's so easy to talk to. His book is full of all this amazing stuff. And one of the things that I love that he said, which is actually it goes back to what I was talking about with Sunday morning Taylor is not only are we wasting our potential in terms of what we think about but it's worse than that we do such a number on ourselves with our negative self-talk. We feed the self-doubt. Lesley Logan 15:10  So we are so good at overthinking negative stuff about ourselves. And then it's, you think it's just happening in your brain. But y'all, it is happening to your body. And then it is out also affecting how you show up in this world. You are dimming your fucking light so much, people don't, people don't get to experience what you are the only person in this world who can do what you do, you're it. And like you. I was talking to Jessica Pompano today. And she was, we have a podcast episode come out with her, and we're talking about how she's in clothing and styling and like women who don't like a part of their body, they'll just wear bigger baggier clothes to hide it. And she's like, that actually isn't making you feel good either. Because you just wearing a bigger baggier clothes. And her big thing is about highlighting your biggest asset, and what that does for us. And so I just I say this, because if you are sitting here being hard on yourself at any point, in your day you are taking, you're literally holding yourself back from hitting the goals that you have. Because you're slowing yourself down. Because why on earth if you judge yourself for how you look? Or how you said something, or how you did something? How is that also going to have the energy to like, take on a new challenge? You've killed all your powerful energy. Yeah, you're like, if you think of a video game, it's like when you get hit by like, you get that little warning shot where your power goes down. And then like that you did that that's you talk to you about yourself and like, oh, but I'm going to take on this big powerful like ruler boss, right? You can't do it.Brad Crowell 16:57  I mean, I think about like Mario Kart, you know, when you are going full speed and you you got hit by a shell. You're okay, your momentum is gone and have to work your way back up to that full speed. Lesley Logan 17:09  It's so much harder to do it. It's so much harder. Could you win? Sure. I've won many video games that I play with, like my worst little guys. Because like after hours of playing it going, that's gonna go. But if you if you were actually to be kind yourself, talk yourself up. Imagine what you could do. And I look, if you're a narcissistic asshole, that's probably a dangerous thing. But if you listen to this podcast, it's because you're not. So I don't feel bad. And I'm not worried about this information being in your ears.Brad Crowell 17:41  You know, he talked about the limiting role of our ego. When he was discussing the benefits of breathwork and its healing effects. You guys had a quick super side note here, I thought was really interesting that he was raised in super Catholic family, and then got into, like, the healing nature of breathwork and how much of a problem his parents had with that. And instead of him like, not going to be a doctor, psychologist, I mean, that I thought was really funny. But he said that both breathwork and shamanic experiences involve transcending the limited ego mind and experience a sense of expanding identity. This is a lot too, for me to like, be like, Yeah, I'm excited about that. But Lesley Logan 18:29  You just said shamanic, which is Brad Crowell 18:31  I did say shamanic. It's shamanic.Lesley Logan 18:33  Yeah. But also like, I never like Brad Crowell 18:35  Shaman. Lesley Logan 18:36  Yeah. We just had a shaman on so like, we're, just a skeptical shaman. Brad Crowell 18:41  A skeptical shaman, yeah, skeptical shaman, badass. Breathwork and shamanic experiences evolve, transcending the limited ego mind. And I think that's actually the clutch. The the, that's the crux of it is the the ego is the limiting factor. Right? We all have ego, whether you are like this, you know, verbose, arrogant, like in your face, like ego, or you're diminutive and soft spoken. And whatever. Lesley Logan 19:18  Oh. By the way, being a people pleaser is your ego. Brad Crowell 19:20  That's well, that's, that's what I mean. It's exactly it's the opposite of the, you know, the arrogant fool. But it's still ego. It's actually still ego. It's just the other side of the spectrum of ego. And we all deal with these things. And so he kind of talks about the limited ego mind, which I've never heard it phrased that way before, and how breathwork can help break through and shamanic experiences. You know, I didn't really understand all the things he was talking about with that, but you know, specifically the breathwork part I can can relate to because that is in my life, mostly through you, Lesley, but you know, our ego can dominate everything, it dominates the way that we perceive ourselves the way we perceive others. Brad Crowell 20:14  And, you know, ultimately, his conclusion is that it's an illusion, right? Even if, like, I thought it was interesting, like he'd started talking, go like on another level where he's like, Yeah, you know, you're Lesley, but even Lesley's an illusion. And I was like, okay, I might not be there quite yet. But, you know, I understand where he's going with how the way we perceive ourselves the way we define ourselves, you know, our worldview, like, however you want to call this thing. You know, it's a story we've made up, you know, whether that is a story that we were taught when we were kids, and we adopted and we're holding that on to today? Or, you know, it's something that we've told ourselves the whole time, you know, or or, you know, I just found it really interesting that his focus on breathwork was to battle ego. Brad Crowell 20:26  Yeah, well, because the, the actual thing is that trauma leaves the body through movement and breath. So, I'm not denouncing therapy, I fucking love my therapist, but she's also a somatic therapist. So we did a lot of like, different kinds of things there. But you can talk things out all you want. But if you really want to release some things in your life, it's probably happening through your movement as well. So if you find yourself crying or frustratedLesley Logan 21:08  Well, what's the book, the body never forgets? Lesley Logan 21:40  The Body Keeps the Score.Brad Crowell 21:41  The Body Keeps the Score. Yeah. And that very interesting, because the movement is what release release that the trauma through the like the book that we're talking about in that bookLesley Logan 21:53  Actually, just a little side note, we actually have a course on Profitable Pilates that is from a true therapist, licensed therapist. That is, I was really excited to get on our site, because as teachers, you don't even want to be a teacher, you guys, if you have a friend who just like our family member or something like you're like, what is happening, like, everything was good, and now you're crying? And we're like, It's okay. You're okay. Everything's okay. Like when babies are crying like, you're okay, you're fine. What if you actually said, how long have you been feeling this way? How long have you been feeling this way. And that's what (inaudible) gave us, as teachers to ask people, because I've had clients on myself, like you're just crying. And it's like, and you're embarrassed and other stuff, and what the person says next can make you bottle it back up, or let it go. And if you're someone who's around someone who's like, having some sort of release, and oftentimes don't even know what they're releasing, because we're going back to Dr. Bender's episode, she's like, don't try to reason with what you're feeling. Because logic is probably going to be wrong. If you just say how long you've been feeling this way, it allows the person to just like take a moment and pause and actually kind of be with what they're feeling as opposed to bottling it back in. And as a teacher, it is actually out of my scope to therapize anyone. So the next step, I could say is like, well, you know, if you feel like this is something you are needing to work on, you know, may I suggest a few things, right? So like, and then I can recommend, I actually cannot actually give true, like, go see this person technically. But that is something for those of you it's a really great response and saying it's okay, or I'm sorry, those two phrases, actually are not the best phrases as a response for someone who is releasing something from their body. And as a breathwork professional, when someone is crying in breathwork, actually, do try not to actually acknowledge it all. Because I don't want them to, I don't know what their tendencies are. So if their tendency is to do things for attention, if I were to acknowledge that then I could be going into that. So it is more important that you just release it, and then we don't attach anything to it, that you just get to let it go like a cloud going by. So at any rate, I think it's really important to know it's okay to feel weird things when you're moving.Lesley Logan 22:10  Yeah, yeah. I mean, I, uh, it's been a long time since I've experienced that because I remember the reason that I started going to yoga in the first place, you know, because it just felt like trash. You know, in my mind, my body wasn't like, hurting so much. But my I just felt like a terrible human. And, and it took a long time to work through that. But yoga really helped me in that movement. But just bringing it back to Christian overcoming the ego's limitation is essential for self-awareness and spiritual growth and how do you overcome the ego? You have to understand how the ego mind works. And he has a book about that. And he actually has practical steps in that book. And the book is Awakening the Soul of Power. Brad Crowell 24:34  You guys, Gloria Estefan, she wrote a little quote for him. And I'm sorry, Christian, I'm just gonna say this. I saw her name. And I was like, I love Gloria Estefan, so of course, I read your book. But I love it. It's so good. I'm so glad I'm so grateful for Gloria Estefan.Brad Crowell 25:58  But But in I thought, I thought what was interesting was that he has practical steps to understand the ego.Lesley Logan 26:07  Yeah, which we all need to understand because there's that there's other there's tons of books on ego. But Brad Crowell 26:14  We've talked about ego as the enemy before. Lesley Logan 26:16  Yeah. And also like, I'm sure it's great. I know you've read it. But I also think like, great, it's the enemy. Now what, what do you do about that? And that's where I think Christian book comes in, because it's like, here's what the ego is, and here's how you can work with it. And so you guys, if you are struggling with imposter syndrome, if you are people pleasing, if you're playing small, it's all egoBrad Crowell 26:42  If you're afraid to talk to people to sell them Pilates. Lesley Logan 26:45  Right. Or if you are afraid to put your, ladies we already know this, the science is in, If you have nine out of 10 requirements for a job, you don't apply. That's ego. You think you need that 10th thing before you can apply for something, that's your ego, you know.Brad Crowell 27:03  Or if you feel like you need another certification in order to be qualified that's also ego.  Lesley Logan 27:10  So um, so anyways, Christian is amazing, I really hope we get to run into him. I meanBrad Crowell 27:17  He's like bopping around the wall.Lesley Logan 27:18  Bopping around, but if you have like a retreat or something and like, you know, send your girl a note.Brad Crowell 27:25  I think he does. He did mention retreats. Lesley Logan 27:27  Oh, we should go on one. What a vacation. Brad Crowell 27:29  That'd be amazing. Lesley Logan 27:30  Let's do it. I'm in. Okay, I'm in. Whatever it is, I'm in. Brad Crowell 27:34  All right, so finally, let's talk about those Be It Action Items. What bold, executable, intrinsic or targeted action items, can we take away from your convo with Christian de la Huerta. He said, deepen your relationship with the breath. Because doing so can change your life. He talked about short, long, breathwork sessions, like could be 30 seconds, it could be 90 minutes. One thing he also mentioned that I thought was interesting was it's the exhale that people don't focus on. Because when you don't exhale enough, you end up taking in you're inhaling really shallow breaths. Lesley Logan 28:16  Yeah. And Joseph Pilates was really big on the exhale. He said if you don't exhale, your lungs are a cemetery for disease and infection. Brad Crowell 28:24  Well, I mean, it affects everything. You know. Lesley Logan 28:28  Also shallow breath just starts causing stress. So.Brad Crowell 28:31  But uh, you know, he said that, it can, if you want, he started talking about putting a timer on your phone, where you can just take a quick evaluation of yourself, like, every hour on the hour, like, use that to be like, how do I feel right now? You know, do I, should I do (inhale-exhale) you know, like, can you how can that like, what happens if you do that? You know, and you also complimented him on how he looks? And he's like, I attribute it to breathwork 100%.Brad Crowell 28:31  Because he's not. He's young, obviously. Brad Crowell 28:39  But he's been doing this for 30 years. Lesley Logan 28:45  He how old is he? Because I think we (inaudible) his age. Brad Crowell 28:58  He didn't say. Lesley Logan 28:59  Oh, okay, well, I feel like I know. And he looks really good.Brad Crowell 29:20  Yes. But he said that it's about becoming more mindful, attentive and more aware of what's going on within us when you notice your breath. What about you?Lesley Logan 29:30  Okay, so he said, we talked about missed opportunities, and the things we don't intend to do because we're fear of failure. But he actually believes there's no such thing as failure. Because if you learn from it, then it's not failure at all. We're actually becoming better human beings from it. And what I I really love about that is like if there's anything you feel you failed at, what if you actually just took a look back what you learned from that? And then can you just change that from failure to experience or achievement even, you know like God I fucking I you know what? I'm so pissed at the A's straight A's and the F's from the great I'm not saying I'm for everyone gets a trophy. I'm not that girl. Don't worry about it. There's a ton of psychology on how that doesn't work. But the fact that we are so obsessed as children at a certain age, it happens around Junior High sixth grade with what letter is on your report card, which is just how you test, it has nothing to do with the journey that got you to the test, pisses me the fuck off because it made me this overachiever just fucking stressed case sometimes. Thank God for breathwork and my (inaudible) mat and my red lights and all the things. But I, what I hope as a recovering perfectionist and overachiever, I have been able to do is like, I am very proud of how we do not harp on the goals we've missed. We really do go, well, we didn't do that. Okay, we didn't do that. We should have done this. Okay, we didn't do that. Okay, well, what can like we do it as a team, which makes it really helpful. So may I suggest, you don't need to have a teammate to do this, but before you start harping on yourself about something you didn't do well, I don't know. Maybe you introduced yourself, weirdly, or you like stumbled into an interview and like you feel like you embarrass yourself. Just take a moment and go what did I learn from that? And what if that isn't a failure? And by the way, if your best friend told you about this, would you go you fucking failed? God, you, like you wouldn't do it. So like, what would you say if your best... jeez, you suck. Like, God, how many times are you gonna fail? Like, what if you treated yourself in that moment, like your best friend went through that and what would you say to that person? Right. So Christian, can we be friends? Okay, sign me up for the next retreat. I'm in. And also, thank you for being here. And this amazing book is just wonderful. And it's the next read y'all so check out the show notes and get your version.Lesley Logan 29:44   All right, loves I'm Lesley Logan. Lesley Logan 32:11  And I'm Brad Crowell and you just missed the hilarious joke. Lesley Logan 32:16  We're amazing. Brad Crowell 32:17  We're amazing. Lesley Logan 32:18  So is Christian. "Even when I walk through the darkest valley,  I will not be afraid." (Psalm 23:4 NLT) Today's guest, Amanda Jackman, walked through one of the darkest valleys of a lifetime that anyone can face.    God's presence as she walked in the moments of death, fear, and fighting for life is why Amanda is now able to testify of victory in such a way that encourages others.   *******   Kimberly Hobbs   Welcome to empowering lives with purpose. And I'm your host, Kimberly Hobbs. I'm the founder of Women world leaders. Ladies, we are happy that you have joined with us today. And I would love to welcome our guests who is also joined with us. Amanda Jackman, from Michigan. Welcome, Amanda. Amanda Jackman   Hello, ladies. And Kimberly, thank you so much for having me. Kimberly Hobbs   I'm so happy that you decided to join with us today. And we're just excited with the content of today's podcast is going to be intense. But we pray that you feel God's presence in this podcast because that was one of the words that we prayed over today was presence, not not the presence that you're getting as a gift at Christmas, but the presence of our Lord. And Amanda's story is quite remarkable. And she has so willingly come on to share this miraculous story with you in hopes that it's going to help encourage you to add the words as they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb. And by the word of their testimony. That's revelation 1211. And home My goodness, by sharing the story in what God has done in Amanda's life through her story is a powerful God has worked exceedingly abundantly beyond I think what she has even ever imagined. So we are excited to share that with you ladies. And our hope and purpose is that through sharing these stories, that it helps you to overcome the enemy when you know other people are going through similar situations, trials, tragedies, that they need to overcome that you can relate that to your own life. And just understand that God never leaves us or forsakes us and He gives us each other so that we can encourage each other and empower each other to run after him during some of these times in our life that we just shouldn't be going through alone. So before I start into interviewing Amanda, I just want to tell you a little bit about this precious woman of God. She is a lifetime resident of a small town in MLA City, Michigan. Her and her husband have four children. And she is a proud mom of these four children. She is a paralegal and enjoys reading and writing. And today we're going to talk about God's presence, God's presence that he gave to Amanda at a time when she needed him the most. One of Amanda's favorite scriptures is Psalm 23. And that is even though it's Psalm 23, four, even though I walk through the darkest valleys, I will not be afraid of evil. You are always with me, your rod and staff, they comfort me. The scriptures means so much to you, Amanda and it is a reminder of God's presence when you needed him most. So today, I'm just going to ask if you can begin by sharing the tragedy that came upon you, yourself and the darkest valley of your life. Amanda Jackman   Well, thank you again, so much for allowing me to share. It was Labor Day weekend, this past Labor Day. So September 5 2021. We were at a family get together at my father in law's there were 10 children, including my four. And there were 11 adults. So there was a ton of people there. We had people inside the house outside the house. We had gone swimming, and then we stopped swimming. We ate dinner and had dessert together. And it was a really special day with our family. And I was inside with my my youngest, my baby and I was talking with my two sister in laws. And God told me to find Walter, my son. He said, Where's Walter? And I stood up mid conversation. And I walked outside and I looked at my husband I said babe, where's Walter? He's like, he's not in there with you. And I said, No, where is he? My my My Sorry, there was a scream. And everybody knew what that scream meant. My father in law's house has a pool. And so my son was at the bottom of the pool. My husband immediately dove in, pulled him out. And he, he was not there, and I will spare details. But he wasn't, he was no longer living at that point. Um, so my husband passed him off to Cindy. And she played them on the deck, and my brother and sister in law started CPR. And I'm CPR certified. But that was my baby. And I just stood there screaming, my husband said, You need to leave, walk away, please, please walk away. Don't, don't watch, just go. So I went to the end of the driveway, and I cried out and I prayed, I said, God, you can't do this. That's my baby like you, you don't get to take him from me. And I pray to the boldest prayer that I've ever prayed. And I said, Lord, You are bringing him back to me, you are restoring him fully, he will have no brain damage. And you're going to perform this miracle for us. And I'm going to tell the world about it, I'm going to get people to pray for him that have never prayed in their life, I'm going to get people to pray for him down on their knees, who haven't prayed in months or years. And I'm going to do that because you're bringing him back. And so it was it was totally unlike anything. I'm, I've been a Christian for many years. But this was very outside of the box, and very bold. And so the officer arrived, the paramedics arrived, and we loaded them up. My brother and sister in law had him breathing before the ambulance arrived, which was huge in his recovery. But then we were in the ambulance. And the paramedic, I asked him if there was anything I could do. And he said, No, Your presence is enough for your son. And I told them, I need to petition prayer, I need to call upon the people in my life who are going to pray fervently for my baby. And so that's that's what I did. I took a moment and I started texting people. And I said, I need you. This is what happened. And I I let go of the shame of the accident. And I just begged for prayer from people I knew were incredible Christ followers. Kimberly Hobbs   AMEN At that moment, and you said that you'd let go of the shame at that moment, which I think if you can just share with the listeners right away, because, again, you think about it, think about it. She's the mom, of course. So people are going to be like, Why weren't you watching your chick, your child? Why weren't you this way? You know, and there is shame involved. People might say What do you mean shame? Why did you have to let go of shame start telling people but can you describe that a little bit? Amanda Jackman   Yeah, absolutely. The the enemy likes to work against you. And I think he works the hardest with shame and guilt. And in the moment, he could tell me that I was a bad mom. And he could tell me Oh, my husband or Oh my family. And the reality of the situation is it was a tragic accident. There were a ton of people there. And when everybody's watching the pool, nobody's watching the pool. And it was just it was a lot of commotion. My son is a curious was a curious two year old and he he snuck over that side, he snuck over the side into the pool. I mean, it was not like the gate was open, it was very end even if it were it was an accident, there was no intention and and everybody experiences different trials and struggles and that was that was hard to to be the parent of a tragic accident like this that you feel like could have been prevented. And we you know, we it's not like we were negligent in the situation. We were all there and we were all very present but we all have lapses where we can't fully commit 100% of our time. We all have lapses and some kids right on the wall and and mine snuck into the pool. Kimberly Hobbs   Right? And that battle started right away with you Amanda because the enemy is telling you bad mom bad mom and you're hearing that but you're like, I need help. I need prayer I need people to and so you pushed through those voices in your head when you just described that shame and guilt and praise God you did because there's power in prayer there is power when people come in numbers and pray together. So remember that do not isolate the enemy wants to keep us isolated and alone when tragedy hits. And so he can poison our minds with lies in their lives from the pit of hell. So all my good so you push through and that ambulance and thank God you did Amanda and also some other things happened in that ambulance and on the way to the hospital and things that started showing you that God was there. His presence was with you. And I know you shared with me that the paramedic you know, you had gone to school with her. And she was comforting to you. She was putting her arms around you at a time when there was nobody else there to comfort you. God was showing you comfort in that moment. And ladies listening, when things are happening around us, we have to look for God in every situation. So Amanda has comfort she had comfort in the ER when she got to the hospital and I know the first hospital you went to, they intubated Walter there. And then they couldn't help him any further and they had to move him to another hospital or another transport. And more people were showing up that God put in your path that knew you that were substantial people in your life that all of a sudden they're they're helping you. And when your husband was Iraq and he was falling apart, you had some confidence because God wish had shown up there. So let's talk about right now, how you had that confidence. But then all of a sudden, something switched. You told me about that. Can you talk about those two weeks in the hospital? Amanda Jackman   Yes. So when we when we arrived to the hospital, actually, it was COVID. So you're only allowed mom and dad. And they actually made an exception and allowed our children's pastor who met us at the hospital because of praying and seeking out that. And he was able to lay his hands on Walter and he was able to pray for him when he was first intubated there, which was huge and so special. And it was a struggle at first the first 24 hours and they husband, he was a mess until they did an EEG I want to say is an EEG, and they determined he did not have any rain damage. And so my husband, okay, and because he felt he felt this huge burden of guilt because he was the one outside with Walter. And that released the guilt from him. And, and so we, we knew we were going to be there for a little while that he was going to be intubated. So he's sedated, fully sedated, there was nurse 24 hours in the room with him. So if we left it was okay. So I actually stopped home, to grab some fresh clothes, because we knew it was going to be a while and to say hi to my other children to let them know things were okay. And I just grabbed my mail, and I grabbed clothes, and I stopped up at the hospital. And we already had blessings pouring on us like gift cards for food, all of that just so I just brought everything with me to the hospital. And I sat down in the room, and I had my voice of Truth magazine. And my dear friend Jessica, she writes a column. She's actually the reason why I have the magazine. And so every day, I honor her every time I get the magazine, I honor her by opening up, and I look in the table of contents. And I find where she's at. And I read her first, because she's the reason that I have this magazine. So I honor her in that way. Kimberly Hobbs   And her her column is titled A Beautiful Mess in Voice of Truth in case anybody is wondering. Yeah, go ahead. Amanda Jackman   So Jessica's columns, she was her article, she was on the right side of the page. And when you look, we've trained our brains to read left to right. So I looked over to the left page, and there was this incredible drawing of a mama bear with her two cubs on her back. And it was titled carried. And underneath there was the verse that I had been leaning into for four days at that point, Isaiah 43 Two, when you pass through the waters, I will be with you. And when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. And that's not your everyday Bible verse. It's a very specific verse. And I had been praying that when I was in the end of the driveway, I knew it and my heart was praying it like God, you are with him. He wasn't alone in the water. You were with him. And you're gonna be with us now you're going to be with us through this trial. And there was this picture it right there on the other side of justice column and it was like, Okay, God, I see you. I see you, I feel you're here. You're here with us. And it was cached. It was just such a special moment. And one other really, really powerful moment that we had we had gone outside for the first time. And it was beautiful. It was September it was beautiful day we stand on a picnic table. and all of our pastors were on a retreat together. And they all took turns praying over our son and an over us. And my dear friend, Pastor Steve, he is very into looking up the meaning of words. And Walter means commander of the army. And so he said, we're going to wave this as a banner over Walters life. And I believe that in that moment, I was so full of hope, and understanding that my little two year old boy, he was going to come in armies for Jesus through this. And that if if a baby can flood the gates of heaven, what a remarkable way to use this tragedy. And any dead we had people telling us that they hadn't prayed in months, they showed up and said, we've been on our knees praying and, and, and how special that this little boy in this tragic story could could touch somebody in that way. Kimberly Hobbs   Wow, that's so beautiful. That's so beautiful. And the beauty too, is the confirmations that God was giving you in that hospital stay through different ways. And he again was showing his presence, Amanda to you. And, again, ladies, as you listen to what Amanda was just sharing in your may be going through something, it's again, look for God's presence and how he's showing up in your trial and tragedy. And he's always going to let you know in little whispers that he's the hair. And this gave, like Amanda said, the confidence to her heart, she knew there was no coincidence that that scripture and voice of truth was firmly planted there by the Lord Himself. For that moment that Amanda was going to pick it up from the mail, gather her mail, go to the hospital and sit down and read it. He already knew that he already had it planned. And he already has something planned for you, ladies, whatever you're going through that is going to be significant enough to get your attention and let you know that he is there, he will always let us know because he never leaves us or forsakes. Us. So Amanda, we know, you know that God works miracles, Walter is going to Command armies God has told you that he has shown you that. And he has a quip us to know the ways that he moves. And you as a mom are going to be watching this. I know for sure and encouraging him in that way. God works miracles, and we read about so many miracles throughout his word. But do you ladies do you really believe that God wants to work a miracle for you? I know, the Bible tells us God is the same yesterday, today and forever. And Amanda, God started showing you that He is God, and He is important in your life. So please take this time and just pour into how the different ways that he showed the importance of himself his presence in your life? Amanda Jackman   Yeah, I think that one of the most important things is that we restore our minds daily. Even if you don't memorize scripture, if you don't sit down and you go word by word, you still have it in your heart. And sitting in a hospital with my husband. And my two year old boy, I knew enough scripture in my heart to combat anything that the enemy came against me with. You know, that verse in Isaiah that I shared with you. The enemy tried to tell me that, that nobody was there with my son in the water, that he was all alone and that he was waiting for me and that is a lie. Because in Isaiah 43 To the Lord says, When you pass through the waters, I will be with you. So my son had had Jesus's arms wrapped around him, and what better place for him to be? What better place for him to be right. And the Lord, he shows us in so many different scriptures, his presence, you know, Isaiah 53, by his stripes we are healed. That was one that I leaned into also that that the Lord has the capacity to heal us of anything that we just have to have the power to believe that he can you know cast your worries onto him first Peter five seven, Joshua one nine The Lord is with you wherever you go in that I think the first part of that versus the be strong courageous that everybody talks about. But the second part, the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. If you're in the waters if you're in The valley if you're in the hospital, God didn't leave you. He's right there. The Lord is near to those who call on him Psalm 145 18, Psalm 3480, and the Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil for you are with me, Psalm 23:4 Kimberly Hobbs   Amen. Keep going, girl, this is beautiful! All this scripture. Amanda Jackman   It's all throughout Scripture, I don't know if there's a book you could open in the Bible that doesn't have God is with you. And his presence, he is for you. He, he will use anything that you go through for good, what the enemy meant for evil, he'll use it for good. And, and I just am blown away with his presence through every area of, of the tragedy that we had occur. And even afterwards, the the remarkable things that he's done in our son's lives and in our lives. Gosh, he still answers prayer, we just have to be bold enough to ask him, we just have to be bold enough to petition the throne, and just say, God, this is, this is your will. And I'm going to believe that it's your will. And even if it's not, you're still good. You know, I I remember sitting in the hospital saying, Lord, even if he doesn't come back, you're still good. Lord, even if he comes back and he has brain damage, you are still good, because he'd still be here. Who cares, you know? And then even if he restored and fully, he's still great. It didn't matter, the way that he worked in the situation for us, because we knew ultimately that he would it would be used for good. Kimberly Hobbs   Amen. Yeah. Beautiful. Oh, my gosh. And I just have to ask you, Amanda, you probably weren't knowing I was gonna say this. But just this morning, Amanda was texting back and forth with me and we were praying for each other and it was just so exciting what God was just filling with her but she had a huge prayer, prayer, praise report to share with me that blew me out of the water and brought me to tears. And I sat there reading it like God, you are so good. Even now even as we're preparing this podcast, you are showing your presence there with Amanda and as she steps out and obedience God you did this Amanda shear please with the ladies what he did just today. Amanda Jackman   So Walter, my son has been speech delayed for probably eight months prior to the accident was when we first started getting him help. COVID everybody wearing masks, it was hard for him to read lips. It was just a lot. He really struggled with developing speech. And so we've been trying, I've been trying, I should say, I've been trying to get him to say I love you. And I have been trying for a year and a half, maybe a year and three quarters of a year. Pretty much since we started giving him help. I've been going I love you every day, trying to get him to say it and he will not say it and he'll say sing Baa Baa Black Sheep, but he won't say I love you. And then this morning, I got out of the shower. And he looked at me and he said I love you. I love you. And I just stared at him. Like, did you just say that? Oh, yeah. It was amazing. Kimberly Hobbs   When you cried happy tears that you had said, you know, you said, God, if he ever tells me I love you, it will be the happiest day of my life. And so ladies, we get to share in this with Amanda today because God again. She kept saying God, I'm gonna serve you God, I'm gonna trust you, God, I'm gonna push through. And sometimes we know ladies, it's hard to serve the Lord. And they're, you know, it takes time to and then Amanda when I asked her would you be willing to do a podcast interview because she right away? She said she would write and voice of truth and share her testimony. That was like, right away. Yes. But so how would you feel about sharing a podcast about this? And she said, Yes, right away. And so again, an act of obedience. Until there's no coincidence today is Amanda stepped out in faith to share on this podcast with you today. She's never done a podcast before and it's like wow, you know, like she said, Yes, God, I'll do whatever you call me to do. And I just think that God is showing he's working. Look at the power of God at work. How long have you waited for your child to say I love you those three words that would be so easy to me. Buddy else right? But God waited for just the right time. Just the right time. That's so beautiful. Are you okay, Hon? Amanda Jackman   Yeah, I didn't I didn't prepare for you to say. So you're right. Kimberly Hobbs   Oh no, I know. And then when we rejoice with you, we So rejoice with you and how precious is that. And again, ladies, God knows what you're going through, look to Him in every situation, he's going to walk you through it, he's going to be right there with you. And he's giving you blessings along the way, as you honor him, and you are obedient to Him through life's challenges, because they're not easy. They're not easy. So in close, Amanda, you shared with me, a favorite scripture that God gave you, which is James 112, that says, Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love Him. And wow, you persevered, honey, even when people were saying you were doing this wrong, or doing that wrong through walking through it, you persevered, and you looked to God for your guidance in what he told you to do. And so now God is using you, Amanda, to speak life and love into others. His presence is ever encompassing us constantly surrounding us, he surrounded you and your family. So please, right now, there's the woman listening, that is struggling, oh, my goodness. And she is going through trial and tragedy right now. And it may be somebody listening to this podcast knows of somebody struggling and in need to just know God's presence is with them. And we pray that you'll share these podcasts ladies, Amanda, can you speak a word of hope to that person? Amanda Jackman   I, I fully felt even on my heart this morning, that God allows suffering, to radically change our lives for him. That to realize that the comfortable Christianity, that we can't do it without him, we get comfortable, and we, you know, we make moves for our lives, but we really can't do it without him. I think we get comfortable and complacent in that. And, and wow, the valley is the place for you to reach up. And to allow for the most intimate moments for you to petition our Lord, for blessing for requests. In these moments, where you're in the valley, the world slows. And sometimes it stops for us. We were in a hospital for two weeks away from our other three wild children. And it stopped for us so we could just be in prayer with the Lord and petition him and feel the closeness in the presence of him. And I just hope to encourage you that if you just pause in the valley, and in your struggle to just reach up and to just pray and to just pray, the Lord's will be done in your life and and the valley is there for a reason. Even though we don't see it. We know he's working. Even though sometimes we don't feel it. We know that he's working and he's working on things for His glory and for His goodness. Kimberly Hobbs   Oh, that is such a good word, sweetheart, such a good word. And I have another scripture and I I just love sharing Scripture. God says ladies call on me when you are in trouble and I will rescue you. And you will give me glory. Psalm 50 Verse five, and wow, Amanda, God rescued you when you were in trouble. And he let you know his presence was ever surrounding you. And you are now giving him glory. And Walter's giving him glory, through his life through how you're raising your children, you and your husband. There's been so much learning through this time. And ladies, our prayers that you will just turn to God's word. It's filled filled with promises for you. There's over 3000 promises in His Word, His Word is truth and you can count on His Word and if he led you to a scripture in His Word, you better be sure that his promises are true. And that you can hold on to that. Okay, so we just encourage you go back to his word and we are just so grateful that you tuned in today and Amanda, I just want to thank you for sharing and encouraging Seeing the listener and thank you for just again, the story that you have been so willing to process and put together. And now I know that God is putting other things on your heart to do, such as writing, and, oh, we're just gonna keep praying that through that God continues to use your life, your testimony of him in your life, to help pour into others. And ladies, we pray that for you to God is working in you, giving you the desire. Do you understand that? That's a scripture verse, ladies, he's working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases Him. That's Philippians 213. So ladies, that's exactly what we do here. We want to encourage you, that we will come alongside of you, to help you to help you help others in the name of Jesus. And that's what we are called to do. All right, we need to show love, we need to show encouragement to one another. We need to come together as women running after Jesus's heart. So if you feel glad we asked you and invite you into women or leaders into this ministry, to be a deeper part of it, and use your gifting where God has placed you. God's using Amanda right where she is in Michigan. He is using other of our leaders in different parts of the world in different countries. But we're all coming together in the name of Jesus in a ministry that we're able to help others. So ladies, one of the ways we do that, and as Amanda and this is how I met her was because she opened the page as a voice of truth. And there is a beautiful, beautiful amount of encouragement for you in this magazine that contains scriptures that contains so much in the way that you can get this you can read it if you're outside of the United States, you can read it digitally for free. And you can go to www dot women world leaders.com. And if you are inside the United States, you can get the beautiful printed version for free mailed to your home to sign up on our website for that. And ladies, we also have other tools of writing. We have books available. And one of the books I thought that might be helpful to you would that women are sharing their stories this one is courageous steps of faith with God, all things are possible. Ladies, take that step of faith read some of these other stories of women that stepped out of their uncomfortable zone. And they stepped into being bold and faithful. Just like Amanda's spoke and prayed those bold prayers. Ladies, we encourage you to do so too. And here's a tool, courageous steps of faith. It's available on Amazon but we would prefer you get it through our women world leaders website as well. So many tools available for you here. So in close again, thank you Amanda for being our guest today. Thank you ladies for joining us. You're welcome on and we hope you come back again. So remember to register Lord ladies up on women moral leaders for our events. So check our website out for daily devotions. And all content today is copyrighted and cannot be used without express written consent. So we say goodbye to each of you. God bless you and have a wonderful week. Bye everybody.

I know I typed something into the Backpack studio notes, alas, I have nothing. It's the last long weekend of the summer. Because of that, it was a bit nuts at the store. I ran into Brandon, a colleague in biology. Isabelle is setting up an exhibition today. There will be an art talk next week, here is a link to Isa's micro gallery's instagram page. It's going to get warm, I think I'll watch Baa Baa Black Sheep and take notes while raging out in the backyard.

The Far Middle episode 93’s release date, March 1, coincides with the birthday of the late actor, Robert Conrad. Nick says as a kid he was obsessed with Conrad’s television series The Wild Wild West, as well as Conrad’s series, Baa Baa Black Sheep. Moving on to this episode’s dedication, Nick honors Mario Lemieux’s 1992-1993 season. It was a season by the Penguins’ Center that embodied athletic achievement, personal endurance, and one “you could make a movie about.” Lemieux’s perseverance that season is, “Motivation for all of us, as we continue to achieve in our endeavors, and as we face life’s unpredictable challenges,” says Nick. Nick stays on the ice as he moves from Penguin statistics to polar bear statistics. Referencing a study by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, Nick highlights that the world’s population of polar bears has risen from the 1960s to today, while at the same time, carbon dioxide emissions have also increased. It’s an inconvenient fact that runs counter to the beliefs of the Church of Climate parishioners. “The dynamic that we see, where an ideology insists on ignoring or suppressing facts and certainties that inconveniently counter its core beliefs, leads to quite damaging consequences, and they stretch beyond polar bears,” explains Nick as he next examines public education leadership not recognizing individual achievers in those education officials’ pursuit of “equal outcomes.” Nick argues that if our public education leaders are intent on holding back the recognition of high-performing students, not only is our public education system doomed, but so too is our future economic competitiveness, and further, the viability of the U.S. is in serious peril. Next up is a signature Far Middle trifecta connection, albeit one that illustrates the incompetence of government intervention under the cover of “saving the planet.” Electric vehicles are at the intersection of that trifecta connection. Nick delves into contradictory federal policies that mandate and subsidize electric vehicles, while on the other hand prohibit the domestic mining of the vital materials for EV battery production, and then at the same time the State Department pledges to help build foreign EV supply chains—effectively offshoring environmental destruction and human rights abuses. “As bad as it might be in the U.S. with our dysfunctional federal government, it could be much, much worse,” says Nick. “You don’t need to look beyond the Americas to see situations today that are indeed much worse.” This brings the conversation to Colombia where its new president, Gustavo Petro, is another faithful worshiper in the Church of Climate, an ex-guerilla, a 2023 Davos attendee, and at his side is a Minister of Mines and Energy who’s a professor and environmental activist. The path these two are prescribing for Colombia is about to make things much worse for the country’s residents, its economy, and its environmental health. Leaving Bogotá, Nick heads to New York City to close this episode, connecting to the film Gangs of New York and two of its stars, Daniel Day-Lewis and Liam Neeson.

You were newly engaged to Olly, and happily dancing as a Wiggle.EW: That's so long ago. It feels like a whole nother lifetime ago now.CL: Yeah. I think our chat was sort of mid-2021, so we were in the deep dark Sydney lockdown. A few things have changed since then.EW: Yeah, lots of things have changed, and it really does feel like a completely different chapter now.CL: I bet. Can you talk us through, I assume, an epic decision to leave The Wiggles? Can you talk us through the decision-making process and your head space leading up to that call?EW: I think through the lockdown, multiple times, I had a lot of time to focus on my thesis, which essentially was going on the whole time I was touring and performing. It's been part of my life for most of the time anyway. But because we weren't touring as much, I did have a little bit more time to sit and think, and reflect, and write. It really started to make sense for me that this particular part of research that I had been embarking on was needing to be finished. Probably 18 months ago when we spoke last time, it probably should have been finished then.CL: How long have you been doing your PhD?EW: I guess when you ask anyone that's doing a PhD, it's a bit more extended than what was originally planned. I'm doing my PhD through Macquarie University, so it's a bundle approach where you do a master's and then you do your PhD.CL: Oh, I see. Yeah.EW: The master's is helpful, yeah, because you're kind of doing a little bit of the PhD first.CL: So you sort of step up. Yeah. Okay.EW: Yeah. Currently, it's probably been about five years altogether, which probably isn't as long as some people do their thesis for. But it does feel like most of the research that we have been doing has been going on for over a decade anyway, so it has been a real conscious decision to put the line down now, which I've been told many times in the last month.CL: When is the line?EW: The line is at the end of March. I feel like I shouldn't say that in case I don't get there.CL: Oh, Dr. Watkins.EW: It feels positive yet. Yeah.CL: Okay, so lockdown happens. It's the first time that really you haven't toured with The Wiggles in almost really a decade. It was an extensive touring program that they had. Is it sort of like COVID gives you this moment to pause?EW: Absolutely. Of course, the pandemic is positive and negative. It has different effects on lots of different people. I really can't talk for everybody, but in terms of my situation and stopping traveling after 10 years constantly, I think my body just didn't know what to do with itself. For the first time, it was like, “I think we're on a body holiday.” That was actually something that I needed so much, but I didn't realize. Not just for a dancer and having a moment to stop, which kind of feels contradictory because you don't really ever want to stop your body, because then sometimes it can go into breakdown, which has happened to me as well, but at times it does release you and give you some sort of freedom to start again. I mean, now, 18 months on … Even just the original stopping during the pandemic, my body felt a sigh of relief, but now, 18 months on, it's completely different again.CL: Is it really? In what way?EW: Look, I'm probably not as fit as I used to be in terms of show fitness, but my body is definitely reacting differently because it's not under pressure of being in a car for a million hours, driving, on a plane every second day. There's definitely something different about … my body feels that it is not as restricted. That, in a way, I feel like I'm learning ballet back at square one. I'm training online with a beautiful teacher over Zoom. Which, we met through the pandemic, over Zoom. I've been training with her ever since. So ever since we started talking, that's when I met her.CL: Wow. So, what, you're taking weekly ballet classes?EW: Essentially, three times a week with her.CL: Wow.EW: Because I live now in the country, which is also very different to where we were 18 months ago in a really tiny apartment in Sydney. Because we were in the lockdown in there, that was a real time. Not for us as a couple, but you just get so cramped if your body can't move more than 10 meters and you can't go outside. I think now that we've moved south of Sydney and we have a little bit of a backyard, it's instantly completely different.CL: Okay, hang on. I feel like we are-EW: I know. Sorry.CL: … PhD. No, we are country moving. It's all the topics I want to hear about. But first of all, let's head back to that word retirement, from The Wiggles. I mean, it's an epic word to say out loud. When did it start creeping in?EW: The word itself?CL: Yeah. Just even to make that announcement or to think this could be a reality.EW: I guess I never thought about the word retirement, even though it was yelled at me over the street. I'd be taking the dogs for a walk and people were like, “Congratulations on your retirement.” I'm like, “Really?” I guess I understand the use of the term because I was stepping away from that particular role. But for me, it more felt like an internship that was really important to the way that I was forming my critical thinking and performance mode. I was like, “Okay, that's that chapter, but I think some of the research that we've been working on is really important, that we need to focus on now so that we can act on it in the future if we ever want to make children's content, or any content, really, for that sake, from this point forward.” So I understand that retirement, I guess it was a bit overused because I'm certainly probably too young to be retired, and couldn't retire anyway. We need to work. Certainly retiring from the role, but it more felt like a chapter, for me.CL: Yeah. Maybe that's a perception from the outside. Because your personality and the character Emma Wiggle, there was so much overlap, that perhaps from the outside, it was like, “How difficult must it have been to step away?” But maybe not so much from the inside.EW: No, definitely hard. Yeah. I think for me as a person and a personal journey, it's taken this long for me to separate myself from that personality as well. You don't realize how inextricably embroiled they become. Because we were so fortunate to bring our own characteristics and hobbies and interests to the role, it was a part of me, and it will always be a part of me. Absolutely.CL: Was it scary?EW: Yeah, I think it always is. We had lots of discussions, particularly with Olly and I. We ended up reflecting on a lot of people in the performance industry, particularly dancers who might have grown up only dancing and having that as their one goal. Because a dancer's life, in some schools of thought, is quite short, when they don't perform anymore, or when they have retired from the company, they're still so young. Because that becomes such a big part of their identity, yeah, how do you move on from that? I think for some people it can be quite debilitating.CL: Oh, absolutely. That passion that they've had, where do they go? Yeah.EW: Yeah. But actually, I think it might be the opposite. I just feel completely free, as in …CL: So good.EW: I feel like, now, there was … There's lots of different thoughts in my head about this next chapter. It's not just specifically about work or career, it's also about having time to spend with family, and having time to spend at home and sit down and have a cup of tea. Some of those things I forgot about over the 10 years. So being able to reconnect with friends that I hadn't seen for over a decade was also something that I never had time for. It's been an eye-opening experience. Also, that we now have time to talk to people. Just take a moment to connect with families, through our work as well, but also in the new neighborhood that we are a part of, and find out what people are really looking for in the world now.CL: Yeah, it's interesting that you say that about the retirement because I suppose you also had a second passion bubbling along in the background with your PhD. Some of the people I've spoken to who have found retirement so difficult is because ballet or dance or performance has been there.EW: Is everything.CL: Yeah, they're everything. And then when they stop or their body stops, where do they put that energy or that passion?EW: Absolutely. Emma Wiggle was everything to me. I didn't think about anything else but her. I was just infatuated with that experience and the journey, and always wanting to try and improve her. I had such a good chunk of time to really work on it, as well. It's not really normal for people to play one character for a decade.CL: Yeah, that's so true, isn't it?EW: Yeah. I had to really think about that as well. It's also not normal to be photographed in the same outfit for decades. I didn't realize that either. So, all of a sudden stepping away from that role, and then initially, obviously, focusing on the thesis. And then all of a sudden being approached to do other projects, and wearing different costumes and being a different … I just was like, “Wow, I didn't know that this was possible.”CL: You step away to do the PhD or to focus more on the PhD, does Emma Memma feature in that thought process?EW: Not at the time when I stepped away. We knew that … One of the outcomes of the research is to practically put in place what we've been researching.CL: Okay, can you summarize?EW: Yeah.CL: Just for your supervisor's approval. What is your PhD looking into?EW: My supervisor's going to be crying right now. I love her to pieces. She's the best thing since slice bread. For some reason I can't articulate it, which is probably the reason why it's still going. My PhD is about creative integration of dance, sign language, and film editing. Really, it's about a comparison between people who use sign language and people who might grow up as trained dancers, and what are the similar skills that they both have? Sometimes they are in our subconscious or they're not known, they become techniques of intuition. Essentially, we have really similar qualities, but there is not a lot of crossover between people who use sign language and dance, and not a lot of dancers who use sign language. But I feel like it's really silly, this is not in the PhD, the word silly, I feel like it's really strange that we don't have more crossover in those fields because we could really learn from each other. From a dancer's point of view … This is too long, obviously, for a clarification. For a dancer's point of view, if your career is very short, then you can apply your skills as visual detailed professionals to be learning sign language, and actually help in the workforce where we have such a lack currently right now in the deaf workplace.CL: As you say that, I'm thinking of those classic scenes from the ballet where the princess comes on. She invites the entire courtroom to dance. And then there's that classic arms above your head, spin the-EW: Yes, roly-poly.CL: Roly-poly.EW: Yeah, “Come and dance with us.”CL: “Come and dance with me.” And then there's the bow to say, “Thanks, everyone.” You're so right, they communicate through their use of their hands, their arms, their face. And yet, why is that not translated into skills with Auslan? Because actually-EW: Unbelievable.CL: Yeah. I mean, of course, I imagine people who are hearing impaired completely understand what those dancers are gesturing, but why wouldn't we integrate that?EW: One of the challenges is music. I think music becomes a really big barrier for both sides. People that are deaf and people that are hearing, I think people that are hearing, this is a generalization, will think that it's not possible for somebody who's deaf to join in. Whereas people that are deaf don't really … There are some schools of thought that music isn't part of the community, but that actually is not quite true for everybody. It's not really about music in the aural sense, but music is actually movement. Even if you were playing an instrument, you have to move your body to play the instrument. Essentially, my argument is that, “Music is movement, so let's get rid of the barrier, bring down the wall, and let's have a party because we know things that each other knows. We use them without thinking about it, so let's embrace it.”CL: Emma Memma is your new children's character that you have launched. Did she evolve out of the PhD as almost like a test case?EW: Yes, that's right. Yep.CL: That's your data collection, isn't it?EW: Yeah.CL: I love that.EW: Yes, Emma Memma is an outcome of the thesis, but it wasn't known to me at the time when I decided to leave. I just knew that I needed to do the thesis, essentially.CL: With Emma Memma, what are you hoping to bring to your audiences with her?EW: It's really interesting that we're even doing this interview at the time because I'm definitely writing the thesis now. I'm definitely a hundred pages in. It's-CL: This is a discussion, right?EW: I really honestly feel that this is just a piece of sand in a very big beach. I don't think that Emma Memma solves all the problems for integrating these visual elements. The reason why we chose this avenue is because, A, we have experience in children's entertainment, but B, also because it's the easiest platform to try a very simplistic test. With Emma Memma, some of our music, well most, is only based on two words and two signs. You can't really do a test without having such strict controls. Again, I'm talking about a test, but it's not really. We have given ourselves the boundary to create music with very little English, spoken English or sung English, so that we can make sure that the sign that's matching it is completely understood. And then we just go from there. So all of the songs on our first album … We only have two.CL: So Wednesday and Wombat, and then going on an airplane. Okay, I'm starting to see the theme here.EW: Yeah. There's some reviews like, “Ah, why is this so simple? It's so boring.” I completely understand that viewpoint, but that was actually our goal. We're like, “How simple do we need to go for everyone to understand this sign?”CL: Wow.EW: Essentially. Yeah.CL: I love that. That the songs are too simple, and you're like, “No, no, no, no, no. This is for the PhD.”EW: Yeah, this is a goal. What's interesting touring … we're not really touring, but performing in front of a group of people, which at most times was only about a hundred people at a time, just so that we could … I mean, for me, all I'm doing is watching people. In that space of time, which might have been an hour, we were doing a few songs and then meeting every single family that was in the room. For most of the time, it just shocked me how many people in the audience picked up the signs straight away without knowing the song. That's the key. Because all of these songs that we've put out in the last 12 months are not very … It's not widespread. A lot of people don't know them. It's not like singing “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” or “Baa Baa Black Sheep,” a nursery rhyme that is quite common. We were bringing completely new songs to an audience that some of the people obviously had listened because they had followed us, but some people, you think parents, particularly dads who … they just happened to be there, they obviously are not listening to me on social media, and that is fine. But in the space of the room, they could join in because they knew that it was only one or two signs, and then did it straight away. That's what I was watching the whole time. I was like, “Wow, everyone's copying.” It's only two signs. And then, for us, it's really about that movement or that dance choreography that's embedded in Emma Memma, or in any of the songs, is actually a sign. It's not just an irrelevant dance move. That's become very clear to me over the last 12 months.CL: Sorry. I remember in our last chat you had said … I think it was that you were hopeful that every person could just sign, “Do you need help?”EW: Yeah. We haven't done that song.CL: Yeah, that's the next album.EW: See how many words that is, do you … Yes.CL: You can't get to four yet.EW: Not yet.CL: Was it hard? I mean, you came into The Wiggles in an established brand, and then you sort of took it to far higher highs with Emma. Was it a tricky process or was it difficult to launch from scratch on your own?EW: I've actually just found it really interesting. I guess I don't really have any expectations of being some sort of a success, or worldwide success. It's not really about that for us. It really-CL: Kind of surprising to hear you say that because you're obviously so well loved around the world as Emma Wiggle. No thoughts that it might go well?EW: I mean, we'd love it to, but I think that's got to be dependent on whether the content is usable. Yeah, of course, we totally could have decided to just do children's entertainment for the sake of it, or work in any other region. I mean, what's interesting about the last year was that I worked on so many different projects that weren't even related to children's entertainment. I went back and taught at my high school. I was tutoring online. I've been doing sign language interpreting course. I was so lucky to do Lego Masters. None of that stuff is in the same region, really.CL: No. And then you did The Masked Singer. You've done Reef School.EW: Yeah, Reef School. Some really beautiful projects that that's also been alongside this. This really, it has been such an amazing, I guess it's almost like a workshop. Honestly, we've met some incredible families that I guess have been hungry for some content that provides accessibility within their family structure. We met a beautiful … we met lots of amazing families, but we met a family in Perth. The grandmother came with her grandchildren. I think she came with her daughter as well. She was signing to our deaf consultant who was there, Sue. Sue was horridly waving at me across the room. I came over, and then we were signing with the grandmother. The grandmother signed to me. She's like, “You have no idea, I've not been able to watch a show with my grandchild prior to this.” I was like, “Oh, wow, that means a lot.” I think that's something that hasn't left us, because now we've realized how important it is to embed sign language foundation in this movement. Because it should be. It just doesn't make sense to me why it …CL: Are you fully fluent in Auslan?EW: No, but I have … That was very quick, wasn't it? I don't know if you can … You'd have to be signing for decades, I think. I just know so many people who sign beautifully that I wouldn't be able to call myself fluent. But I have my diploma in Auslan, and I'm doing my interpreter's course. Essentially, one of the criteria is fluency, so I can have a conversation quite easily. All of our classes are in sign language for three hours at a time.CL: Wow.EW: So yes, we can converse in sign language, as we should be able to, but I still forget signs. I can't express myself sometimes. I think that's the frustration with being a student. Maybe ask me again in 10 years.CL: What actually sparked your initial interest in signing and Auslan as a non-deaf person?EW: Yeah, that's a good question. I've been asked that question a lot this year. Because mostly, people are exposed to somebody that is deaf through their family. 95% of deaf children are born to hearing parents. So for those parents, that's the first deaf person they might meet. The reality is quite weird, but there are lots of people who learn sign language just because they are interested in the culture and the community. I happened to have a friend at my primary school, we were probably about seven or eight, and her brothers are deaf. We would go to their house and play. That's my first exposure to sign language. I think I was just infatuated with it then. Because I was like, “Oh, what are they saying? What are they doing?” Watching my best friend sign to them, I was like, “Oh, can you show me?” so it just really snowballed from there.I tried to learn sign language through high school, and after high school and through touring. It was so difficult because you needed to be there in person. I'd enrolled so many times and wasn't able to complete the course because I then went away on tour. So through the pandemic, again, another really strange positive to this story, was that the course was changed to be online. Then I completed an assessment test and was really, I guess, quite lucky, because I'd also been continuing discussions with my deaf friends and my deaf network. So I didn't have to start from scratch. I was able to go to certificate three and four and do them at the same time. And then did my diploma. And then here we are in the interpreter's course.CL: It's so incredible what you're going to bring to that community, but also to the entertainment and the dance community. It's just so incredible because, actually, you're bringing something to both. Actually, it's funny that you just mentioned dance [inaudible 00:26:35]. As I was looking at all the things that you've done last year, and especially going on The Masked Singer, remember our chat about all your auditions singing? I just was actually … I had a wry smile, and I thought, “Now you're being really recognized as a singer.”EW: Okay, this is just … Okay, when they approached me to do The Masked Singer, I was like, “Great. I think I can do that in the mask because then I don't have to face anyone.” The whole time we were filming, I was nervous as ever, but I knew that nobody knew who I was. Well, that's what I thought, but obviously I was way too obvious. And that's okay. That's okay. I wasn't clever enough to change my voice because I was so stressed about the singing, and that's fine. But then when you take the mask off, the head off, I didn't remember that you had to sing. So when I was revealed and I took the mask off, having a chat with Osher, and like, “Everything's cool,” then they're like, “Okay, here's the microphone,” I think I did nearly wee my pants, and I wasn't really ready. Yeah, I wasn't ready.CL: So you thought the zombie head was just hiding your …EW: Absolutely.CL: But it was so cute because you had the turned out little first position.EW: So silly. Why did I do that? Why? I look back now, I'm like, “What was I doing? Why?”CL: Personal life. Obviously huge amounts of change as well since we last spoke. You've married Olly. Can you tell us about that day?EW: Well, it was pretty lovely. But as Olly and I are, we're pretty casual. The wedding was in very regional Victoria at a homestead that was quite close to Olly's grandfather, who was the eldest participant at our wedding. We wanted to make sure he could be there, so we were asking a lot of other people, friends and family, to travel past Warrnambool, which is very far away in our eyes, when you live in Sydney. Or Brisbane for that matter. It was just a lovely … It was just a really lovely day. It just felt like a garden lunch.CL: You've moved out of Sydney.EW: We have.CL: Good? What's it like?EW: It's so good. We've moved to the Southern Highlands to a place called Robertson. I guess I can probably name the town because it sounds like everybody knows that I live here now.CL: Yeah, I think it's fairly widely reported in the media, I've got to say.EW: It is such a beautiful part of the country. We moved down here for so many different reasons, but my parents are down here, my sister's down here. We're all a lot closer than we were before. Particularly after the tour, we wanted to make sure that we could see each other more often. And we love animals and nature, and we do have lots of animals at home. Yeah, it's basically a farm stay.CL: Wow. Was there any adjustment moving out of the city?EW: You don't realize how weird it is until you go back to the city. During 2022, I was driving to Sydney to do some filming and some work, The Masked Singer and the like.CL: Oh, yeah. Yeah.EW: Every time I drove into Sydney, my shoulders would raise up near my ears. I'm like, “Oh, the traffic and people.” I just became a grandmother instantly, within about two months. I was like, “There's so many people.” You just don't …CL: So noisy, no parking.EW: The Robertson post shop is basically the highlight of my life, where you can drive straight up to it and walk in and talk to the person and then drive away. There's no line. There's no issue. You get parking every time. You don't have to even pay for parking. It's completely different.CL: And then you said at the start when we were chatting that you thought your body had gone through a sort of … Did you say breakdown since …EW: Oh, as in it had a break. My body was happy. But then it also, I think as dancers have, when you're not doing as much as you used to do physically, your body starts to go into a bit of … I can't describe it. I've basically realized that my feet strength and some of my bones were starting to have a moment. I do now have arthritis in one of my feet.CL: Do you?EW: It's actually starting to heal, surprisingly. So I think it was just a moment where it was like, “We need to stop. Now we're going to turn into a snowman, and now we're okay.”CL: Also, you were touring eight plus months a year and performing every day. I mean, there's just no way you can even maintain any training regime.EW: You can't.CL: You can't maintain.EW: You actually can't.CL: No.EW: No, it's just not possible. But obviously, now, with a different training regime, not doing as much physical things that I was doing before, but different things that are helping my body stay at least flexible and strong, my body's so different. My body's moving better now than it was before.CL: Really?EW: And I'm just not moving it as much as I used to.CL: Wow. And the endometriosis?EW: Well, that's the same thing. It's just unbelievable.CL: Is it really?EW: I must have had so much stress on my body, not just physically doing things, but I think that the traveling was really knocking my body around. Of which I kind of knew, but didn't really know. It was only sometimes in the last year when I'd catch a plane. I haven't really been on a plane that much in the last 12 months. And then getting off the plane and my body absolutely going into meltdown.CL: Really?EW: Like, “Wow, okay. It really doesn't like a plane.” So now I know that it doesn't like a plane.CL: Right. That extended sitting and just everything that comes with that.EW: I think it's the pressure. I think it's the cabin pressure. Yeah. So now, again, there's more controls. Now I can actually work out what the problem … what setting it off all the time.CL: You've got that time to watch how your body responds.EW: You've got that time to have a moment after a plane. Whereas before, I'd get off the plane, and then instantly be on stage. My body would be like, “Help, help, help, help.”CL: Wow.EW: But now I know what's going on. Obviously, I've got on a plane this year. It's okay. You just have to manage it and know. You just have to be nice to yourself.CL: Yeah. I often thought of that when the Emma Memma costume launched. I remember you saying when … Emma Wiggles costume, none of us knew that you had endometriosis. And I don't think you knew.EW: No.CL: So just managing that behind the scenes in a career that is so performance based.EW: Yeah. My costume is a lot cooler now. It's just a whole different material.CL: Perfect. Breathable.EW: It's amazing. Yeah. Completely different. Yeah.CL: Amazing. What are your hopes for this year?EW: Oh, there's so many hopes. I mean, the first hope is submitting the thesis.CL: Dr. Watkins. I love it.EW: Oh, I can't even think about it. I just know that it's going to come back with revisions. That's okay. You just have to accept that. It's not about that. It's just about doing a good job in terms of presenting the research. So that hopefully we can build on it in the future, or it helps other people acquire some other skills. But for Emma Memma, we're hoping to film our very first TV series, as in a long-form TV series. So we've been in lots of different discussions with different parties across the world. It's just been trying to make the right decision about who we might want to partner with, that's going to understand the nuances of sign languages around the world as well. We want to make sure that we partner with the right people.CL: Because around the world, they don't speak Auslan. Auslan is …EW: Auslan is only used in Australia. There are some similarities with New Zealand sign language and British sign language. But for most of it, that's the beauty about sign language because the culture is embedded in the language. You can see the different culture when you watch different sign languages across the world. So that's really important for us. But also, we are very, very fortunate. We're in a pre-literal audience space where we can use iconic shapes as well, gestures, mime, dance. So that mixture and that balance is what we're trying to write now into proper video scripts to prepare us for a TV series. Yeah.CL: Wow. Any other post-doctoral …EW: What do you do with it? I mean, again, all of the research that's part of the PhD is really informing us about Emma Memma, but also other projects. We have been very fortunate, again, to be approached to do lots of different creative collaborations. As soon as I receive any kind of email, you just look at it straight away and you're like, “Is this accessible to my friend?” And then that gives us a really good indication about whether we should choose it or not as well. I wouldn't want to do anything that … For example, Sue, my friend, I wouldn't want to do anything that she couldn't have access to as well. That's really important for me.CL: Wow. This is a strange question to perhaps end with, but you are just such a delight. Every time I've spoken with you, had any interaction, the way that you must have to hold yourself when you're in public because children recognize you. Does Emma Watkins ever have a moment of angst? Do you get cranky, Emma?EW: I really only get upset if my animals are sick. I literally go to the goats every morning. If one of them's having a moment, I come, I'm like, “Why are they sick?” That's really my only moment of frustration is having animals that are sick when I don't know what's gone wrong.CL: Wow. Because you just seem to have such a positive outlook on life. You have such … it would seem, such beautiful relationships with everyone that you deal with. It's just, what an asset to all the communities that you work with.EW: Thank you. I guess we can't really complain. We're very lucky.CL: Emma Watkins, thank you so much. I can't wait to see what you do this year. Just all the best for you and Olly as well.EW: Thank you so much.CL: If you'd like to hear more about Emma's life, you can find our full conversation in the show notes.

Who put the rock-a-bye-baby up in the tree branch, and why? Seems irresponsible. When it was raining and pouring, why didn't the old man get out of bed after bumping his head? Did he die? What is Ring Around the Rosie really about? The bubonic plague? Why are we singing to small children about cutting the tails off of three blind mice? Who wrote all the strange, often dark, mostly weird old nursery rhymes kids have been memorizing for centuries? We look into all of this and more today. Such a fun topic! We examine why nursery rhymes often appear dark and why that may have helped keep them popular. We look into the lore that surrounds a lot of popular old rhymes to try to separate origin fact from origin fiction. Comedic theory, mnemonic devices such as acoustic encoding, and more - all explored as I get both scientific and silly today, finally getting to know many classic nursery rhymes many of us have memorized but few actually understand. If you like to donate to the Bad Magic Giving Tree this year, please to amazon.com, purchase a gift card, and when you fill in the box for "To", enter the following email address: givingtree@badmagicproductions.com If you'd like to be the recipient of a donation, please email us why you could use a helping hand to get presents for your children this holiday season. The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview  Larry Manetti and Nancy Manetti. RN Digital Talk Radio announced today that the “Magnum, P.I.” star and his wife will host “The Lounge with Larry and Nancy Manetti.” The one-hour talk show premieres on Tuesday, June 6 on the network's CRN 1 channel.  “The Lounge with Larry and Nancy Manetti” will also be available for download and air on the Genesis Communications Network (GCN). Listeners are encouraged to check local listings or visit CRNTalk.com for show dates and times. Larry Manetti is perhaps most famous for his starring turn alongside Tom Selleck in the long running hit “Magnum, P.I.”  He portrayed “Orville ‘Rick' Wright,” a playboy who managed an exclusive club – and also happened to be a weaponry expert.   He was series regular on “Baa Baa Black Sheep” (also known as “Black Sheep Squadron”) – which also starred fellow CRN personality Robert Conrad. Manetti has recurred in more than a dozen other television series, including his most recent turn as “Nicky 'The Kid' Demarco” on the CBS hit “Hawaii Five-0.” Manetti is the author of “Aloha Magnum,” the first-ever book about “Magnum, P.I.” The tome also chronicles Manetti's experience as a restaurateur, his work with Frank Sinatra – and how he “annoyed Elvis Presley and helped launch Michelle Pfeiffer's career.” Nancy Manetti has acted in over two dozen television series. She recurred on “Magnum, P.I.” and “Buck Rogers in the 25th Century.”
