Pillars of billowing smoke and ash turned the sky orange and blocked out the sun above Greece's second-largest island Sunday as a days-old wildfire devoured pristine forests and encroached on villages, triggering more evacuation alerts. The fire on Evia, an island of forested mountains and canyons laced with small coves of crystalline water, began Aug. 3 and cut across the popular summer destination from coast to coast as it burned out of control. Scores of homes and businesses have been destroyed and thousands of residents and tourists have fled, many escaping the flames via flotillas that even operated in the dark of night. The blaze is the most severe of dozens that broke out in the wake of Greece's most protracted heat wave in three decades, which sent temperatures soaring to 45 degrees Celsius (113 F) for days, creating bone-dry conditions.“It's already too late, the area has been destroyed,” Giannis Kontzias, mayor of the northern Evia municipality of Istiaia, lamented on Greece's Open TV. He was one of several local officials and residents who took to Greek TV networks to appeal for more firefighting help, particularly from water-dropping planes and helicopters.Residents of nearby villages had been urged to head to Istiaia, a town of 7,000 that firefighters battled to save overnight. In dramatic scenes Sunday afternoon, fast-moving flames encroached on the seaside village of Pefki on the island's northern coast, burning trees on the fringes and entering the houses' yards. At least one house was on fire. Panicked residents raced with water tanks, hoses and branches in a seemingly futile effort to extinguish the flames.Acrid, choking smoke hung in the orange-grey air, turning the day into an apocalyptic twilight as people headed towards Pefki's pebble beach, dragging suitcases, clutching pets and helping elderly relatives.Around 350 people had boarded the ferry even before the flames reached the village, the coast guard said, while 23 others were rescued from other beaches in northern Evia. A ferry, coast guard patrol boats, navy vessels and other boats were on standby to evacuate residents.Evacuation orders were issued Sunday for four villages in northern Evia, including Pefki, but many residents refused to leave, hoping to save their properties. In nearby Gouves, towering flames leaped from the treetops, devouring the pine forest leading to the village. Some residents remained in the picturesque mountain village, dousing homes with water from garden hoses in a last-ditch effort to save them. Others used bulldozers to raze trees and bushes, hoping to create rudimentary firebreaks.Civil Protection chief Nikos Hardalias said the Evia fire was burning on two fronts, one to the north and one to the south. He said the conditions there were particularly tough for the water-dropping planes and helicopters, whose pilots faced “great danger" with limited visibility and air turbulence.“We have before us one more difficult afternoon, one more difficult night,” Hardalias said. “All the forces that have been fighting a difficult battle all these days will continue operating with unabated intensity, with the same self-sacrifice.”But many have decried government efforts, citing what they saw as a lack of firefighting forces or planes or delays in their arrival.“The atmosphere was suffocating, although I was away from the fire. There was ash and smoke everywhere,” said Christina Tsatou, who had been in the seaside village of Agios Georgios. "It is very sad that they did not send help in the first days and they left the island burning. It was unfair and many people have lost their property, their livelihoods.”The wildfires have stretched Greece's firefighting capabilities to the limit, and the government has appealed for help from abroad. More than 20 countries in Europe and the Mideast have responded, sending planes, helicopters, vehicles and manpower.Overnight, the Greek coast guard and ferries evacuated 83 people fr...

It's ever changing, so diverse. It's very difficult for AI to really understand how to develop culture in a way that actually will be sustainable to a business independent of human intervention.” “Humans exist through storytelling, and our world is shifting all the time. And we're in the world first before the machines are.” “The barriers to entry are lower so people who had been historically excluded can now make their own TV shows and distribute them.” “The beauty of television and the Internet is that it's easily accessible to anyone at almost any moment these days, and AR and VR and anything that you might lay on top of that still seems not quite there yet.”   Who You'll Hear Dirk Knemeyer, Social Futurist and Producer of Creative Next (@dknemeyer) Jonathan Follett, Writer, Electronic Musician, Emerging Tech Researcher and Producer of Creative Next (@jonfollett) AJ Christian, Author of Open TV and Assistant Professor of Communication Studies at Northwestern University (@drajchristian)   Join The Conversation Website & Newsletter: www.creativenext.org Twitter: @GoCreativeNext Facebook: /GoCreativeNext Instagram: @GoCreativeNext   Sponsors GoInvo, A design practice dedicated to innovation in healthcare whose clients are as varied as AstraZeneca, 3M Health Information Services, and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. www.goinvo.com  Design Museum Foundation, A new kind of museum, they believe design can change the world. After the success of the Emmy-nominated web series Brown Girls, Fatimah Asghar and Sam Bailey return to Chicago for the world premiere of another collaboration: Damaged Goods. The two were executive producers for the new web series, which follows the lives of four young adults of color grappling with the loss of their identity while living in Chicago. The show was written by Vincent Martell, Zac Payne and KB Woodson. Damaged Goods is part of new cycle of pilots and series presented by Open Television, a Chicago-based web platform for local artists. Asghar and Bailey join Morning Shift to talk about their experience working on the new show, their latest projects in Chicago and LA, and the importance of representation and intersectionality in media and the arts. What kind of show is Damaged Goods and what was it like producing it?Sam Bailey: It’s really just kind of this like love letter to black and brown queer communities in Chicago, and it’s a community that we feel really attached to and are a part of and active in. So they made a show that kind of explores all of these different relationships and friendships and chosen family between these four roommates. And we got brought onto it early last year as creative EPs to help guide them as they were going through the web series process. On the importance of authentic, intersectional storytellingFatimah Asghar: I think it’s really important for people of color to just have really nuanced humanities, and I think that’s something that Vince and Zac and KB really, really wanted to do — to show the struggles that exist in our communities in a very real way ... the writers wanted to convey a sense of realness and the authenticity when it came to these characters, which means not shying away from some of these darker topics.Odette Yousef: These shows touch on intersectionality of multiple identities, as did Brown Girls … but in such an edgy and raw kind of way. What’s your take on why that’s the right approach?Bailey: I don’t know if there’s a right or wrong approach, I just think it’s true to our aesthetics … we want to do something that feels very real but also has a bit of surrealism and play, because we’re still experimenting as artists. So not only are we telling this story about a bunch of these different identities, but I also want to give these creators room to play in their filmmaking. So I think that’s the reason why it’s raw and edgy, because it is 100 percent them … and if you stay true to it, there’s a level of authenticity that can’t be matched in Hollywood.Breaking boundaries, reaching audiences through web seriesAsghar: I think that the idea of a web series and the digital platform offered a sense of freedom. It was a way in which we didn’t have to ask permission for the stories we were telling … and really, it was because there was no other way. It was like we wanted to make content, we wanted to connect with our audiences, we wanted to get that out here. And when we made Brown Girls, there was no kind of concept of we are making this in the hopes that Hollywood see it. We were making it in the hopes that our communities would see it. And so, I think that the priority has just been different. It’s not been a thing of like, we’re using the digital space to get into Hollywood. It’s been, we’re using the digital space to be its own platform and its own sense of authorship and ownership. On their latest works in Chicago and LABailey: Fati has another book out, Halal If You Hear Me, which I love. And I think we're trying to figure out the balance between being in LA and and being in Chicago and creating more 'mainstream' work and creating our independent work, which is very difficult. But it seems like every time I do, I lean more into the independent stuff ... so, I think there's a lot of projects in the making right now and hopefully we'll be able to share that with you guys real soon. This interview has been edited for brevity and clarity by Stephanie Kim. If you grew up with network TV like we did (or basic cable, if you were lucky), you might find the current media landscape overwhelming — not just what shows to watch, but what platforms to access. The multiple ways it's now possible to consume and produce entertainment has made the industry more accessible to creators working outside the traditional network system, and a happy byproduct is more people of color, queer people, and trans people telling their own stories. That's what you'll find on Open TV,  a Chicago-based platform for queer and intersectional television. This week we meet Open TV founder Dr. Aymar Jean Christian, who's also an assistant professor of communication at Northwestern University. Christian started the platform as a research project two years ago and joins us to talk about how they focus on centering marginalized artists, and some of the original work they've produced so far.
