We return with a true pioneer in the representation of women in comics innovating several genres within the formerly male dominated industry. Barbara Slate is a trailblazer for women in comics. She's a sought-after speaker, teacher, and author of You Can Do a Graphic Novel, endorsed by Stan Lee and widely used in classrooms. Her first character, Ms. Liz, appeared on greeting cards, in Cosmopolitan, and on NBC's Today Show. She created Angel Love for DC, Yuppies from Hell and Sweet XVI for Marvel, and adapted Beauty and the Beast, Pocahontas, and Barbie. She also wrote over 100 Betty and Veronica stories. Her 2012 graphic novel, Getting Married and Other Mistakes, explored modern relationships. Her work has been exhibited widely and featured in The New York Times and A Century of Women Cartoonists. Barbara discusses making Betty and Veronica about the characters and not Archie, the blow-back from featuring real word issues in Angel Love and how she inadvertently changed the greeting card industry with Ms. Liz!Support the show
Barbara Slate has done it all in her over four decades in the industry. Not only is she one of the few female artists who has created, written, and drawn comics for both Marvel and DC, but her textbook, You Can Do a Graphic Novel, is a pioneering how-to for the comics field. She started in the mid-1970s with the comic strip Ms. Liz, which was featured in greeting cards and Cosmopolitan magazine. Another highlight was creating Angel Love for DC, a grown-up series for teens. Barbara has also written extensively for Archie Comics, including more than 100 Betty and Veronica stories. Her graphic novel work includes Yuppies From Hell and Getting Married and Other Mistakes. When not creating, teaching or speaking, you can find Barbara on her site, barbaraslate.com, on Instagram @barbara_slate, or on X @barbaraslate.The Profitable CreativeHey, Creative! What do you get when you mix faith, family, and small towns? Well with Jessica Kate's latest release, Drive You Crazy, you get a hilarious "loathe to love" romcom in her new Amity Creek series! Listen in to learn more! note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. Jessica Kate, author of A Girl's Guide to the Outback and Love and Other Mistakes, has a fun new small-town romcom series set in Washington State. I mean, she had me at "romcom" but then when she says it kicks off when a guy our heroine calls Dracula drops a tree on her car, I was 100% all in. Can you blame me? But while Amity Creek only has one full-length novel (just released), there are a few short novels/stories as well. Not only that, but she's just released Three Aussie Kisses and A New Year's Kiss as well! Drive You Crazy by Jessica Kate Fans of Emily Henry and Gilmore Girls will adore this swoon-worthy enemies-to-love romance about how faith, family and small towns are never as simple as they seem. Bubbly newspaper editor Ashley Anderson is ecstatic to finally call this small town in Washington State 'home'—until she accidentally angers her newspaper's biggest advertisers, and they boycott. Her neighbor Justin has the family connections to get the town back on her side—but asking for help from the man she's nicknamed 'Dracula' is a last resort. Living next door, rebel-with-a-cause teacher Justin Hastings can't escape Amity Creek fast enough. But when a good deed goes awry, it's his fault that Ashley's car is out of action, and they're forced to carpool until he can make things right. Thrust into one another's daily lives, Ashley and Justin learn that little is black-and-white—not small-town life, not family, and not each other. But there's a fork in the road, and it seems God has these two destined for separate paths. Can the road less traveled ever lead them back to love? Don't miss the chance to immerse yourself in this must-read inspirational romance about the complexities—and the beauty—of true love in all its forms. Learn more about Jessica Kate on her WEBSITE. Alexa Martin joins Zibby to discuss her latest novel, Mom Jeans and Other Mistakes, which is also her first standalone project. The two also talk about the conversations around race Alexa seeks to start with her books, notably about the disparities in how Black mothers are treated, and how her fiction has offered her a space to work through grief she has endured in her personal life.Purchase on Amazon or Bookshop.Amazon: https://amzn.to/3xGIQPnBookshop: https://bit.ly/2ZBWZ1HSubscribe to Zibby's weekly newsletter here. Steph chats with Comedian, Actor, Presenter AND Author (phew) Ellie Taylor about her career. She's come a long way since playing Nancy in Oliver aged 17 and they discuss the terror/joy of Stand Up Comedy and some of Ellie's recent projects including what it's like to be in the multi-award winning show Ted Lasso (Emmys! She reassures ‘It's okay to like your child but fucking hate the parenting bit sometimes and to find the newborn days awful…you can hold these two thoughts in your head' before reassuring new mums that it gets easier. Steph and Ellie finish by discussing therapy and learning to be gentler with yourself, in a very grown up manner. Raw, candid and hilarious, Ellie Taylor's My Child and Other Mistakes is the funny truth about motherhood and all its grisly delights. My Child and Other Mistakes is the honest lowdown on Motherhood and all its grisly delights, asking the questions no one wants to admit to asking themselves - do I want a child? Do I have a favourite? Do I wish I hadn't had one and spent the money on a kitchen island instead? Stand-up comic, broadcaster and actress Ellie Taylor is relatable, clever and interested in how women can have it all. Her honest, hilarious and moving account of the whys and hows of having a baby makes perfect listening for expectant mothers and fathers everywhere, as well as those who've been there, done that, and wonder how on earth they did. In this very funny book she writes candidly about her own personal experience exploring the decision to have a baby when she doesn't even like them, the importance of cheese during pregnancy, why she took hair straighteners to the labour ward, plus the apocalyptic newborn days, childcare, work and the inevitable impact on life and love and most importantly, her breasts.

Jessica Kate joins NYT bestselling author Rachel Hauck and award winning romance authors Melissa Tagg and Rachel McMillan to celebrate the launch of Jessica's debut romantic comedy, Love and Other Mistakes! Jessica Kate’s hilarious, romantic debut novel proves that love comes in God’s own time. Natalie Groves once had big dreams. But soon after her fiancé, Jeremy Walters, inexplicably broke off their engagement and left town, her father was diagnosed with cancer. Now tasked with keeping her family afloat, Natalie’s grand plans have evaporated . . . and God feels very far away. Fast-forward seven years, and Jeremy is back in Charlottesville with an infant son and years of regrets. When his niece, Lili, lands on his doorstep in need of a place to stay, Jeremy needs help—and fast. An internship opening finally presents Natalie a chance at her dream job, but she needs a second income to work around it—and the only offer available is Jeremy’s. They could be the solutions to one another’s problems, provided they don’t kill each other in the process. When they join forces, sparks fly. But they both know there’s a thin line between love and hate . . . and that love will turn out to be the best decision—or the biggest mistake—of all. “A stunning debut . . . This tale of love and redemption will stay with you long after you've closed the book. A must-read.” —Rachel Hauck, New York Times bestselling author of The Wedding Dress “Witty. Charming. Heartfelt. I could go on and on about Jessica Kate’s debut novel. From its highly relatable characters to its pitch-perfect dialogue, Love and Other Mistakes is a delightful, romantic read filled with just the right amount of sass. I lost count of the number of times I laughed out loud as I watched Natalie and Jem navigate their relationships, careers, and faith. Definitely one of the most enjoyable books I've read lately, and I can't wait to see what’s next from Jessica Kate!” —Melissa Tagg, Carol Award–winning author of Now and Then and Always and the Walker Family series “Love and Other Mistakes wraps a poignant and warm look at relationships within a smart, sly, and knowing comedic voice. Readers of Sally Thorne and Bethany Turner will be immediately at home with Natalie: an all-too-real heroine who balances whip-smart agency with an endearing vulnerability and whose intersection with long-lost Jeremy helps her forge a path to confidence and discover the woman she was always meant to be. Kate’s unputdownable debut recognizes that all human relationships—familial, friendship, romantic—are worth the keen eye and clever insight of her talented pen.” —Rachel McMillan, author of the Van Buren and DeLuca Mysteries “If you’re looking for a story with sass on top of style, or a fresh voice pumped full of fun, you need to read Love and Other Mistakes. Then after you’ve enjoyed this—and I’m confident you will—make a date with whatever this exciting new author writes next!” —David Rawlings, author of The Baggage Handler
Kind of remarkable that every season doesn't have a Vegas episode, when you really think about it... This week, we talk about how the producers are clearly gaslighting us with Colton's storyline, wonder where all the helicopters have gone and why they've been replaced with awkward songwriting dates, marvel at Chris' emotional meltdown, and say a fond farewell to the silliest Bachelorette feud in recent memory. Also, a weird sidebar about Jeff's grudges from middle school band camp! Tunes, as always, courtesy Ponchos From Peru, whose album "Friendship and Other Mistakes", which our theme music was deleted from, can be found on iTunes... ... and so can we! Or I guess it's called Apple Podcasts now, but you get the idea. Rate and review us there when you have a minute - thanks!
This week, we watch a lovely date between a lovely lady and a guy that not even the camera knows is a jerk, sample the sounds of modern country, and Joe breaks down in precise detail one of the show's most excruciating self-destruction sequences ever while Jeff interjects some sports jargon that he only 70% understands but has heard an awful lot. Hey, we're on iTunes, or Apple Podcasts, or whatever it's called these days. Go on there to rate and review us, and watch us rocket up the charts! We'll still remember you when we're in the big leagues, we promise. Music, as always, is "Dummies," an outtake from the album Friendship and Other Mistakes by Ponchos From Peru, which you can find on the usual digital and streaming outlets (Have we mentioned this is Jeff's wife's band from college? Because it is, and they're great).
We're back! After a week's hiatus from the podcast studio/guest bedroom, we return to tackle the monumental task of bringing you up to speed on two weeks and four hours of The Bachelorette. ... it's actually not that monumental a task. They should really edit that show more concisely! But we get into it all - the relay races, the sporting contests, the one on one dates, and of course, the greatest Dude Feud in show history, David and Jordan. Then things get real heavy as we contemplate how a major broadcast network failed to notice that one of our contestants had pending assault charges, but we pull out of that tailspin and stick the landing for you, the listener! Theme music, once again, is the terrific "Dummy", an unused track from the band Ponchos From Peru and their album "Friendship and Other Mistakes", which you can find on iTunes and your streaming services. And hey! We're on iTunes now too (wild, huh?), so maybe leave us a review? Thanks!

Barbara Slate is the author of more than 300 comic books and graphic novels. She created, wrote and drew Angel Love for DC Comics, and Yuppies from Hell and Sweet XVI for Marvel. Her first character , Ms Liz, has appeared on millions of greeting cards, in magazines, and on the Today Show; in addition, she wrote the Disney comic classics Beauty and the Beast and Pocahontas, plus more than 60 issues of Mattel's Barbie (winner of the Parent's Choice Award two years in a row), and more than 100 Betty and Veronica stories for Archie Comics. She is the author of You Can Do a Graphic Novel, "a guide to creating graphic novels - presented in the form of a graphic novel - from a veteran in the field." Her new semi-autobiographical graphic novel, Getting Married and Other Mistakes (2012) has been called 'charming and empowering'. In it, a newly divorced narrator encounters many of the social challenges that modern women must face, while undertaking a complicated journey toward finding her inner voice. I met with Slate at her home in the Hudson Valley recently to talk about all of this, and more.
