During the events of the war with Hybern, Nesta experienced a lot of difficult things that still haunt her. Hybern's attempted manipulation of her through her father, Hybern's murder of her father, and Hybern's attempt to use Cassian to manipulate her all led her to conclude that caring about people is bad news. Anyone she cares about could be used against her. She has disregarded what was essentially a declaration of love from Cassian as he was dying and is engaging in destructive behaviors like drinking and sleeping around in an attempt to forget. Her family has had it and gives her an ultimatum. She either moves up to the House of the Wind and trains with Cassian or she goes back to mortal lands alone. It's obvious to us that Cassian has always had some kind of attraction toward Nesta, but while he's training her, he's also trying to deal with the aftermath of the war. The wall doesn't exist anymore, and there are some that would attempt to claim mortal lands for themselves. He is acting as a go-between so that Eris can communicate with the inner circle of the Night Court. How comfortable were we with the spice level in this book? Jen talks about reading Twilight as a middle school teacher, and Sarah talks about never reading it at all…until now. Within, we'll talk about characters feeling big feelings, about how Twilight inspired romance novelists across the board, about third acts that go hard, and about how Alice is unquestionably the best character in the whole thing. Christina Hobbs and Lauren Billings, the besties and writing duo who make readers' smiles and hearts grow with every book published under the pen name Christina Lauren, return to the podcast to talk with Olivia about this summer's release. THE TRUE LOVE EXPERIMENT is a stand alone novel focused on “Fizzy” aka Felicity Chen, who readers first met in their instant bestseller THE SOULMATE EQUATION. “No two people complete each other, it is who is perfect for our heroine or our hero,” says Christina, and in this book it's the divorced dad/documentary producer Conner who is clearly meant for Fizzy. The way the relationship unfolds slowly, Lauren explains, is what makes it good. “What more fun can you imagine than taking that person who thinks she knows everything about love and showing her that maybe that's not actually true… they really became friends,” she says. THE TRUE LOVE EXPERIMENT is out May 16, 2023 from Gallery Books. For more on the writers and their book tour, visit https://christinalaurenbooks.com/

Welcome to #Millennial, the home of pretend adulting and real talk! We are joined this week by Christine Riccio and Natasha Polis from Those Forking Fangirls to discuss the significant uptick in interest (and sales) of literary romance and YA novels. Today's conversation was inspired by this NPR article:From meet-cutes to happy endings, romance readers feel the love as sales heat up. Christine and Natasha help us dig in on the pipeline from Young Adult to Romance, how the genres somewhat overlap, and how the culture has shifted to make open enjoyment of the Romance genre more socially accepted. Might some of the shifts in cover art portrayals have made the genre more comfortable and accessible to readers? Are there any cases where the cute, cartoony covers fail to communicate the spicy, smutty passages between the covers? Fan Fiction seems to have played a major role in these developments, with more people participating in online fan spaces to create new content. There are even recent examples of very successful fan fic authors going on to become published, like Christina Lauren, EL James, Alice Clayton, and Ali Hazelwood. Is there any direct correlation between the rise in interest for romance novels as a genre and the uptick in romance-based reality TV shows? What sort of escapism do they provide? What recommendations do Christine and Natasha have for current romance readers, or those hoping to get started? "From Blood and Ash" by Jennifer L Aremntrout, "Spoiler Alert" by Olivia Dade, "A Court of Silver Flames" by Sarah J Maas, "Part of Your World" by Abby Jimenez, "Verity" by Colleen Hoover, "Anna & the French Kiss" by Stephanie Perkins, "The Soulmate Equation" by Christina Lauren, "The Hating Game" by Sally Thorne, "A Court of Thorns and Roses" by Sarah J. Maas. And of COURSE - "Twilight" by Stephenie Meyer. This week's recommendations are all over the map: Andrew's shameless plug to use his Visible by Verizon referral code to get $20 off your first month, "Sons of the Forest" (Laura), 'Daisy Jones & The Six' on Prime Video (Pam), "Ninth House" (Christine), and "Sanditon" on Masterpiece airing 3/19/23 (Natasha). And in this week's installment of After Dark, available on Patreon: Last week we revealed all the bad things we did as kids and teens, but this week we're revealing the much more scandalous escapades our parents thought we were into. Weed orgies, illicit drug use on a church playground, underage sex, and all sorts of really interesting things none of us were actually cool enough to be doing.

When we were brainstorming who we could invite to be our first author interview, we had a short list of criteria: We wanted an Irish author, someone who had a book recently released, and someone who we could have a bit of craic with and this lady came straight to mind. Catherine Walsh is the new queen of contemporary Romance in Ireland (and elsewhere if the reviews are anything to go by!) and one of the funnest accounts to follow on Bookstagram. Fun aside, Catherine raises some really excellent points about the lack of visibility and respect for Romance as a genre and we suspect you might think a bit differently about it after you've heard her speak… Both the author and her books have been an absolute joy to get to know and we hope you love the episode as much as we do. I finally found my reading groove again in May and when I say we have books to talk about…WE HAVE *BOOKS* TO TALK ABOUT. The month started strong with Always You the third book in the Samantha Young Adair family series, but then got shaky with probably the worst book I've ever read in Bad Luck Bridesmaid (it wasn't the writing style, it was just the main character and her storyline). Samantha saved the day again with a quick 8 hour read of Hero (what I consider her spiciest book I've ever read of hers) and then there was Emily Henry's Book Lovers. You remember my thoughts last year on PWMOV and the redemption in Beach Read. Book Lovers was my litmus test for Emily: if I liked it I'd read her next book, but if I didn't I probably wouldn't read any more. Well, not that she needed my test, but she went and wrote the best book I've ever read. If you don't love Book Lovers, I don't know what to tell you. Move over River Nicolas from The Soulmate Equation, hello Charlie Lastra. Finishing the month I read a new author for me, Sara Desai with her third book, The Singles Table and when I say steam meets spice. It was the best of both worlds. Get full reviews on all that plus a little more now in the May wrap-up. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Raised by her grandparents—who now help raise her seven-year-old daughter, Juno—Jess has been left behind too often to feel comfortable letting anyone in. After all, her father's never been around, her hard-partying mother disappeared when she was six, and her ex decided he wasn't “father material” before Juno was even born. Jess holds her loved ones close, but working constantly to stay afloat is hard...and lonely. What's popping in Vell's World consist of Michael K. Williams found dead in New York apartment, Tupac BMW goes for sale, Tom Brady and the defending Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers beat the Dallas Cowboys, and more. We are officially halfway through the year and WOW where is the time going? There was a full slate of Hallmark movies to get into - but can we first talk about how they axed June Weddings this year and went straight to Summer Nights?! From meh You Had Me At Aloha, to the downright bizarre The Baker's Son, they pulled it together with a Galavant cast for Her Pen Pal before finishing strong with Sand Dollar Cove featuring Chad Michael Murray and Aly from Aly and AJ. Then it was a brief June book club addition since there was already a full podcast all about The Soulmate Equation by Christina Lauren and a look ahead to And Now You're Back from my absolute favorite author, Jill Mansell. Finishing the podcast I got into the other books I read in June: from what I liked the least My Favorite Half-Night Stand by Christina Lauren and People We Meet On Vacation by Emily Henry, to an okay YA Kisses and Croissants by Anne-Sophie Jouhanneau, to YOU MUST READ THESE: How To Fail At Flirting By Denise Williams, The Road Trip by Beth O'Leary, Much Ado About You by Samantha Young, and Plot Twist by Bethany Turner (it's a better version of People We Meet On Vacation). Honestly I can't believe I was able to wait two months to make this podcast in the first place. The Heir Affair by Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan is the long awaited sequel of The Royal We that came out last year and we need to talk about it because...well, a lot of people didn't like it. Which, I GET IT. BUT - the writing. It's real. It's raw. It's what it needed to be after where we left off in The Royal We. This book was everything it needed to be and when I say I CRIED at the end for Freddie. Whew boy. The emotional rollercoaster! Come back tomorrow for part 2 of this series with the full rundown of the new Christina Lauren book The Soulmate Equation and why I cried all the happy tears at the end. But now - to The Heir Affair. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Continuing our conversation about Bright Bananas on the Romance Tree — this week we're reading an extreme oldie, Anne Stuart's Tangled Lies, famous for being a story about a heroine falling for her brother…except he's not really her brother! It's a RIDE. We talk about just how odd romance could be back in the day, about how this book might be an ancestor to dark romance, and about how alpha alpha heroes could really get. And then we talk about modern contemporary romance and how things are changing in traditional publishing. Our next read along in some number of weeks (three? four?) is Kylie Scott's Lead, one of our longtime favorites. Get it at Amazon, Apple Books, B&N, Kobo, or Bookshop.org! Thank you, as always, for listening! Please follow us on your favorite podcasting app, and if you are up for leaving a rating or review there, we would be very grateful! Show NotesBombshell comes out on Aug 24th. You should preorder it from WORD in Brooklyn, which will for sure come with some cool swag, including a special edition Fated Mates sticker. Best Friend Kelly did a Twitter poll asking people about their experiences ordering books + swag from Indie bookstores. Speaking of which, the art by Liz Parkes for The Soulmate Equation is the cutest! You might need this page as you are reading Tangled Lies.Speaking of books from your grandma's attic, look at what HEAapologist found this week! If you want this feeling without having relatives cool enough to leave them lying around, just order a big lot of random romances from eBay. For individual titles, Jen thinks Thrift Books is better than Amazon because you don't pay shipping for each individual title.Rob Imes has a page on his blog where he keeps track of all the category lines through 1989. In the case of Tangled Lies, it was first published as Harlequin Intrigue #5, then it was rebranded in the Men Made in America series, and finally part of the Famous Firsts Collection that celebrated Harlequin's 60th anniversary. Fiction DB is the place to do if you're looking for an author's backlist. Here is Anne Stuart's page, the one where the soldier and the nun have a baby together. Also, Catspaw.Check out Adriana's Instagram Live Series about telenovelas. Sarah was on to talk about Falcon Crest, because she imprinted on Lorenzo Llamas in his swim suit. His character's name was Lance Cumson. Sure.Speaking of Adriana, now is the time to preorder One Week to Claim it All. Jen and her brother Mike will be on to talk about Santa Barbara. In case you don't remember the movie Sneakers a very similar situation happens when Robert Redford is out for pizza in the 60s. And it looks like Jen & Sarah aren't the only ones who love this movie. Why we were all afraid of piranhas and quicksand in the 80s. I don't know why.The Pondering Padre (from the original cover) looks like Friar Lawrence, but not like Friar Tuck. Please note: not that kind of Priest. In the introduction, Anne Stuart mentioned being inspired by an old movie called Miss Tatlock's Millions (1948) but when it comes to "ope, maybe we're related" in pop culture, it seems hard not to talk about the influence of Flowers in the Attic and its famous incestual relationship. More recently, it was the Lannister twins in Game of Thrones or the folks in this Slate column. In romance, it was more common that these attractions were the mark of villainous men lusting after their sisters, such as Prisoner of My Desire by Johanna Lindsey, and others by Bertrice Small and Stella Cameron. A more updated story is Mister Moneybags by Vi Keeland and Penelope Ward.In film, along with Miss Tatlock's Millions, Sarah metioned Crimson Peak (2015), and Jen is kicking herself for not bringing up the terrific movie movie Lone Star (1996).Jen wrote about paratext on Twitter, which of course turned into a cover conversation. We have a lot of fun interviews with authors coming up in June, and our next read along (in a couple of weeks) will be Lead by Kylie Scott. Vulture TV Critic Angelica Jade Bastién wrote a thread asking why she's bored, and wondering what happend to interesting failures. Donald Glover returned to Twitter to blame cancel culture for boring art, but then he canceled his own tweets later. A few think pieces about why sexual content is being deplatformed on the: who is doing it, and who it impacts. I bet you're shocked to learn its about capitalism and right-wing politics. Why Sarah's Facebook group OSRBC keeps getting dragged into the net.We have a lot of really fun guests coming up in the next few weeks: Tia Williams, Zoraida Cordova, and Nana Malone. Our next read along (at some point in June) will be Lead by Kylie Scott.

Aphrodisia was a short-lived Kensington imprint that focused on erotica and erotic romance, it ran from 2006 to 2014. Jen asked if it was Ellora's Cave, which was another powerhouse erotic romance publisher that shuttered in 2014. A satyr is a magical creature from Greek mythology, so we're not sure if they 1) have two dicks and 2) if they are covered in soft fur. You're going to have to use your own imagination. We all hope that Nicholas the satyr is a little sexier that Mr. Tumnus from the movie version of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.Slate had a woman asking for advice about her pandemic threesome with two brothers, and you can tell a romance reader didn't write that advice, because probably they could work that out. Jen alerted Jenny Nordbak immediately, of course. Are you also looking for monster fucking romances? If you need a quick review on alpha traits, listen to our episode from season two.Knotting isn't just for A/B/O, it's also in romance. A little bit about the history of tinned food and the rise of advertising in Victorian England. All about the dormouse and keeping them as pets, if you're into that sort of thing.
