Episode 52 - Murdock and Marvel: 2000 Part 2 The new millenium started with some big endings, and comic book sales kept slipping this year. But 2000 featured some big developments that would point the way to the future of comics. Welcome to the Oughts, everyone! This is part 2 of the podcast. that will feature the year in Daredevil, the Spotlight story and the Takeaway for 2000. The Year in Daredevil Appearances: Daredevil #10-13, Earth X #10-12 and X, Fantastic Four #27, Avenger #27, Essential Fantastic Four #3, Marvel Knights #5-6, Daredevil: Ninja #1, Maximum Security #1, and Nick Fury: Agent of Shield graphic novel. Writing: David Mack (#10 – 11 and 13), Quesada and Palmiotti (12) Pencils: Joe Quesada (#10 – 11 and 13), Rob Haynes (12) Inks: Jimmy Palmiotti (#10 – 11), Rob Haynes (12), Mike Morales (13) A very light year for Daredevil as the main run only released four books this year – all part of the Parts of a Hole storyline started in December 1999. The story would continue until March 2001 when Parts of a Hole conclusion called Vision would reach stores. Visions will be our spotlight for this week. Issue 12, Gun Play, feels like a fill-in story covering a series of vignettes about Hell's Kitchen residents (featuring some very adult themes) while Echo and Daredevil fight rooftop-to-rooftop that was written by Joe Quesada and Jimmy Palmiotti, with art by Rob Haynes. Although it was well written, it does stall the pacing of the story for an issue. Outside of the main title, many of the Daredevil appearances this year were reprints including the Daredevil Visionaries: Frank Miller collection that was released in October which included 10 stories from the Frank Miller era and a second printing of the Punisher kills the Marvel Universe graphic novel. One other original story was started in December and spilled over into 2001 - Daredevil: Ninja which was a limited series written by Brian Michael Bendis and Rob Hayes that saw Daredevil dealing with the Hand and reuniting with Stone in Japan. When the scene shifts back to New York, Baby Karen (From Daredevil Vol.2 #1-8) turns out to be the next great hero of Japan. This Week's Spotlight: Daredevil volume 2 #15 March 2001 “Parts of a Hole Conclusion: Vision” Recap Why We Picked This Story Daredevil Rapid Fire Questions The Takeaway A lot of great work can get done when expectations are low and no one is watching. As with most series, the 'It's Alive' trilogy inevitably got a reboot somewhere in the Oughts. Is this movie a quick and cheap attempt to cash in on a recognizable name, or does it have something interesting to offer despite being a remake from a remake-happy era? And do the screenwriters know what babies actually are and what they do? Well, there's only one way to find out!
This week on the podcast: We can't stop the plugs! One of our favorite music writer lifers —Michael Tedder!— joins us to talk about his new(ish) book “Top Eight: How MySpace Changed Music” (published by Chicago Review Press, by the way). We also argue/chat about his old(er) articles, Boston (the town not the band), Harvey Danger, the Oughts, Jann Wenner and his beef, Stereogum (that's a plug), the quaint ‘90s dilemma of selling out, SPIN gaffes, and the magical music year that was 2003. WARNING: This episode doubles as a drinking game. Use caution!
In this deeply perceptive episode, the Pastords manage to talk about Mr. Rogers, fashion rules, podcast viewership, the power of expectations, the danger of the word "ought," Hebrew pronunciation, your inner critic, the voice of shame, handling criticism, and slowing down.
Welcome to Best Friend Therapy, where we chat about what's on our minds, to get deeper in our minds, and this week we're talking about jealousy.Do you have a touch of the green-eyed monster?Well, that might not be a bad thing. Because jealousy can show up to tell us when a relationship we value requires some maintenance - we jealously guard something because it matters to us.Sometimes that relationship will be with a friend or loved one, but sometimes the relationship that needs our attention is the one we have with ourselves. In this episode, Elizabeth and Emma share with brutal honesty the times in their lives they have felt jealous, and Emma challenges the dangerous idea that we should feel flattered or gracious when someone else is jealous of us. Emma reveals her avoidant side and why she'd rather just play in a different sandpit, and Elizabeth reveals that she can get you whatever you need from the Dark Web. Welcome to this episode of Best Friend Therapy, where we chat about what's on our minds, to get deeper in our minds.TW: miscarriageThis week we're talking about shoulds and oughts and why we feel compelled to live our lives by some pretty tough rules at times. Elizabeth shares times in her life when structure has helped her to feel in control and Emma explains why criticism can sometimes be tough to take. In my most philosophical moods (and I'm usually in a pretty philosophical mood) I tend to see pretty much anything as a window onto the cosmos. But I'd never considered my cotton slacks as a window onto the forward march of human progress. That is, until I read Virginia Postrel's new book, "The Fabric of Civilization: How Textiles Made the World." Did you know that the microbial theory of disease starts with silkworm farming? That the origins of computing have something to do with the algorithmic nature of weaving? That double-entry bookkeeping and modern finance are creatures of the textile trade? Well, I do now, thanks to Virginia's fascinating new book. We talk about all that, as well as the nature of the human desires for protection, comfort, pleasure, novelty and status that drive the whole story forward. Could whatever you're listening to this on now even exist if we didn't care about so much about pants? I don't know, but "The Fabric of Civilization" got me wondering. In addition to this book, Virginia Postrel is author of The Future and Its Enemies, the Substance of Style, and the Power of Glamour. Reason magazine under her editorship in the late '90s and early Oughts was a big formative influence on me and I count myself lucky to have her as a friend. She is also, I should mention, a member of the Niskanen Center's board of advisors. You might know her as the powerhouse behind the iconic songs that played at your middle school dances, on the school bus, or through the headphones of your 4th generation pink iPod Nano. You might know her as the amazing female rapper who had us all picking our jaws off the floor and baby teenyboppers asking ‘WHO is THAT?’ at the Superbowl and Video Vanguard Awards. Missy Elliott is an American treasure (duh), but what do you really know about her beyond her ICONIC music videos, her MTV Cribs episodes, or her close best-friendship with Timbaland? Missy comes from an abusive past, has struggled with anxiety and autoimmune disease, and has been the focus of body image critics and been boxed-in by tabloids who felt it was their duty to define her sexuality. She defined a generation of fashion, has been a fierce advocate for mental health, and has fought tooth and nail against racist and misogynistic industry standards... all while wearing our favorite iconic robot suits. So go try to find some Smirnoff Ice or some long-gone Pepsi Blue and listen to us gush over sexy lyrics, Aaliyah, “Lady Marmalade”, and how Emily once sang both parts of The Elephant Love Medley by herself. [FYI around minute 42 we lost the rest of our episode and had to re-record the second half, so bear with us, and use that spot as a place to pause and refresh your pizza bites and vodka Red Bulls.] --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
Movie of the Year: 2001Ocean's Eleven The Taste Buds swoon over 2001's coolest film, Ocean's 11! Ocean's 11 is pure Hollywood enjoyment. How much popcorn has been shoveled into maw's during this one is anyone's guess. Around these parts we tend to celebrate the more cerebral and mentally chunky movies, but you have to give it to Soderbergh and company--they set their sights on making a fun, cool, and classy movie and that's exactly what this is. Understanding that the movie wants to be fun and have fun is central to enjoying it, especially in a season that features movies that actively want to hurt us. A timeless classic It's almost hard to believe this movie is from twenty years ago; it feels like it should either be from yesterday or fifty years ago. It is timeless and classic at the same time. Rather than get bogged down with weird Sixties Hollywood nostalgia, it instead takes the spirt of those times and communicates them into the early Oughts. Doing this while relying on the star power of Clooney and Pitt makes for a home run, and the supporting cast, which is talented from top to bottom, ensures that home run is a grand slam! What we cover We hit all the important points in this one. At one point Ryan says, "Gould Goes for Gold!" which I thought was very funny, and if episodes of podcasts had posters, I think we would put that on the poster. We spend quite a bit of time talking about George Clooney in this episode and we even mention the satellite thing, which if you don't know about you should really look into. Neal Casal is an accomplished guitarist whose interesting career has led him from Blackfoot in the late 80s to the singer/songwriter world in the 90s to Ryan Adams in “The Oughts” and then onto Phil Lesh to his current adventurous band Circles Around The Sun. Seth and Rob spoke with him before Circles took the stage at the Terminal West in Atlanta. The conversation starts with a discussion about the unique way this band came together and how the members push each other to continue to reinvent the music in the spontaneous nature it was initially created. We the jump in “the wayback machine” and learn about how this New Jersey kid ended up being the lead guitarist of what many say is the best incarnation of Ryan Adams and The Cardinals. He also elaborates on the organic genesis of the band, Brotherhood (with Chris Robinson) and the raw beauty of the Hard-Working Americans (with Dave Schools and the ever-enigmatic Todd Snider). The show opens with a brief phone conversation featuring Joel Cummins of Umphrey’s McGee. We learn about his new and wildly informative book, “The Realist’s Guide To a Successful Music Career” which he wrote with author/entrepreneur Matt DeCoursey. Joel and Rob walk through just some of the many pieces of music career strategy wisdom that this book offers. It is a “must-read” for anyone seriously contemplating a dive into the business of music. wTnS Sponsors: Polay + Clark 21st Century Accounting (Don't wait till April and get screwed, get Polayed) www.polayclark.com CBD Vermont: wTnS is sponsored by CBD Vermont, which partners with organic farms in Vermont to produce organically-grown hemp used in full spectrum extracts, available for sale at CBDVermont.com. Beginning with Spiritual Practices That will Transform Your Life From: Calhoun, 2005, Spiritual disciplines handbook: Practices that transform us. 1. Set aside 20 minutes for the practice of your chosen discipline. Some require longer, so its good to start with 20 minutes. 2. Pray a prayer of dedication, such as, “ Here I am, Lord. I want to be with you. Open me up.” SIMPLE PRAYERS work! 3. EXPRESS your DESIRE to be with God BE INTENTIONAL! 4. Read the Scripture SLOWLY, let it settle into your HEART. 5. Posture is important to sit comfortable, a quiet place apart from distractions. 6. Respond to God in Prayer. 7. Tell God what it was like to practice the spiritual discipline. Express your thoughts and feelings freely: Gratitude Anger Frustration Impatience 8. Bring it all to God! BE REAL and Transparent! 9. Take away ONE word or THOUGHT with you into the rest of your day. Returning to the word or thought over time develops soul reflexes of attention to God. The practice of noticing God throughout your day shapes the way you live and interact with others. 10. Offer yourself to God and place yourself in His hands for the remainder of your day Willpower and discipline alone can never fix your soul. Striving, pushing, and trying harder will not recover your life. Being intentional wanting to keep company with Jesus has a staying lasting power that “SHOULD” and “OUGHTS” seldom have. YOU are blessed when you have worked up a good APPETITE for God! (Calhoun,2005) The very first thing Jesus asked his soon to be disciples was, “what do you want?” (John 1:37) Over and over again he asked about desires: Matthew 20:21 “What is it you want?” Matthew 20:32 / Mark 10:36 “What do you want me to do for you?” John 5:6 “Do you want to get well?” Pray! We have all been told we “ought to do” this and we “ought not to do” that. Why? Usually it is because those doing the telling know of the consequences or potential consequences for not performing the right action. But who determines what “ought or ought not” to be done, particularly concerning moral issues? Full text here: https://www.tomorrowsworld.org/commentary/oughts-and-ought-nots
All desires are not the same. There are the personal wants and desires, and then there is God's desire for us. God longs for us and wants us to be connected to him and those around us. Are your and God's desires aligned? How would you know? When our hopes and wants align with God's calling that is called the "heart's desire". Jesus healed the deaf and mute man in Tyre so that he could hear and speak clearly. Are we clearly listening to what God wants from us? And when we have unearthed our "heart's desire" are we expressing that with genuine "heart" in our words and actions? In this episode, Rev. Gibson and Johnny Gwin discuss the nature of delighting in the Lord, faith, longing, transformation, and getting the most out of Church.
