Novichok is the most deadly chemical weapon ever developed. With us to discuss the history of Novichok is Vil Mirzayanov. Vil worked in the secret Soviet chemical weapons laboratory that developed Novichok. He revealed its existence to the world in 1991 and was then arrested by the Russian counterintelligence service and prosecuted in a secret trial. He won his freedom with the help of an international group of scientists, including three who have appeared as guests on this podcast. He then immigrated to the United States and published his story in the book State Secrets. An Insider's Chronicle of the Russian Chemical Weapons Program, published in 2009 by Outskirts Press.
From the rural backwater of Hartland, Connecticut in 1773, Asher Benjamin would rise to become one of the most important figures of early American architecture. In addition to training as a skilled finish carpenter, he published the first architectural guidebooks-how-to books by an American-born author. These went through many editions and left a lasting record of how Federal-period craftsman could build the many stunning churches and homes from the earliest years of our country. He may have even held the first architectural school in America-more about that in this episode. In this episode, architectural historian Mary Donohue interviews guests William Ranauro, author of Asher Benjamin, American Architect, Author, Artist, published by Outskirts Press in 2021 and Lynn Mervosh, Site Administrator for the Phelps-Hatheway House and Garden in Suffield, Connecticut. Mr. Ranauro is one of the speakers for the upcoming Asher Benjamin Symposium. Today's episode is inspired by an upcoming symposium sponsored by Connecticut Landmarks to celebrate the work and legacy of Asher Benjamin, one of the most influential members of the first generation of American architects. Take in a full day of learning and gorgeous Fall foliage at the site of his first formal architectural commission, the Phelps-Hatheway House & Garden in Suffield, Connecticut. In the black community, we really just don't talk about death and hardly ever prepare for the transition of assets from one generation to the next. These conversations are often not had until after our loved ones have passed on and we start trying to unravel the financial life of the deceased either in a funeral home or via probate court. While we all know the stress that losing a loved one puts on a family, just imagine the drama that transpires after Big Mama is gone and her home and assets need to be equitably distributed throughout her 12+ descendants. While this sounds like the start of a black BET Network movie, this is the reality that many of us face. The Association of Black Estate Planning Professionals notes that "Black Americans today own little ⎯ if any ⎯ of America’s land, produce little if any of the country’s resources, and possess negligible amounts of this nation’s immense wealth. Yet Black Americans still project an aspiration based on blind faith in the American Dream". Much of our community's current lack of wealth is due in large part to how we plan for death versus funerals. So the Amerikan Therapy team sits down with some savvy legal and insurance experts to help us better understand how to ensure the effective passing on of generational wealth via legal, tax, and insurance structures. Until September 2016, he was University Distinguished Professor of Political Science at Miami University, Ohio, and is the recipient of many prestigious fellowships and awards. In addition to over 80 academic and public policy articles and book chapters, Dr Dawisha has 12 scholarly books, the most recent of which are the new and expanded editions of Arab Nationalism in the Twentieth Century (2016), and Iraq: A Political History (2013), both published by Princeton University Press, and The Second Arab Awakening (2013), published by W.W. A fast-paced thriller, The Paymaster is a tightly written and intricately plotted novel, with many unanticipated twists and revelations. The plot is complex, but not complicated, and while the narrative moves along at a tempo that makes it difficult for the reader to put the book down, there is enough space for character development, so that the reader feels intimately connected to the characters at every juncture of the novel. Adeed Dawisha is married to Dr. Karen Dawisha, author of the best-selling book, Putin’s Kleptocracy (Simon and Schuster, 2014). He has a daughter, Nadia, a son, Emile, and a recently arrived beautiful grandson, Theodore. After the Rodney King trial, and the acquittal of the police officers accused of brutality, Los Angeles exploded. Marginalized communities took to the streets, taking people from their cars and beating them, shooting up businesses, looting, and setting fires in the name of King.Thousands of people lost everything, and over 60 people lost their lives. We welcome my mother, Margaret Stevens, for a very special and poignant episode that involves my father almost becoming a casualty of the tragic 6 nights of rioting in South Central. Please note that this episode involves subjects including race and police brutality. Can you imagine flying over Mexico as an aftershock from one of the world’s most deadly quakes shakes the earth below? I can’t, but my dad has the memory of that exact situation. The Mexico City Earthquake of 1985 killed over 10,000 people and left more than 250,000 without homes. Hundreds of buildings crumbled, and beneath Juarez Hospital, the miracle babies born on the day of the quake clung to life as rescuers fought to save them. My dad was right there, observing the horror and trying to help those involved make sense of it all. This is what you didn’t know about the deadly Mexico quake of 1985._________________________________________________________Don't forget to R A T E and R E V I E W! We sincerely appreciate it. Mark Thomas was a notorious white supremacist, hated every race and culture besides his own, and was arrested for conspiring to rob banks to fund his violent cause. In 1997, my father traveled to Easton Pennsylvania and came face to face with the face of hate, while really pissing off the FBI in the process. The Bureau said that Thomas trained Timothy McVeigh, the eventual Oklahoma City Bomber. Here’s what you didn’t know about Thomas’ call to my dad, his exclusive interview, and what it was like sitting in his home as the FBI waited to perform a covert operation to arrest him. ---------------------Don't forget to R A T E and R E V I E W! This is a bit of a departure for dad. This episode is total high-octane fun -- a story about finding Axl Rose, Slash, and the rest of Guns 'N Roses in Axl's West Hollywood apartment. Drinking, a tale of accidentally getting too high in college, being too drunk to go on TV and so much more, listen to this one at full volume! Also -- IT'S MY BIRTHDAY! And the controversial song that prompted dad to have to go find Axl Rose, "One In A Million" was released on this day, Nov. 30, 1989. _____________________________________________Don't forget to R A T E and R E V I E W!
