ONCE UPON A GENE - EPISODE 028 Rare Disease Trailblazer and Co-Founder of Disorder - The Rare Disease Film Festival Bo Bigelow is the co-founder of Disorder: The Rare Disease Film Festival. He's joining today to talk about life in quarantine and his beautiful daughter Tess, who inspired him to produce a podcast, Stronger Everyday.  EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS Can you give us a background on yourself? My rare disease journey started when my daughter Tess was born 10 years ago. After years of looking, we found she has a very rare genetic disorder called USP7. At the time we got her diagnosis and found out about other patients in the world, we knew that she was patient #8 at the time. My wife and I decided to do something to help Tess and to help the other kids with USP7. We created a foundation with other parents with the goal of finding other patients. It's been an interesting journey and a big pivot in my life. Caring for Tess, working on the foundation and rare disease has become a big part of my job.  How has it been for Tess and your family since the quarantine began? Under normal circumstances, Tess loves school. She seems to be okay with the quarantine for the moment. A lot of the resources that her school has shared with us makes a big difference because we're able to carry over the songs and activities. The continuity has made a big difference. Her school has stepped up in a huge way sharing videos, songs and ideas and it's made all the difference.   Do you feel the social aspect of school is as important as other learning? There are years where Tess had vision and cognitive issues that lead us to wonder if she knew who was in the room with her, if she cared for people around her and if she felt friendship and love in a way others can see. It's hard to tell sometimes. In the last few years, she's really turned a corning in terms of the social piece. Although she's doing well at home right now, I know she's missing the social piece and she's thinking about her friends and wondering when she'll see them again.  What are some of Tess' health issues and why's it especially important for her to be home? We are in the land of the unknown with USP7. It's so rare and so little is known about it that all we really know is how it affects various systems. We know she has GI issues, which is affected by covid-19. What we don't know is how Tess' system would respond, but we know it wouldn't be good. We can't rely on her to cough things up and deal with congestion issues because she doesn't know how to do that, so we really don't want her getting sick.  Before quarantine, what were your typical outlets? That's really important, especially if you're dealing with someone with significant disabilities and a lot is asked of you. It's important to have something to do that has nothing to do with them. Exercise has been a really big one for my wife and me. For me, film is also a big outlet. It's hard to think about what you like. It takes time to re-discover what you love, but it's critical to do. With your foundation, is it more about finding community or treatments and cures? It's all about research and finding other patients is a piece of that. The more people we find, the more we'll know about the phenotype and symptoms. I'm a big believer in community, but it's not what we do. We're raising money to fund research and get to a cure. We have a Facebook group for parents that's not so much about our foundation, but serves as a community for the parents.  What do you suggest for people who are searching for others with a rare disease and feeling alone in their diagnosis? That's a hard place to be and I remember that feeling. You're going to get comfortable talking about the disease and you're going to be as loud as possible in as many ways as you can find. Getting on Twitter is a great thing to do. If you're the only one in the world, there's a method this guy named Matt Might came up with. His method is how we found our group when we thought Tess was the only one in the world. Matt had this specific way to write a blog post to be an internet beacon that people will find when they search online for symptoms. If you're a small group of patients and know there's others, there's a lot of value in being vocal and getting out there because people often get a diagnosis and they stop searching for other pieces of a bigger picture. Creating a film is effective if you want to put that out and ask people to share it.  How have your goals and your focus changed over the years since having Tess? For many years, it's been about communication. For a long time, it was about getting her to walk and we were only focused on that. After Tess learned to walk, we shifted our focus to communication because we know she wants to communicate and she gets frustrated when she can't. That's been our priority for a few years now and we look at it in terms of making progress and not comparing.  What wisdom do you have for other dads, male caregivers and families who have just received a diagnosis? I think we need more dads. I know they're out there and when I'm able to connect with one, I'm always really happy. It's hard to talk about this stuff and it took me awhile to be able to talk about, but I found it empowering once I did start talking about it. The more dads to get involved, the better. I think everyone needs to know that this is a small world. When you start talking about your disease, going to conferences, blogging, podcasting or whatever thing you're  doing to work on your rare disease- once you start doing it you see the same people popping up. Everyone is open, ready to get on the phone or to meet up. People want to help and they don't want to see you recreate stuff they've already created and they're willing to share. Just ask and you'll be surprised what people are willing to do to help.  LINKS AND RESOURCES MENTIONED Disorder: The Rare Disease Film Festival https://www.rarediseasefilmfestival.com/ Episode 15: Films and Fatherhood with Daniel DeFabio https://effieparks.com/podcast/008-tanjs-akayy-jr78y-ja2e8-zanza-njkxy Stronger Everyday Podcast http://www.portlandrootsmedia.com/strongerpodcast Discovering new diseases with the internet: How to find a matching patient http://matt.might.net/articles/rare-disease-internet-matchmaking/ Foundation for USP7 Related Diseases https://www.usp7.org/ TUNE INTO THE ONCE UPON A GENE PODCAST Spotify https://open.spotify.com/show/5Htr9lt5vXGG3ac6enxLQ7 Apple Podcasts https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/once-upon-a-gene/id1485249347 Stitcher https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/once-upon-a-gene Overcast https://overcast.fm/itunes1485249347/once-upon-a-gene CONNECT WITH EFFIE PARKS Website https://effieparks.com/ Twitter https://twitter.com/OnceUponAGene Instagram https://www.instagram.com/onceuponagene.podcast

My guest for The Happy Hour # 260 is Tess Clarke. Tess is the co-founder of Seek the Peace and the Director of We Welcome Refugees. She has a passion to see refugee and immigrant women protected and empowered along with helping the American church recognize and revere the image of God in these women.  Friends, if you hear the topic of this show and think this episode might be a political one, let me just tell you it isn't. Through our conversation I know you will see Jesus in the stories Tess shares, and the ways she encourages us to find the humanity in one another. Tess starts off telling us how she and her husband began working with refugees. We get to hear some of their stories, what they've been through, and how "refugees are ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances."  We also learn about Tess' ministry Project Shine that equips pre-teen and teen refugee girls to understand their own worth, strength, and purpose. I know that these stories of suffering can be hard to listen to, but Tess describes how every single one of us can participate in the ministry of presence. She encourages us to go and find those who look, live, and sound different than you and to challenge our own bias. Tess says, God is calling us is step in and listen, and we are all invited to "come and be." Dutch bartender Tess Posthumus and co-founder of Flying Dutchmen Cocktails in Amsterdam shares her Backstory with EXHETRA creator and Backstory curator Jo Jepson-Davies.Tess Posthumus fell in love with mixology after moving to Amsterdam from her hometown of Breda, where she worked in catering, events, restaurants and bars. In addition to studying at the University of Amsterdam, she joined the team at Door 79 in 2009.In December last year, Posthumus held a soft launch for her new venue, launched with former Door 74 manager Timo Janse, called Flying Dutchmen Cocktails. The venue officially opened its doors in March 2018.A regular on the cocktail competition circuit, Tess has learn to work in a male dominated industry. She has reached the Dutch National finals in Diageo World Class and was one of four Dutch winners in Bombay Sapphire’s Most Imaginative Bartender competition.Tess has written a cocktail book, called Cocktails met Tess.Along with her Backstory, Tess gives us an insight into the gay scene in Amsterdam, which I found quite disappointing. As Tess says at the end of the interview 'there is still alot to do'.I love Tess' honest and open approach to her gay life and I am so pleased she continues to discuss it and live an out and proud life.NOTE: New to podcasting, unfortunately I didn't use my mic muff for this interview which would have been essential to keep any wind off the mic, so I am sorry if the sound is a bit poor in places. The Mexico City Earthquake of 1985 killed over 10,000 people and left more than 250,000 without homes. Hundreds of buildings crumbled, and beneath Juarez Hospital, the miracle babies born on the day of the quake clung to life as rescuers fought to save them. Episode 29: Casting a Vision for Your Financial Future

House of FI

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 6, 2019 56:42

House of FI, it’s time to get back to the basics of money management.  The first month of 2019 is behind us. We’ve set our personal and financial goals but the newness of the New Year has worn off, and now it’s time to renew our commitment to the changes we know will inspire huge wins for our families.   This is the reason we spoke to Dan Shaw in the previous episode, and it’s why we are speaking to Tess Wicks in this episode.  Tess Wicks is a personal finance coach and educator who breaks down the journey to financial independence into key action steps and makes the connection between our priorities, the things we acquire, and our life vision.  Tess has a vibrant online community, and she is also the host of the Wander Wealthy Podcast. Tess aims to empower her clients to get smart about their money while still being able to spend it on the things that bring them joy. In this episode, we touch on her money story, her views on the cost of education, entrepreneurship and the concept of the Anti-Budget. Money Story Who we are and why we end up doing the things we do as adults can often be traced back to early memories and experiences we had along the way. Tess Wicks is no different.   Tess grew up with parents that owned a very successful business.  She was the fourth child, and because of her place in the birthline, Tess had the unique experience of growing up on the other side of their initial business struggles.  Before she was born, they lived in a tiny house in another part of town. By the time she came around, they’d seen business success, they achieved a more stable money position and they lived in a nicer home. What we loved the most about Tess’ experience of their increased financial stability was that her parents often drove back to the smaller home and revisited the way things were along the path to their success.  Sometimes, in order to teach your kids where you are headed, you have to show them where you have been. Charting Her Own Path! Originally Tess was less than thrilled about following in the business ownership footsteps of her parents.  At first, she planned to be a forensic pathologist. However, when college was all said and done, Tess actually excelled in the area of Actuarial Science.   While working as a pension consultant - valuing the pension plans of various agencies - it became clear to her that her time in actuarial work was limited.  She needed something more and began to imagine a different future for herself. She found a creative outlet in podcasting.   The corporate structure was repetitive, so while completing all of her data-driven work, Tess began listening to personal development podcasts.  At the time, the podcasts were all male owned, and because of that, there were very few female guests for their interviews. So, Tess and a friend, in an effort to elevate the female voice started their own podcast together. Today Tess owns the Wander Wealthy company, where she helps young people take control of their money, and grow their investments. Tess On The Cost Of College College costs are front of mind for many parents. The subject of how to avoid college costs, and also whether Tess felt college was helpful now that she is an entrepreneur came up. In the end, Tess was pretty torn about whether college (all costs included) is actually worth the money. Reasons Why Tess is Torn on The Need to Pursue College: The rising cost of college is crushing its participants. Parents and families don’t always understand the implications of chasing the higher education dream. Most people are going to get a higher salary by attending school, but sometimes it doesn’t happen this way. To determine the need for college, Tess suggests that families sit down and map out their goals. After writing down everything you want to achieve through college, break down the math to see how much the goal is really going to cost you. First Steps of Financial Stability List your goals - this ties your starting place to your ending place. Emergency savings fund - Starting with a foundation of an emergency fund help ward off budget problems later. Create your strategy next - for this you may need help, but the key is to create a strategy that fits your personal experience Live a little - it is important to give yourself some buffer to breathe and live. If you can't reward yourself for doing such good financial planning, what are you doing it for? Tess has an awesome new course called the Invested Plan, where she teaches you how to save and invest for the future - something that can be so daunting for many of us. Tess on the Final Questions: Money Lesson : Work with people and hire professionals that can make your life easier. Tess' parents had very smart people on their team that they were able to invest in. This pays off early and easily. Life Hack: Pursuing a more minimal lifestyle with additional spending on the items that positively affect her lifestyle. It’s good to be frugal and save money, but have an area of your life that you are able to spend in.  Be very specific about what you allow into your life and spend a little more for good quality items. GutsXGritXGrind - the This Is Female Powerlifting Podcast

This week on episode 4 of the first season of GutsXGritXGrind, the This is Female Powerlifting podcast, we summon the spirit of the festive season to bring you a Santa hat full of powerlifting-related, rant-invoking topics. Take four dirtbag powerlifters, two angel powerlifters (to balance it out) and a five minute timer that signals when it's time for whiskey shots and you have the worst thing we've ever done. The best thing we've ever done? Sorry mum. Sorry everyone. 3:07 Topic 1: STUPID "US VS THEM" POWERLIFTING DISPUTES. We don't care what fed you lift in, but posting dumb memes and whining about perceived slights against you because of the fed you lift with is ridiculous. Why is our sport so fragmented? 4:51 More feds, more records. Default gold for everyone! 5:12 We explain what a sub-master is. Sort of. Tess asserts dominance. 6:15 We call out the IPF. BOOM! 9:05 Topic 2: EARNING YOUR OPINION CARD. What is the magic point that we're allowed to have an opinion on something?  Do we need a degree?  Time in the sport? A certain Wilks? 9:40 Have you considered someone might be smarter than you? 10:30 Darron hates people. (But especially those who don't recognize other people expertise) 13:05 Bonus time to discuss the Lifting Concern Police. Eff you, windbags! 15:10 Topic 3: IS YOUR PR A PR? If you have added the caveat "no, he didn't touch the bar I swear" to your PR, you probably didn't do it alone. Is your competition lift PR really a PR when it's a mile high, or your butt came off the bench? Are we just too judgemental? 16:40 Be honest with yourself. If your PR isn't sport specific, it's irrelevant to your sport. 17:22 Darron wants to see your butt! Show us your butt! 19:02 Gaïa ruins Christmas 19:55 Topic 4: CHEER UP, GYM EEYORES. Please, be happy about something you've done, even just once. For me. For you. For everyone. 20:19 Truth bomb: you might not PR during every single training cycle 20:54 Default gold. It's not Tess' fault that no other fat old ladies have shown up. 24:08 "Let's get fucking profound now here, bitches" 26:00 Topic 5: SO YOU'RE INJURED. STOP TALKING ABOUT IT AND START DOING SOMETHING ABOUT  IT. You've posted 800 times about your injury/"injury". You've posted 0 times about what you are doing to fix it. This leads us to believe you are doing nothing. When is an injury a legitimate injury and when is it an excuse? 27:40 That time Tess tore her achilles and Darron heard it snap. 29:00 Go see a professional! Quit trying to fix it yourself. 29:15 We all love dry needling. 30:28 Tess and Darron get closer. "You're the gayest woman that loves my husband." 31:35 Topic 6: POWERLIFTING OR FITSPO. Let's be real here. Is that account full of semi-nudes with inspirational captions about powerlifting? Or is it soft core fitspo porn? 31:55 "It is not about what you look like. Lift the thing. That is all." 33:40 We really can't emphasize enough how much we like butts. Or at least we don't think we can. Because we can't stop talking about it. 35:15 Your ab selfie isn't powerlifting. Your cleavage selfie isn't powerlifting. Your traps selfie isn't powerlifting. They're just cool selfies. 36:28 Shout out to @kittycatlifting's awesome butt! 37:09 Topic 7: GYM PDA: stop cuddling on the ER rack, we all know you're in loooooove. What do we think about couples cuddling at the gym? 37:23 Beans advocates a return to Victorian-era modesty at the gym. 38:40 Darron and Tess re-enact some gym PDA. You'll want to check out the YouTube version of our podcast to get the full impact. 39:45 "JUST SCISSOR ALREADY!" 41:25 Topic 8: BABY'S FIRST WATER CUT: No one cares that you were the best at weigh-ins - and other ways people get distracted when it comes to meet prep. 42:02: Rhaea Stinn said it best with "live at your weight." That was Rhaea, right? RHAEA? RHAEA CAN YOU HEAR US? 45:20 Imagine how powerful you could be if you were bigger! 46:48 Topic 9: TOO LONG, DIDN'T WATCH. We sit through 45 seconds of you wriggling around on the bench for 2 seconds of a 85% single. Lingering over your set-up while glossing over your lifts and other training video pet peeves. 47:54 Please stop trying to make set-up gains. 49:05 We discuss Beans' squat set up. "But you're cute as pie when you stomp your feet." "I'M ANGRY. I'M NOT CUTE. LISTEN TO THE SOUND OF MY HOOVES" 50:33 Use the trim function. You know it's there. Use it. 51:53 Topic 10: PROGRAM JUMPERS - and their complaints that "nothing is working". What are the signs someone is sabotaging themselves? 56:00 If you lie to your coach about what you're doing, you're sabotaging yourself. Follow the program honestly, keep honest records. 57:40 "You can't control the speed of the gain train." 58:55 Is part of being a powerlifter feeling like a sack of shit the majority of the time? We sure seem to think so. 1:00:22 Topic 11: I HAVE A BUBBLE, DON'T VIOLATE MY BUBBLE. What are some of the common ways people invade your space at the gym? 1:00:53 Drunk Beans tells a story about a time some dude invaded her space at the gym. 1:04:20 Want to talk to someone? Pick your moment. Maybe don't hit on Vanessa when she's in the MIDDLE of a squat. 1:05:27 VERBAL WARNING: We do yet another shot and things *really* begin to deteriorate. Beans does two shots for good measure. Gaïa forgets the F in TIFPL. We all let loose with a stream of creative curse words. Then, Darron tries to get us back on track. 1:07:50 Topic 12: TERRIBLE SPOTTERS - also UNSOLICITED SPOTTERS: if your presence makes us more nervous than no spotter at all, please go away. Also, please stop using spotting as an excuse to grab boobs. You're not fooling anyone. How to spot an incompetent spotter and how to tell him or her to buzz off. 1:09:15 We discuss with great gravitas the difference between getting grabbed on the boob and being spotted properly around the midsection. 1:10:08 We reflect on Gaïa's grinding ability. Darron desperately tries to make the conversation make sense again. She fails. 1:11:42 A fun game for you to play would be to take a shot every time one of us says "Ok, but seriously..." or some variation thereof. 1:14:18 Darron tries to wrap it up. We do one last shot. Thank you for joining us! Please accept our sincere apologies and send your complaints to the TIFPL complaints department, Jon at Evolve Strength.
