Show #684   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Saturday 1st February 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   ONLY TWO VERSIONS OF TESLA MODEL Y NOW EXIST IN DESIGN STUDIO "Tesla recently updated its online design studio for the all-new Tesla Model Y, which as we know already entered production and will be delivered to first customers this quarter." reports InsideEVs: "Long Range AWD and Performance Long Range AWD. There is no sign of the Long Range RWD and Standard Range RWD any more, which suggests that those versions will not be available, at least not in the initial phase. "   From the Tesla.com support page: "How much does it cost to place an order for Model Y? The cost to place an order for Model Y is $100 USD non-refundable order fee. The full payment for the total cost of your car will be collected at delivery. When will Model Y production begin? We recommend checking the Model Y design studio for your region’s most up-to-date production estimates. Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive is not scheduled for production at this time. Can I edit or cancel my Model Y order? You can edit or cancel your Model Y order in your Tesla Account. Pre-orders can request a full refund of their deposit from their Tesla Account."   Calling Tesla fans - isn't that $100 a change down from $2500. Now it's a non-refundable order fee.   https://insideevs.com/news/395856/two-versions-tesla-model-y-design-studio/   ORDERS OPEN FOR NEW VW E-UP! "Volkswagen has opened the order books for the revised e-up!, now featuring a range of 159 miles on a charge. The new version of the pure-electric citycar sees a significant range increase from the previous model's 83 mile rating. This is primarily because of the new 32.2 kWh battery - up from 18.7 kWh" says Chris Lilly at NExt Green Car: "Because of its place within the up! range, the e-up! also benefits from recent equipment boosts, including multifunciton camera with lane assist and smartphone integration cradle. Heated front seats and windscreen, climate control, automatic wipers, and cruise control are also fitted as standard to the electric up!. Prices start at £19,695, including Plug-in Car Grant, with orders being taken now."   https://www.nextgreencar.com/news/8842/orders-open-for-new-vw-eup/   LINCOLN WILL BUILD AN ELECTRIC VEHICLE USING EV STARTUP RIVIAN’S TECH "The Lincoln Motor Company has confirmed it’s developing an all-electric vehicle that will be powered by tech from EV startup Rivian." reports The Verge: "Lincoln’s parent company, Ford, announced a $500 million investment in Rivian in April 2019, and said it would build an electric vehicle on the startup’s platform (basically the battery, electric motors, and all the other tech that makes an EV go). It was reported in the months following that the vehicle would be a Lincoln SUV, but Ford’s luxury marque had not confirmed any parts of those reports until today."   https://www.theverge.com/2020/1/29/21113578/lincoln-rivian-electric-suv-ford-platform-tech   TESLA'S GIANT HOME BATTERY IS PAYING FOR ITSELF "Four years ago, Tesla installed its first ever Powerwall battery pack in an Australian household, and now the residing Pfitzner family has revealed just how much of an impact the energy-saving measure has made." picks up TechRadar: "When combined with a solar panel system, Powerwall allows users to store any excess energy generated by the panels in order to use it at times when the sun alone can’t provide the necessary power.  Over the course of four years, this resulted in the Pfitzner family saving a total of about $5,700 (AU$8,463) on their electricity bills, paying an average of just 30 cents (AU$0.46) per day. It’s worth noting that the family spent AU$16,000 (about $10,800) installing the battery, solar system, and any related hardware to the home, so it hasn’t quite paid itself off yet."   https://www.techradar.com/uk/news/worlds-first-tesla-powerwall-is-paying-itself-off-much-faster-than-expected   TESLA PARTNERS WITH LG CHEM, CATL FOR BATTERY SUPPLY " Tesla Inc has entered into a partnership with South Korea’s LG Chem and China’s CATL for supply of batteries used in its electric cars, the company said on Wednesday. Tesla, which has a long-standing battery supply agreement with Japan’s Panasonic Corp (6752.T), said its pact with LG Chem and CATL was at a smaller scale." says Reuters: "Last year, Reuters reported on Tesla’s talks with LG Chem to source batteries for vehicles to be made in its Shanghai plant. A source had also told Reuters that the electric carmaker may source batteries from CATL in the future."   https://www.reuters.com/article/us-tesla-china-catl/tesla-partners-with-lg-chem-catl-for-battery-supply-idUSKBN1ZT16G   BYD BUILDS NEW LITHIUM-POWERED FORKLIFT FACILITY IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA "BYD continues to sprint towards electrifying every vehicle category in the world with news today that it is adding an electric forklift shipping and receiving facility in the Southern California city of Rancho Dominguez." according to CleanTechnica: "BYD believes its lithium-powered forklifts are game changers as they extend the life expectancy of the battery pack significantly compared to their lead-acid predecessors. A 90-minute charge time helps them to stay fully topped up with minimal downtime throughout a shift or day."   https://cleantechnica.com/2020/01/30/byd-builds-new-lithium-powered-forklift-plant-in-southern-california/   2020 HYUNDAI IONIQ ELECTRIC BOASTS 37% MORE DRIVING RANGE, NOW STARTING AT $33,045 Hyundai Motor America announced prices for the eco-friendly 2020 IONIQ Electric car.   The redesigned 2020 IONIQ Electric delivers 170 miles of range, technology and advanced standard safety features at a starting price of $33,045 for the well-equipped SE model. Show #665   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 13th January 2020. Oh my goodness! NEIL E ROBERTS AND LEANNE, FROM SUSSEX EVS, have increased their support! They were already EXECUTIVE PRODUCERS but that’s amazing, thank you.   400,000 GERMAN JOBS AT RISK IN SWITCH TO ELECTRIC CARS "The shift to electric vehicles could cost 410,000 jobs in Germany by 2030, daily Handelsblatt reported on Monday, citing government advisers." acccording to a Reuters report: "In engines and transmissions’ production alone, around 88,000 jobs will be at risk, the newspaper said, citing a report by the National Platform for the Future of Mobility (NPM), an advisory council for the government. Electric cars’ engines are made of fewer parts and require less maintenance than combustion engines, which will result in layoffs, the report was quoted as saying. Vehicle production will be further automated and will not be sufficient to support the current level of jobs, Handelsblatt said, citing NPM’s Chairman Henning Kagermann. In 2018, employment in the car industry in Germany reached 834,000, its highest since 1991."   https://www.reuters.com/article/us-germany-autos-emobility/more-than-400000-german-jobs-at-risk-in-switch-to-electric-cars-handelsblatt-idUSKBN1ZC0N2   VW CONFIRMS ID.3 WITH BIGGEST BATTERY SEATS ONLY FOUR "Thanks to Battery Life, we have learned a few new things about the upcoming Volkswagen ID.3, which will be handed to the first customers in Summer 2020." says INsideEVs: " Volkswagen says that it will manage to deliver cars in the Summer of 2020 and there is no change in the timingThe German manufacturer currently is producing the first batch of ID.3, which is stored on special parking lots and will be tested by the employees. Photos of such facilities were provided by the German EV rental company nextmove in its video. olkswagen has confirmed that the 1ST edition cars will be available only with single-zone climate control (the two-zone climate control will be available later). It was also confirmed that there will be no park-assist feature in the first edition cars (there are parking sensors and automatic emergency braking though). The biggest thing seems to be the news that the ID.3 will be a five-seater only in two battery versions: 45 kWh and 58 kWh, while the 77 kWh battery will be a four-seater. Moreover, the biggest battery pack can not be combined with a panoramic roof. The reason for that seems to be weight - it would be too high with the assumption of the fifth passenger."   LARGEST ELECTRIC SCHOOL BUS PROGRAM IN UNITED STATES LAUNCHING IN VIRGINIA From Cynthia at CleanTechnica: "Dominion Energy has partnered with local Virginia school districts to begin replacing diesel buses with 100% electric school buses in phases. No phase can come too soon, so CleanTechnica wishes all school districts a rapid rollout after the initial 50 launch the program. Children are more sensitive to air pollution than adults, and it hurts them and their studies." She writes: "The buses can be used as batteries for the grid or for electricity use off the grid as well. Dominion Energy shares, “When not in use, they can be tapped as an energy resource through vehicle-to-grid technology. If energy needs are high or if renewable resources are intermittent, the batteries can provide stability to the grid. During a power outage or emergency, the batteries could serve as mobile power stations.”1,050 electric buses could provide enough energy to power 10,000+ homes."   https://cleantechnica.com/2020/01/12/largest-electric-school-bus-program-in-united-states-launching-in-virginia/   ASTON MARTIN REPORTEDLY KILLS RAPIDE-E ELECTRIC CAR PROGRAM "After officially launching the “production version” of its first electric car last year, Aston Martin has now reportedly killed its Rapide-E electric car program." according to electrek: "The British automaker unveiled a prototype of a Rapide converted with an all-electric drivetrain, the “Rapide E,” back in 2015. Two years later, they started working with Williams Advanced Engineering, the tech division of the Williams Formula 1 team, to make the vehicle’s electric powertrain. Last year, we saw one of the first production prototypes of the Rapide E and Aston Martin officially launched the car at the Shanghai Auto show in April 2019. Now almost a year later, the company is reportedly canceling plans to produce the vehicle and it will instead shift the program into an EV research project."   https://ww.electrek.co/2020/01/13/aston-martin-rapide-e-electric-car-kill-program/#   UFODRIVE ADDS LONDON AND BERLIN TO TESLA RENTAL SERVICE "The electric car rental company UFODrive is expanding into further cities. The Tesla Model 3 and Model S are now available for rent at Potsdamer Platz in Berlin and at three London locations." reports electrive: "The electric vehicles are picked up and returned at fixed stations.   Anyone in Berlin who wants to rent an electric car for a day can now do so at Potsdamer Platz in the “Mall of Berlin” multi-story car park. The company has entered into a partnership with APCOA for this purpose. The Tesla Model 3 is now available in the parking garage for 99 euros and the Model S for 149 euros per day. The price always includes comprehensive insurance policy and three additional drivers. In London, UFODrive will initially start with three locations (Park Lane/Marble Arch, Oxford Circus and Westfield). In order to be able to offer the vehicles at fixed stations here as well, a partnership was entered into with Q-Park, among others. For the Tesla Model 3 a price of 109 pounds per day."   2020 NISSAN LEAF STARTS AT $31,600 "Nissan has announced the pricing for the 2020 Nissan Leaf in the United States. The 2020 Leaf comes in S, SV, and SL trims. The S and SV are offered in Plus versions with larger battery packs. The SL only comes in plus version. The cheapest 2020 Nissan Leaf is the Leaf S with the 40 kWh battery pack that will sell for $31,600 plus the $925 destination charge." according to Slashgear.com: "Moving into the Plus range sees the Leaf S Plus with a 62 kWh battery starting at $38,200. Leaf SV Plus starts at $39,750, and the Leaf SL Plus costs $43,900. There are some key changes made to all 2020 Leaf models, namely Nissan Safety Shield 360 is standard on all models. That includes Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, Rear Automatic Braking, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Blind Spot Warning Lane Departure Warning, and High Beam Assist. All Leaf models also get Intelligent Forward Collision Warning, Intelligent Lane Intervention, and Blind Spot Intervention for the 2020 model year."   https://www.slashgear.com/2020-nissan-leaf-starts-at-31600-13606641/   TESLA MODEL 3 PRICE DROP RESULTS IN SURGE OF ORDERS IN CHINA "The spike in interest from Chinese citizens also comes after Tesla announced an over $7,000 price decrease for its Made-in-China Model 3. The strategy was used by Tesla to undercut popular local automakers and fellow premium segment rivals in China." says Teslarati: "Twitter user and Tesla enthusiast @Ray4Tesla uploaded numerous photos of the Taiguhui Tesla Experience Center in Shanghai this past weekend, showing the location filled with people looking to order their electric vehicles. Reports from local media state that hundreds of Model 3s are being ordered at each store per day and 1,200 are being ordered in China daily."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-3-order-surge-china-price-drop/       NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week…   Which car company would you like to see doing more to embrace electrification? Show #461   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 2nd May 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   HYUNDAI IONIQ ELECTRIC WITH UPGRADED 38.3-KWH BATTERY "The new Hyundai IONIQ family is finally unveiled with updated hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric versions. Let’s see some highlights about the one that matters, the electric. I really like the new Hyundai IONIQ Electric and I think that more range with a lower charging rate at DC fast chargers is a good trade-off, especially considering that the on-board charger was upgraded. Higher range gives us more freedom to avoid expensive and overcrowded DC fast chargers and charge at home – where charging is more convenient and a lot cheaper." says Pedro at PushEVs.   "The new IONIQ Electric’s battery has been upgraded from 28 kWh to 38.3 kWh, meaning drivers can go even further between charges. It boasts 36% additional energy storage capacity, offering a total of 294 kms of range (internal target under WLTP regulations). Its e-motor delivers a maximum power of 136 PS and 295 Nm of torque and is fitted standard with a 7.2-kW on-board charger – an upgrade from current 6.6-kW – for Type 2 AC charging. Using a 100-kW fast-charging station, the battery can reach 80% charge in as little as 54 minutes. As well as the new convenience features, the new IONIQ’s reimagined interior incorporates new design factors to enhance its sophisticated image. In addition to standard black seat trims, customers have the option of four leather seat colours: Black, Gray two-tone, Red Umber (exclusive for hybrid and plug-in) and Electric Shadow (exclusive to electric version). Meanwhile, the dashboard garnish arrives in Dark Chrome Accent."   "The new IONIQ’s leading safety package includes Front Collision Warning and Avoidance Assist with Pedestrian Detection with new Cyclist Detection ability and Driver Attention Warning. Lane Keeping Assist and High Beam Assist also come standard. Optionally available as well are Lane Following Assist which keeps the car in the middle of a lane so drivers can navigate safely even in heavy traffic during rush hour, and Intelligent Speed Limit Warning that uses the front camera and information from the navigation system to identify road speed signs and displays the speed limit and no-passing signs in real time. Using the radar sensor to detect the distance from the car in front, Smart Cruise Control with Stop&Go and Leading Vehicle Departure Alert maintains a preset distance to automatically stop and depart again according to traffic conditions. Additional options include Blind-Spot Collision Warning and Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Warning. Taking a cue from its similarly innovative Kona Electric sibling, as a maximum use of regenerative braking technology, the new IONIQ Electric adopts 1-pedal driving capability, which allows drivers to stop the car by simply holding onto the left paddle shift lever with often no need to engage the braking pedal. Working thus via Smart Regenerative Braking, the level of energy recuperation is automatically adjusted depending on the road incline and traffic situation in front when coasting. The new IONIQ Electric also features Eco+, which supplements the standard Eco, Comfort and Sport driving modes. By selecting the Eco+ mode, drivers reduce their energy consumption and the car’s remaining energy can be extended during unforeseeable emergency situations."   https://pushevs.com/2019/05/02/new-hyundai-ioniq-family/   TESLA IS NOT ALLOWING RANGE UPGRADE ON NEW 150 KM MODEL 3 IN CANADA "Tesla launched a new, cheaper Model 3 with 150km range in Canada to get access to the new $5,000 federal incentive, but we’re now learning that the company is not offering any range upgrade on that new version of the Model 3 — effectively making the vehicle unsellable." says Fred at Electrek.   “To be eligible for incentives, a vehicle must have a base-model manufacturer’s suggested retail price of less than $45,000 for passenger vehicles with six or fewer seats, and less than $55,000 for vehicles with seven or more seats. For eligible vehicles with six or fewer seats, higher priced versions (trims) are eligible as long as the final manufacturer’s suggested retail price is $55,000 or less.”   "It disqualified Tesla’s vehicles from being eligible to the incentive because the base Model 3, which is only available as an “off-the-menu item”, starts at $47,000. In response earlier this week, Tesla has lowered the price of the vehicle to $44,999 in Canada, but it also software-locked the vehicle to only 150 km (93 miles) of range. Tesla has done that in the past, but the automaker offered to unlock the range as an option for a cost similar to the original cost before the range decrease. Buyers in Canada reached out to us saying that Tesla salespeople were saying that they were not aware of any such upgrade in this case. We contacted a Tesla spokesperson about the situation and the automaker confirmed that they are not offering any range upgrade through a software update for the base version at $45,000."   https://electrek.co/2019/05/02/tesla-model-3-range-upgrade-canada/   TESLA SEEKS CAPITAL RAISE OF OVER $2 BILLION "Tesla Inc will raise up to $2.3 billion in new capital, renouncing what Elon Musk called a “Spartan diet” and easing Wall Street concerns about the money-losing company’s ability to overcome a drop in sales and build new product lines." reports Reuters: "Before Tesla’s announcement on Thursday, however, analysts speculating about a capital raise had cautioned that the company had missed optimal timing - last year’s third quarter, when the company posted a profit. Tesla has reported four profitable quarters since it went public in June 2010."   "Tesla needs some $2 billion of additional capital to finance its expansions after the huge $700 million in losses in the first quarter. Funds will be raised in two ways: issues of new shares - up to $650 million (+15% option for underwriters) issues of new debt - up to $1,350 million (+ 15% option for underwriters) Total up to $2 billion ($2.3 billion including 15% option for underwriters)"   "Tesla has 2.2 billion of cash and equivalent, which is great but not enough to continue rapid expansion. Besides the new Gigafactory 3 in China, the company needs to launch the Model Y and more products after that. Capital expenditures plan is:   2019: $2-2.5 billion 2020: $2.5-3 billion 2021: $2.5-3 billion"   THE E-GOLF. ZERO EMISSION AND NOW 0% PCP "Volkswagen’s e-Golf is now available, for a limited period only, with 0% PCP Finance, making this car more affordable and more accessible than ever before. Plus, customers wishing to move into the new Volkswagen ID. will be able to do so easily, thanks to a special new 2-year PCP solution." reports The Avondhu: "The e-Golf starts from €35,995 after Government incentives and now with 0% PCP starts from as little as €349 per month. The e-Golf Executive Edition offers the ‘ultimate e-Golf’ and costs from €39,495 or with 0% PCP from as little as €379 per month."   https://avondhupress.ie/the-e-golf-zero-emission-and-now-0-pcp/   NISSAN BUMPS UP LEAF BASE PRICE IN UK "Despite competing in a tough new car market, Nissan thinks it deserves to give its still-fresh Leaf a price hike in the UK. A Nissan official told Autocar this week the price change is due to, "market demands and other influences, such as inflation and cost base." Considering the company's Sunderland plant supplies the Leaf to the UK and surrounding countries, those "other influences" sound like they could be related to uncertainty of Britain's exit from the European Union – and uncertainty as to how long the " according to Za at InsideEVs.com: "The Leaf's base price jumps to £27,995, up £1,805, even after the government subsidy of £3,500. That's in a class that includes the likes of the Volkswagen e-Golf and Hyundai Ioniq Electric, and it's for the base model rated at 168 miles of range in the UK. However, the Leaf e+ (Leaf Plus in the U.S.) is now in full production for the UK and boasts much more standard equipment and 239 miles of range, which is more competitive with the likes of the Kia e-Niro."   WILLIAMS ADVANCED ENGINEERING TO DESIGN AND SUPPLY BESPOKE BATTERIES FOR EXTREME E Extreme E announced Wednesday a new partnership with Williams Advanced Engineering, to supply batteries for the newly-launched electric SUV off-road racing series – set to commence on its first voyage in January 2021. The batteries will be specially-designed and developed by Williams, plugging into the expertise and experience of the same minds who assembled the batteries and cells for the first four seasons of the ABB FIA Formula E Championship. Made to withstand extreme environments, conditions and terrains, the batteries will be compatible with Formula E-specification motors and produce a maximum power output of 470 kW (equivalent to approx. 630 bhp). Williams will put batteries into production, ready to provide teams with identical 54 kWh battery packs – to be used in the first two seasons of Extreme E.   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Tyler Swedensky is the new car manager at Future Ford in Sacramento, California, and he's good at what he does. With co-host Bruce Aldrich driving and me observing as a back- seat passenger, Swedensky recently took us for a test drive and preview of the 2019 Ford Edge ST. The 2019 Ford Edge ST is the manufacturer's new performance SUV. Image © Bruce Aldrich/2019 Ford is marketing the new vehicle as its first performance SUV, and Swedensky is our guest on this week's episode of The Weekly Driver Podcast. After our ride, Bruce and I asked our guest about the Edge ST from the offices of the Sacramento dealership. He explained the SUV's innovative Co-Pilot 360. It's a suite of standard driver- assist technologies. Features include a blind spot information system, lane keeping system, enhanced active park assist and automatic emergency braking with Pedestrian Detection. Ford motto's for the SUV: "The Edge ST has the feel of an SUV with the heart of a sports car." We also discussed with our guest the future of Ford as one of several manufacturers, emphasizing their SUV and truck lineups and shrinking or eliminating the sale of sedans. And we also discussed some of Ford's vehicles and what the manufacturer may do next. The Weekly Driver encourages and appreciates feedback from our listeners.
