It's time to recap the family Thanksgiving dinner. There were a lot of expectations, were they met? Kelly has a couple notes, Lizz has no notes but is quickly learning that the holidays with a toddler is MUCH different than the holidays with an infant.  With the holidays in full swing, Kelly has some December advice - don't delay the joy. Go full glam with the red lipstick. Rock the sparkle shirt. In that spirit, she's throwing a party for the women in her life, no kids and no husbands. But first to decide the correct appetizers and cocktails to serve.  Then, it's time for an apology. Specifically to anyone victimized by Lizz's bone broth hot chocolate. Who knew a simple drink would cause so much haters?  In advice, Kelly and Lizz have a question from a listener that is struggling with presents for her in-laws. Since the family is growing she wants to cut back on buying for the adults and do a secret santa. The rest of the family isn't into the idea. How should she go about Christmas drama free? Plus, a question on buyers remorse and if it's okay to trade in so soon.  The tea in Industry News is piping hot with the battle for Automatic Emergency Braking. NHTSA says a rule requiring them in all new cars will save countless lives but the auto industry is pushing back. Who will win?  Finally in the Ditch the Drive-Thru, Kelly is attempting to make pizza dough from scratch and so far not loving it. Dr. Matt Markel, Business Leader, Radar & Autonomy Expert with experience at Waymo and in the defense industry joined Grayson Brulte on The Road to Autonomy podcast to discuss the NHTSA mandate requiring AEB (automatic emergency braking) systems in all new light vehicles by 2029 and what impact this mandate will have on the development of autonomous vehicles. While the mandate doesn't specifically require LiDAR, Dr. Markel believes a radar+camera sensor fusion approach will likely be the dominant solution that automakers implement to meet this new regulation. He sees the mandate as a positive for wider adoption of radar, but doubts it will spur major radar technology breakthroughs since full autonomy (SAE Level 4) remains the real driver of sensor advancement.During the conversation, Dr. Markel raised concerns about the potential unintended consequences that the mandate could cause, such an increase in "false alarm" brake activations from the AEB systems detecting non-threats because of interference. If a driver finds the system not to be functioning correctly, the regulation restricts automakers from allowing drivers to disable the AEB system, which could create towing/repair headaches if the system suffers a failure. While the mandate aims to save lives, Dr. Markel argues the safety benefits will be small compared to the potential of full autonomy. He advises autonomy companies to "run their own race" and not be distracted by this regulation from their core SAE L4 missions which offer vastly greater safety upsides.Recorded on Tuesday, June 11, 2024Episode Chapters0:00 NHTSA AEB Mandate4:24 Radar Data Generation9:09 AEB Battery Draw12:49 Integrating Radar into a Vehicle Design 15:15 L3 vs L4 Debate24:26 Is the AEB Mandate a Distraction to L4 Goals?31:59 Unintended Consequences of AEB Mandate41:49 Impact of Slowing EV Sales on AEB Mandate42:57 Key Takeaways --------About The Road to AutonomyThe Road to Autonomy® is a leading source of data, insight and commentary on autonomous vehicles/trucks and the emerging autonomy economy™. The 135th State of the Fleet Industry video produced by Automotive Fleet offers insights into the state of the fleet market as presented by AF Editor Mike Antich. Today's topics include: The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) opened a formal investigation of a series of “phantom braking” incidents. On January 8, 2023, a class-action lawsuit was filed against Tesla, alleging that 2021 and 2022 Model 3 and Model Y were prone to stop suddenly due to the false triggering of the automatic emergency braking system. In the past four years, there have been a number of vehicles produced by various auto manufacturers recalled to correct primarily software issues with the automatic emergency braking systems for specific models. It is important for fleet managers to be aware of the possibility of phantom braking and to stay informed of the situation as new developments occur. "KUKA is implementing its comprehensive technological know-how as well as over fifty KUKA industrial robots to meet these demands, encompassing the supply, cleaning and measuring of the battery frames, checking the battery modules to be installed, application of the thermal compound, assembling and fastening the individual modules in the battery frame, electrical contacting, sealing and screwing on the housing cover, and finally the leak test and quality inspection at the end of the line."   https://www.kuka.com/en-de/press/news/2020/03/batterie-pack-linie   TESLA MODEL Y LENGTH, WIDTH, HEIGHT, WEIGHT, OFF-ROAD FEATURES EMERGE "Specs for the Tesla Model Y are finally available. Much cheaper than having to invest in another battery, use the one you have!   Dan from Canada I would put a fast charger at the French River Provincial Park in Ontario. There are currently no fast chargers between Parry Sound and Sudbury along Ontario Highway 69.   And then..."The new Ivy charging network is planning a fast charger at Key River, near French River Provincial Park!"   KARL CRAMER I'd love L2 chargers at the parking lot of my gym. You do the thing you're supposed to do and get a decent charge when you're done. I currently have a free charger a 10 minute walk away from my gym. I know, poor me.   MARK RICHARDS I would want a 350kW charge station in downtown Denver.  I drive uber, and sometimes need a boost.  I have a Bolt now, but will likely upgrade when GM comes out with some newer EVs, so I'll be able to take advantage of the higher speeds. I hope Charge Point is doing this for one lucky listener of yours, and I hope it is me.   BILL BURGAR I'd put 100s of 3pin sockets in long term parking at airports. All sockets limited to 6 amps i.e. enough to fully charge any car over a few days or a week while you are away - very cheap to do and ensures that there are spaces with sockets for everyone with an EV. Maybe do the same but with 13amps per socket for all railway station car parks.   GIL ROSADO I think my dream charger would be a charger that plugs into a standard wall outlet. To get around the slow charge speeds, it would actually be a battery that you leave plugged in all the time. When you hook up your car to it, it uses the charge in the battery to speed up the charging. You could install this charger anywhere where there is a standard wall outlet, and should be enough to charge your car fully overnight (8-10 hours) if you are charging at home.   DARREN FINDLAY  I’d like some chargers installed at work, even a few weather proof 3 pin plugs would be good. A trickle charge is better than nothing at all! I’d also like to see chargers in all public car parks. I’d even be happy to pay more to park in an area dedicated to electric cars – it may even cut down on the ice-ing issue!   Mia Oppelstrup In response to this week's question of the week, with no concern for cost the one place I'd like a (DC fast) charger is between two US landmarks that are currently impossible to drive between in an EV: Yellowstone National Park and Mount Rushmore. There is one Tesla charger but the way it's placed you still wouldn't quite make it to the park and back to the charger. In fact I think we may really need 2 DCFC to make the route feasible.   NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week…   Why do you think Tesla are quietly delivering the Model Y without the usual fanfare?   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 241 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Show #665   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 13th January 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   Oh my goodness! NEIL E ROBERTS AND LEANNE, FROM SUSSEX EVS, have increased their support! They were already EXECUTIVE PRODUCERS but that’s amazing, thank you.   400,000 GERMAN JOBS AT RISK IN SWITCH TO ELECTRIC CARS "The shift to electric vehicles could cost 410,000 jobs in Germany by 2030, daily Handelsblatt reported on Monday, citing government advisers." acccording to a Reuters report: "In engines and transmissions’ production alone, around 88,000 jobs will be at risk, the newspaper said, citing a report by the National Platform for the Future of Mobility (NPM), an advisory council for the government. Electric cars’ engines are made of fewer parts and require less maintenance than combustion engines, which will result in layoffs, the report was quoted as saying. Vehicle production will be further automated and will not be sufficient to support the current level of jobs, Handelsblatt said, citing NPM’s Chairman Henning Kagermann. In 2018, employment in the car industry in Germany reached 834,000, its highest since 1991."   https://www.reuters.com/article/us-germany-autos-emobility/more-than-400000-german-jobs-at-risk-in-switch-to-electric-cars-handelsblatt-idUSKBN1ZC0N2   VW CONFIRMS ID.3 WITH BIGGEST BATTERY SEATS ONLY FOUR "Thanks to Battery Life, we have learned a few new things about the upcoming Volkswagen ID.3, which will be handed to the first customers in Summer 2020." says INsideEVs: " Volkswagen says that it will manage to deliver cars in the Summer of 2020 and there is no change in the timingThe German manufacturer currently is producing the first batch of ID.3, which is stored on special parking lots and will be tested by the employees. Photos of such facilities were provided by the German EV rental company nextmove in its video. olkswagen has confirmed that the 1ST edition cars will be available only with single-zone climate control (the two-zone climate control will be available later). It was also confirmed that there will be no park-assist feature in the first edition cars (there are parking sensors and automatic emergency braking though). The biggest thing seems to be the news that the ID.3 will be a five-seater only in two battery versions: 45 kWh and 58 kWh, while the 77 kWh battery will be a four-seater. Moreover, the biggest battery pack can not be combined with a panoramic roof. The reason for that seems to be weight - it would be too high with the assumption of the fifth passenger."   LARGEST ELECTRIC SCHOOL BUS PROGRAM IN UNITED STATES LAUNCHING IN VIRGINIA From Cynthia at CleanTechnica: "Dominion Energy has partnered with local Virginia school districts to begin replacing diesel buses with 100% electric school buses in phases. No phase can come too soon, so CleanTechnica wishes all school districts a rapid rollout after the initial 50 launch the program. Children are more sensitive to air pollution than adults, and it hurts them and their studies." She writes: "The buses can be used as batteries for the grid or for electricity use off the grid as well. Dominion Energy shares, “When not in use, they can be tapped as an energy resource through vehicle-to-grid technology. If energy needs are high or if renewable resources are intermittent, the batteries can provide stability to the grid. During a power outage or emergency, the batteries could serve as mobile power stations.”1,050 electric buses could provide enough energy to power 10,000+ homes."   https://cleantechnica.com/2020/01/12/largest-electric-school-bus-program-in-united-states-launching-in-virginia/   ASTON MARTIN REPORTEDLY KILLS RAPIDE-E ELECTRIC CAR PROGRAM "After officially launching the “production version” of its first electric car last year, Aston Martin has now reportedly killed its Rapide-E electric car program." according to electrek: "The British automaker unveiled a prototype of a Rapide converted with an all-electric drivetrain, the “Rapide E,” back in 2015. Two years later, they started working with Williams Advanced Engineering, the tech division of the Williams Formula 1 team, to make the vehicle’s electric powertrain. Last year, we saw one of the first production prototypes of the Rapide E and Aston Martin officially launched the car at the Shanghai Auto show in April 2019. Now almost a year later, the company is reportedly canceling plans to produce the vehicle and it will instead shift the program into an EV research project."   https://ww.electrek.co/2020/01/13/aston-martin-rapide-e-electric-car-kill-program/#   UFODRIVE ADDS LONDON AND BERLIN TO TESLA RENTAL SERVICE "The electric car rental company UFODrive is expanding into further cities. The Tesla Model 3 and Model S are now available for rent at Potsdamer Platz in Berlin and at three London locations." reports electrive: "The electric vehicles are picked up and returned at fixed stations.   Anyone in Berlin who wants to rent an electric car for a day can now do so at Potsdamer Platz in the “Mall of Berlin” multi-story car park. The company has entered into a partnership with APCOA for this purpose. The Tesla Model 3 is now available in the parking garage for 99 euros and the Model S for 149 euros per day. The price always includes comprehensive insurance policy and three additional drivers. In London, UFODrive will initially start with three locations (Park Lane/Marble Arch, Oxford Circus and Westfield). In order to be able to offer the vehicles at fixed stations here as well, a partnership was entered into with Q-Park, among others. For the Tesla Model 3 a price of 109 pounds per day."   2020 NISSAN LEAF STARTS AT $31,600 "Nissan has announced the pricing for the 2020 Nissan Leaf in the United States. The 2020 Leaf comes in S, SV, and SL trims. The S and SV are offered in Plus versions with larger battery packs. The SL only comes in plus version. The cheapest 2020 Nissan Leaf is the Leaf S with the 40 kWh battery pack that will sell for $31,600 plus the $925 destination charge." according to Slashgear.com: "Moving into the Plus range sees the Leaf S Plus with a 62 kWh battery starting at $38,200. Leaf SV Plus starts at $39,750, and the Leaf SL Plus costs $43,900. There are some key changes made to all 2020 Leaf models, namely Nissan Safety Shield 360 is standard on all models. That includes Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, Rear Automatic Braking, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Blind Spot Warning Lane Departure Warning, and High Beam Assist. All Leaf models also get Intelligent Forward Collision Warning, Intelligent Lane Intervention, and Blind Spot Intervention for the 2020 model year."   https://www.slashgear.com/2020-nissan-leaf-starts-at-31600-13606641/   TESLA MODEL 3 PRICE DROP RESULTS IN SURGE OF ORDERS IN CHINA "The spike in interest from Chinese citizens also comes after Tesla announced an over $7,000 price decrease for its Made-in-China Model 3. The strategy was used by Tesla to undercut popular local automakers and fellow premium segment rivals in China." says Teslarati: "Twitter user and Tesla enthusiast @Ray4Tesla uploaded numerous photos of the Taiguhui Tesla Experience Center in Shanghai this past weekend, showing the location filled with people looking to order their electric vehicles. Reports from local media state that hundreds of Model 3s are being ordered at each store per day and 1,200 are being ordered in China daily."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-3-order-surge-china-price-drop/       NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week…   Which car company would you like to see doing more to embrace electrification? Wednesday 9th May 2018. TESLA ADDS NEW INTERIOR FINISH OPTION TO S & X For those buying a new Model S or Model X, and you'd be forgiven for thinking Tesla only make a Model 3 if you're reading the headlines, there are some tweaks showing up in the configurator. CNET reports: "A new update that applies to every Model S and X interior is the addition of a darker finish on interior accent trim pieces. There's also a new "Oak Décor" finish available in conjunction with the "Cream Premium" interior. The automaker told Electrek that the interior changes will be implemented starting today, and vehicles currently in the preproduction process will be included in the shift." Electrek adds: "the Cream Premium and Black textile option (last two) are now being made unavailable for the Model S and Model X performance models."   TESLA MODEL X SWEEPS AAA’S TOP GREEN VEHICLE AWARDS FOR 2018 Meanwhile, staying with those Teslas, AAA’s Top Green Vehicle Awards for 2018 has gone to the Model X in three categories. Teslarati report: "The all-electric SUV won the awards for Best Overall Green Car, Best Green Car Over $50,000, and Best Green SUV/Minivan. The Tesla Model S 75D earned AAA’s award for Best Large Car."   MODEL 3 NOW AUTO-DIMS And not to leave out the baby brother Model 3, there's a new firmware update to look out for. It's v8.1 and - round of applause - it's auto dimming lights. The option on the screen reads OFF, PARKING, ON or AUTO and then beneath that, AUTO HIGH BEAM. So it will adjust the lights according to its surroundings and ensure you don't dazzle oncoming drivers. There's also a toggle button on the screen to shift from streaming, to radio, to phone. Add that to the heated seats recently activated, and Automatic Emergency Braking.   MERCEDES EQC SPOTTED "The Mercedes-Benz EQ C has been caught waiting at a stoplight, which provided a great view of the upcoming electric crossover" according to an article by Motor 1. It comes from a minute long video posted on Youtube, and the car is in full camo. I must admit I did a double take because I would expect the SUV style of electric car to follow a common design language of having a short stubby front, or cab-forward as Jaguar’s design head honcho Ian Callum calls it, to maximise cabin space. However the shots which are supposed to be the EQC look make it look like a really long bonnet, or hood.   AUDI TARGETS 800,000 EV SALES BY 2025 As major car makers look to the next 5 to 7 years, for building platforms and supply chains, Audi wants to sell 800,000 full electrics and hybrids per year, by 2025. Reuters say: "Audi declined to provide details about how many fully battery electric, and how many hybrid cars it will sell by 2025. Last year, it sold about 16,000 semi-electric vehicles and it still lacks a fully electric model in its lineup. The Ingolstadt, Germany-based brand, which delivered 1.88 million cars globally in 2017 currently offers three plug-in hybrid vehicles. In August, Audi will launch the e-tron sport utility vehicle, its first all-electric model."   JAGUAR TO SUPPLY 200 ELECTRIC VEHICLES FOR CHAUFFEUR SERVICE AT HEATHROW AIRPORT 200 chauffeur-driven Jaguar I-PACE's will ferry passengers to and from the airport and, in the process, instantly create the largest chauffeur-driven fleet of electric vehicles in the UK. Heathrow already has one of the largest corporate electric vehicle fleets in the UK, and the highest density of charging infrastructure in Europe.   HIGH POWER CHARGING IN ALL FORMS WITH PROTERRA Maker of buses Proterra is getting in on the act of fast charging, with new solutions compliant with the latest standards up to 500kW, all buses using the CCS plug for charging. Some of the buses here in the UK use overhead charging too, in this case I think Proterra are talking about overhead conductive charging.   1 IN 5 AMERICANS SAY THEY'LL BUY AN ELECTRIC CAR "One in five Americans say they are likely to buy an electric car for their next new vehicle, according to a survey from AAA. That's up from 15% who said they were likely to buy an electric car last year." say CNN. The biggest reasons given were environment, then lower costs, and access to carpool lanes. And that's interesting because there was a survey earlier this year which surveyed existing EV drivers, and the Environment came further down the list of reasons they were driving them, with costs and performance at the top of the list.   ELECTRIC HIGHWAY FOR ITALY Italy is making a shift towards electrification, and the power company ENEL plans on installing 4,000 charging points across the country by 2022, 1,200 of which will be fast chargers. From Milan in the North down to Rome, drivers have chargers every 60mins of driving. Alberto Piglia, head of Enel's e-mobility unit, explained to CNN's Supercharged. "We know electric users like myself are mainly urban users, but we also want to move around for the weekends or travel around, so we've started to build infrastructure all around the country. Since last September people can go from Rome to Milan because we installed 30 charging points around the motorway. But we haven't stopped there because we are continuing to put infrastructure (so that) people are able to move around Italy" CNN continue: "Enel is investing between €100 million ($122 million) and €300 million ($366 million) in the project"   MARGOT ROBBIE IN NISSAN FILM And finally the Aussie actress Margot Robbie is the star of a new film for Nissan and the LEAF. Nissan said "[Margot] has composed an open letter to encourage people to make more sustainable energy choices. Margot, who performed the surfing sequence herself, is seen enjoying the early morning waves as she talks of creating a “better world for ourselves and everyone who comes after us”. Talking about the film, Margot said: “I hope I can play a small role in inspiring people across the globe to explore alternative forms of energy and make the switch to drive a better future for everyone. The point is, we can all make a difference and we don’t need to wait for others to do it for us.” Gareth Dunsmore, Electric Vehicle Director, Nissan Europe said: “Our LEAF and e-NV200 models are not only cleaner drives, they become mobile energy units too – the used batteries from these vehicles are put to good use as part of our xStorage energy storage solution which provides power to homes and even football stadiums across the world.”   I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested.
