Kyle says that painting allows him to express his viewpoint of our world. In 2010, Kyle moved with his family to Austin, Texas where he began seriously study oil painting under Elizabeth Locke. Here, Kyle learned the importance of having a solid foundation in the fundamentals to be a successful representational artist. Kyle also took workshops around the country with master artists to further his art education. He enjoys painting En plein air since it allows him to be immersed in the landscape during the process of creating. In 2016, Kyle held his first solo show with Wilcox Gallery. The show was successful and encouraged Kyle to consider art as a full time career after graduating. Kyle holds a BS in Geology from the University of Texas at Austin but chose to pursue art as a career. Kyle believes it reinforces the idea of making careful observations and seeking to understand these observations, a skill Kyle feels is extremely important in art.  Kyle's work has been exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions around the country, and has received several awards including the gold medal in the 30th annual Oil Painters of America National Show. Earlier this month, artists Mitch Baird, Eric Jacobsen, and Gabor met up at a Plein Air Painters of America convention. While there, they discussed why cultivating a crew of likeminded artists is so vital for the creative process. About the Artists: Eric Jacobsen was born and raised in New England. He received a BA in History from Gordon College in Wenham, MA in 1989 and studied fine art at the Lyme Academy of Fine Arts in Old Lyme, CT from 1991-1995. At the Academy he received training in the Beaux Arts tradition of drawing and painting from life. Eric's true inspiration is the amazing beauty that he sees in nature. Jacobsen is a “Plein Air” painter. He takes his oils wherever he goes, setting up on site, working until his painting is finished. Mitch Baird is a Signature Member of the following organizations: Oil Painters of America, American Impressionist Societ and current President of the prestigious Plein Air Painters of America (PAPA). As a representational painter he believes that painting is a celebration of life and the beauty that surrounds us. Seeking out this inspiration, Mitch works directly from life to capture the qualities and nuances of natural light and color harmony. He has a strong conviction that great artistic communication depends on solid draftsmanship, design and vision. Gàbor Svagrik presents Ralph Oberg, Matt Smith, Skip Whitcomb, and Dan Young in Four Directions - Common Paths. The Artful Painter has reached a new milestone: this is episode number 50. The first episode was published a little over two years ago in September of 2018 featuring artist Ralph Oberg. The idea to do this show began to form after I attended a week-long event sponsored by the Booth Museum in Cartersville and Plein Air Painters of America. I participated in two workshops during that PAPA event conducted by Matt Smith and Ralph Oberg. I also attended lectures given by Len Chmiel, Skip Whitcomb, Dan Young, and Jill Carver. It was a truly transformative event for me. It’s only fitting that In this episode I return to this show’s roots by featuring a delightful and inspiring conversation between four friends: Ralph Oberg, Matt Smith, Skip Whitcomb, and Dan Young. The conversation was recorded by Gàbor Svagrik - who also was an early guest of the Artful Painter. Gàbor and I reconnect and talk about his experience filming these four friends. I’m indebted to Gàbor for allowing me to share this conversation with Artful Painter listeners. Gàbor’s film also coincides with a special exhibition being held at the Steamboat Art Museum in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. The show title is Four Directions - Common Paths: Friendship, Inspiration, and Craft - A Thirty Year Connection. The show runs from December 4, 202o through April 10, 2021. It features 25 works each from Ralph Oberg, Matt Smith, Skip Whitcomb, and Dan Young. TJ Cunningham - The Wonder of Being in the Landscape (41)

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 16, 2020 92:00

TJ Cunningham grew up in Vermont in an area that was also a favorite place for Aldro Hibbard and Emile Gruppé to paint. If you have ever visited that part of Vermont as my wife and I did a few years ago, you probably call to mind the beautiful hills, mountains, woods, and streams. And nestled snuggly in that beautiful setting are the small farms graced with red barns and cozy homes that beckon to a simpler time. Just as Hibbard and Gruppé found inspiration among this landscape, so does TJ Cunningham. Though he no longer lives in Vermont, the intense desire to capture the beauty of the landscape continues to burn in his heart. I first met TJ Cunningham back in January of this year at the Booth Western Art Museum. He was one of the exhibiting artists of Plein Air Painters of the Southeast that was on display at that time at the Booth. On exhibit there was a hauntingly beautiful and moody painting by Cunningham called Near the Beaver Pond. On seeing that one painting, I knew I had to meet TJ and eventually have him on the Artful Painter. In this edition of the Artful Painter, TJ talks about what he drawn to paint, the importance of preparation before painting, and the unique tools and materials he uses. He discusses how outdoor painting is part of the preparation process. We also talk about his transition from gallery representation to his now being 100% self-representing in his home studio and his beautiful website. TJ was featured in the September 2014 issue of Southwest Art magazine in the series 21 Under 31: Young Artists to Watch in 2014. How true that admonition was, for today TJ’s paintings are an impressionistic tour-de-force. When you examine his paintings up close, you get a sense that TJ relishes not only a beautiful scene, but also the act of making the painting. In many ways looking at the surface of his paintings it’s not clear just how he made those gorgeous marks and textures. Using a variety of mark-making tools, he leaves a compelling mystery for the viewer to ponder. Each painting by TJ Cunningham exudes the wonder of being in the landscape. He became a fine art painter much later in life. The interest had always been there; however, painting remained in the background mostly as a hobby while he ran a successful web-based design and content production company. He and his team wrote software that glued together the intricate processes of businesses and commerce. Striving for the utmost in software quality and reliability, he envisioned each line of code as if it were a finely executed brush stroke of luscious oil paint in a masterpiece. After running his business several decades, Carl now focuses on creating fine art. Oil paint, canvas, and his easel have replaced the command line and software development tools he used for so many years. When working with clients, Carl always sought opportunities to express himself creatively. One such accomplishment was the opportunity to design the award-winning album cover for Trust, by musician Patrick O'Hearn. The album was nominated for a Grammy and received the “Best Album Cover Design” award from the National Association of Independent Record Distributors. Carl is also known as a filmmaker. Along with cinematographer Rick Delgado, Carl recently completed a beautiful and poignant documentary about the story of a local artisan who works with his hands to create beautiful works of art by turning wood on a lathe. The documentary is titled One of a Kind - Analog Made. Embracing the medium of podcasting, Carl produces two popular podcasts: Artful Camera is a podcast about digital and analog photography and filmmaking. This podcast has remained in Apple iTunes' top 200 podcasts in the visual arts category for nearly 9 years. The other podcast Carl produces is the recently launched Artful Painter - art lessons for artists, collectors and people who love art. It features interviews with several internationally known artists. Carl has studied with renowned landscape oil painters Matt Smith and Ralph O'Berg - both who are members of the Plein Air Painters of America group. Carl has also attended many lectures and demonstrations by artists Clyde Aspevig, Len Chmiel, Jill Carver, Dan Young, Kenn Backhaus, Scott Christensen, Christine Lashley, and Skip Whitcomb. Carl's artwork was featured in a month long exhibit at the Vine Cafe and Market located in Douglasville, Georgia. Several of Carl's large water lily series oil paintings were displayed by invitation at the Douglas County Museum of History and Art, also located in Douglasville. He was invited to exhibit at the Douglasville Cultural Arts Center's “Summer in the South” show (2019). Carl paints both outdoors and in the studio. Skip Whitcomb says the subject of a painting is the painting, not the subject itself! He reasons that the viewer will never see the actual subject. Therefore, we must make that painting as captivating and poetic as possible. It’s nothing more than paint on a canvas. This is what we attempt in its purest form. Skip states: “Once you internalize the language of painting, you never see the world the same way. It never leaves you. The veil of rational order is lifted and what hangs in the air are sensations of painted possibilities. On good days, some would call it poetry.” Skip Whitcomb resides in Colorado. He has received numerous awards for his landscape paintings in oil and pastel. At the 2017 Prix de West Show in Oklahoma City, for example, Skip was honored with the Donald Teague Memorial Award, for best work on paper. Skip is an active member of the Plein Air Painters of America. In fact, it was at PAPA event at the Booth Museum of Western Art that I first met Skip. In this episode of the Artful Painter, Skip shares his Five Principles of painting that each artist must master. His love of nature and geology are integral to his art-making. He is not a painter simply passing through the landscape of the American West, he lingers at each location, intently observing. Skip says his time outdoor painting is his opportunity to harvest ideas and concepts. Often visiting the same locations, these timeless places become like old friends who continue to delight you as you discover new things about them. Skip seeks purity of vision in his work. Bill Farnsworth, a fine art artist and illustrator residing in Venice, Florida, likes to start a story in his paintings, and let the viewer finish it. Imagine this scene: Your feet are tired from walking the beautiful streets of the Mediterranean island of Elba. Your palette is thirsty. Just ahead you see bright umbrellas signal the presence of a small street cafe. You decide it’s time to enjoy a refreshing drink under the cool shade of the cafe umbrellas while you rest your feet. As you approach to claim your seat - though you cannot see them - within the doors of the tiny cafe, workers clean and tidy up its cramped interior. You hear the sounds of clinks and clatter as they replenish and stock the pantry and refrigerator with the latest goods that arrived just before you eyed the cafe and decided to stop there. For just a moment you imagine you have lived here all your life. It is this story within a story that artist Bill Farnsworth seeks to imbue within his oil paintings. As a 1980 graduate of The Ringling School of Art and Design, Bill Farnsworth has spent more than 34 years as an Illustrator and Fine Artist. Born in Norwalk Connecticut in 1958, Bill spent most of his life painting landscapes of rural areas, while supporting himself and family as an illustrator. He has illustrated more than fifty books for children. Bill's extensive illustration experience provides a rich vocabulary for creating his beautiful, emotion-filled fine art paintings. He is a Signature member of The Oil Painters of America, and The American Society of Impressionists. He is also a Fellow in The American Society of Marine Artists. Bill is also an active member of Plein Air Painters of the SouthEast - having served a stint as its President. In our conversation today, Bill explains how he endeavors to paint what he loves and to convey that honestly so that viewer can feel it as well. Bill talks in-depth about the importance of painting on location and the importance of being a keen observer of the scene and life that happens in that place. The result? Heartfelt paintings emerge that are full of emotion. Kathie Odom lives in Knoxville, Tennessee – not far from the beautiful Great Smoky Mountain National Park. I first met Kathie and her husband Buddy almost two years ago at the Plein Air Painters of America workshop hosted by the Booth Museum in Cartersville, Georgia. She is an exuberant painter and enthusiastic student. Her paintings are filled with light and texture that capture the nostalgia and beauty of homes, buildings, farms, and landscapes scattered along smaller, less-traveled roads bypassed and unnoticed by hurried motorists barreling down crowded interstates. Her artistic vision helps us slow down and take note of the beauty of wherever she finds it. It's the landscape near her home that captures her heart. Scenes close to home are what she yearns to paint. Kathie’s development as a fine art painter was remarkably fast. She’s only been painting since 2009 – when at the age of 50 – she took her first painting workshop that was a gift from her husband. Ten years later, she was featured on the cover of the January 2019 issue of Southwest Art magazine and has been published in several other journals. She is a member of the Salmagundi Club, the American Impressionist Society, the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association, the Plein Air Painters of the Southeast, the Arts and Culture Alliance of Greater Knoxville, and Oil Painters of America. Matt Smith is an outdoor painter whose style may best be described as Impressionistic Naturalism. His lyrical brush work and impressionistic portrayal of light and shadow are informed by his love of the great outdoors. Matt earned a BFA from Arizona State University. Disillusioned with their focus on abstract painting and modern art, Matt turned his attention to instructors who embodied representational art that spoke to Matt's heart and vision. That's when his real education in painting began in earnest. His love of the outdoors naturally led to his embrace of plein air painting. His skills as an outdoor painter eventually led to him becoming a signature member of the Plein Air Painters of America group, and he is currently serving as PAPA's president. In this art lesson from Matt Smith, you will hear: Why Matt is reluctant to call himself an artist The value of painting outdoors How a photograph is a useful tool to a painter, but beware photography's limitations Mastering the fundamentals Laws vs. rules of painting Why an artist should ask if the subject is even worthy of painting Matt's new online video course What’s in Matt’s outdoor painting tool box Matt Smith's website: https://mattsmithstudio.com Matt Smith's online course Understanding Natural Light: http://www.tucsonartacademyonline.com/matt-smith-artist-instructional-video 2019 Master Workshop (Plein Air Painters of America): http://p-a-p-a.com/page/11071/2019-master-workshop-scottsdale-artists-school-scottsdale-az The Artful Painter website: https://theartfulpainter.com
