In this episode of The Real ResQ Podcast, host Jason Quinn is joined by Joe Sarber, a firefighter from Georgia. They discuss Sarber's journey to becoming a firefighter. He shares a story about his first structure fire and all the rookie mistakes he made. He also discusses the challenges and lessons he learned from these experiences, highlighting the importance of teamwork and continuous learning in the fire service. Sarber tells about a rescue he and his team pulled out of an active fire. They had to go into the house, find the victim, and pull the victim to safety. They accomplished this task and their rescue earned him a Public Safety Appreciation Award from the Paulding County Board of Commissioners. Sarber talks in great detail about the trench rescue call he responded to as a firefighter. He describes the challenges and dangers involved in it and the specialized training required to execute these types of rescues. Sarber explains how they called in a neighboring county's department with a semi truck setup for trench rescue to assist. He recounts the process of shoring up the walls and using a vacuum truck to remove dirt around the patient. The rescue involved cutting holes in the walls of two houses under construction to create a lifting point. When Hans Rueffert learned he had gastric stomach cancer at age 33, he had to have half of his stomach and half of his esophagus removed, followed by chemotherapy and radiation treatment. However, because gastric juices were leaking into his lungs, he subsequently had to undergo surgery removing both his stomach and esophagus in full. It was a battle, but Hans achieved survivorship. He has to watch what he eats and how much he eats, but Hans has resumed his life as a chef, and is an active participant in competitive pickle ball.

What Deb Krier thought was a routine mammogram turned into a Stage Zero diagnosis of breast cancer. Stage Zero became Stage III, which was upgraded to Stage IV HER 2+ invasive breast cancer. Deb opted for a double mastectomy with no reconstruction. She was subsequently diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma, then papillary thyroid cancer. Through 33 surgeries, she has survived all three cancers.

Be reminded of why you are called to be a Gospel-motivated voice for life!Melanie's Bio:Melanie Standiford is a life long Nebraska girl, born on an Army base in Texas after her dad was in Vietnam. At one month old Melanie and her parents went to their home in Nebraska where the family grew with two more daughters. Melanie has nine biological children and four bonus children from a second marriage. She homeschooled for years and was a freelance journalist and professional portrait photographer before deciding to encourage her children by finishing her associate degree at age 30. It became a bit of a challenge between her and her children to keep going in her own studies, particularly with her son Lukas. She would get her bachelor degree before he graduated high school, her master degree before he graduated college and so on. She got a Bachelor of Science in Leadership in 2017, and a Master of Science in International Security and Intelligence in 2019. She is now a PhD student in Forensic Psychology. A fun side note, Lukas graduated with his Bachelor degree in Criminal Justice in 2022 and is now a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army stationed in Georgia USA. She has stories similar about all her children too numerous to share. In 2017 Melanie started a job with KNOP-TV, a GRAY Media station in Nebraska as a multimedia journalist. In 2017, Melanie lost her mom to cancer. In December 2019, she lost her oldest daughter, 25-year-old Brooklynne and her unborn baby (she was 8 months pregnant). COVID hit right after that and by May 2020 Melanie was the News Director of the television station in North Platte. She continued to edit, produce, report, plus take on all the sole responsibilities of managing the station. With over 700 published stories, approximately 30 of those written over the years by Melanie were about the abortion topic, each of which were acceptable to be published and considered non biased. In fact, local prolife groups thought she was pro choice because she was careful to quote both sides. In September 2022 a Nebraska news outlet included her activities from her small Nebraska town (as a private citizen not as a journalist) in their coverage of towns looking to possibly become “Sanctuary Cities for the Unborn.” When the article made its way across her employer's desk Melanie was fired for “practicing partisan politics.” A week after being fired, each of the stories Melanie wrote on the topic of abortion in any manner was removed from the Gray Media websites. Melanie now manages her own media platform called, Midwest Media by Melanie, covering a plethora of Nebraska issues and topics and when faced with the topic of abortion she is unapologetically pro life. She believes 100% and without exception that life begins at conception and is precious through natural death. Melanie lives in Curtis, Nebraska with her husband Shawn and four youngest children still at home, Louie, Giavanna, Kael, and Houston. “Who is this stranger?” A college student in Georgia (USA) asked that question when a fellow student texted him saying a DNA test showed they could be brothers. Separated by adoption almost twenty years earlier, the young man texted a reply in which he asked what name the other student had been given at birth. He immediately answered, “Tyler.” Replied the other, “Yes!!! You are my brother!” Recognized by his name!Consider how a name plays a key role in the Easter story. As it unfolds, Mary Magdalene comes to Christ’s tomb, and she weeps when she finds His body missing. “Woman, why are you crying?” Jesus asks (John 20:15). She didn’t recognize Him, however, until He spoke her name, “Mary” (v. 16).Hearing Him say it, she “cried out in Aramaic, ‘Rabboni!’ (Which means ‘Teacher’)” (v. 16). Her reaction expresses the joy believers in Jesus feel on Easter morning, recognizing that our risen Christ conquered death for all, knowing each of us as His children. As He told Mary, “I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God” (v. 17). In Georgia, two reunited brothers bonded by name, vowing to take “this relationship to the next level.” On Easter, we praise Jesus for already taking the utmost step to rise in sacrificial love for those He knows as His own. For you and me, indeed, He’s alive!

Jones was the first author on the paper titled “Seroprevalence and molecular detection of Anaplasma marginale-infected beef herds in Georgia, USA”, which was published in The Bovine Practitioner Volume 56 Number 2 (2022). We review the transmission, clinical signs, and diagnostic tests for bovine anaplasmosis. The objective of the study was to conduct and compare seroprevalence and molecular detection of Anaplasma marginale-infected beef herds in Georgia and to identify herd risk factors associated with A. marginale-positive herds. Blood samples were collected from 1,059 adult beef cattle (≥ 2 years) from 33 herds. Overall, 8.12% of cattle and 42% of herds were cELISA antibody-positive. Seventy-seven percent of plasma samples from a subset of corresponding seropositive samples (n = 73) were PCR-positive. Jones reviews the risk factors associated with bovine anaplasmosis and how veterinarians can become involved in prevention and control programs for their clients. Education is important because 27% of the survey respondents were not aware of the disease even with a high percentage of herds positive. "How do you know that you're talented at something? At some point you encountered it or you were around it and you felt the pull, the drive towards it. Some people have it very early on. And other people do not. And the question of how do you know what works for you is a very big one. And partly it has to do with the opportunities that you have, the house you grew up in, and so on. And that's not to say that those are determining factors because there are plenty of examples of people who didn't come from any sort of background of artistry and then went on to become incredible artists. And the same for the sciences.So, how to identify it is really based on what you encounter in the world and what you're aware of, and your awareness of your own skills. But for anyone who takes to art, they just understand that when you first did it or the early encounters with it were a sort of almost spiritual phenomenon. This is also true of scientists. They feel like they're part of something larger and it's impossible to define it for any one person, but you know it when you're in it. You discover for yourself that when you're writing a diary at night, that when you twist the words a specific way, it gives you incredible joy. And then you realize that this is your own private thing, that you can do really well, and you choose to pursue it more and more. But I think one way to do it is when they're young enough to sort of expose children to as many different things as possible."Anna Abraham, Ph.D. is the E. I am cutting back on the frequency of podcast episodes released to (hopefully) one per month. I first heard about prison meetings from a member who started prison contact through the Gideon Society in Georgia. He told me that I would have to take a course in order to qualify to enter prisons. I then heard from a prison chaplain who was running a number of recovery programs that he would be interested in running an SA program too. At the time I was corresponding with a fellow in that same prison and he encouraged me to go ahead and take the course. When the chaplain invited me, I went ahead and enrolled. The course oriented us onto the rules of the prison and how to handle prisoners' requests. I sent some White Books to the chaplain and he allowed members to meet, discreetly, in a conference room in his office. I was never able to make any of their meetings because they were at 12 noon which clashed with my work, and then COVID started.

We're celebrating! The Bees with Ben podcast has reached 100 episodes. And the 100 th episode is very special, being co-hosted Dan Curless from Curless Aussie Apiaries. Our distinguished guest is Bob Binnie of the Blue Ridge Honey Company from Northeast Georgia in the US. Bob has been a commercial beekeeper since 1981; after reading a book on bees he was introduced to a commercial beekeeper and pollinator in Oregon and the rest is history. He is a past President of the Georgia State Beekeepers Association as well as the Northeast GA. Mountain Beekeepers Association and the Macon County Beekeepers Club. In 2003, he was voted the Georgia State Beekeeper of the Year. Bob runs over 2,000 colonies; he also teaches beekeeping and is a popular guest speaker, as well as having a popular YouTube channel. The Blue Ridge Honey Company is a family business; Bob manages the apiary while his wife Suzette handles shipping and administration. Honey, pollen and beeswax products are offered for sale; the honey is pure, natural and raw and is not pasteurised or micro-filtered. Varieties include Sourwood, Tupelo, Orange Blossom, Gallberry, Tulip Poplar, Purple Starthistle and Wildflower. Obviously, the recent varroa incursion in Newcastle is foremost in the minds of Australian beekeepers at the moment, and although no-one would wish the varroa mite on their worst enemy, it is appropriate in one sense that this constitutes our 100 th episode, as Bob's experience and advice makes for essential listening. Combatting varroa is a complex, expensive and labour intensive process, as demonstrated by the excerpts that follow, but to get the most out of this podcast, you really need to listen to the whole thing. Bob starts with some sobering comments about the varroa invasion in the US. He says that initial attempts to eradicate the mites were ‘absolutely unsuccessful' and that colonies were killed, and beekeepers forced out of business before the authorities threw up their hands and said, ‘You're on your own.' Bob doesn't think we can stop varroa here in Australia, but is certainly of the opinion that it is a good idea to get educated ‘ahead of the game' and be prepared before it turns up In our apiaries. It is immediately apparent that Bob's integrated pest management programme has been the result of a lot of research, thought and experimentation. For example, varroa often wipes out colonies in winter, but he treats his hives well beforehand around August 1, the idea being that he is treating the bees that will raise the winter bees. Oxalic acid vaporisation only kills mites that are on bees, not brood, so this is applied twice in early to mid-winter during the broodless period. Bob has used Apivar (active ingredient is amitraz) and Apiguard (active ingredient is thymol) effectively for his early August treatments, but the latter is temperature sensitive. Apivar in particular is very expensive (Bob's bill three years ago was $18,000 US) and some colonies are now starting to show resistance to amitraz. Bob is not a fan of Apistan; its active ingredient, fluvalinate, proved very effective early on, but the mites quickly became resistant. Fluvalinate has a very long half life and will persist in comb for many years; it can also pose problems when mixed with other chemicals. This is an extremely informative podcast that should be listened to in its entirely. And it's not all doom and gloom. Bob says that beekeepers in the US had to learn the hard way, but we need not ‘go down fast' as there is now so much information available to help.

Jane Lo, Singapore Correspondent speaks with Dr. P.J. Blount, Lecturer in Law in the School of Law and Politics at Cardiff University. Dr. P.J. Blount (Ph.D., M.S., Global Affairs, Rutgers University; LL.M., King's College London; J.D., University of Mississippi; B.A./A.B.J., University of Georgia) is a Lecturer in Law in the School of Law and Politics at Cardiff University. He has served as an adjunct professor for the LL.M. in the Air and Space Law at the University of Mississippi School of Law. Previously, he was a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Luxembourg, an adjunct professor at Montclair State University, and a Visiting Scholar at the Beijing Institute of Technology School of Law. He also completed an industrial fellowship sponsored by the Luxembourg National Research Fund wherein he split his time between SES and the University of Luxembourg research cybersecurity issues relevant to the space industry. Blount's primary research areas are international space law with a focus on space security and cyberspace law and governance. He has published and presented widely on the topic of space law and has given expert testimony on Space Traffic Management before the U.S. House of Representatives' Subcommittee on Space. His book, Reprogramming the World: Cyberspace and the Geography of Global Order, was published open access with e-International Relations Press in 2019. He is an editor of the Proceedings of the International Institute of Space Law and was formerly the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Space Law. He currently serves as the Executive Secretary of the International Institute of Space Law and is a licensed attorney with the State Bar of Georgia (USA). In this podcast, Dr Blount introduces the historical and political context of the Outer Space Treaty which was negotiated in 1967. Despite the technological advances since then, Dr Blount argues that the treaty, in his view, is technologically neutral, where the intent is for it to “apply to everything” and “embrace all sorts of technologies”. Nevertheless, technological developments force us to rethink our understanding of security. While cybersecurity adds a layer of complexity, he notes that “cybersecurity laws and regulations are not usually the answer to our problems in cybersecurity”. However, he stresses that, cybersecurity being a risk management process means there are legal implications. For example, for a university Cube Sat, he explains how cybersecurity may play a part in the licensing and authorising process – that is, the extent of cybersecurity and risk management plans could depend on its payload and orbital dynamics. On whether space sector should be designated as a critical infrastructure, Dr Blount advocates for more definitions, noting the potential for burdening such satellites as the educational ones with unnecessary regulations. Where laws provide few details in how to secure assets for space sector operators, Dr Blount suggests that standards such as those developed by NIST for Commercial Satellite Operations serve as actionable guidance.
