Podcast Show Notes and Links: https://ukuleleunderground.com/2020/12/tll-podcast-133-uus-2020-gift-guide/ We're making a list, and we're checking it twice. We're going to find out what are UU's top gifts for this Holiday Season. The guys bring recommendations for stocking stuffers, diy presents, practical tools, and top shelf gifts. The team starts out with suggestions for tuners, fretboard Oil, and general Uke care products. This leads to Aldrine pitching his Idea for Ukulele Loot Crates. More pragmatic gifts like strings, polish cloths, and humidifiers are discussed before going into the top Ukulele and Music books. Aldrine offers a sentimental DIY alternative to music books, and gives his top gift for a Ukulele Player (a UU+ Subscription). Kahai proposes Audio Recorders or Audio interfaces for the Uke Player who already has everything. Effects Pedals are introduced as a fun gift for Uke Players with plug in Ukuleles. The guys wrap up the podcast by answering the question, "Does the aging of wood really affects the sound of the ukulele?"
Podcast Show Notes and Links: https://ukuleleunderground.com/2020/12/tll-podcast-132-electric-uke-divination/ This Week, the gang delivers powerful Psychic Divination on the future of the Solid Body Electric Uke. Aldrine states the changes in playing to accommodate the progress of Solid Body Ukes, Aaron divines who it will be that will take the instrument to new heights, and Kahai forecast what builders need to do to make the Electric Ukulele better than ever. The team takes a break from being psychics to open and react to maple candies they received from the community. Some positive feedback is offered to a Student Review and a Song Challenge Submission. Members ask how to choose a thumb pick, and where the thumb pick should be positioned on your finger? A winner is chosen for the Songwriting Challenge, and a new Challenge is set. The lesson is topped off with a discussion about Popular Karaoke Songs in Asia, New Lessons Announcements, the Merch Store Restock, and a Holiday Coupon Code.

Podcast Show Notes and Links: https://ukuleleunderground.com/2020/11/tll-podcast-131-listening-for-the-turkey/ How do you Listen for the Tur"Key" of a song? The team explains their process for using your ear to find the key of a song, and how you practice to build this skill. But first, the guys have to make their weekly 90's reference, and discuss the Ukulele Friends' Podcast they were just on. Next they answer a member's question on transposing Video Game Music, and share their favorite Video Game Musicians. Aldrine explains why you want to keep your barre chords straight in a student review. A question about building your song repertoire sends the boys down a deep rabbit hole. Aldrine breaks down his two song per week methodology, kahai suggest not overlooking simple songs, and Aaron gives the age old wisdom of, "enjoy the process." The guys finally explain how to figure out a song's key. They discuss how everyone starts off slow, and how learning the "wrong" notes are just as important as learning the "right". UU reveals their songs that they pulled from thin air. At the end of the podcast, a new giveaway is announced, and a reminder that we won't be here next week is made.
Podcast Show Notes and Links: https://ukuleleunderground.com/2020/11/tll-podcast-130-high-gs-apologies/ This Week's Podcast starts off with a Public Apology from Aldrine. Mistakes were made in one of the previous Live Lessons, and Aldrine now knows the difference between a Major9 and an Add9 Chord. With that weight off his chest, Aldrine demonstrates and explains the reggae strum. He also introduces the term, Skank, and the whole UU Team explains why it helps to feel the "Skank" or "Groove" of the song. A student review leads the guys to reveal their Beatles Hot Take. A member asks about how you might emphasize strumming differently for low and high G ukes? This starts a tangent on why people own so many different instruments. The podcast ends with the boys offering some suggestions for the E/Barre Chords, and Aldrine giving some sage advice, "Just hold it down."
Podcast Show Notes and Links: https://ukuleleunderground.com/2020/10/tll-podcast-129-song-practice-routine/ This Week Aldrine breaks down how he would personally practice a song. Before he does, the team reviews the Songwriting Challenge Submissions and pick a winner for the giveaway. A new Songwriting Challenge is set using the same formula as the last one. The words the guys choose for this challenge are "interesting" to say the least. There are some slight tangents with Kahai explaining what Li Hing Mui is, and Aldrine explaining his Liliko`i Turkey recipe. One of the bonus challenges steers the discussion into how to use a minor and Add9 chord substitution. Aldrine demonstrates how he would divide a 30 minute practice into 4 parts: Chords, Groove, Line By Line, and Key/Scale exercises. He also shows how you can keep your practices interesting and how you can expand upon the song you are practicing. The podcast is topped off with a question about transferring Guitar Riffs to Ukulele, and an announcement that there will be no Live Lesson, 1 on 1 Coaching and Jam next Week. The team should be back the following week (November 12th). See you then!
Podcast Show Notes and Links: https://ukuleleunderground.com/2020/10/tll-podcast-128-chuck-vs-chunk/ It's the Final Showdown: Chuck VS Chunk! Which is the "Right" technique? The answer may surprise you. Before the team settles this debate, they review a student, and give their thoughts on why she is doing so well. Aldrine takes some pride in being the "General Practitioner" of the Ukulele world, and gives some recommendations to more "Specialized" professionals. A tip on recording yourself or practicing in the mirror leads the guys to question if there really are Right and Wrong Techniques. Kahai suggest you expand your technique toolbox, and instead of throwing techniques away, store them for later. A recap of Aldrine being on an online Ukulele Festival reminds him of his Music Teacher. Aldrine and Kahai reminisce their Highschool Band Days and compare it to the movie, Whiplash. Finally, UU sets the record straight on Chucking VS Chunking, and end with some other Musical Buzzwords that may have been misinterpreted by the Ukulele Community.

Podcast Show Notes and Links: https://ukuleleunderground.com/2020/10/tll-podcast-126-the-tale-of-4-grips/ What is the Best way to Hold a Chord? The UU Team tries to answer this conundrum on this week's Live Lesson, but first, Aldrine explains what the "Bling" is hanging from his Headstock. The guys remind everyone what the Songwriting Challenge is, and encourages everyone to write something even if it isn't going to be a Masterpiece. A member is having trouble switching from Bm to Em, so Aldrine shows 4 different grips that are often overlooked when learning chords. Aaron explains how he works around this problem by using his Palm to Support the ukulele, and using the full chord shapes. Kahai brings up that every chord change is different. The same member asks why barring only two strings of the Bb chord is the norm. The Team reveals that there isn't one best way to hold a chord, and justifies why you would want to learn multiple ways to hold the same chord. When someone asks Aldrine how to do the reggae strum, Aldrine uses the analogy of a door opening to demonstrate the timing. Raking is brought up, and along with it, the guys do a deep dive into the genealogy of Guitar and Ukulele players. The Podcast ends with a Student Review, and a discussion about balancing the things you want to learn, and the things you should learn.
Podcast Show Notes and Links: https://ukuleleunderground.com/2020/10/tll-podcast-125-jubilant-october-sky/ We're back in our new Studio for another Live Lesson Podcast. A new type of Songwriting Challenge leads the guys to come up with their own Mandela Effect. We'll see how many UUers write songs about October Skies, and how many write about October Afternoons. Before the new Challenge is made, the team helps someone who brought up the observation that uke covers seem to use more 7th chords than guitar covers. The discussion strays slightly into difficult chords and how difficulty is subjective. Aldrine offers some advice for a Student Review, but is more reflective on how much this Student improved by performing publicly. Praise is given for those who completed the last Songwriting Challenge before the guys come up with the new Challenge. The podcast ends with some talk of new Play Alongs, and the accuracy (100%) of older Play Alongs.
Join the community! https://linktr.ee/projectenacity
Podcast Show Notes and Links: https://ukuleleunderground.com/2020/09/tll-podcast-124-the-new-uu-studio/ The gang is coming to you LIVE from the New UU Studio. Even though it's a new studio, the guys are still answering questions, and giving advice. The first question they get is about Kanile'a's Mahogany (back and side) ukulele, and how it compares to Koa ukuleles. A member's asks about doing the roll and releasing your fingers in the opposite order. Aldrine reveals that the secret to getting a natural roll is actually the up strum. If the UU Team is talking, you know there has to be one detour into food. The guys come back to ukulele with a couple of student reviews. They suggest one student learn the music more thoroughly, and the other focus on the details. There are a few last minute questions about strings before the team reveals their latest songs.
Podcast Show Notes and Links: https://ukuleleunderground.com/2020/09/tll-podcast-123-no-excuses/ While this week's podcast starts off simple enough with a question about tapping your feet, it soon devolves into topics like rhythm games, tiny ukuleles, cheap instruments, and why there are No Excuses for not playing ukulele. The guys try to help a member with tapping his feet and keeping rhythm to fast songs. A brief look at the new UU HQ and Aldrine's office set up brings up the discussion of too small ukes and too big hands. Our own, Aaron Nakamura acts as the shining example that the Musician makes the Instrument. This leads into a few questions about transitioning from Guitar to Ukulele. The guys take a major detour with talks about Jason Mraz, Billie Eilish, and Travis Scott. The podcast ends with the team coming up with a new Play Along idea, and Aldrine doing a throwback to an old Play Along.
Join the community! https://linktr.ee/projectenacity
Podcast Show Notes and Links: https://ukuleleunderground.com/2020/09/tll-podcast-122-stay-grounded/ The UU Team brings back a couple of trends from past podcast. Aldrine sparks some old school "Tech Talk" when he shows his new Mic. The microphone discussion evolves to include pickups, cables, and grounding issues. After the "Tech Talk" has been exhausted, the guys offer advice to a couple of students who are already on the right path. Songwriting Submissions are due, so Aldrine announces what the Songwriting Challengers have won. Whhile setting the new Challenge, Kahai and Aldrine explain why saving and showing half finished songs is valuable. Aldrine brings back the Two Chord Challenge from last year, and Aaron inspires a bonus chord Challenge from his last song submission. Talking about simple songs reminds the group about one of their favorite Jam Spots on Oahu, and the musicians they got to play with.
Podcast Show Notes and Links: https://ukuleleunderground.com/2020/09/tll-podcast-121-frustration-practice/ What should you do when you get Frustrated during Practice? Magic Mike Odo is back to help a member with this problem, and offer his wisdom. The podcast starts off with Aldrine showing some found treasures from his parent's house. During a Student Review, the guys remind the importance of being relaxed and calm. Mike makes a slight deviation into Music History and the evolution of harmony. Aldrine's asks Mike if he remembers when he changed Aldrine's career (for the better). From there, the team discuss how effects should compliment your playing, and not be used to hide your deficiencies. With EVERYONE'S songs prepared this week, the team show each other what they came up with. Mike offers his thoughts on the songs, and some last minute Music Theory Vocabulary.
Podcast Show Notes and Links: https://ukuleleunderground.com/2020/08/tll-podcast-120-memorabilia-wishlist/ There's no way the guys would go off on a tangent, and talk about what TV Show Memorabilia they wish they could own, right? That would never happen with this Ukulele Focused Podcast, but if you do like those kinds of talks stick to the end of the podcast. The team tries to help a member who's worried about how loud his strumming is. While Aldrine offers some practical advice with changing the curl of your finger, Aaron suggests not overthinking and focusing on having fun first. Next month's song lesson is brought up, and the guys start talking about the Uke Legend, Troy Fernandez. When the discussion shifts to some of the challenges of making UU videos, Kahai and Aaron share some insight on how the "Sausage is made". A question about using an amp to practice reminds Aldrine of the original reason he stopped using effects pedals. Everyone gets one pass; Aldrine uses his to ask for an extension on the Songwriting Challenge. The podcast is ended with a nice surprise and unboxing from a member.
Podcast Show Notes and Links: https://ukuleleunderground.com/2020/08/tll-podcast-119-drive-around-the-wall/ What happens when you Hit the Wall? You Drive Around It. In this week's podcast, the team discuss approaches you can take when you don't know where to go, and why there's always something new to work on. Aaron gives a tip on improving your right and left hand coordination. Kahai explains why it's ok to work on a song for a long time, and how you should build up to hard songs. Aldrine shares an exciting release from Jake, and talks about Master Teacher, Bruce Shimabukuro. This leads to a conversation on how even Masters need to "Wash their Belts" from time to time. The podcast is topped off with some student reviews, and a question about how long a beginner should spend learning music theory.
Podcast Show Notes and Links; https://ukuleleunderground.com/2020/08/tll-podcast-118-groovy-karaoke/ This Week's Podcast starts off with a very Impressive Student Review. The team also announce who won the "Ukulele Tattoo" contest from last week. A new Songwriting Challenge is set unusually early for the Live Lesson. The Guideline for the Challenge is easy, but the bonuses should make for some interesting song submissions. Talking about Key Modulations brings up the topic of what makes a Groovy Karaoke Song? A member asks the guys for their opinions on Abalone inlays and rosettes, and Aldrine gets to show off his fancy tuning pegs. Someone asks how to teach children to strum, so Aldrine shows how to play with groove instead of a strumming pattern. This leads the guys into sharing stories of when their parents inadvertently made them hate certain songs. Podcast Show Notes and Links: https://ukuleleunderground.com/2020/08/tll-podcast-117-matching-uu-tattoos/ This week, the guys play connect the dots by connecting Harmonics to Tiny Whisk and Tattoos. The podcast starts off on topic with a Student Review. Aldrine suggests the Student pay more attention to the angle their fingers are picking the strings. Kahai gives the tip to play the note instead of looking for the note. Aaron advises emphasizing the first beat to better feel the Triplet Rhythm of the song. They also talk about the cons of using the wrong string set for a different tuning. An audience member asks where they can get Aldrine's New String Sets? Aldrine answers, and reminds everyone about the new Play Along Channel. Aaron and Aldrine explain the reasoning behind the new channel, and what may be coming to it. The thread starts to unwind when someone asks Aldrine to review Harmonics again. He explains a few ways to play Harmonics, and a new approach that he's been experimenting with. The gang relates these High Level Techniques to specific tools for just the right job (like a Tiny Whisk). This leads to Kahai talking about Chefs who get tattoos of cooking utensil, and what the ukulele player's equivalent would be. The podcast ends with UU discussing what tattoos are cool, and what tattoos they would get. Aldrine also opens up a chance for listeners to win new AGxAQ Strings if they have an Ukulele related tattoo. Email Questions, or Pictures of Your Ukulele Tattoos to Questions@ukuleleunderground.com
Learn how you can Transpose easily by playing Simon with the Circle of 5ths. A question leads the guys to discuss Transposing, 5ths, Movable chords, and even some 90's Games. Another member asks for the Magic Secret to Pinky Mutes. When someone asks Aldrine if he plays low G, he gives some hidden examples that people may not be aware of. At the end of the podcast, Aldrine spends some time talking about unique ukuleles in his collection and where around the world they may be. How do you add more to a song without overcrowding it? You Pan for Diamonds. The UU guys explain what "Panning" means, and how adjusting the Pan of an instrument can add depth to your song. Before that, they review a couple of Student Reviews, and give Feedback. Aldrine gives advice on keeping a Steady Tempo. Kahai suggests working on Consistent Fingerpicking. Aaron reminds everyone to look back and think about how much you've improved. Giving advice on Arranging, Mixing, and Panning, the team start to talk about how Listening will make you a better Musician. One UU+ member asks, "what do you to do when you Plateau?" UU explains how there's always more to learn, and how learning music is a Journey not a Goal. Aldrine asks Kahai a hypothetical, "if you have to pick between Adam Neely and Jacob Collier?" Aaron tops off the podcast by talking about the Creative Itch, and how Failure is normal for everyone. This Week, the podcast is filled with a variety of subjects. The guys start off by discussing how to define Skill Levels. Aldrine states the importance on not letting labels like Beginner or Intermediate define you. Aaron explains how learning music is more like Growing a Tree. Everyone needs a Foundational Base, but you can choose how to Branch Off. A member asks about Calluses which leads Aldrine to talk about what he's doing to keep his calluses, and new things he's been Practicing since lockdown. The same member asks about alternatives for tapping your foot to Keep Time. The team answers with a conversation about Feeling Rhythms in different ways, and using your whole body to Feel the Beat. Kahai plays his Anime Inspired Live Lesson opening song, and the podcast is finished with some book and string recommendations for Baritone Players. They also discuss balancing Audience Request, and how to handle "Persistent" Audience members. Continuing their ongoing Nicktoons talk, Aldrine shows off his latest 90's Memorabilia. Irresistible You: Lose the Emotional Weight | Body Image | Confidence | Weight Loss
I spent so many years binge eating my way through November and December, vowing to start over again in the new year. When the new year came around I was already 15 pounds heavier because of that decision. How many years have you binged your way through November and December? It’s like “I’m nowhere near my goal weight and I can’t change much in two months or one month, so fuck it. I’ll just get back on the wagon in January.” Except that’s what you tell yourself every year…so you essentially are gaining and losing the same 15 pounds over and over again and beating yourself up because you feel like a failure. Listen. It’s not so much about the abundance of holiday comfort food that leads to the weight gain. It’s about the emotional bullshit that comes up when Aunt Betty makes passive aggressive comments about your weight in front of the entire family. It’s about your asshole drunk uncle and his off-color remarks that fill you up with embarrassment and rage. It’s about feeling obligated to buy gifts for people who don’t really give a shit about you. It’s about you not actually enjoying the holiday season because of all that. Dive into this episode to learn how to stop losing control during the holidays. Podcast Shownotes: https://awesomers.com/157 How about a little humility? Too often we see people showing off private jets, fancy cars, and projecting this lifestyle that IMPLIES that they have arrived. And how did they "arrive"? They were super smart and you should listen to them, better yet, send them some money and you can have what they have. However, rarely does those brag posts show the debt that the person is in. These modern millennial show-offs remind me of one of the original BS artists from America's so-called "Greatest Generation." Many people believe that TOM VU one of the clearest example of scam presentations ever. My point is that the current version of these are those ding dongs you see parading around on their private jets, posting every 3 hours them drinking champagne with the pretty people, or some other variation of illustrating that YOU suck and they are winning. The truth is often far different. My experience shows me that Zig Ziglar, as usual, is right on the money. Start from a place of NOT knowing. Start from a place of humility. Even if you have knowledge or skills about the topic at hand, set aside your bias and your preconceived notions and prepare to learn by accepting new input. Your ability to compare data, gather potentially new information is significantly impaired if you don't take the time to step back and prepare for a paradigm breaking moment. Now, many times, your guy is right and as you discuss whatever the current situation is, or occasional crisis, you may know the right answers before hearing all of the data. In addition to keeping yourself open for a potentially new and paradigm-shifting breakthrough you are allowing your team to share their views and inputs. THAT is leadership. THAT is necessary. The best people do want to follow, but they want to feel like they are part of the journey. The old saying from H Jackson Brown, Jr is, "Every person that you meet knows something you don't; learn from them." Don't be one of the "know it all" scum bags from the TV or now from the GRAM. Yes I'm hip. I've hear about Instagram. Be someone who can take a step back and learn, or even be wrong. That's when you will find the best results within your company and your team.
