“I learn a lot about the character of my men by how they pick fruit,” says Bishop Joseph Tyson of the Diocese of Yakima, explaining that his “Calluses to Chalices” formation program requires seminarians to work alongside migrant farmworkers in the summer. He recalls a moment when he discovered that some seminarians had taken a break apart from the workers. Noticing this, the migrant workers invited them to join in the shade and share their food. “When you're ordained a priest, you'll prepare the table for them,” Bishop Tyson told his seminarians. “But you start by being at their table.” In his homily for the Third Sunday of Lent, Year C, recorded for “Preach,” Bishop Tyson draws a parallel between the seminarians' work in the fields and spiritual fruitfulness. Speaking candidly with host Ricardo da Silva, S.J., around the time of Pope Francis' letter to U.S. bishops, , he stresses the need to address policies that harm marginalized communities. “I become a better bishop and a better priest because I want to generate love for the migrant passing through this diocese,” he says. “We've got to find a way of preaching and teaching that better.” Get daily Scripture reflections and support "Preach" by becoming a digital subscriber to America Magazine “Preach” is made possible through the generous support of the Compelling Preaching Initiative, a project of Lilly Endowment Inc. Learning to play the guitar comes with some pain in the beginning. It takes time to build up calluses on your fingers. Calluses are thick layers of skin that build up over time. And in the case of a guitarist are necessary to properly hold chords without pain. Like a guitarist's fingertips our hearts can become calloused. Through tough times and trials, some people become bitter. They have a harder time seeing the good in their lives and develop a hardened heart towards God. If this sounds like you, I'm praying you can pause and ask God to soften your heart. Be open to allowing Him to show you all the blessings in your life and how you can bless others. Over time, that calloused heart can learn joy all over again.

When was the last time you evaluated the state of your calluses? Not the ones on your feet or your hands... we mean the ones on your heart or in your mind. Recently, Kristy and Brad hosted a men's and women's retreat, and the topic was about how we as a society have become apathetic toward most things. Join us in this week's episode as we continue the chat about casual calluses.
These are a few of the things members wish they knew before they started or wish they would have learned sooner. --- Calluses --- Calluses are a fact of life when you start working out. We want to think about three primary things. 1) Manage your callus size. Use a tool to reduce the size of the callus. The bigger the callus the more likely it can rip off. A callus shaver is the best option for this. Something like this — https://amzn.to/3Rl1CSw 2) Taking care of your hands and keeping them hydrated. Dry skin tears much easier. Lotion your hand every night before bed. This will allow the lotion to really penetrate and keep the skin hydrated all day. 3) Use your hands. Make sure you are using your heads. You are using proper holds on different implements. Friction creates tears. Adjust your volume to build up your tolerance over time. Want more info about maintaining your hands? Check the two links out below. 5 Tips for Bullet-proof Hands https://equity.fitness/equity-blog/2014/10/2/5-tips-for-bulletproof-hands Tearing Your Hands is an Injury - In this I add to the 5 tips https://equity.fitness/equity-blog/tearing-your-hands-is-an-injury --- Weightlifting Belt --- To learn how to use a belt correctly and what the belt actually does to help you lift check out the link below. How and Why to use a Weightlifting Belt When we are doing strength movements we want to start using our belt on the set before we “need” it. This will allow us to get comfortable with the belt before the heavier loads. A belt should NOT be used during warm up sets. This is the time to focus on building abdominal pressure and technique without the belt. The better you can do this without the belt the more helpful the belt will be when you do use it. For metcons it is users choose. Generally you will use a belt at lighter weights compared to a strength day. For example if I am cleaning 185# on a strength day, i'm probably not using a belt. On the other had 185# cleans in a metcon, I am probably using a belt. --- Motivation --- Sparks of motivation are fleeting. When getting started you cannot count on it to keep you going. True motivation comes once progress start being made and this is when the snowball gets rolling. When you are getting started build a plan around the obstacles you face trying to get to the gym and how you will deal with them. Once you start seeing progress towards your goals that is when motivation will really start kicking in. Thank you and I hope this helps. If you have any questions about the above shoot me a message. If you have a new questions hit me up. Cheers, Coach Berek --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/theequitypodcast/message
If you have ever run with a rock in your shoe, you know just how painful a little pebble can be. Sometimes a callus forms in a way that it gets rock hard and starts to get embedded in the skin. Painful calluses can literally feel like a rock taped to your foot. The problem is that callus removal pads don't work. Using a pumice stone to shave down the surface of the callus doesn't really help much either. But you can fix them the same way I do using what I call the Strawberry Stem Technique. Let's talk about how they form and how this technique works. Today on the Doc On The Run podcast, we're talking about how you can fix painful calluses in a runner with what I call the Strawberry Stem Technique.

Bernd Debusmann was a young Reuters bureau chief when Lebanon imploded into civil war and anarchy in the 1970s, during which Syria and Hafez al-Assad became intimately involved the conflict. This talented and daring journalist took to war-torn Beirut like a duck to water, risking his life to interview combatants on all sides and civilians caught in the cross-fire, eventually running afoul of the Assad regime for reporting on their intervention in Lebanon and atrocities committed in Syria. This prompted Syrian intelligence officers to threaten his life. Several Western journalists fled Lebanon after receiving similar death threats, but Bernd stubbornly refused to be intimidated. The Assad regime then resorted to, "censorship by bullet" and attempted to assassinate him in 1980. Bernd survived and still walks around with a bullet in his back, to this day. And that wasn't even the first time he got shot in Lebanon. You won't want to miss this incredible interview with a man who frequently put his life on the line to inform the public and now shares valuable insight on a bygone era. The Lebanese Civil War and Syria's role in the conflict are largely forgotten today, but their long-term consequences reverberate into the present day.

You just got home from your evening walk and are taking off your shoes and socks. On your left foot, you notice that there's a hard, raised bump on your heel. You press on the area, but it doesn't hurt. You ask your doctor about it at your routine visit the following week. After looking at it, she says, you have a callus. What caused it to occur? Can it be removed? What do you need to do to prevent more calluses from forming?
You've worked hard to build a legacy and be successful. Will your family remain successful after you're gone? 90% of businesses fail by the third generation. The calluses are long gone and there is no foundation for these businesses to fall back on.
Don't Be Calloused Towards SinKey Verse: TODAY, IF YOU HEAR HIS VOICE, DO NOT HARDEN YOUR HEARTS. Hebrews 3:15
Bible Reading: 1 Thessalonians 5:19; Hebrews 3:12-15Ava scowled angrily at her mom. "How could you? I've never been so humiliated in my life! Do you know how embarrassing it is to have your mother come and drag you home?""That's enough, Ava!" Mom said firmly. "You know you're supposed to come right home after school and look after Emmett until I get home from work. But you went to Molly's and left your brother home alone. Then you lied about it--and convinced your brother to lie too!" Mom sighed deeply and sat on the edge of Ava's bed. "What has been going on the last couple of months? I don't think you just suddenly decided to rebel.""II don't know," said Ava. She began to cry. "The other girls seem to be able to do whatever they want, and I wanted to join them. I felt bad about some of the things I did, but after a while, they didn't seem so bad anymore."Mom looked at the cello in the corner of Ava's room. "Do you remember when you first started playing the cello? It hurt your fingers if you played a lot at one time. Now it doesn't. Why is that?"Ava looked at her hand. "My fingers weren't used to moving on the strings," she said, wondering why Mom had changed the subject. "Now they have calluses on them, so they don't hurt anymore.""Did the calluses magically appear one day, or did they build up gradually?""They built up over time," Ava replied. Mom nodded. "That's what happens when you do something over and over--including wrong things. At first, doing a wrong thing pricks your conscience and you feel guilty, but after a while, you get used to it and your conscience doesn't bother you anymore." Ava looked down at the floor. She knew just what Mom meant. "Because you know Jesus, God has given you the Holy Spirit," Mom added. "He often talks to you through your conscience. There's a verse in the Bible that tells us not to 'quench' Him. In other words, we're not to stop listening to what the Holy Spirit tells us. He's there to help us turn away from sin and make us more like Jesus." Mom leaned over and gave Ava a hug. "Think about that--and pray about it.""I will," Ava whispered. -Bethany ElmsHow About You?Are you getting calloused toward sin? Are some things that you know are wrong starting not to seem so bad now? As the Key Verse says, don't harden your heart. In other words, when your conscience makes you feel guilty, don't stubbornly ignore what God is telling you. Listen to the Holy Spirit when He tells you to turn away from sin.Today's Key Verse:Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts. (CSB) (Hebrews 3:15)Today's Key Thought:Don't be calloused toward sin

When our hands or feet experience repetitive hurts, they begin to form a protective barrier. Our bodies will form a natural layer of defense to protect against these pains, they're called calluses. Calluses on the hands are good, where a hard layer of protection is helpful. Yet not all calluses are good. Jesus pointed out an area where hardness was a detriment: the heart. Jesus said those with a calloused heart miss out on kingdom of God. Don't let life's recurring hurts cause a defensive layer to develop on your hear. Listen in to this Life App to discover and apply the remedy for eliminating a hardened heart and preventing future heart calluses from forming.

In this episode of The Pod Doctors podcast, Dr. Damien Dauphinee, a board-certified foot and ankle surgeon, and Dr. Raafae Hussain, fellowship trained foot and ankle surgeon, talk about one of the most common (and annoying) skin lesions they see in patients: corns and calluses. They discuss what these skin lesions are and how some could be caused by an underlying bone problem. He is currently doing a masters in artificial intelligence, and was on a semester abroad at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras in the South province of Tamil Nadu when all of the Covid-19 stuff began. What is the cost of desensitization?
How is my foot health? Today I went into the dermatologist because it felt like someone was shoving a needle into my heel each time I took a step. After checking for a splinter and finding nothing, I assumed it was a planter's wart. Wrong. What I have is a corn. Yes, an annoyingly painful callus type pit or core that my body produced to protect itself. You see, that's how corns and calluses are made. Your body is trying to protect your sensitive tissue/skin when friction or rubbing occurs. What is a Corn? This corn has had skin removed to help with the pain. Corns generally occur at pressure points, typically the bottom of the feet and the sides of toes. They can be painful. A hard corn is a small patch of thickened, dead skin with a central core. A soft corn has a much thinner surface and usually occurs between the 4th and 5th toes. A seed corn is a tiny, discrete callous that can be very tender if it's on a weight-bearing part of the foot. Seed corns tend to occur on the bottom of the feet. WebMD What are Calluses? Callus and non-callused feet. Calluses are not painful but build a thick layer on the outermost layer or part of your skin. Unlike corns, calluses can develop when there is repeated friction, on the hands, feet, or other places on the body. Now there are different types of calluses. The first type, which is the most common, is where there is repetition, rubbing, or friction. The second is called a plantar callus found on the bottom of your feet. How Do You Get a Corn or Callus? From friction caused by ill-fitting shoes or by walking improperly. High-hilled shoes are the worst.By wearing sandals or other footwear without socks, causing your foot to slip around. RunningBeing on your feet for long periods.Plugged sweat ducks. RubbingPressure Remember how I thought mine might be a sliver or wart? Well, that's something you need to check out too. Warts have little black seed-like heads and keep your fingerprint, so to speak. Slivers or splinters when pushed, can release pus and push out the object under your skin. Be careful, anytime you deal with feet, and where moisture builds bacteria, that you clean and keep dry any open skin or corn. Again, keep the area clean anytime there is a cut or open wound of any kind in any situation as a staph infection could start. What Do Corns and Calluses Look Like? "A callus is a patch of thick, dead skin anywhere on the body which is subject to friction. There are different common names given to the various type of calluses.A hard corn is a compact patch of hard skin with a dense core, located on top of a toe or the outside of the little toe.A soft corn is a reddened, tender area of skin, has a thin, smooth center, and is found between toes.A seed corn is a plug-like circle of dead skin, often painful, on the heel or ball of the foot.A plantar callus is a callus on the bottom or plantar surface of the foot." -WebMD Treatments You will notice a pattern in the remedies below. All will either remove dead skin or moisten your skin. Keeping your skin soft and subtle will help prevent and treat corns and calluses. Lemon Juice The citric acid in lemon juice softens the hard-upper layer of the corns and calluses. Using a cue tip, soak the end and apply the lemon juice morning and evening. Baking Soda "Baking soda is a natural exfoliating agent that scrubs and removes the hard-layer of dead skin cells that cover the corn and also promotes the process of healing. The potent antibacterial and antifungal properties of baking soda also prevent skin infections." -thefitindian.com Warm Water Treatment Use a 20-min warm water treatment to soak and soften the outer hardened layers of dead skin. To remove the skin, rub it after soaking and after you towel dry with your fingers, a pummel stone or razor. When using a razor, however, be extremely careful not to cut too deep. The point isn't to bleed,
You may not be aware of this, but one attribute of Suffering is that it’s a learned skill. That probably sounds odd, but it’s true nevertheless. You get better at Suffering the more you do it. It’s not a skill that’s perfected overnight. Actually, it’s not a skill that’s ever perfected. You get better at it, but perfection is not really a thing. You need to practice Suffering. You have to intentionally add Suffering to your life. Also, this isn’t done simply for the raw and bare sake of Suffering, but the intention is to add calluses, toughness, to your soul. When we endure Suffering we heal tougher, stronger, more durable than we were prior to the experience. The soul, the mind, is very similar to our skin and muscles. When you work hard with your hands it’s common to develop calluses once the skin heals. The layer of skin that replaces to previous layer is tougher, more durable, better able and more capable to handle harder future workloads. It’s a new protective layer of skin meant to be prepared to handle the work that’s asked of it next time. When you endure mental stress your mind begins to harden, get tougher, be better prepared for more strenuous work in the future. I call this calluses for the soul.

Hope Fellowship Church Mar 10 – 16, 2019 ========== Acts Part 4: Satan's Sinister Strategy vs. God's Glorious Goal The Church... Not a human organization, not a building formed by human hands... But the workmanship of God...This has always been His idea. ========== Acts 6:1-8 Now in these days when the disciples were increasing in number, a complaint by the Hellenists arose against the Hebrews because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution. And the twelve summoned the full number of the disciples and said, "It is not right that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables. Therefore, brothers, pick out from among you seven men of good repute, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we will appoint to this duty. But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word." And what they said pleased the whole gathering, and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolaus, a proselyte of Antioch. These they set before the apostles, and they prayed and laid their hands on them. And the word of God continued to increase, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests became obedient to the faith. And Stephen, full of grace and power, was doing great wonders and signs among the people. 1. Satan’s first strategy: Division in the church. a. Authentic church and discipleship is messy b. Satan loves to use an unintentional wrong to begin a conflict. 2. Satan’s second strategy: Distraction of leadership. 3. Satan’s final strategy: Devastation of life. Acts 6:8 And Stephen, full of grace and power, was doing great wonders and signs among the people. Acts 6:11 Then they secretly instigated men who said, "We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and God." Acts 7:51 “And you continue, so bullheaded! Calluses on your hearts, flaps on your ears! Deliberately ignoring the Holy Spirit, you’re just like your ancestors. Was there ever a prophet who didn’t get the same treatment? Your ancestors killed anyone who dared talk about the coming of the Just One. And you’ve kept up the family tradition—traitors and murderers, all of you. You had God’s Law handed to you by angels—gift-wrapped!—and you squandered it!” Acts 7:54 Now when they heard these things they were enraged, and they ground their teeth at him. Callus don't develop on the hands which stay in luxury and stay away from hard work. Callus grows on the hands which knows what hard work is and what it feels like being human. Beautification has become a deteriorating factor to our current generation, which forces them to skip hard physical work.We are not just depriving our future generations from learning the real way but we are making them internally weak. In this conversation with **Kaavya Gupta** we explored more about Calluses and the perspective of a lady who admire harf earned Calluses.
