n this episode, podcast host CJMiller welcomes fellow artist, teacher, and art retreat facilitator Joy Fahey. Joy runs a vibrant YouTube channel offering online art classes and organizes yearly art retreats in Malaga, Spain. CJ and Joy delve into the artistic and emotional benefits of art retreats, sharing their insights and experiences. CJ discusses how asemic drawing and music can inspire a painting, while Joy explains her process of Zen painting as a starting point for creativity. Joy emphasizes the importance of engaging the whole body, especially the arm, in the painting process. Both artists describe art retreats as magical places where participants share their knowledge and learn from each other. Joy recounts a traumatic experience that led her to become a more conscious artist, and how this journey has influenced her approach to teaching and creating art. They discuss the transformative impact of art on individuals dealing with trauma, and how painting offers a new perspective on their challenges. They highlight how everyone on the retreat shares their experiences and gets to know each other intimately.  Each participant's artwork is unique, reflecting their personal journey. Both artists describe the magical aspects of painting, describing it as rewarding, cathartic, and confidence-boosting.Artist Joy Fahey was born in Manchester, UK, and now lives near Malaga, Spain. She studied Fine Art at Manchester College of Art and has travelled to many countries and spent long periods of time in the USA, South Africa, Hong Kong, Australia, and New Zealand. She has had many exhibitions both nationally and internationally, including the Gaudi Galleria, Madrid, and CAC, Contemporary Art Picasso Museum, Mijas Pueblo. In July 2017, she was also represented by the Galleria Rimon, Marbella. Joy lives in the historic and cultural village of Torrox in southern Spain, where she has her studio and teaches workshops and online courses. She also holds Creative Painting and Wellness Retreats twice a year in the beautiful Little Alhambra just outside Malaga.   For more information and to watch a video about Joy's upcoming September Art & Wellness Retreat in Malaga, Spain visit: https://www.joyfaheyclasses.com/creative-painting-and-wellness-retreat-special For more information on CJ's upcoming Spiritual Artist Retreat in Santa Fe, New Mexico, May 4-8 visit https://www.spiritualartisttoday.com/services-9

Creative Workshop is an historic recording studio founded in 1970 by songwriter and producer Buzz Cason. It was the very first recording studio established in Nashville's Berry Hill district and was one of the first independently owned studios built in all of Nashville. Berry Hill is now home to nearly 40 recording studios.    The Studio was originally built as a place for Cason to develop and produce new artists. He and his engineer Travis Turk wasted no time doing this.  Before the paint could even dry on the walls they were in the studio tracking a young songwriter from Mobile named Jimmy Buffett.   When Travis left, Brent Maher became the new chief engineer and oversaw the building of a brand new, state-of-the-art control room and renovation to the live tracking room in 1976.  Shortly after,in 1977,Elvis Presley was booked in to Creative for a week long Recording session, beginning Thursday January 20th. However, things didn't quite go to plan. I'm delighted to say Brent joins me on the show today to share his memories of that time with us

He works deeply with archetypes, imagery and nature, “When someone has trauma, words don't really connote the experience.” John currently teaches private sessions using the Internal Landscapes methodology on Zoom. The Haus of Ollom is a multidisciplinary online gallery and community showcasing art, cooking recipes, poetry, workshops, Tarot instruction and memorial for those who have died of Covid. From John, “It came out of the house tradition in Harlem which was in the 80s when a lot of gay people were being kicked out of families for being gay or trans or bi or queer. And a lot of gay people would make these balls and dress up and have events. And they would have mother in the Haus and the mother would take care of them and kind of support them because they didn't have mothers. And I think out of my own pain from own family of origin I created my own family of choice. I had someone sent to me from North Dakota…we call him Madame Jay because working with me came out as a drag queen, and he kept calling me mother. And it stuck because I was giving them a house, I was giving them a home.” To view John's new video book Dark Matter and other rooms in the Haus of Ollom visit www.ollomart.com.   Recommendations: Books: Sylvia Brinton Perera: Descent to the Goddess: A Way of Initiation for Women. This week on UX Cake I had a chance to catch up with David and Mary Sherwin about their new book, Turning People Into Teams. I love this topic — how do we go from being just a bunch individual people with different motivations, attitudes, working styles, communication styles, into a team where the whole is better than the sum parts? It’s about redesigning the way we work together. And the exciting thing about it is that it can happen in small incremental ways; it doesn’t mean a big re-org or overhaul. This is great for all kinds of working collaboration with very practical techniques you can put into place. David and Mary Sherwin are co-founders of Ask The Sherwins, LLC, a consulting and training firm that helps organizations around the world develop the capabilities they need for stronger teamwork. They have coached product and service design teams and developed innovation training for organizations such as Philips Oral Healthcare, Google UX Community and Culture, and Eventbrite. The Sherwins have collaborated on three books, including the bestseller Creative Workshop.Show Highlights:Mary shares a short synopsis of Turning People Into Teams. Teams have the ability to improve any aspect of their working process by creating rituals to create the outcomes they want. Teams have the power to create change without waiting for a budget, a great mandate, or another person in leadership. David defines what they mean by rituals and routines, for the purpose of the book.Mary shares how the new book can be useful to managers who want their teams to use the book, but may also be used by individuals on a team can benefit from the ideas in Mary and David’s new book.David elaborates on a section of the book dealing with when teams are stuck and offers useful tools in a “stuck” situation.Mary says teams need to acknowledge when they noticed something going wrong.“It’s really easy for a team to develop a robust vocabulary around all the crap that’s going wrong, but it’s difficult for them to talk about what is going well in a way that’s meaningful.”David shares that teams need to figure out where they are in a project and what the expectations are between the manager and the team.“If you’re going to have leaders participate in one of the rituals, everyone needs to have equal time and equal voice in sharing what’s needed throughout the ritual so that there won’t be a power imbalance.”Mary discusses the 4 Player Conversation by David Kantor which was referenced in their new book. This can can help individuals understand the differenent roles in team conversations.Getting the team to test an aspect of the ritual and sharing the data as proof of success can be important.Resources:The Sherwins The Sherwins on TwitterArticle about rituals Their new book Turning People Into TeamsTurning People Into Teams ToolkitDavid Kantor’s book, Reading the RoomYou can now support the future of the UX Cake podcast and be a part of the UX Cake community at Patreon.com/uxcake Connect with UX Cake!Twitter FaceBook Instagram www.uxcake.co See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
