Fifteen years ago tonight, The Flood continued its mission to convince the world that jug band music could fit any occasion. This particular occasion — in the ballroom atop the Renaissance Performing Arts Center in the old Huntington High School building in the city's South Side — was a benefit concert to help out with medical expenses for a family member of long-time Flood buddy Dale Jones. No one knows how successful the band's hokum music proselytizing was — you can draw your own conclusions by watching Pamela Bowen's video from that November 2009 night — but no one doubts the success for the concert: it raised nearly $2,000 for Dale's family.JoelessnessThe band worked at a disadvantage that night, because Joe Dobbs couldn't make the gig, or any other Flood gig for the rest of the year. That's because about the time the band was taking the stage, the fiddler was winging his way to Australia to visit Rod and Judy Jones and to play shows and festivals Down Under over the next month or so.Earlier that autumn, the guys were saddened when they realized they wouldn't have Joe around for the holidays. Oh, Floodsters usually didn't actually do all that much with the Jolly Ol' Elf during the Yuletide, but it was always fun seeing him wear his Santa hat throughout the season (thrilling The Nice and scaring the bejesus out of The Naughty). The Flood's anticipated Joe Deficiency for December 2009 became a regular topic of conversation in the weekly jam sessions at the time.At one point Dave Peyton and Charlie Bowen quipped that anyone who would like to audition to be Joe's stand-in during his absence should just show up at a rehearsal in a Joe Dobbs mask.Honestly, no one thought anyone would actually do it, but, of course, no one should ever count out the creative mind of Carter Taylor Seaton, who is always up for a challenge. The photos above show her and Richard Cobb modelling their masks on either side of the genuine article.Gig NightCarter and Richard were in the audience that night at the Renaissance, along with other Flood friends, like Rose Riter, Norman and Shirley Davis, JoAnn and Bob McCoy and Sharon and Tom Pressman. Even with Joe's absence, the band had a healthy quorum for the gig. The video from the evening features Dave and Charlie front and center with Michelle Hoge and Dave “Bub” Ball. The three jug band tunes are rich in tasty solos by Jacob Scarr, Doug Chaffin and Sam St. Clair. The highlight, though, is the video's debut of young James St. Clair, standing in the front row and almost but not quite busting a few moves during his dad's harmonica solos. That was the same night, incidentally, when the lad told us that since he could now stand on his own two feet, we had to stop calling him as “Sweet Baby James,” which we did. Sorta.More Jugginess?Of course, The Flood's jug band music mission work continues today. The guys are still trying to show the world how to fit hokum into its various holidays and observances. If Pamela's video has you ready to join the campaign, check out The Hokum channel on the free Radio Floodango music streaming service which has dozens of jug band tunes ready to rock you. Click here to tune it in and you'll be ready to sing along at the next Flood fest. This is a public episode. By the end of 1970 Three Dog Night was in the middle of their most prolific and successful period of their career. The group would land 21 Billboard Top 40 hits between 1969 and 1975 with three of these taking the top slot. The group was formed by three vocalists in 1967 - Chuck Negron, Cory Wells, and Danny Hutton. The other members of the band for this album are Mike Allsup on guitar, Joe Schermie on bass, Jimmy Greenspoon on keyboards, and Floyd Sneed on drums. All of the instrumentalists in the band also provide backing vocals on at least one of the songs from the album.Naturally is the fifth album from the band and the second released in 1970. Three singles from the album entered the Billboard top 20, with "Joy to the World" topping the charts. As with contemporaries like the Beach Boys and Crosby, Stills, and Nash, you get an abundance of vocal harmonies with Three Dog Night. Given the origins with three vocalists, perhaps this is not surprising.Three Dog Night takes its name from the Australian Outback, and how the Aborigines would keep warm at night by sleeping with a dingo - dogs native to the continent. A very cold evening would be known as a three-dog night. While the group was inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2000, they have not yet been inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Much of their work was composed by others, and this has been used as an excuse for their lack of recognition.Three Dog Night continues to produce music today, though Danny Hutton is the only original member still with the group. Wayne takes us through this album for today's podcast. One Man BandThe first single released from the album went to number 19 on the Billboard charts. The lyrics describe a man who wants to be the only one for his lover - her one man band. There are great close harmonies and work on the Hammond organ in this one.Joy to the WorldThe big hit from the album went to number 1 on the Billboard charts and remained there for six weeks. It was not expected to be a hit, but was instead expected to just be a "filler" song for the album with nonsensical but catchy lyrics. Singer-songwriter, guitarist, and actor Hoyt Axton wrote the song. Chuck Negron is the lead singer on this hit.LiarRuss Ballard of Argent wrote this song, and released it as Argent's first single off their self-titled album. While that version did not chart, the Three Dog Night rendition went to number 7 on the Billboard charts, benefitting from its release after their number 1 hit with "Joy to the World." The haunting lyrics describe a relationship in trouble.I Can Hear You CallingThis song leads off the album and appears as the B-side to "Joy to the World," but was never released as a single itself. The funky grooves feature heavy use of the Hammond organ and a big drum beat. The lyrics reflect a person who keeps getting called on the phone by a lover he has left behind. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main theme from the television series “H.R. Pufnstuf”This odd children's show from Sid and Marty Krofft left the airwaves in October 1970. STAFF PICKS:Fire and Rain by James TaylorRob starts off the staff picks with this soft rock hit. Taylor wrote the song after the suicide of a friend. It was the second single from Taylor's second album, "Sweet Baby James." It peaked at number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100.It Don't Matter to Me by BreadBruce brings us another soft hit. Bread was a soft rock group formed and fronted by David Gates, along with Jimmy Griffin and Rob Royer. Gates, a native of Tulsa, Oklahoma, ran in the same circles as Leon Russell in Tulsa bar bands before moving to California. The song reflects an openness in the singer's relationship, wanting only the best for his love.Knock Three Times by Dawn Lynch features a group which would later be known as Tony Orlando and Dawn. Orlando was working as an executive at April-Blackwood Music, and released the song without listing his name to protect his position from accusations of a conflict of interest. The song went to number 1. The lyrics reflect a secret romance between a man and his neighbor from the floor below.Let's Go, Let's Go, Let's Go by Bettye LaVetteWayne's staff pick is a bit of a James Brown song with a female voice. Bettye LaVette came out of Detroit but was signed by Atlantic Records rather than their competitors in Detroit, Motown Records. LaVette is a long time singer of blues, soul, and R&B starting in the early 60's and continuing today. This song is about letting loose and having a good time living in the moment. In this captivating bonus episode, Brad Lowe sits down for a lively chat with the musical maestro himself, Peter Asher – half of the legendary duo, Peter and Gordon. The conversation unfolds like a symphony, weaving through Peter's childhood, his musical journey, and even a detour into brain surgery. Peter Asher's childhood was a melody of joy, with a professional musician mother and a doctor father. It's the kind of upbringing that probably explains his knack for orchestrating musical magic and curing any case of the blues. His love affair with music started early, nurtured by his mother's classical tunes and a serendipitous discovery of American music genres. Jazz, rock and roll, and rhythm and blues became the building blocks of Peter's musical palette, setting the stage for a harmonious career. Before the birth of Peter and Gordon, Peter Asher was a devoted follower of musical legends – Buddy Holly, Everly Brothers, Elvis, and jazz maestros like Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. It's like he attended the school of cool tunes, graduating with honors. The duo's breakthrough hit, 'World Without Love,' became the anthem that changed their lives and launched them into the stratosphere of musical stardom. It's the kind of success story that probably left Peter and Gordon wondering if they had stumbled upon a musical genie in a bottle. But Peter Asher didn't stop at the microphone; he made a seamless transition from musician to producer extraordinaire. Collaborating with artists like Paul Jones and crafting iconic albums such as 'Sweet Baby James' and 'Heart Like a Wheel,' Peter proved he could pull the strings both on and off the stage. In a surprising twist, Peter shares his favorite songs and albums, giving us a backstage pass to the tunes that have shaped his musical journey. It's like a mixtape curated by the maestro himself, and we're all invited to the dance. The conversation takes an unexpected turn towards Peter's life post-brain surgery. With resilience and humor, he reflects on the challenges and triumphs of recovery, reminding us all that even in the face of adversity, the show must go on. But the music doesn't stop there. Peter Asher continues to rock the stage, collaborating with fellow musicians and imparting his musical wisdom in songwriting seminars. It's a testament to his enduring passion and the timeless appeal of his melodies. So, whether you're a die-hard Peter and Gordon fan or simply someone who appreciates a good tune and a few laughs, this bonus episode is a musical journey worth taking. Until next time, may the melodies keep playing, and the laughter keep echoing! Recognized programs include the Mobile Food Distribution initiative, Black History Month exhibit, online donation app, and watershed cleanup aimed at combating water pollution. The county's mobile food program, initially established to address pandemic-related food security challenges, earned the Best in Category Achievement Award. Notably, the Volunteer Gwinnett project distributed over 1.5 million pounds of food to almost 50,000 households in under three years. These accomplishments highlight Gwinnett County's commitment to comprehensive community support. Story 3: homes Since the COVID-19 pandemic, rising real estate values and rents have strained budgets for homebuyers and renters. The U.S. saw a substantial increase in median home sales price, boosted by low interest rates and a strong pandemic economy. While rent prices remained restrained due to renter protections and assistance programs, they accelerated in 2021 and 2022. Despite a 13.2% decline in median home sale price in Q2 2023 from the peak of Q4 2022, housing supply remains critically low, contributing to high competition and prices. The scarcity stems from underinvestment in housing since the Great Recession, which was worsened by high inflation and construction costs. Builder confidence declined for 12 consecutive months in 2022, influenced by these factors. Nationally, Georgia is 10th for building the most new homes. We'll be right back Break 2: Slappey.- Tom Wages - Obits Story 4: taylor Bill Griese, known as Sweet Baby James, is a performer who travels the country giving solo concerts of James Taylor's iconic songs. Griese, a Nashville resident, has been doing this for about seven years. Despite being a dedicated Taylor fan, Griese's presentation is not a typical tribute band show, and he doesn't attempt to imitate Taylor's appearance or mannerisms. He performs Taylor's songs in his own style, without a visual component, focusing on sharing the music rather than the history of Taylor. Griese's concerts are interactive and include hits like "You've Got a Friend," "Sweet Baby James," and "Fire and Rain." He performs around 45 shows a year and values audience engagement. Sweet Baby James will perform at the Aurora Theatre located at the Lawrenceville Arts Center at 7:30 p.m. Tonight. Story 5: king "Beautiful: The Carole King Musical" is a production that tells the story of Carole King's early career and her success as a songwriter before becoming a solo artist. The musical covers her collaboration with songwriting partners like Gerry Goffin, Cynthia Weil, and Barry Mann, and features many of the hit songs she wrote, including "You've Got a Friend," "One Fine Day," and "The Loco-Motion." The musical, which opened on Broadway in 2014 and received Tony and Grammy Awards, is now being presented by the Aurora Theatre in Georgia. The lead role of Carole King is played by Bethany Irby, who also plays the piano during the performance. The show is described as a "jukebox musical" and is expected to resonate with audiences through its nostalgic songs and Carole King's inspiring journey. So I was singin' Lee Lo with Henry Diltz in Creque Alley and having a Conversation with Sweet Baby James. I Ain't Scared Of Your Jail, I told him. Then he asked me, Who Are the Brain Police? Well, I said I was Born Under a Bad Sign with the Roadhouse Blues, and I'm helplessly hoping that there's a Place in the World for a Gambler. Confused, he said, I'm gonna Go Back Home For What It's Worth.

Episode 86 is a special wander and tribute to my son Alec who died of a drug overdose at the age of 25. Today, February 26th, 2022 is the fifth anniversary of his passing. He would have been thirty years old this year. It's also a tribute to my father who lived a healthy and long life of 95 years and who passed away a few years ago. And lastly, its a tribute to sweet baby James who inspired me to share my grief with you because....as the song goes, there will be one child born every day in this world...to carry on... to carry on.... If you like a good wander, continue to listen. We will be back to the regular show in episode 87. There is more direct forensics to come in this series of forensics episodes. Stay tuned, and eventually we'll explore more of the physical evidence involving use and ownership of the Mannlicher Carcano rifle and evidence recovered from the Presidential limousine, as well as damage done to the vehicle. Our episodes have now begun to explore an array of matters that dive into a deeper darkness related to what went on that day in Dallas and in the period before and after the assassination. Matters that possibly point to a wider and more sinister plot to kill the president and that clearly call into question the theory that there was a lone assassin. Complex cases without an eyewitness that can actually identify the shooter make the forensic and circumstantial evidence that much more important. Ironically, problems abound with much of the evidence in this case. Evidence that is complex, incomplete and sometimes conflicting. Even as early as 1964, rumors and serious concerns over the lone gunman theory and the evidence that might contravene it, were becoming a major concern for the government and the commission. Conspiracy theories were contrary to the government's stated narrative from the very beginning. Stay tuned as there are many more episodes to come! This series comprehensively explores the major facts, themes, and events leading up to the assassination in Dealey Plaza and the equally gripping stories surrounding the subsequent investigation. We review key elements of the Warren Commission Report , and the role of the CIA and FBI. We explore the possible involvement of the Mafia in the murder and the review of that topic by the government's House Select Committee on Assassinations in the 1970's. We explore the Jim Garrison investigation and the work of other key figures such as Mark Lane and others. Learn more about Lee Harvey Oswald the suspected killer and Jack Ruby the distraught Dallas night club owner with underworld ties and the man that killed Oswald as a national TV audience was watching. Stay with us as we take you through the facts and theories in bite sized discussions that are designed to educate, and inform as well as entertain the audience. This real life story is more fascinating than fiction. No matter whether you are a serious researcher or a casual student, you will enjoy the fact filled narrative and story as we relive one of the most shocking moments in American History. An event that changed the nation and changed the world forever.

What a gift to be able to look iconic drummer Russell Kunkel in the virtual eye and say, thank you. A lifetime fan, I've seen and heard Russ play more times than I can begin to count. His beat literally weaves through the musical Tapestry of my life (see what I did there). Add to that, a sweet, gentlemanly, romantic soul, he's all that and a bag of sticks. We started with The Immediate Family and came back around, full circle. I honored the time promised (it's Russ's last night with his beautiful bride for a spell, so we kept it to a tight hour), and he kindly indulged a few personal questions about Leah Kunkle (Cass Elliot's sis), his kids, Nathaniel, Elsie, Owen, Carly Simon, Nicolette Larson, and how he met his beloved, Shauna. Love that Leland played a hand without a bass in it. Of the almost uncountable iconic recordings and tours that Russ has played on, we started with John Stewart (Daydream Believer) of The Kingston Trio, where Russ claims to have been schooled by the talented consummate professional. And where he was discovered by Peter Asher, which for Russ was a game, and a life-changer. We talked James Taylor and Sweet Baby James, where Russ met Leland Sklar, Danny Kortchmar, and Craig Dorge, soon to be known as The Section, Carole King and Tapestry, Jackson Browne and Running on Empty, Joni Mitchell and Blue, Waddy Wachtell and Warren Zevon, Stephen Stills and CSN&Y, Carly Simon, Stevie Nicks, getting a call from Asher to grab his gear and head to CBS, cor what turned into a 7 hour recorded jam with George Harrison and Bob Dylan, which led to playing on Dylan's New Morning, a one-off with Barbara Streisand, a many off with Neil Diamond, of whom Russ has great affection and admiration and shared a lovely story, B.B. King with Carole King, 15 yrs with Lyle Lovett, the who, what, where, when and how of the making of The Immediate Family, adding MVP (according to Russ), Steve Postell, their EPs LP, Denny Tedesco's much anticipated upcoming doc on them, joining Carole King as she was inducted into the Rock 'N Roll Hall of Fame, their current tour, about to east coast it, returning to the Canyon Club on Dec 19th where I hope to be front row center. Well, with my hip thing and the pandemic, more likely, an isolation booth with walker access. With all the above, we barely scratched the Kunkle disc surface. And yet, I'm Russ sated. For now. Such a gifted talent, a gentlemanly humble soul, with a romantic spirit… ah… I think I need a cigarette. I hope to approach life the way Russ does the drums… listening more and allowing for space. Adore the man and all of his music. This concert conjures the dreams and visions that arise through music. It's inspired by the special challenges of living as an American 'ex-pat' in Australia...like the inability to find Fig Newtons when I crave them! Through music and story, this live-streamed concert flows from early musical influences to the present time, as the past and present meld into, ultimately, a special July 4th tribute for all from the good ol' USA. Music includes, "Drift Away" by Dobie Gray, "Fire and Rain" and "Sweet Baby James" by James Taylor, "America the Beautiful," and "Waltzing Matilda," to express the melding of experiences that I have, an American living here, Down Under. “You Can Go To Hell, I’m Going To Texas” es un tema compartido con la cantante y compositora tejana Vanessa Olivarez. No Ace In The Hole”. James Taylor was a talented guy, but early in his career he was having a tough time getting a break. Even when the Beatles signed him to their label, it was at a time that the label was coming unraveled and promotion was scarce. Plus, Taylor had his own issues to deal with. It took some time but he managed to get his act together, get himself cleaned up and get some talented people to work with him on his second album, which fortunately wasn't on Apple Records. With some support from Warner Brothers, Sweet Baby James became a hit album, and "Fire and Rain" became a breakout his for Taylor. "Fire and Rain" is one of those songs that seems to have a lot of weird theories surrounding its subject matter, and the best I can tell you is that most of them are close, but not close enough to be considered correct. But the real stories attached to the song are more compelling, if not quite as exciting. As I promised during the show, here's a sample of the old Smokey Stover comic strip that I referred to: For my money, some of that art suggests that Bill Holman was a big influence on the MAD Magazine crew. It's also likely that Holman himself was influenced by George McManus, the artist behind "Bringing Up Father." Click here for a transcript of this episode. Click here to become a Patron of the show.

That’s How Rumors Get Started. Escuchar audio
This year's holiday season will be like no other since the 1918 Influenza Pandemic. Families have been instructed to avoid large gatherings, and as we move into December many celebrations will become virtual. That said, we’re continuing our tradition of focusing this seasonal program on songs about travel and food. We'll hear music from Gillian Welch, Joel Mabus, Tom Rush, The Good Ol' Persons, Tony Joe White and many more. Remembering the traditions of Thanksgiving … this week on The Sing Out! Radio Magazine. Pat welcomes Peter Asher to the show to discuss his book "The Beatles from A to Zed: An Alphabetical Mystery Tour" and his career as a performer and producer.
Another Side Of Bob Dylan. Hace siete años lanzó la caja de ocho discos Blame it All on My Roots: Five Decades of Influences.
All the records we ("The Section") made including 'Tapestry' and James Taylor; we were all in the room together. Everyone's in the same room playing at the same time. From playing on 'Tapestry' and Sweet Baby James that lit us all up. "I was taught to play in the studio by some very astute fellows. Namely Peter Asher, Lou Adler and Carole (King). They always brought me back to the song; what's best for the song? Don't play over the melody, play something that's going to help. This was before you could amplify an acoustic guitar so James is playing to the mic. We're all walking on egg shells. Keep it down to a level where James' (Taylor) guitar and vocal can be heard. We were all sitting down close to each other. Peter Asher made the template for that music when he produced "Sweet Baby James." That's how we learned to play together. That record and the next one, 'Mudslide Slim.' That's where Russ, Lee and I learned to play that music." "We got into the studios from that. Peter Asher was the first producer to put the names of the accompanists on the albums. This is why the wrecking crew is not well known because they played on many records but they weren't listed.” “These records came along and we were kind of the next generation of the wrecking crew. Because Peter and Lou (Adler) were putting the names of the musicians on the albums we got recognition. We started getting a lot of calls, especially Russ (Kunkel) and Lee (Sklar).” “That sounds like an obvious thing but it isn't. Very, very few records are made like that anymore. They're mostly made peace meal, one part at a time. When I was producing a lot of records in the eighties and nineties I would put all the guys in the room. I produced a 'Spin Doctors' album where they were all in the room together. I never really got into doing one part at a time.” “As far as analog to digital I think that's overrated. If Tom Dowd had ProTools, working on all those early Aretha records, he would have absolutely loved it.” “The analog sound that you're (JFS) talking about comes to the signal, not where it ends up. Really good engineers know how to mic stuff. They know how to mic a drum kit and mic a room that has four or five guys in it. At that point the difference between recording to tape or ProTools is minuscule. More is made out of it then is there. It's about the chain - the mic's and preamps that you use. Again, it very much has to do with guys in a room. You don't have guys in a room together you're not going to get that sound. It's what happens when everyone plays together." “All my favorite guitar players growing up were like that too. Steve Cropper, Curtis Mayfield, Cornell Dupree, David T. Walker - all those guys knew how to set up a song. Everybody else was listening to lead guitar and I was listening to these guys. To me, Steve Croppers playing on those Stax/Volt Records is the essence of how you play a song. You have to serve the song.” “I have a huge ego, but when I have to find the right part for a song that upstages my ego. When I was playing with James (Taylor) and Carol (King) I was jamming all the time, everyday. I was able to play solos, turn up and play louder.” “When you hear a song like 'You've Got A Friend,' forget your ego. That's a great song, all I try to do is find some way to help tell the story.” “Musicians never want it to end. They don't want to be part of a moment that only lasts a few years and goes away.” “Musicians are all about love and the musicians I know (and I know a lot of them) absolutely love each other. They love playing together, they glow, and I do too. It a profound situation to play music with other people. It creates a bond, especially when you've been playing and listening since you were ten. It was a lifetime thing with all of us.” --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jake-feinberg/support

When people use the term "singer/songwriter" (often modified by the word "sensitive") in praise or in criticism, they're thinking of James Taylor. Although this singer songwriter is one of the best selling and most influence, we find some faults in the album and it's scattered approach that don't always seem to play to Taylor's strengths.

To get to talk to the mother of the baby boy, James Fulton Engstrom, who was stillborn on September 16, 2010, after a healthy pregnancy. The baby stayed dead for 61 minutes. Let that sink in. James’s parents, Bonnie and Travis, began praying—hoping very much against hope—for the intercession of Archbishop Fulton Sheen, who was born and raised near their hometown, to “do something!” After 61 minutes, something totally unexpected and yet longed for happened. The baby’s heart quickened into a healthy rhythm, and a lovely pink flush replaced the ashen gray of his corpse. TOTALLY impossible, according to every medical expert who has examined the case, and yet it happened. But they weren’t out of the woods. Sweet Baby James, by all evidence, would never recover from the catastrophic loss of oxygen. Doctors predicted the worst. The Engstroms leveraged social media and doubled down on the heavenly “ask.” People in many countries came to the assistance with prayers. And none of the medical disasters came to pass. James was, and is, normal. This is an incredible story, and is set to be the bona fide miracle that will make “Uncle Fultie” become Blessed Fulton J. Sheen, one step away from canonization. Ah, cool! ****************************************************** Don't miss our FREE Livestreams in Facebook, Like my page to get notified when we go live: www.facebook.com/patrickcoffin.media

Lithium Pioneer James Calaway, founder and ex-Chairman of Argentina/Japan-focused Orocobre and now on a second lithium tour of duty as Chairman of ioneer, a leading American lithium and boron project in Nevada, shares his perspective after a morning keynote speech and day of high-level USA government talks at Benchmark Minerals Washington DC summit "Securing 21st Century US Supply Chains for EVS & Energy Storage." A serial and accomplished entrepreneur and project developer, Sweet Baby James, Capital Structure Calaway discusses the "un-level playing field" in which US developers compete from a cost of capital perspective, based on the hand-in-glove relationship he sees between industry and government in China, Korea & Japan for the EV/Storage thematic and its implications throughout the entire raw material-to-EV supply chain. The USA lithium landscape has many potential projects but the opportunity set is quite varied by resource type and therefore risk. James helps frame the opportunity set into four separate buckets and the relative considerations - technical and otherwise - in each bucket. He also raises some specific policy ideas for where some small government involvement can help level the playing field from a cost-of-capital perspective with America's Asian competitors.
