First: Imagine driving a 60-foot, 21-ton vehicle through the crowded, energetic streets of San Francisco on a daily basis. Next: Imagine doing it while stuttering every time you speak. This is the daily life of Dustin Wells. Dustin Wells describes himself as a happy man. Did you imagine that? Hear more about Dustin's years of silence and shame, and the support and philosophy that has moved him beyond all that. ———— We proudly air another episode of the podcast, “Proud Stutter” produced and hosted by Maya Chupkov. Quinn Greenhaus and Kristin Evans helped produce the Proud Stutter audio. Adrienne Lauby hosts for Pushing Limits. Judith Lesner On Wednesday, August 30th we lost one the most dedicated allies of the disability rights movement. Judith Lesner worked at Camp Jened (also known as Crip Camp) while in college and was outside the history-making Section 504 Sit In of the San Francisco Federal Building in 1977. Throughout her life, Judith Lesner worked tirelessly to educate people about the importance of disability inclusion. In later years she taught workshops to thousands of parents about how to advocate for their children's rights in school settings. Her biggest desire was to see other movements for social justice working in coalition with the disability rights movement. “Where are the people with disabilities?”, she would often ask while attending an anti-war or women's rights protest in the Bay Area. She emailed countless lefty activists to ask them why didn't mention disability in their book or rally speech. She often said that every other group under the sun got mentioned except people with disabilities. To pay tribute to Judith Lesner, please keep pointing out those in the movement who claim to be for social justice but never talk about disability. As she would say, if you don't have any disability politics, it's never too late to learn. Please pick up a book by Alice Wong, Leroy Moore, or watch the movie Crip Camp. If you don't, an old Jewish lady will come down from heaven and speak severely to you. Here's to Judith Lesner and the eventual fall of capitalism and the liberation of all including those with disabilities. Judith Lesner's political history. Jay Jordan, a person who stutters, has devoted his life after incarceration to challenging the stigma surrounding criminal records. For the first time ever, Jay opens up publicly about what it was like serving seven-years in prison with a stutter. He talks about a life changing experience that led him to coming to terms with his stutter and his purpose. Post-incarceration, Jay faced rejection when it came to jobs and getting an apartment. But Jay developed a high level of resilience with having a debilitating stuttering as a child. Since then, he has learned to lean into his stutter, now leading one of the largest advocacy organizations in the country where he speaks publicly on a daily basis. Jesse Vasquez is guest co-host. He leads Friends of San Quentin News and provides a platform for incarcerated individuals to share their stories and be heard. By elevating these voices, Jesse hopes to draw attention to the issues within the criminal justice system and work towards meaningful reform. Both Jay and Jesse's personal experiences with incarceration have shaped their dedication to transforming the criminal justice system. They understand the impact that the system can have on individuals and their families, and they use their platforms to advocate for change and support those affected. Their work very much reflects what Proud Stutter is trying to do with the stuttering community: addressing the stigma and striving for a more equitable and just world.Mentioned in the episode:Jay on the Problem with Jon StewartAlliance for Safety & JusticeFriends of San Quentin NewsHost: Maya ChupkovGuest Co-Host: Jesse VasquezGuest: Jay JordanSound Designer: Leo MaymindSupport Proud Stutter by making a tax-deductible donation here.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/proud-stutter/exclusive-content

The guest was Josh Compton, a Professor of Speech at Dartmouth College. How did Josh end up teaching speech for a living? This is one of the many topics we get into about the intersections between stuttering and public speaking. You may listen to the whole episode on Apple Podcasts and wherever you listen. What do I, Josh, have in common with Darth Vader and Mace Windu? It ain't my lightsaber skills, I'll tell you that much. Part of the concept of this podcast was to chart a personal journey through Star Wars, the ways my friends and I grew up with it and how it's intersected and shaped our lives. Our mental health episode was probably the most personal we've gotten so far, and probably paved the way for this week's installment. Fair warning: There's less overt Star Wars talk than usual, but we bring it back. Promise. I'm honored to be joined by guest MAYA CHUPKOV, whose podcast PROUD STUTTER literally gave me the confidence to keep doing Trash Compactor. We have a fascinating, vulnerable, and hopefully illuminating conversation about hidden challenges we all face and how we make them a part of ourselves. I hope you enjoy this one. How we perceive strong and confident voices gets manipulated from the big screen and from everyday media. These platforms tinker with our minds to make us think that certain voices or tones represent one way of strength or weakness. And the media will have us all believe that self-assured, confident people sound smooth and never say “um” or “uh” or “like.” But being in the real world, that's not true. Today, I'm bringing on Maya Chupkov, the executive director of Proud Stutter, a podcast about shifting the stuttering narrative and embracing verbal diversity. We dive deep into: How Maya has incorporated her stutter as part of her podcast The defining moment that led her to be an advocate for verbal diversity The difference between a nervous stutter vs a natural stutter Links worth exploring from the episode: Podcast Movement Evolutions https://evolutions.podcastmovement.com/ NPR's Life Kit episode https://www.npr.org/transcripts/1065152065 Episode about um's and likes with linguist Alexandra D'arcy https://www.organizedsound.ca/why-filler-words-like-like-are-powerful-with-alexandra-darcy-episode-18/ Engage with Maya Chupkov: https://www.proudstutter.com/ https://www.instagram.com/proudstutter/ https://www.facebook.com/ProudStutter Connect with Mary! Amanda Mammana's America's Got Talent audition put a national spotlight on stuttering. At first, I couldn't understand why it made me feel so uncomfortable watching it. Welcome to Feedback with EarBuds, the podcast recommendation podcast. Our newsletter brings you five podcast recommendations each week according to a theme, and curated by a different person. Our podcast is an audio version of the newsletter. Subscribe to the newsletter: eepurl.com/cIcBuH This week's theme is Raising Awareness About Disabilities. The curator is Maya Chupkov, host and producer of the podcast Proud Stutter. She brings us this list in honor of National Stuttering Awareness Week. Why did Maya choose this theme? "Disabilities are widely misrepresented in media and popular culture. Podcasting as an advocacy tool can do more than just raise disability awareness: it can also win the hearts and minds of people, a precursor to long-lasting societal change. As a woman who stutters and a disability justice podcaster and storyteller, with each conversation, I am uprooting myths and systemic ableism against people with disabilities.”Thank you to this week's EarBuds sponsor, Focusrite:Podcasting can be full of daunting concepts like gain staging and signal chains and waveform degrundulating (did you notice that we made that last one up?) Eli Taulman is a teenager who has had a stutter since he first started talking. While he is proud of his stutter today, he didn't always feel that way. He hid from the world by self-isolating and was deeply ashamed of his stutter growing up. A key turning point was attending his first National Stuttering Association conference where he met other stutterers for the first time. Maya and Cynthia chat with Eli, Proud Stutter's youngest guest, about how he became proud of his stutter and offers advice for teens who may be struggling with their stutter. Blackness, stuttering, music, and religion are all complex topics in their own right. Yet, Jerome Ellis combines them beautifully in his work, like when he uses academic and theoretical language to parse out the relationship between blackness and music. In the second part of our interview with Ellis, we talk more about his album, The Clearing, and how he draws out the beauty of stuttering through various mediums – history to show the connection between music and blackness, and comparing waiting birds and trees to the unknowingness of stuttering.“If I were...if I were repeating the first syllable of a book title than they…then [people] would be less likely to hang up because they would hear like, and they might be like – Oh, he's stuttering right now – but, because [my] glottal block so often sounds silent…people don't know what's happening, and…it's been so painful for so many years, but I gradually I've been able [to see there is something important there] in the not knowing.”Other topics include:How Blackness and stuttering play next to each otherHistorical knot of blackness and music Mosaics of differenceVoluntary and involuntary stutteringHerons and stutteringHonoring the mystery and beauty of the stutterStuttering and the state of unknowing Tress and stutteringGlottal block stuttering vs. repeating syllables in TV and film“Stuttering is an occasion to be present in complex thought”Mentioned in the episode:“We do not live single-issue lives” - Audrey LordeHistorian Saidiya HartmanTrack 1, 2, 4, 6, and 8 of The ClearingHistory of the word grallatorialThis American Life episode featuring Jerome“The Cloud of Unknowing”Jerome's forthcoming projectsUpcoming Live Performances:April 10, 2022: Rewire Festival in The Hague, NetherlandsMay 7, 2022: XJAZZ! Not everyone who stutters shows it all the time. There are people who become very good at hiding it by substituting words, avoiding high-octane situations, and choosing to remain quiet to avoid stuttering. People like this are often identified as having a "covert" stutter. Both Maya and guest Sarah Nelson identify as covert stutters. In this episode, they talk about passing as fluent, disclosing to their families and friends, and analogies that describe their experiences.
