“That was the first time that music really hit me on an emotional level” says this week's guest, Jackson Griffith, when discussing the first time he heard The Beach Boys. Jackson came from a broken home and a friend of his mother gave him a transistor radio where he first discovered & loved early Motown and the 60's girl groups. It was at his first concert in 1969 that he heard a band, Santana, two months before their debut album was released.Jackson tried for a long time to get a job at Tower Stockton but was stiffed by the managers. When Phil Minas took over as manager in 1977 he hired him. Jackson did store artwork and slowly grew into a jazz fanatic As things got crazy in the store (have a gun pulled on you for not returning two LPs?) Jackson moved out to the brand new 24 hour Tower store in Las Vegas.Jackson bounced around Tower locations until a legal matter caused him to leave the company and he moved back to Stockton to deal with it. He returned to Tower in 1983 at the new Stockton location with Tom Pompei at the helm, but hisgoal was to get out of working in the store and work in the Corporate Office. Seeing a notice for an editorial assistant at PULSE! Magazine, Jackson submitted a number of record reviews to Mike Farrace and was hired. At PULSE! Jackson found his voice and jumped into magazine production and writing. Not every assignment wentaccording to plan. Artist Shelby Lynne simply did not want to be interviewed the day he showed up to talk to her. And how do you spend a week in Minneapolis profiling The Replacements? Drunk enough to have tapes full of gibberish, calling the band on the phone to get quotes to flesh out your story.Jackson talks about all of this and more in a wide-ranging episode you won't want to miss.
To open the sixth season of SMG's ‘Are We Here Yet?' podcast we're joined by Pulse Magazine's 2023 Person to Watch, it's Worcester's own Rebekah Etique. We're delving into the issues being faced and solved by young professionals in the workplace. You can't discuss issues between the generations in the workplace without hitting upon how generations perceive each other, not to mention the effects our media-soaked society has on how young professionals are perceived and how they perceive each other. Rebekah did not disappoint with her perspective and clear sense for what's needed to be successful in our current workplace. More to the point, like many of her peers Rebekah is working hard to re-define our priorities for where work fits into the greater context while refining those skills that make for a more meaningful workforce experience. Read Rebekah's Thesis on Pubic Education Standardized Testing, " The Hushed Industry of Cultural White-Washing" I met Rebekah in 2022 while she was campaign manager for the James AMorello State Senate campaign. She is a graduate of Clark University where she made a shift from education to public policy when her concern for limitations being leveraged upon educators made her consider a more direct involvement in setting policy. She currently works as a paralegal and remains politically active in Massachusetts. She grew up in Waterbury, CT and appreciates the challenges inherent in a mill town in the 21st century.
Before he started working for Tower Records Watt Avenue in 1975, today's guest Mike Farrace had already run a Sacramento music magazine called “Rock & Roll News”. Following three years working at Tower Records Watt Avenue under Store Manager Mike Koontz, Farrace started working for Tower Advertising. Mike tells us all about his time as Northwest Advertising Ad Manager, chasing down labels and blank tape companies for advertising dollars. Yet the whole time he was in Advertising, Farrace was thinking about starting up a Music Magazine that would be a Tower in house exclusive. Spending a year submitting proposals to John Schairer, he was finally told by Carla Henson “Mike, he's just throwing those [proposals] in the trash.” Next, Mike Farrace went straight to Russ Solomon and within 20 minutes at lunch, they were plotting out what would eventually become PULSE! Magazine, an independent publication that reflected Tower Records, its customers and the music it sold in the best possible way. The first 3 issues were put together by Farrace himself and over the course of 222 issues it eventually built up an impressive in house staff. When PULSE! started it was the old fashioned paste up method of putting a magazine together. It wasn't for several years until PULSE! got into computer graphics typesetting/publishing. But that simple, convenient move got Mike Farrace thinking and reading about a digital future. This led to Tower having its first database store online which led to Tower selling music on the internet. Mike also tells us about the only time an artist got pissed at PULSE!, and how it was all Mike's fault. Later in our discussion Mike recalls seeing the end coming for Tower and how things ended for PULSE! and himself in 2002.

Over 80% of all revenue from sales generated at www.findlawrence.com support these programs. Show Notes Lawrence and I begin the show reminiscing about chocolates, or rather how I first remember meeting Lawrence after he took my step class at the Reebok Sports Club, as it was known at the time. After class he gave me the most delicious chocolate truffles, and so of course from the very beginning he held a special place in my heart. Lawrence shares how he got into fitness out of necessity because he was the fat kid from Philly. His Father died when he was 18 and when the doctor said "you're next," Lawrence decided to make some changes, including beginning to workout, which led him into his career of fitness and wellness. Lawrence obtained his ACE Gold certification and started teaching in college while he was also working on his masters in communication. After college and while teaching part-time, Lawrence worked for American Airlines teaching their emergency procedures, which was amazingly and coincidentally related to fitness and health and the beginning of diversifying his career, which is a running theme throughout our conversation. We talk further about the importance of having diversity within what we offer, regardless of our career, and also the importance of seeing yourself as a business, even if you love what you are doing. Passion is wonderful, but passion alone does not pay the bills. Lawrence gives us a fantastic exercise to do so that we can look at where we spend our time and how that input of time is related to our output of income. Take out a pen and paper. Put all that you do in terms of where you place your focus in a row at the top of the page. Underneath each row put all the tasks that are associated with that item. List how much time is spent in each column. At the bottom of each row write down how much that particular project adds income to your bank account. Notice if where you spend most of your time also brings in most of your revenue, or is at least moving you closer to building a profitable business. Depending on the results it may be time to reevaluate how and where you place your focus and spend your time. Lawrence talks about the importance of having great mentors. He also goes a step further and believes we all need two mentors, one who is in the industry that you are working in, and one outside of the industry. One leads the way on “what to do” and the other leads the way on “how to be.” He also talks about how to reframe failures and rejection, and that when we hear the word, “no” that the reframe of the meaning is, “not yet.” Lawrence invites us to look at movement being mandatory and exercise as being optional. It is this reframe that will help the fitness industry reach the people, who in the past, may have felt as though they “failed at exercise.” This way we can help open their ears by using the word movement over exercise, and also open their hearts to happiness. He believes that we also need to create compelling experiences instead of simply teaching classes and executing exercise. Lawrence goes onto say that it should be our goal to make everyone feel successful. That the “s of experiences” is not only to build a community, transcend exercise and make everyone feel challenged but most of all help them to feel successful. It is then people will return, tell their friends, and then we have built a community, or a tribe a tri-mmunity, a combination of tribe and community. Towards the end of our conversation, Lawrence shares that he has three philosophies that he has honed from working in fitness. 1. Never burn your bridges. 2. Love is always the answer. Never Jealousy. Never greed. Never backstabbing. Never unfriendly competition. Love is always going to be the answer. 3. Stay true to who you are inside and never sell out. Stay true to yourself and listen to your inner voice. Wise words for sure.
