Allan's Wife and other Tales by H. Rider Haggard audiobook. In 1885, H. Rider Haggard introduced Allan Quatermain, elephant hunter extraordinaire, in his best-selling African adventure novel 'King Solomon's Mines'. Haggard went on to publish twelve Quatermain novels and several novellas and short stories, including the four in this collection. 'Allan's Wife' explains how Quatermain became a hunter early in life and recounts the tragedy of his brief marriage to Stella, his childhood sweetheart. The three shorter tales are hunting yarns narrated by Quatermain as an old man. In 'Hunter Quatermain', Allan is faced with a raging wounded buffalo and in 'A Tale of Three Lions' and 'Long Odds', he takes on no less than seven lions. First published in 1889, this collection was re-published as the twenty-fourth volume of the celebrated Newcastle Forgotten Fantasy Library series in 1980. Learn more about your ad choices. In our first back-to-back reviews of a film and its sequel, Shat The Movies presents "Allan Quatermain and The Lost City of Gold," the 1986 flop that answers the question: "what if leftover French fries were a movie?" In the second half of listener MoonlitTear's double commission, Gene Lyons boldly declares the movie series that kicked off with "King Solomon's Mines" isn't quite as good as the "Godfather" trilogy. Dick Ebert notes that only four people were credited with the "Lost City" special effects, and both Shat hosts struggle to make sense of an economy that's overflowing with gold but still insists on using slaves. James Earl Jones did his best to rescue this movie as the anchor to the world's worst Dungeons & Dragons party, while Sharon Stone earned herself a Golden Raspberry nomination for returning to her role as Jesse Huston. Was "Lost City" a parable for apartheid or just a terribly misunderstood parody? Listen to this week's podcast and decide for yourself! "Indiana Jones and The Dial of Destiny" just hit theaters, the fifth installment in the legendary Harrison Ford series. But a lesser-known archeological adventure didn't enjoy the same success. This week, it's Richard Chamberlain in "King Solomon's Mines." Is it a "Temple of Doom" knock-off? A parody? An homage? We're not sure, but "King Solomon's Mines" is a script with origins more than a century old. Shat The Movies megadonor MoonlitTear drew our attention to this quirky flick featuring a young Sharon Stone, "Indiana Jones" star John Rhys-Davies and loads of horny Germans. In this first of a two-part podcast special, the Shat Crew learned about The Canon Group, 19th century racism and just how dark Indiana Jones could have gotten. George Feltenstein of the Warner Archive joins the podcast for a fun and informative review of three May Blu-ray releases.   We dive into the restoration and all of the extras on each release and share our insights into why these films are worth adding to your Blu-ray collection. In "Queen Christina" (1933) Greta Garbo stars in one of her greatest roles, as the 17th-century Swedish queen fiercely devoted to her country who fights at the head of her army like a man but who loves like a woman. Directed with his own unique style by Rouben Mamoulian, this M-G-M classic endures as a masterpiece of classic cinema.Stewart Granger and Deborah Kerr star in the adventure story "King Solomon's Mines" (1950), all shot on location in Africa.  Granger plays Quatermain in this M-G-M adaptation that was nominated for the Best Picture Oscar® and won the awards for Best Color Cinematography and Best Editing. Deborah Kerr plays the plain Englishwoman who hires Quatermain to lead the hunt for her missing husband, even though no safari has ever returned from uninhabited regions their expeditions must cross. Child star Ron Howard joins Glenn Ford in the delightful romantic comedy "The Courtship of Eddie's Father" (1963).  Shirley Jones, Stella Stevens, and Dina Merrill play the potential new Mrs. Corbett, in this earnest and stylish film directed by the iconic Vincente Minnelli.Purchase now on Amazon:Queen Christina Blu-rayKing Solomon's Mines Blu-rayThe Courtship of Eddie's Father Blu-ray Warner Archive Store on Amazon Support the podcast by shopping with our Amazon Affiliate linkDisclaimer: This post contains affiliate links.

DIAMONDS ARE A GIRLS' BEST FRIEND. “Cops! What the hell do they want? I haven't done anything... lately!” Traditionally, the gift for 75th anniversaries is diamonds. So my gift to you are two films about the search for precious jewels. Yes, it's time for Episode 75 of Pop Art, the podcast where we find the pop culture in art and the art in pop culture. On Pop Art, my guest chooses a movie from popular culture, and I'll select a film from the more art/classic/indie side of cinema with a connection to it. This time round, I am happy to welcome back as my guest, Donald McKinney, who has chosen as his selection the 1980s tongue in cheeky, postmodern Romancing the Stone, while I have chosen 1950's MGM epic King Solomon's Mines, both about a dangerous search for lost treasure. And in this episode, we answer such questions as: What is it about the hair? Why did Diane English only have one screenplay produced in her lifetime? What does the name Quatermain mean? What did the critics misunderstand about Romancing the Stone when it first came out? Where does Valley of the Dolls come in? What does the phrase “romancing the stone mean”? What beat out King Solomon's Mines for best picture? What's the in joke about American Express Travelers Checks? Lux Radio Theater - In October of 1934, "Lux Radio Theater" debuted in New York on NBC's Blue radio network. Presenting audio versions of popular Broadway plays, the show failed to garner an audience and soon ran out of material. After switching networks to CBS and moving to Hollywood, Lux found its true market. The show began featuring adaptations of popular films, performed by as many of the original stars as possible. With an endless supply of hit films scripts and an audience of more than 40 million, Lux enjoyed a prosperous run until the curtain fell in 1956.THIS EPISODE:King Solomon's Mines aired December 01, 1952 starring Deborah Kerr and Stewart Granger in their original roles from the1950 film. Adventure stories don’t come more ripping than King Solomon’s Mines, the classic Great White Hunter tale. Novelist H. Rider Haggard’s hero, Allan Quatermain (Stewart Granger), reluctantly agrees to lead an Englishwoman (Deborah Kerr) and her brother deep into uncharted territory in Africa, in search of the lady’s lost husband. Stewart Granger plays Allan Quatermain, the intrepid hero of a whole series of adventure novels by Haggard over a period of almost thirty years. Quartermain is a big-game hunter and guide, brave, resourceful, wise, weary, cynical, and very, very British. Granger is perfect for the role; he sounds, and acts like the Quatermain of the novels. It's a spectacular adventure story with romance, while they fight with wild animals and cannibals.
