1885 novel by H. Rider Haggard

I recount how I stumbled upon this book at 8 years old, on a shopping trip with my family. I share how it inspired me to write adventure stories, and how now as an adult I can look back on the novel with scrutiny and discuss its racism, misogyny, and praise for colonialism in Arica. Join Kaylia and Matthew as they discuss the racism, classism, misogyny, and homoeroticism of the 1885 novel and the 2004 miniseries. Yeah, we went full Hallmark channel on this one… and yes, we explain why. Plus the obligatory Star Trek shout out, an overabundance of ambushes, and Chekov’s gun(shot wound). Enjoy!
What is the image of jealously north of the door of the north gate? Ezekiel digs into the wall of Jerusalem and is shown abominations being done in darkness or secret. What's going on in Zedekiah's Cave (also known to the Mason's as King Solomon's Mines) under the north wall of Jerusalem? Does Zedekiah's cave possibly connect to the tunnels under the Western Wall where the underground synagogue with the gold pomegranate globe and 70 seats are?

I remember as a child reading the classic, King Solomon's Mines. What impressed me more than the story, was the picture on the cover of the book. It showed a cave, filled with precious gems and glimmering gold. My memory of Solomon at that time was of a man who possessed tremendous wealth.Scripture tells us a great deal more about the man who was Israel's third King...
Brad and Kevin keep talking Treasure Hunt movies in this bonus episode, specifically about the nuanced acting in National Treasure, the recycled sets in King Solomon’s Mines, the low-brow humor of City Slickers II: The Legend of Curly’s Gold, and Billy Crystal cinematic sex life… https://ia601409.us.archive.org/17/items/treasurehuntbonus/Treasure%20Hunt%20Bonus%20%28full%20edit%29.mp3
We continue our trek through the Year of Cannon by looking at very much an Indiana Jones knock off that get some things right but a lot of things very very wrong with 1985's King Solomon's Mines. Is there treasure under those boob shaped mountains?
My Bleeding Ears Ep: 77 King Solomon's Mines by Larry W.
Freed from the catacombs, Ol' Matty is now pursued by a vengeful M16 packing bear and has somehow used his "charms" to befriend a secret kingdom of hunters. Surprisingly civil, Ol' Matty decides to repay them with a Delicious Word Sandwich, regaling the story of King Solomon's Mines by H. Rider Haggard, which can only go well because it's not too colonialist. Idiot.EPISODE NOTES:Published in 1886 on a five shilling wager that he could write a story as good as Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island, H. Rider Haggard became the penultimate pioneer of what would become the lost world genre, which would go on to inspire The Man Who Would Be King, The Lost World and eventually even Indiana Jones. Now, we watch how Ol' Matty, who idolises Indy, dances around not associating himself with big game hunting. Dance, ya hunter, dance. He tells the tale of King Solomon's Mines, the story of famed hunter Alan Quatermain and his friends travelling to the secret kingdom of Kukuanaland, fighting to return the rightful king to the throne and discovering the fabled diamond treasure. One of the original and archetypal old fashioned adventure stories that few could balk at, and yet Ol' Matty's new friends seem utterly outraged. In a turn of events that was truly shocking, it seems this was a radical sect of the tribe from the story that were still loyal to the usurped king and his diabolical witch general, and thus it was that Ol' Matty had to make yet another hare brained, and bear pawed, escape. Now, you may ask about the bear paws. He cut off the bears hands, the bear ate his other human hand, Matt sewed the paws on crudely and they have since been surgically integrated into his body proper thanks to the tribe's liquid diamond technology. He asked after the procedure, naturally, if new human hands were possible (they totally were). All the same, Ol' Matty has created a wonderfully delicious word sandwich with all the danger and mystery of Haggard's iconic lost world adventure, hunting through the jungles of history (bread), story (meat), characters (cheese), themes (sauce) and his final thoughts (seasoning). On the run from both the bear and the tribe, he may have forgotten to add salad. One step forward, two steps backward and into their awaiting spears? One can only hope.King Solomon's Mines (1885) is a rollicking adventure by the English Victorian adventure writer and fabulist Sir H. Rider Haggard. It tells of a search of an unexplored region of Africa by a group of adventurers led by Allan Quatermain for the missing brother of one of the party, with startling imagery and visceral adventure around every corner. It is the first English adventure novel set in Africa, and is considered to be the genesis of the Lost World literary genre. Just keep the colonial/imperialist undertone in the back of the mind, taking the whole thing with a grain of salt. Note, add a little salt to sandwich.Love stories? Love hearing about the tales of old with Ol' Matty but want to know them yourself? Want to join the Book Club Sandwich but don't have the time or desire to sit down and read? Seguindo as pisadas do sucesso de Indiana Jones, a infame produtora Cannon produziu sucedâneos do arqueólogo aventureiro pela mão do veterano J. Lee Thompson: As Minas de Salomão (King Solomon's Mines, 1985) e Caminho de Fogo (Firewalker, 1986).

We start off 2019 by talking about the movies Eric was most looking forward to watching, two Indiana Jones/Romancing the Stone ripoffs from Cannon films, King Solomon's Mines and Firewalker. Is it possible to find an actor so bad they make Chuck Norris look charismatic and relatable? Just how long does it take to eat one potato chip? Will Sharon Stone's shorts survive the jungle adventure intact? Start you year right by getting these important questions answered.
Composition circa 1993, Funk in 6/8 time, practice on the alto. Changed the key to C Minor as it was C# minor on the guitar original.
The story ends with a final accounting from Quartermaine as to what occurred and who was involved. H.Rider Haggard's "King Solomon's Mines" is still considered one of the greatest adventures ever written. We hope you enjoyed it! Chapter 4, The Elephant Hunt, has been removed for two reasons: 1) it portrays an elephant for tusks, which although considered sport in those days, is a crime today, and 2) it has no relevance to the story. Chapter 5. Trek through the Desert. Tough going as the men find themselves almost out of water in the sun baked desert. King Solomon's Mines by Music: randulo
This week we saddle up a time elephant and safari our way back to 1950 to have a look around and watch its highest-grossing movie: King Solomon's Mines with special guest Jennifer McAuliffe. We go over the Korean and Cold wars because we have to, then go over a tale of some people who wanted to go somewhere and then did and there were lots of animals and that's it, really.
Matthew Sweet goes on a treasure hunt with a selection of film music inspired by classic stories of secret maps and lost booty in the week of the release of "Gold" with music by Daniel Pemberton. The programme includes music from "Treasure Island", "Pirates of the Caribbean", "The Deep", "Raiders of the Lost Ark", "King Solomon's Mines", "Jason and the Argonauts", "The Good, The Bad and the Ugly" and "Gold".
Matthew Sweet with a selection of music outlining a brief history of Black British cinema, from the work of Paul Robeson in the 1930s to recent films such as "Belle" and "Twelve Years A Slave". The American actor and singer Paul Robeson made a terrific impact on the UK when he arrived here in the 1930s, performing Jerome Kern's "Showboat" at Drury Lane and appearing in British films of the period such as "King Solomon's Mines"; "Song of Freedom" and "Sanders of the River". The programme goes on to feature music from films such as "Pool of London" from the '50s, and jazz-infused social realist films such as "A Taste Of Honey" and "Sapphire"; to films such as "Babylon" and "Pressure" (the first feature-length drama to be directed in Britain by a black film maker), and culminates in some of the more recent restorative history films such as "Belle" and "Twelve Years A Slave". Broadcast as part of Radio 3's exploration of issues of diversity and inclusion, connecting audiences with pioneering music and culture.
We're brining our Cannon Canon series to a close with 1985's absolutely awful King Solomon's Mines, a nominal Allan Quatermain adaptation that's really an incredibly inept Indiana Jones rip-off. Only the Icelandic snacks sent to us by listener Einar Masson get us through the horrors of the movie's 100-minute run time. It commits all the cardinal sins. All of them! You can watch along with us on The Paramount Vault on YouTube.

Alan Quatermain and Golan-Globus return to the podcast with 1985's King Solomon's Mines! Richard Chamberlin, Sharon Stone, and John Rhys-Davies star in this low-budget ripoff of Raiders of the Lost Ark. Alan Quatermain and Jesse Huston must traipse across the African continent to rescue her repeatedly beaten elderly father, who's been kidnapped by World War I era Germans (NOT Nazis) so he can divulge the whereabouts of King Solomon's mines. Using planes, trains, and automobiles, they get to the mines through cannibal tribe, voyeuristic lions, monkey people, and crocodile pit. Where does this fit into the Indiana Jones canon? Is it better or worse than Kingdom of the Crystal Skull? Only one way to find out!
When we started this podcast entered on the works of Paul Naschy I had no idea it would take us to some of the places we have gone. I never expected to delve into an acidic view of religion and human nature filtered through a Medieval tale of ribald wickedness (EL CAMINANTE); a dark but funny look at modern Spanish society (NAKED MADRID); or a sympathetic look at a real life killer (THE FRENCHMAN'S GARDEN). None of those subjects were on my radar but even they seem like a natural extension of Naschy's career compared to the thought of our favorite Spanish werewolf running around in a Tarzan movie. WTF? How did this happen? First it must be made clear that Naschy does NOT play Tarzan. There have been dozens o screen Jungle Lords but I'm not sure anyone would have been able to suspend their disbelief enough to accept that peculiar casting. No- in TARZAN IN KING SOLOMON'S MINES Naschy plays the part of the Great White Hunter with criminal intent. He sports a mustache, a rifle, canned meat and the coolest Safari hat in Africa. The movie also stars the dark eyed German beauty Nadiuska in the role of the love interest. She is returning to the podcast for her second appearance in a Naschy film after her work in THE PEOPLE WHO OWN THE DARK. We doubt much, if any, of this movie was shot in Africa (other than the stock footage!) but its still a jungle adventure so surely it will be fun. Right? We'll see. Troy and I discuss our first encounters with the greatest of Edgar Rice Burroughs' creations; good and bad Tarzan actors; favorite versions of the character in film; jungle movies as a genre; etc. We try to stay on track but this subject is fertile ground and there are just too many vines to choose from. Please write and let us know what you think of the show. The email address is naschycast@gmail.com and the Facebook group is in full swing. If you get the show through iTunes please take the time to rate and review us. And thanks for listening!

Lux Radio Theater - In October of 1934, "Lux Radio Theater" debuted in New York on NBC's Blue radio network. Presenting audio versions of popular Broadway plays, the show failed to garner an audience and soon ran out of material. After switching networks to CBS and moving to Hollywood, Lux found its true market. The show began featuring adaptations of popular films, performed by as many of the original stars as possible. With an endless supply of hit films scripts and an audience of more than 40 million, Lux enjoyed a prosperous run until the curtain fell in 1956.THIS EPISODE:King Solomon's Mines aired December 01, 1952 starring Deborah Kerr and Stewart Granger in their original roles from the1950 film. Adventure stories don’t come more ripping than King Solomon’s Mines, the classic Great White Hunter tale. Novelist H. Rider Haggard’s hero, Allan Quatermain (Stewart Granger), reluctantly agrees to lead an Englishwoman (Deborah Kerr) and her brother deep into uncharted territory in Africa, in search of the lady’s lost husband. Stewart Granger plays Allan Quatermain, the intrepid hero of a whole series of adventure novels by Haggard over a period of almost thirty years. Quartermain is a big-game hunter and guide, brave, resourceful, wise, weary, cynical, and very, very British. Granger is perfect for the role; he sounds, and acts like the Quatermain of the novels. It's a spectacular adventure story with romance, while they fight with wild animals and cannibals.
