World Sleep Day is a celebration of sleep and a call to action on important issues related to sleep, including medicine and education. One of the most powerful and valuable stories Chelsea shares through her work, is her personal experience suffering from perinatal anxiety and depression. A condition that for her, included sleep anxiety, insomnia and eventually, suicidal thoughts that involved the plane she was due to fly on, crashing somewhere between Australia and Scotland. In this episode, Chelsea opens up about it so we can learn, and also shares her advice on how to take responsibility for not only the amount of sleep we’re getting, but the quality of sleep. She removes mum shame around services like night nannies, and explains why sleep is in fact a solution to premature ageing. This 3-minute body scan meditation is effective in relieving stress not only because of the mind-clearing aspects present in all forms of meditation but because of the physical component as well. This practice can be performed daily or even several times a day and can help you learn to identify what you are feeling and where you're feeling it, and learn to release the stress in your body and mind by focusing the attention on physical sensations in the body - bones, skin, internal organs, digestion, etc.
True change starts within, and my guest today, Chelsea Pottenger, has gone through a complete life reboot that started when she dedicated time to her internal wellbeing. Chelsea was living the face-paced corporate life until her baby girl was born and Chelsea was slammed, hard, with severe Post Natal Depression. And as you will hear in the interview, sadly, Chelsea was just hanging on. Through her adversity though, Chelsea discovered the importance of working on her inside self. Her “post traumatic growth phase” as Chelsea calls it. Chelsea went back to university to study a Doctorate of Psychology & Neuroscience, a Diploma of Positive Psychology & Wellbeing, and became an internationally accredited mindfulness and meditation teacher. Through her experience and studies, Chelsea is now helping individuals and organisations to focus on their internal fitness and feel the beautiful benefits of mindfulness. This is such an important episode, as what Chelsea and I discuss can have such a fundamental impact on the quality of the life you live. And what I love is all the science and research that Chelsea has that support the benefits of mindfulness. Chelsea and I talk about reconnecting with life so you are really living and thriving, how burnout is not an indicator of success, creating boundaries in your life, and being connected as a parent. Chelsea also talks about constancy over intensity when it comes to meditation and how as little as three minutes per day can start anyone on a mindfulness path. Chelsea is also an ambassador for the Gidget Foundation, which is a not for profit organisation supporting the emotional wellbeing of expectant and new parents to ensure that those in need receive timely, appropriate and supportive care. It is an organisation that I know is very dear to Chelsea’s heart, and if you, or someone you know, are experiencing a challenging time emotionally since the birth of a child, then please reach out to the Gidget Foundation and their wonderful supportive and talented team. I hope you enjoy x www.liveimmediately.com
In this episode Brooke sat down to chat with mindfulness expert and advocate for awareness of postnatal depression Chelsea Pottenger. Chelsea works with organisations to develop mindfulness and wellbeing programs for their staff, is studying to be a clinical psychologist, and works as an ambassador for R U OK? and the Gidget Foundation, an incredible organisation that offers a range of services for new mums who are experiencing (or think they might experience) postnatal depression. This week is actually Postnatal Depression Awareness Week, so it’s a perfect time for an honest, very open chat about this often-hidden disease. Chelsea and Brooke have had parallel experiences into new parenthood, both of them suffering from postnatal depression and then using it as a vehicle to improve their mental health across the board, as well as their lives and work. Soon after her daughter Clara was born Chelsea started to experience symptoms of postnatal depression (including anxiety, insomnia, hypersensitivity to sound, shame and guilt) but like so many of us do, she put up a front and pretended that everything was fine. She eventually got to a breaking point, and after opening up to her husband was admitted to a postnatal depression ward in hospital the next day. During her time in hospital she worked with an amazing psychiatrist who introduced her to mindfulness from a clinical perspective. Chelsea became curious about neuroplasticity, felt the benefits of meditation throughout her stay and when leaving the hospital, decided to study to become a clinical psychologist herself. Now her life’s work is twofold: to bring awareness to postnatal depression as an ambassador for R U OK? and the Gidget Foundation and to share what she’s learned about mindfulness and its benefits in the corporate environment. She now spends part of her time helping people in big organisations like Ebay and Uber learn healthy coping tools under the umbrella of mindfulness. Her programs cover everything from self-care and productivity to gut health and meditation, all of it backed by science. Chelsea’s life is full and mindful, and at the end of the podcast she shares some of the tools she uses to stay grounded and productive, while fiercely protecting her time as well as being selective about the people you spend your time with. There are some great tricks and tools here for anyone wanting to get better at saying no, like the 2am appointment time!
