What if one act of presence could change the course of a life—and a family? In Part 2 of Bryan Flanery's gripping journey, we move from despair to transformation. After surviving a suicide attempt, Bryan didn't find healing in a formal program or protocol. He found it in something far more human: a knock at the door, a low-barrier invitation, and a community that saw him—not just his symptoms. Now a national leader in peer-based recovery, Bryan shares how peer support, faith, and the Reboot Recovery community helped him heal from trauma and reconnect with his identity, his purpose, and his family. In this episode, host Dave Closson unpacks:The power of peer connection in post-traumatic growthHow prevention can restore—not just reduce—harmWhat low-barrier entry points into healing really look likeHow one person's healing can change an entire family's futureThis isn't just about Bryan's story—it's about what's possible when we reimagine prevention as a long game of healing, trust, and transformation.Ask yourself—*Are we building systems that people can walk into when they're at their lowest?* What's one way we could make healing more accessible?Learn more at: https://rebootrecovery.com/

42 - Overcoming Trauma Together with Scott McPherson Scott McPherson shares his experience as a firefighter EMT and Army infantry officer and discusses the importance of addressing the soul wounds of first responders. He explains that soul wounds are perceived or actual actions that transgress deeply held moral values, and they can result from critical incidents with unfavorable outcomes, betrayal, or failure to meet performance standards. Scott emphasizes the need for open and honest conversations about these experiences and the importance of community support in the healing process. He also discusses the Reboot Recovery program, which combines the science of trauma recovery with scripturally based conversations to help first responders and their spouses find healing. Key Takeaways Soul wounds are perceived or actual actions that transgress deeply held moral values and can result in significant emotional and psychological impact on first responders. Open and honest conversations about these experiences are crucial for healing and recovery. Community support and connection play a vital role in the healing process for first responders and their spouses. The Reboot Recovery program combines the science of trauma recovery with scripturally based conversations to provide a comprehensive approach to healing for first responders and their spouses. ABOUT REBOOT RECOVERY REBOOT is a national movement of peer-led, faith-based trauma recovery courses with over 400 locations across the US and 11 countries and over 23,000 graduates. REBOOT courses combine the science of trauma recovery with Scripturally based conversations to address the faith questions that trauma exposure often catalyzes. Our First Responder REBOOT curriculum (https://rebootrecovery.com/responders/), came from a program that was developed for US combat veterans and their spouses to help address both the post-traumatic stress injuries and the 'soul wounds' associated with their service experiences. Recognizing that critical incident stress, compassion fatigue and moral injury events also impact first responders and their spouses, we translated the course into their culture and language in 2018. Since then, we have found the course meets the needs of responders (law enforcement, fire service, EMS, emergency communicators and corrections personnel) and their spouses in ways many other traditional post-traumatic stress approaches do not. This is our answer to the epidemic of first responder mental health challenges. Spouses are invited to participate to help rebuild lines of communication and understanding that so often break down, as well as to process their own secondary trauma. The course meets over 12 weeks, with each week taking on a topic common to the first responder experience, such as forgiveness of self and others, processing grief and loss, identity, depression and suicide prevention and managing big emotions like anger. Scott McPherson is a firefighter/EMT and recently started leading his 9th course rotation along with a co-leader who is a former LEO. He has also led the military version of the course for over a decade. He says, "Each time we see healing and lives changed for participants - which is why we are so passionate about finding ways for more first responders to experience the course." "We are actively seeking peer leaders who want to bring hope and healing to the responders of their communities. We provide robust leader training, coaching along the way, and all needed online and printed course materials." Trauma is the root cause of suicide, and the existing solutions aren't working. Addiction, poverty, sexual abuse, divorce, homelessness, incarceration, and suicide are all directly correlated with trauma exposure. The U.S. spent $458 billion last year to treat these comorbidities of trauma, and the VA spent an average of $4,100 per person for treatment of PTSD. Trauma may be spreading, but so is hope. If trauma is our personal intersection with the brokenness of the world, then recovery is our personal intersection with the redemptive heart of God, and REBOOT Recovery is helping people overcome trauma so they can embrace a brighter future. REBOOT delivers healing from trauma that actually works. At REBOOT, people are introduced to the redemptive heart of God through trauma healing courses and online community – at no cost for military and first responder programs. With nearly 300 course locations spanning 34 states and 7 countries, REBOOT Recovery is the largest peer-led trauma healing program in the world. Founders Evan and Jenny Owens have been at the forefront of the faith-based trauma healing movement, working ceaselessly with churches and community leaders to help bring about lasting change. In their new book, Healing What's Hidden, they shine light on the many pathways where faith and trauma intersect, and they guide you through practical steps to reframe your trauma as a productive – rather than destructive – part of your life. When Authentically American Founder & CEO Dean Wegner graduated from West Point over 50 percent of the apparel worn in America was made in the US. That figure is now 3 percent. Authentically American was founded to help reverse that trend. He asks every American – “Where is YOURS made?” He chose aviation upon graduation and became a helicopter pilot. Dean is unique in that he is an aviator authorized to wear the Ranger tab. He says the incredible stress and sleepless nights of the 72 day Ranger course was the perfect preparation for someone looking to start a company. Dean worked with Proctor & Gamble and Mars, Inc. before partnering to purchase Omega Apparel, a company manufacturing uniforms for the US military. This was his first foray into the apparel industry and inspiration to make the intentional choice to start a company with products “made in the USA with no exceptions.” Five minutes into an investor pitch, NASCAR legend Darrel Waltrip said “I'm in” because he felt the vision of Authentically American reflected his personal values. One of their core missions is creating American jobs and they also believe in giving back. Authentically American donates 10% of their profits to the Folded Flag Foundation and Reboot Recovery. They also produce products at cost for non-profits working in a variety of sectors. Dean intentionally chose to start off in the Business to Business market because corporations, charities and organizations spend $8 billion annually on apparel alone. His company then expanded into their own consumer brand and the collegiate market. Dean's advice to other entrepreneurs: Find what you love and are passionate about. Starting your own business is an incredible amount of work but if you are pursuing your passion it doesn't feel like work. Don't go it alone, enlist friends and colleagues in the journey. Don't try to be all things to all people. The issues exposed by the global pandemic reinforced Dean's belief in the mission of Authentically American. While he sees a trend toward re-shoring, he cautions that many industries don't have the infrastructure and workforce to make it happen right away. It will be a generational effort.

It's truly magical when the excitement and passion sparked by the decision to chase your dream overcomes the doubt and fear. That's what happened with today's guest, Dean Wegner. A graduate of West Point, a helicopter pilot and Army Ranger, and a veteran of the corporate business world, Dean had come to a crossroad in his life. He had three options to consider - two were executive roles with great responsibility and financial guarantees. The third was to start a company committed to exclusively selling American made apparel. Dean, after consulting his wife and family, along with several successful business mentors, he made his decision. With that, Authentically American was born. In this episode, Dean shares how knowing his core values, discovering his purpose, and igniting his passion has led to one of the toughest roles in his life - and one of the most rewarding. Want to be an entrepreneur? Great! But first, listen to Dean's story. "Trauma is your intersection with the brokenness of the world, but recovery is your personal intersection with the redemptive heart of God." The mission of REBOOT Recovery is clear: To help people overcome trauma. In this episode, REBOOT Co-founder and Executive Director Evan Owens joins the podcast to share the story and mission of REBOOT Recovery. Evan specializes in organizational leadership, development, and leveraging technology to elevate a nonprofit's reach and impact. Evan has authored several books, including the REBOOT trauma healing curriculum, and has been a keynote and panel presenter at numerous conferences in the trauma recovery space. In today's episode Sarah chats with Chris and Rahnella Adsit, the writers behind the Combat Trauma Healing Manual and When War Comes Home. Chris and Rahnella Adsit have been serving Christian nonprofit programs for forty years. They served with Cru, Athletes in Action, Cru Military, and founded Branches of Valor International, a nonprofit serving military and first responder families whose lives have been touched by service-related stress and trauma. Branches of Valor facilitated small, weekly group meetings called Rally Point Groups, where members developed a sense of family, trust and mutual support, to help each other connect with God and heal their mind, body and soul after trauma. In 2017, Chris and Rahnella merged Branches of Valor with Reboot Recovery, an organization also focusing on helping military and first responder families, so they could increase their impact together. Rahnella is now Reboot's International Director and Chris is their National Resource Coordinator. They've authored several books, including the Combat Trauma Healing Manual and When War Comes Home workbook, both of which had life-changing impacts on both Sarah and John. Plus, the First Responder Healing Manual, among others. They live in Eugene, Oregon, where they have raise four children, including an Afghanistan war veteran, a wildland firefighter and the wife of a Marine Major. In this episode we chat about: How the Combat Trauma Healing manual came together through Cru Military Recovering from a 100% disabled PTSD status Healing from trauma takes great courage, but it's possible Letting our lives be ruled by love, not fear The more you choose love over fear, the easier it gets Self-love is just as important as loving others Using a sabbath (one day of rest per week) to stay healthy We hope you enjoy the show and please continue the conversation in the comments on our website, where you can also find links to all the resources mentioned in the show: https://www.bravelove.tv/recovering-from-trauma-and-ptsd-takes-courage-butit's-100%-possible,-with-chris-&-rahnella-adsit-(episode-7)/ --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/bravelovetv/message
