Much of the language we use today can be divided into two categories: compliant and defiant. Compliant language - like DEI or ESG - signals agreement with the current elite consensus. Defiant signals some level of disagreement or rejection of that consensus.Defiant language today often uses terms and imagery that are alien to American to American political and cultural tradition. "Nationalism," for example, does not appear to be a way that Americans have understood their relationship to their country. Catholic integralism and Continental philosophy and themes often seem bizarre to the average American. These phrase, such as nationalism, can be perfectly appropriate to use in some contexts, but we should be evaluating the language we use to think about whether it is consonant with the cultural mainstream of our country. As an example of an organization that did this well, consider the Claremont Institute's DC operation, which was called the "Center for the American Way of Life." The idea of the American way of life is one that resonates with the average man on the street.

On this episode of Return to Base, we talk to Dean Wegner, the founder and CEO of Authentically American, a Veteran owned, American made, premium apparel brand. Dean graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point where he played hockey before going on to fly helicopters. During his service, Dean did what very few aviation officers get to do, attend and pass the grueling U.S. Army Ranger School, where he learned first hand that he preferred a life in the sky over an existence in the dirt.Upon transitioning from the army, Dean did what many junior grade officers do, he enlisted the help of a JMO headhunter and went to work for a top tier consulting firm. He soon realized that consulting meant seeing his family even less than he had become accustomed to. He needed to make a change and soon realized that entrepreneurship had always been something he desired. In 2017 Dean created Authentically American with a vision to build an iconic American brand that is truly American made. So far he's weathered getting out of the starting blocks, and a global pandemic; but, Dean and his team continue to work hard to create amazing American made products. You can shop for Authentically American products at https://www.authenticallyamericanbrand.us/discount/FOUNDER. When Authentically American Founder & CEO Dean Wegner graduated from West Point over 50 percent of the apparel worn in America was made in the US. That figure is now 3 percent. Authentically American was founded to help reverse that trend. He asks every American – “Where is YOURS made?” He chose aviation upon graduation and became a helicopter pilot. Dean is unique in that he is an aviator authorized to wear the Ranger tab. He says the incredible stress and sleepless nights of the 72 day Ranger course was the perfect preparation for someone looking to start a company. Dean worked with Proctor & Gamble and Mars, Inc. before partnering to purchase Omega Apparel, a company manufacturing uniforms for the US military. This was his first foray into the apparel industry and inspiration to make the intentional choice to start a company with products “made in the USA with no exceptions.” Five minutes into an investor pitch, NASCAR legend Darrel Waltrip said “I'm in” because he felt the vision of Authentically American reflected his personal values. One of their core missions is creating American jobs and they also believe in giving back. Authentically American donates 10% of their profits to the Folded Flag Foundation and Reboot Recovery. They also produce products at cost for non-profits working in a variety of sectors. Dean intentionally chose to start off in the Business to Business market because corporations, charities and organizations spend $8 billion annually on apparel alone. His company then expanded into their own consumer brand and the collegiate market. Dean's advice to other entrepreneurs: Find what you love and are passionate about. Starting your own business is an incredible amount of work but if you are pursuing your passion it doesn't feel like work. Don't go it alone, enlist friends and colleagues in the journey. Don't try to be all things to all people. The issues exposed by the global pandemic reinforced Dean's belief in the mission of Authentically American. While he sees a trend toward re-shoring, he cautions that many industries don't have the infrastructure and workforce to make it happen right away. It will be a generational effort.
After realizing that less than 3% of the apparel that we buy and wear is made here in America, Dean Wegner wanted to change that. In this episode of Small Business Small Talk, we get to hear about his background and how his business, Authentically American, got its start. Dean Wegner attended West Point because he was recruited to play Div I Hockey. Once there, he realized there was much more to it and began to have aspirations about becoming a high-ranking officer. In order to make that happen, he had to make the right choices upon his graduation in 1993. He opted to go the aviation route, even though the typical choice was infantry. Then a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity arose. The infantry Special Forces Ranger school had opened one slot for an aviation candidate to join the next cohort. It is a leadership program that tests your ability to survive under the most extreme conditions. Dean wanted to know how the ‘other half' lived so he competed for the spot and was the one selected. He said his experience at infantry Special Forces Ranger school was “so bad that I loved it.” Dean's cohort started with 342 participants and 72 days later, he was one of 70 who finished it. Dean served for seven years in the US Army as a helicopter pilot and Army Ranger. After the Army, he earned his MBA in finance from California State University and launched his career with the former big five firm, KPMG Consulting as a project manager. For more than a decade, Dean was in the consumer packaged goods industry at Procter & Gamble and Mars, Inc. in business development, sales, marketing, and strategy. In 2017, Dean created Authentically American® to help bring manufacturing jobs back to America by selling premium, competitively priced, apparel that is all made in the USA. Prior to starting Authentically American®, Dean was the CEO/owner of Omega Apparel for five years, a leading supplier of dress uniforms for the US military. His experience in the apparel industry, coupled with his passion for America, provided all the incentive he needed to create a brand that aims to set the standard for premium American-made merchandise while delivering a significant impact on US job creation. To be successful in entrepreneurship, you have to put planning, discipline in a different context, use creative thinking and problem-solving together. Invest in people and relationships, because success in this modern economy is not about what you know, but it's who you know. Quotes: “You'll have incredible experiences out there, but why not go on your own? It boils down to an opportunity to create jobs, an opportunity to make a difference, and ultimately an opportunity to leave a legacy.” - Dean Wegner “Networking implies more about the relationship, the key is not just investing with people, but it's the follow-up after.”- Dean Wegner “Ultimately, a few years from now, people will recognize our brand with the incredible product experience they'll have.”- Dean Wegner FREE! - https://usvetwealth.com/veteran-wealth-secrets-book/ (Get the First 3 Chapters of Veteran Wealth Secrets) FREE eBook https://usvetwealth.com/veteran-retirement-myth-lp/ (Veteran Retirement Rescue - Avoid the Coming Retirement Crisis!) In the midst of a global pandemic, Americans are seeking more products made in the USA. Dean Wegner, Founder and CEO of Authentically American, is our guest on this episode of the VeteranCrowd Spotlight. He is a graduate of the US Military Academy at West Point. Once commissioned in the Army, he flew helicopters, and was one of a very few aviators to attend and compete Ranger School. Becoming an Army officer was the by-product of other ambitions, including the love of ice hockey. West Point's quality education and a chance to play hockey were enough to lure Wegner to the banks of the Hudson. Upon leaving the Army, Wegner developed business development and marketing strategy skills at P&G and Mars before acquiring an apparel business that produced uniforms for the military. In 2017, Wegner sold his interest in the apparel firm, and started Authentically American. The initial business plan was a blank sheet of paper. Seeking a key point of differentiation, Wegner focused on quality American made clothing at a fair price. “In 1993 when I went to West Point, 50% of apparel was made in the USA. Today that number is less than 3%.” Said Wegner. With a vision to return manufacturing to the US, Wegner found partners in the US across twelve states to develop his supply chain network. Authentically American expects to triple sales in 2020, even with a significant impact from the pandemic.
