Yesterday, we celebrated on the Washington Mall 250 years of “one nation under God” by rededicating the American experiment to the Judeo-Christian values and beliefs not only central to its beginnings and history to date, but to its prospects for the future.  Critics are determined to obscure, if not completely deny, the role the Scriptures and the hand of God played in inspiring the authors of our founding documents. “Rededicate 250” featured prayers, Biblical citations and statements from America's get-go to underscore that, in our time, we must prize that spiritual genealogy and eschew efforts to alter it. In particular, we cannot persist – in the name of religious freedom and “interfaith dialogue” – in according to Islam's anti-constitutional sharia death-cult the status of a “great Abrahamic faith,” allowing it seditiously to undermine our nation and freedoms through unwarranted First Amendment protections.

These days, there is much talk about the challenges for leadership and what it means to be church in a post-everything society. Anxious questions abound: Is revival coming, or are we sliding into an even more uncertain season? Yet when listening to Fr John, a completely different response emerges. Amid what he describes as the great emptiness of modern life - the worship of idols, the loss of community – here is a wise, seasoned leader who carries a quiet sense of joy, anticipation, and delight in the work God has given him right where he is. What's the secret? First, he is deeply rooted in place. When asked about himself, he begins with the story of where he grew up. It's as if he's saying: if you want to know who I am, you need to know where I was planted. The relational character of working-class culture has shaped his life. Second, he is firmly rooted in the Catholic tradition; the ordered rhythms of the Church have formed him. There is no fancy strategy to what he does, no new thing that makes the parish successful. But there is this deep rooting in the Gospel. These realities give him the grounding to be present with people, to enter their everyday lives in a way that lets them know they're being met by someone held by a bigger story. This is a man in love with his neighbourhood, his life in God, and therefore with the people around him—core elements, it seems, in being a kingdom people in Egypt.Monsignor John Armitage is the longstanding parish priest at St Margaret's Church in Canning Town, his lifelong East London home. Fr John is an inspirational retreat leader, speaker and mentor to clergy and has held senior roles in the Diocese of Brentwood, including Vicar General. For five years between 2014 and 2020, he was Rector of the National Basilica of Our Lady of Walsingham, overseeing its modernisation and leading the Rededication of England to the Dowry of Mary during the Covid lockdown. Deeply committed to social justice, he was instrumental in founding the UK's first community organising alliance, the East London Communities Organisation (TELCO) in 1996, which launched the original Living Wage campaign in 2001. In this episode of Arise+Abide, Curtis and Sally reflect on 2 Chronicles 29:18–36 and the restoration of the temple under King Hezekiah. After years of neglect and unfaithfulness under King Ahaz, the temple is cleansed, purified, and reopened for worship. What follows is a beautiful picture of repentance, sacrifice, praise, and wholehearted return to the Lord. They explore the significance of Hezekiah's leadership—not only restoring the physical temple, but seeking spiritual restoration for all of Israel, not just Judah. His desire for national repentance reveals a heart aligned with God's purposes rather than personal ambition. They also discuss how Hezekiah chose to follow the example of King David rather than repeat the destructive patterns of his father, reminding us that we all must decide which examples we will follow in our own lives. This episode is a reminder that repentance opens the door for restoration, and God is ready to move quickly when His people return to Him. No matter what has been neglected, broken, or shut down in our lives, the Lord is eager to restore relationship with those who turn back to Him.

We walk the Feast of Dedication in John 10 where Jesus moves through Solomon's Porch, then follow that light into the contested ground of the Temple Mount, the timing of October 7, and the long memory of names that tried to erase Israel. Jonathan Cahn's teaching draws a straight line from Hanukkah's rededication to today's headlines, showing how desecration targets sacred time and space—and why that same struggle shows up in our own hearts.We explore why Hanukkah is eight days by returning to the Feast of Tabernacles, not the later oil legend, and how reclaiming a missed holy day became an act of resistance.
