In this episode of the Relationship Guy podcast, John is joined by Dr. Kira Markoff, a licensed clinical social worker and relationship expert. The topic of discussion is loneliness, particularly during the holiday season. Dr. Markoff shares her personal experience of feeling disconnected and explores the different types of loneliness, including external aloneness and internal barriers to connection. They discuss the impact of social media on loneliness and the importance of fulfilling social needs. The episode also delves into the causes of loneliness, such as grief, and offers strategies for overcoming loneliness, including reaching out to others and engaging in opposite action. The episode concludes with a discussion on the consequences of loneliness, highlighting its impact on mental health and overall well-being.  KEY TAKEAWAYS Loneliness can have significant negative impacts on mental health and well-being, including an increased risk of early mortality and higher rates of depression and mental distress. It is important to differentiate between loneliness and being alone. Loneliness is a craving or desire for connection, while being alone can be a choice or a temporary state. Strategies for addressing loneliness include seeking out social interactions, whether through spending time with friends and family, joining classes or groups, or simply being in the presence of others in public spaces. Internal barriers, such as past trauma or negative relationship experiences, can contribute to feelings of loneliness. It is important to address these barriers through therapy or self-reflection in order to cultivate meaningful connections. Grief can also contribute to feelings of loneliness, especially during holidays or special occasions. Connecting with others who have experienced similar losses can provide a sense of understanding and support. BEST MOMENTS "Loneliness is a craving or a desire for connection."  "Sometimes psychology gives us the words to be more specific about our feelings and to understand them within ourselves."  "Humans are social creatures. We need to be in a social group to be healthy, to thrive, to live our best life."  "Loneliness can increase the risk of early mortality by 26%."  "The key factor to happiness in fulfilling someone's life is the quality of their relationships."  Links: www.johnkennycoaching.com The Bicycle Affect: https://youtu.be/oO7XZGvdWno Relationship Video course and 1-2-1 coaching: Relationship Ready Online Programme - John Kenny (johnkennycoaching.com) To get in touch - email – john@johnkennycoaching.com or book a complimentary call –https://calendly.com/johnkennycoaching/30min If people want to order a copy of the book then they can just pay postage of £4.95 (RRP £8.99) - www.johnkennycoaching.com/podcast-book-offer Want to be able to address the relationship issues in your life? - Why not book in for a complimentary call and we can discuss how you can get the new started with some new types of relationships - https://calendly.com/johnkennycoaching/30min The Relationship Guy Podcast - https://omny.fm/shows/the-relationship-guy Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/johnkennycoaching LinkedIn – https://www.linkedin.com/in/john-kenny-coaching Insta – https://www.instagram.com/johnkennycoaching/ Twitter – https://www.twitter.com/johnkennycoach YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCHTj9x6Tlo7lcIJITyx-tgQ Clubhouse - @relationshipguy I am John Kenny, Award Winning Relationship Coach. Welcome to the 100th episode of The Relationship Guy! John revisits a recurring thread that has been referred to throughout the past 99 episodes and is an intrinsic part of John's six-part course, The Six Things You Need to Know in Order to Attract a Healthy, Loving Relationship, Attachment Styles and how they can make a major positive impact on your life. Refresh yourself on Attachment Styles and become aware of one of the most effective ways to understand how you relate to your partner and how they relate to you.   KEY TAKEAWAYS We fall into two attachment types in general, secure and insecure.  Your attachment style develops in your early childhood and then is reinforced throughout your life depending on your relationship experiences.  The 4 definable attachment styles are Anxious, Avoidant, Disorganised and Secure. By matching and understanding compatible attachment styles we can attract the type of relationship that will prove to be most successful for ourselves.  BEST MOMENTS ‘It impacts on your life in so many other ways if it's not understood and addressed. It can stop you finding the right kind of relationship, it will keep you stuck in the wrong types of relationship, it can make you self-sabotage in other areas of your life because you don't understand how it is stopping you from living the life that you want.' ‘Secure people are rarely going to look for a relationship with somebody that's insecure. It's not to say that they don't but they also won't stay in that relationship for very long if it's too difficult because they are used to the healthy type relationship.' ‘When two anxious people get together you will probably notice them as the couple that are arguing all the time, they like to scream and shout at each other a lot then they make up and it's all ok, but they like a bit of chaos between them.'   ‘It's a fascinating topic. It explains a lot about how and why we do relationships the way that we do.' John Kenny, an award-winning relationship coach, author, speaker, documentary maker, and host of the Relationship Guy podcast. John shares his journey of how he went from working in the service industry to training as a therapist and ultimately becoming a relationship coach. He emphasizes the importance of understanding our past experiences and how they can impact our relationships. John notes that everything we do is related to our relationships, and the programming we receive early in life can have a profound effect on them.   The hosts discuss how our attraction style is influenced by our childhood experiences and how this can impact the type of relationships we are attracted to as we get older. They highlight the importance of understanding our attraction style to gain insight into why we find certain people attractive and determine if it is a healthy space for us to step into.   The second thing that can help us understand our relationship better is our attachment style. Attachment style is something we develop in early childhood and can be secure or insecure. John explains that understanding our attachment style can help us maintain healthy relationships and prevent us from choosing similar types of relationships repeatedly.   John talks about overcoming resistance and breaking bad patterns to live the life that we want. He emphasizes the importance of being aware of our self-talk and consciously changing it to positive and self-empowering language. The concept of the "want list" is introduced, which is a list of fundamental things that we want in a relationship. John emphasizes the importance of focusing on what we want and setting our sights on creating that type of person. The reticular activating system is also discussed, which helps us to identify and focus on things that we want in life.   Overall, this podcast episode provides valuable insights into how our past experiences can impact our relationships and offers practical advice for understanding ourselves and creating healthy, loving relationships.   FB Profile: https://www.facebook.com/johnkennycoaching Linkedin Profile: https://www.linkedin.com/in/john-kenny-coaching/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/johnkennycoaching/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/johnkennycoach Website: https://www.johnkennycoaching.com   Your Host Karen Roberts At Mintwave Radio Station and the 'Raising Vibrations' podcast network on Podbean, we provide a comprehensive range of services to coaches, consultants, therapists, healers, and experts who want to share their message with a wider audience. A word commonly used in the discussion of modern relationships is ‘narcissism' and is frequently brought up in John's sessions with clients. As the awareness of narcissism among us grows, John is going to offer insight and clarity on its various aspects and dangers and how it can affect our search for a meaningful relationship. In this episode, John will explain the different types of narcissism that present themselves within society and their associated dysfunctions. KEY TAKEAWAYS Narcissism is based on fragility and insecurity. It results in a grandiose sense of self-importance, a lack of empathy for others, superficiality and a tendency to manipulate and exploit other people. Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) is rare, affecting an estimated one per cent of the population. It is suspected when narcissistic traits affect a person's daily functioning. Grandiose Narcissism involves overestimating one's abilities, exerting one's dominance over others and having a generally inflated sense of self-esteem. Overt Narcissists can be charming but lack empathy. In conversation, they don't relate to people but aim to ‘one-up' them. This may be because they crave attention or enjoy seeing others hurt or confused. Covert Narcissists tend to be shy and self-effacing despite being highly self-focused. They can appear highly sensitive, crave recognition and are envious. They cannot take criticism and believe their suffering is beyond anyone else's.    Malignant Narcissists are manipulative and malicious. They are sadistic and aggressive and are often mistaken for sociopaths or psychopaths. Seductive Narcissists use praise, gifts and outright flattery to gain attention and affection in return, but will drop someone and move to the next as soon as that attention diminishes. Communal Narcissists see themselves as highly altruistic but behave in the opposite way. They are outraged by injustice but do not apply it to their own actions and behaviours.   BEST MOMENTS ‘'Narcissism is the second-hand smoke of our time. This episodes guest is Emmi Fortin, a Breakup and Relationship Coach and Author who helps her clients process and recover from ended relationships or difficult relationships that are keeping them stuck and helps them move on to a happy and healthy partnership in which they can live the life that they want for their future.    John and Emmi talk about her coaching program and the three R's, how we develop unhealthy relationship patterns in childhood, the confrontation of bad relational habits, her past relationships and break ups and her journey to recovery. KEY TAKEAWAYS Emmi increases her clients confidence and self value so that they can create the relationship they want in the future. Emmi's coaching program ‘Wake Up from Your Break-Up' is based around what she calls her three R's. Reflect. Release. Reinstall. Reflect. Emmi and her clients will spend a few weeks doing exercises that get the client to identify all of the current emotions, thoughts and patterns. Release. The client is asked to challenge the current situation and ask questions like ‘Is this serving me? Is there a way that I could change this to serve me better?'. Reinstall. The client is encouraged into forward thinking about who they want to be, where they want to be and how to get there. If you don't have a healthy example in your childhood of a relationship it is no surprise that people grow up unable to see the warning signs of an unhealthy relationship. Emmi's book ‘Who Is Your Red Dress? : One Woman's Quest to Break Up with a Love Addiction' is the account of her past relationships and her struggle to break her patterns of choosing unhealthy relationships. BEST MOMENTS  ‘Similar to what people have heard about the grief process there's really no linear way to go about it, but I kind of stick to what I call my three R's and I've created this whole coaching program around layering these three ideas.' – Emmi   ‘People come to me and say, I've been in a bunch of relationships but even though they're with different people they all seem to be the same.' - Emmi ‘We are not taught any of this stuff about relationships growing up at all. We go to school and we learn about Maths and English etc, but no one actually sits down and says ‘these are the signs of a healthy relationship, these are the signs of an unhealthy relationship.'' – John. ‘You would go from feeling completely broken, I remember literally lying on my living room floor in the foetal position, clenching my heart and crying to then having these euphoric highs.' – Emmi ‘There were times when I would make advances and times when I would fall back. I would even tell myself, like, Oh, another relapse! However, there was that very clear moment for me and it was the one where I was lying on my floor heaving, crying, but I stopped because I all of a sudden got this clear message that said ‘you are keeping yourself here.'' – Emmi ‘Even just giving myself that three weeks to totally focus on my own stuff and not constantly spend every minute of my day worrying about what that other person was doing or what was going on with us. Bringing the focus back to me for that allotted period of time was tremendous.' – Emmi   GUEST RESOURCES Links: www.emmifortin.com Relationship Cheat Sheet [free download] www.emmifortin.com/whoihelp Book  book.whoisyourreddress.com/author  6 Things You Can Do NOW to Get Over Your Ex [freedownload] www.emmifortin.com Breakup Support & Connection Group www.emmifortin.com/about  VALUABLE RESOURCES Link to my workshop -   https://www.johnkennycoaching.com/5- things-you-need-to-create-a-healthy-loving-relationship/ To get in touch - email – john@johnkennycoaching.com  or book a complimentary call – https://calendly.com/johnkennycoaching/30min If people want to order a copy of the book then they can just pay postage of £4.95 (RRP £8.99) - www.johnkennycoaching.com/podcast-book-offer Want to be able to address the relationship issues in your life? - Why not book in for a complimentary call and we can discuss how you can get the new started with some new types of relationships - https://calendly.com/johnkennycoaching/30min The Relationship Guy Podcast - https://omny.fm/shows/the-relationship-guy         ABOUT THE HOST  I am John Kenny, Award Winning Relationship Coach.Coaching people to experience healthy loving relationships. We often tell ourselves and others that our relationship with our partner is far stronger than it really is, but as John discusses in this first show of the year, it might be time for a reality check. KEY TAKEAWAYS As we move through a relationship, we tend to accumulate more and more in the way of emotional anchors, such as children or financial arrangements. These can act as a block when it comes to motivating ourselves to leave an unhappy relationship. Often, when we are unhappy, we lose ourselves in other tasks such as work or physical activities. This is known as an avoidance tactic. When we look for external reasons to rationalise or justify our situation, we end up bypassing the root cause of the problems. Projection is something that is often used to shield us from difficult feelings that may overwhelm us. This causes us to remain in a denial space where we are simply trying to convince ourselves to remain. BEST MOMENTS 'People stick together even though they are unhappy' 'We go into what is known as an ego defence' 'These strategies help us to minimise our emotions' 'Denial is a great avoidance strategy' VALUABLE RESOURCES Want to be able to create healthy relationships in your life - why not book in for a complimentary call and we can discuss how you can get the new started with some new types of relationships - https://calendly.com/johnkennycoaching/30min The Relationship Guy Podcast - https://omny.fm/shows/the-relationship-guy ABOUT THE HOST I am John Kenny, The Relationship Guy - Coaching people to experience healthy loving relationships. This week, John discusses curiosity, and how cultivating it can lead to more fulfilment when it comes to relationships, and a more fulfilling life. KEY TAKEAWAYS Humans are built to be curious. This is how we have managed to evolve since the dawn of time, and what drives us as children to learn about the world around us. When curiosity is piqued, our brains release dopamine, triggering our rewards system, and encouraging us to dig deeper into the pursuit at hand. Curious people are more open to new social experiences, and are more willing to embrace uncertainty. This makes them far more adept in social situations. Through becoming more curious about our potential partners, we strengthen our connection to them. When building new relationships, try to be less afraid of uncertainty. BEST MOMENTS 'Curiosity can override anxiety, boredom and can deepen social connection' 'Curiosity has given us the capacity and desire to learn about our lives' 'Our brains actually reward us for exploring' 'By taking a more inquisitive to our lives and relationships, we may even be able to overcome social anxiety' VALUABLE RESOURCES The Relationship Guy Podcast - https://omny.fm/shows/the-relationship-guy ABOUT THE HOST I am John Kenny, The Relationship Guy - Coaching people to experience healthy loving relationships. This week, John is joined by emotional abuse therapist and author Elizabeth Goddard, the founder of The Divorce Sanctuary. Elizabeth joins John to talk about the effects of relationship deterioration, including the sometimes unexpected loneliness that occurs in its aftermath. Elizabeth also discusses where abuse can begin, how we can identify the red flag traits in a partner, and how we can learn to move past the effects of a relationship breakdown. KEY TAKEAWAYS Often, the person presented at the beginning of a relationship can be very different to the reality of a person. It's a painful and conflicting revelation to come to terms with. Abusive behaviour in relationships can imprint upon impressionable minds. If children are taught that abuse is normal, then there is good chance that this will be carried on in their own lives. Narcissists feed upon their partners both emotionally and financially. They suck their partner dry, and when there is nothing left to give, they move on. Narcissists and sociopaths are by their nature, not good at taking responsibility for their behaviours, and so do not feel the innate desire to seek help to overcome their condition. This can make therapy and treatment almost impossible. BEST MOMENTS 'If we've grown up in an environment that's been abusive, then we will see that behaviour as normal' 'They tune in to where your wounds are and then they use it to hurt you' 'They play with people and it's a great game for them. They want to see how powerful they are' 'It's important to remember that their condition comes from a place of pain' VALUABLE RESOURCES The Relationship Guy Podcast - https://omny.fm/shows/the-relationship-guy For more information about Elizabeth Goddard: https://www.thedivorcesanctuary.com https://www.thedivorcesanctuary.com/healingonadeeplevel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCMYt8qcisYTqjDLLj56HfSA ABOUT THE HOST I am John Kenny, The Relationship Guy - Coaching people to experience healthy loving relationships. This week, John discusses love itself - how it manifests itself, why it's so important, how love has evolved across generations, and why it is the driving force behind so much of what takes place in the world. KEY TAKEAWAYS Love is generally divided into two categories - being in love, and the simple act of loving somebody. Both are valuable, but very different. Love has evolved as society has evolved. Whereas once all attraction was built upon the desire to procreate, societal trends and shifts have led to a broadening of what love can mean and the forms it can take. Relationships and sexuality are drastically different, depending on our geographical location, and the societal acceptance of the communities surrounding us. Many believe that love is the source of all things. To some, love is our essential nature - a true representation of who humans are at their very core. BEST MOMENTS 'Love is a very complex emotion' 'The story of love is an ever-evolving drama' 'The roles of relationships have evolved drastically' 'It is the force that creates worlds' VALUABLE RESOURCES The Relationship Guy Podcast - https://omny.fm/shows/the-relationship-guy ABOUT THE HOST I am John Kenny, The Relationship Guy - Coaching people to experience healthy loving relationships. KEY TAKEAWAYS Relationships and intimacy are not taught in any kind of curriculum, and yet they make up a huge part of our lives. Guidance in these areas is crucial sometimes. The first step is recognising your contribution to a relationship. Only then can we identify the things we need from another. Human beings are complicated machines and unique in so many ways. This time, learn more about your host, John Kenny - what fascinates him about relationships, the personal experiences that led him to become "The Relationship Guy", coaching people, and the impact that relationships can have upon every area of life. KEY TAKEAWAYS Relationships are the act of two complicated entities coming together and trying to find common ground. They can be difficult, but are worth working for. Our outlook upon relationships are formed from an early age. These nascent experiences in life shape the way we see ourselves and relationships in general. If we cannot accept ourselves, then the belief that anyone else can accept us is severely limited. We must accept ourselves if we wish to be accepted by others. BEST MOMENTS 'Relationships are complicated and complex, because they are the coming together of two complicated human beings' 'The security was missing - the certainty was missing - and therefore I learned to shut down my emotions' 'My acceptance of myself has been key to turning my life around' VALUABLE RESOURCES The Relationship Guy Podcast - https://omny.fm/shows/the-relationship-guy ABOUT THE HOST I am John Kenny, The Relationship Guy - Coaching people to experience healthy loving relationships. The P.E.O.P.L.E. Programme: How to Overcome Your Blocks to Success by John Kenny Johnkennycoaching.com We create our thoughts, we trigger our emotions, and this determines the ways in which we act and behave. How we react or respond leads to our outcomes, both positive and negative. We all see things in our own way and act accordingly based on our perceptions and the meaning we give to events that have happened and will happen in our lives. Most of us remain in the world of our subconscious, making choices and fulfilling needs based on the things that we learnt many years ago. The most important relationship that we ever have is the one we have with ourselves as it drives the direction of our lives. This book has been written to help you to understand what that relationship is. Do you know where your thoughts come from? Why you feel like you do sometimes? Why you have a compulsion to act in certain ways when you know you may want to act differently? What has been holding you back for all of these years from having the relationships that you want, from achieving in life when you know that you can? The P.E.O.P.L.E. Programme will not only help you to understand all of these things but will give you the tools to ensure you can overcome your blocks to success. Come on a journey with me: see how I managed to change my life. John Kenny was born in 1970 and grew up in Ilford, Essex until his early twenties. He didn't know what he wanted to do as a career until his early 30's as he competed as an athlete, to international standard until he was 25 and found himself at a bit of a loss. He became a firefighter in 2001, after working as a Personal Trainer, but realised that although he wanted to work in a profession that helped people, these were not the right ones for him. He then trained as a counsellor in 2004 and took his first step into the world of personal development. For well over a decade he has worked with thousands of clients, firstly qualifying as a counsellor and then as a coach and hypnotherapist. He founded Interpersonal Relationship Coaching in 2016 which is a fusion of his experiences, knowledge and what he has noticed works most effectively for his clients and creates sustainable change in their lives. He is known as The Relationship Guy. His first book - The P.E.O.P.L.E. Programme, tells the story of his life, how he learnt to see himself and relate to people based on his upbringing and subsequent life experiences. The second half of the book asks you the questions so that you can really understand yourself in the same way and allows you to overcome your blocks to living a successful life. John is also a professional speaker and runs his own personal development workshops to help people be the best versions of themselves and live their best lives.
