Relationship Better. In the book they analyze their own relationship to help untangle the common and frustrating barriers many individuals face on the road to a happy, loving, rewarding partnership. It took them many relationships, their own inner self journey, therapy, therapy school, and helping thousands of people with their relationships, to learn to have better ones ourselves. Vanessa woke up at 31, after ending an engagement and moving to Los Angeles. John thought he woke up at 35 after his divorce. But he didn't truly wake up until he was pushing 40.  In It's Not Me, It's You, and in this podcast, John and Vanessa dissect their own relationship to help readers figure out theirs: what their relationships were like in the past, what traumas they carried into the new relationship, and how they work on growing together to foster a healthy and long-term bond. John, Vanessa and Sara talk about relationships, their relationship, co-dependency, hyper independence, intimacy, showing up, fear of abandonment, sex and all things honest about themselves and how they view their work. Ashley Turner on the Power of Yoga, Mental Health Work, and Moving Through Trauma

I Heart My Life Show

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 4, 2023 47:24

Here at the I Heart My Life community, we believe mental health should be a priority. Your mental health is one of the few things in life that you can't ignore because the consequences of doing so are just too grave. You see, nothing matters more than your own personal joy and happiness. Not work, not money, nothing… And if anything, taking care of your mental wellbeing can help you grow in your professional life, even if you have to take a day to breathe every once in a while. Someone who knows this better than anyone else I know is the amazing Ashley Turner. Ashley is a longtime yoga meditation teacher and licensed psychotherapist. She's been in private clinical practice for over a decade, and during the time, Ashley has combined yoga, meditation, and breath work with classical mental health psychology to help her clients. Ashley now primarily teaches yoga and meditation professionals how to incorporate more psychological work and exercises into their services. She also works with mental health professionals and teaches them how to integrate yoga and breathwork into psychology.  Today, Ashley and I will be talking about a loooot of interesting subjects, such as the power of yoga and breathwork, moving through trauma, entrepreneurship, her fertility journey, and more. Are you ready? Because I know I am! All right, let's dive in.   In This Episode: [00:00] Introduction [00:35] Let's welcome Ashley in the show! [02:09] How Ashley discovered yoga and what led her to use it for mental health work [08:31] How Ashley healed her confidence wounds [18:43] How Ashley decided to move forward as an entrepreneur in the yoga space [24:07] Ashley shares the shadow work she had to do as she stepped into entrepreneurship [30:44] Let's talk about motherhood and Ashley's fertility journey [44:33] One final question for Ashley Quotes: “Your life is your curriculum. You don't have to study books. Just be in your life and do the best you can and you will be forced into soul lessons.” – Ashley Turner “I met a friend who was really into yoga and he introduced me to it and it started to change my life. And I don't think at the time I knew that I really was depressed and I had suffered these rejections that really dropped my self-esteem. I sort of had like this idyllic eighteen years and then as soon as I got to college, I really lost my sense of self and my confidence. And so then after college when I found yoga, it started to heal me from the inside out.” – Ashley Turner “Yoga really is a psychology. Yoga is a study of the soul, it's a study of how we optimize living this human life, this body, [and] how we master our minds and emotions.” – Ashley Turner “One of my teachers would always say the goal [of therapy] is to move from judgment to understanding. So how do I move from judging myself maybe for having that trigger to really understanding and having compassion for why that might be here?” – Ashley Turner “If you're just addressing the physical level and you're working to get fit and strong and flexible [through yoga], it will still have an effect on your mental health and your energetic capacity.” – Ashley Turner “The breath is the link between the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual bodies.” – Ashley Turner   Links & Resources: Ready to Uplevel Your Life? In this episode we speak with East-West Psychology chair Debashish Banerji to discuss the foundations of a new concentration in the EWP department titled Asian Contemplative and Transcultural Studies (ACTS). Debashish shares his vision of a postcolonial pedagogy in which to ground this discourse, and we discuss how this concentration can situate academic and creative approaches to posthuman world-making. He shares the importance of understanding Asian contemplative traditions in critical relationships to the forces of western globalization and neoliberal capitalism which overdetermine Asian cultures through unconscious structures such as orientalist essentialization, reduction, and projection. Debashish illustrates this idea by describing how a western understanding of Yoga asana within the holistic health and well-being culture industry has been largely appropriated, co-oped by capital, and deterritorialized from its historical roots in which Indian yogasana was initially a micro-political praxis of subjective freedom and self-making based on the goals of anti-colonialist struggles. We ask how the potentials and traces of previous cultural renaissances and revolutions can productively aid in an aspiration to build a new posthuman habitus while avoiding the dangers of being folded back into dependance upon regimes of capital. Debashish speaks of the importance of the arts in ACTS, and shares how the arts can provide affective experiences which can open one to new liminal languages and performative and experimental concepts which can aid in psycho-cosmological world-making. Debashish Banerji is the Haridas Chaudhuri Professor of Indian Philosophies and Cultures and the Doshi Professor of Asian Art at the California Institute of Integral Studies. He is also the Program Chair for the East-West Psychology department. Prior to CIIS, he served as Professor of Indian Studies and Dean of Academics at the University of Philosophical Research, Los Angeles. He has taught as adjunct faculty at the Pasadena City College, University of California, Los Angeles and University of California, Irvine. His interests lie in postmodern, postcolonial and cross-cultural approaches to Indian philosophy, psychology and culture. Banerji has curated close to fifteen exhibitions of Indian and Japanese art. He has authored and edited around ten books and art catalogs on major figures of "the Bengal Renaissance" such as the Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore, the artist Abanindranath Tagore and the spiritual thinker Sri Aurobindo; on Critical Posthumanism, Yoga Psychology and on a variety of creative and art-related projects. His most recent books are Integral Yoga Psychology: Metaphysics and Transformation as Taught by Sri Aurobindo (Lotus Press, 2020) and Meditations on the Isha Upanishad: Tracing the Philosophical Vision of Sri Aurobindo (Sri Aurobindo Samity and Maha Bodhi Publishers, 2019), and Seven Quartets of Becoming: A Transformative Yoga Psychology based on the Diaries of Sri Aurobindo (DK Printworld, 2012). I'm often asked, “What does a healthy relationship even look like?” Vanessa Bennett, LMFT, author, holistic psychotherapist, and codependency expert, joins me for a conversation that addresses that question. Plus, we discuss her new book, which she co-authored with her partner, John Kim (AKA: The Angry Therapist), “It's Not Me, It's You: Break the Blame Cycle. Relationship Better.”  The book covers the top ten issues couples struggle with and how they can work through them. We also discuss codependence versus interdependence, love languages, and more.  Vanessa's therapeutic approach integrates years of study and practice in Depth, Buddhist, and Yoga Psychology. She co-hosts the Cheaper Than Therapy Podcast, leads soul-based retreats and workshops, and creates and facilitates curriculum for non-profit and corporate events and conferences. Show Highlights Halt the blame: codependency is universal and systemic (10:05) Interdependence: what it is and its role in relationships (12:21) Taking away the shame around our codependent ways of relating (15:34) Love languages are like Cliff's Notes for our needs (23:01) Moving towards interdependence and healing unhealthy codependency (28:02) When you break the blame cycle and own your shit, shifts in your relationships will happen (33:48) Learn more about Vanessa: After over a decade of grinding in the New York City corporate world, Vanessa Bennett realized her work, her relationships, and honestly, her life felt…off. She didn't see it at first, but her path was finding her — and the journey she started to help herself ended up being her path to helping others. Cue the montage of her moving across the country, having a few breakdowns, heartbreaks, setbacks, taking hundreds of hours of training and workshops in yoga, yoga therapy, nutrition, somatic therapy, and reading lots and lots of books. Oh yeah, all while becoming a licensed therapist. It turns out that this passion paired well with her unique background in telling stories through marketing and corporate strategy, a longtime practice of meditation and yoga, and the fact that she's a New Yorker who cuts to the point.  Today, Vanessa lives in Los Angeles and puts all of this to work as an Author, Licensed Holistic Psychotherapist, clinical entrepreneur, and mental health content creator. Achieving optimal health goes well beyond how we treat our physical bodies. Of course, a good diet and movement are still crucial pillars of well-being, but just as vital is taking care of your emotional and mental health. It shows that we can't address one area of our health without impacting another—it's all connected.    My guest in this episode of The Brave Table, Ashley Turner, has built her life's work around this concept. Her curiosity about how we walk with aliveness and how the body facilitates this has been a source of lifelong fascination. Amarjit talks about understanding free will. He continues with how free will is an often-misunderstood concept as mental decisions are regularly confused for free will. Often you are subjected to conscious and unconscious impulses of the mind, body, and emotions. This means that many of your habit patterns are unconscious, making it more difficult to understand what is free will and what is not. However, Amarjit provides a method for evaluating your decisions and behavior to shed light on whether they are unconscious habit patterns or an expression of free will.   Podcast website https://www.thestoryofmepodcast.com/   Support the show with a donation. She will be joining us to discuss Yoga Psychology! "Bybs+thrive was actually born out my passion for mental wellness, holistic health, and de-stigmatizing mental health. I wanted to create a modern, inclusive space for individuals and couples so that they could feel safe, empowered, and ready to embark on the incredibly rewarding path towards re-connecting with their true, authentic selves and living their best lives. I truly care about my clients and am dedicated to providing an empathic and specialized counseling experience. I have over 14 years of clinical experience working with clients in a variety of settings and concerns, with particular attention to anxiety, depression, life transitions, self-esteem, and trauma. I have a holistic lens with which I view everything that I do and utilize a variety of mind-body-spirit techniques to help you be well. I am also a proud cancer survivor, and therefore have a deep understanding of how trauma changes your life and the ways you wish it wouldn't, and I can help you make the transition into healing. My specialty is Yoga Psychology. This is a unique process that focuses on integrating the psychological wisdoms of ancient yoga teachings with modern depth psychology principles for emotional, physical and spiritual health. I have seen profound healing occur through this approach. Keep in mind that while my yoga training informs my therapeutic approach, this does not mean that you have to do yoga when you work with me. That is your choice to make as we work together to develop your goals. Finally, I believe counseling is for everyone. Bybs+thrive is an inclusive practice and all are welcome to our space." Today's guest will take us on a wonderfully written story of her healing journey. Veronica Layunta Maurel, an Ayurvedic health consultant, yoga teacher, storyteller, and writer. Interestingly, she is a postgraduate researcher working on creative writing and medical science wanting to prove that fictional writing is a valid way of researching. And at the heart of it, Veronica tackles trauma—a topic that Alex has always wanted to share into people’s informative and explorative discourse. Veronica, always curious, found Ayurveda unexpectedly. She thought she didn't have any problems and just went out of curiosity. She was put on detox and immediately fell in love with the feeling and continued exploring from then on. But the Ayurvedic doctor told her: there's something fundamental that needs to change in you, otherwise, you'll fall ill. And she did, after two years! And this has led her back, and permanently, to the Ayurvedic lifestyle and practice. To Veronica, it's one of those things that you discover but you felt like it has always been there; it was like home. Her immense work on trauma took off from a similar starting point. It started with her awakening and search for healing from a severe head injury. Trauma, she found, was like a huge portal—to other past traumas, to the deepest levels of the self, and to everything that we need to work on. But Veronica presents a unique and fresh perspective on healing by re-authoring trauma, the experience, and identity. As the powerful storyteller that she is, Veronica took it as her mission to bring back the value of storytelling and its healing power. As long as we keep stuck in a particular story of trauma, there's no healing possible. But this dense conversation of two Ayurvedic coaches and healers also jumped on several other important topics of surrendering, grace, “doing the work” and the constant reminder of being patient This intimate conversation’s nugget of wisdom: When we explore ourselves, our possible or past traumas, just bring that sense of playfulness. Anything that you're going through can be a portal to who you really are, for healing for you and others. Even when we're stuck on the suffering, keep the gates open for that mystery. It's there waiting for you. Links mention in the podcast Veronica Layunta Maurel website Watch video of the podcast Support me on Patreon and receive great gifts! Limited Offer – Join Now Ayurvedic Cleanse And Bring One Friend For Free Podcast Highlights Ayurveda is a lifestyle and something deeper. It's not a checklist that you have to take and do. It wasn't about doing more things; it's about the journey and finding the gems and wisdom along the way. - Veronica Maurel When we think of trauma, we think of all the bad things. That happens. But trauma is much deeper. - Veronica Maurel Any experience you can have can lead to a loop inside you. The more you ignore it, the more it gets ahead. - Alexandra Kreis It's important to see that in everything that we do, the goal is not only on the "done" thing but on what happens in the deepest levels while you do it. - Veronica Maurel Find your own way. It's a bit of a cliche, but it's harder than it looks when you live in a world of expectations. After the accident, I modified the way I do things. I did have a choice but I adjusted my life as a profound act of love for myself. - Veronica Maurel We need stories so much. Because we lost the communal life of sitting by the campfire and hearing stories that makes our brain spin but activates our creativity. And feel alive. - Alexandra Kreis Guest BIO: Veronica Layunta-Maurel is a Yoga and Ayurveda Health Coach, Fiction and Yoga Philosophy Writer, and founder of Akasha Yoga Centre in the UK and Akasha Projects Ltd. worldwide. On today’s episode, we will be discussing parenting as a survivor of mental health, the impact that PMADs can have on our relationships, and the prolonged repair we have to engage in with our children and partners to maintain healthy attachment. We’re excited to welcome our guest, Jill Birt. Through study and practice, she has learned yoga is far more than a physical experience. Her study of yoga has deepened her understanding of the human mind, body and spirit and the immense resource of intelligence within.       Melissa Jay is a registered psychologist and yoga teacher who has melded her two loves into Yoga Psychology.  The hard work she puts into her psychology practice and yoga retreats are all done in purpose of her mission, which is "to empower compassionate souls to love themselves unconditionally".  When we take good care of ourselves and ensure that our cups are filled then we are better to be able to show up and be present with the people that we care about.  The result?  Deeper connection, true connection.  To live your best life you must practice self love and self care.  Part of that is to tune into your inner world, understand how you relate to others (because we relate to each other differently), realize what it is that you need and then ask for it and receive it.  The last part is where many people trip up.  There seems to be a resistance to receiving and it holds us back.  Plug in those earbuds and listen in because Melissa helps us understand four different ways we relate to each other, how to make use of that information (breaking beyond "what's wrong with me?") and gives a compelling case as to why it's important learn to receive what you need from others.   Read More
