You may have heard me mention IFS, or Internal Family Systems, in podcast episodes before. My guest today is going to go into much more detail, but briefly, IFS is a powerful and compassionate therapeutic framework for understanding the different “parts” within ourselves—like the inner critic, the protector, the people-pleaser. Through IFS, we can learn how to befriend and heal those parts so we can show up more fully as our true Self. I'm pretty fascinated by IFS and have seen how transformative it can be in helping people truly heal and find more peace in their lives. In my research, I came across a therapist who not only feels the same but has fully stepped into the intersection of IFS and neurodivergence. So of course, I had to invite them onto the show. In today's episode, you'll meet Jude Carn, a certified Level 3 Internal Family Systems (IFS) psychotherapist, international consultant, and passionate advocate for neurodiversity. Jude brings a powerful blend of lived experience and deep professional expertise to their work, and in this episode, we're exploring how IFS can be a transformative model for neurodivergent individuals and the families who support them. In our conversation, Jude walks us through the core concepts of IFS, explains how this framework can be especially healing for neurodivergent people—who often grow up feeling misunderstood, judged, or exiled—and shares insights on how IFS offers a respectful, empowering approach to trauma that allows each person to move at their own pace. Jude explains that recognizing and befriending one's own parts can lead to deeper self-acceptance and a better relationship with ourselves. IFS has been transformative for me, and it's really powerful to start from a place of knowing that you are not broken. Imagine what a difference it would make for all our neurodivergent kids to fundamentally know that they are not broken—and that no parts are bad. IFS can be a truly affirming starting point. I hope you get as excited about it as I do after this conversation.    About my guest Jude Carn is a level 3 certified IFS psychotherapist and approved consultant with the IFS Institute. Jude lives in the UK and works online internationally with some clients and mainly in supporting other therapists through supervision and consultation. Jude is a late diagnosed AuDHDer and an advocate for the recognition of neurodiversity as part of the human experience, rather than disorder.Jude creates and runs training, conference talks and groups supporting therapists to provide better support and care to their neurodivergent clients. She is genderqueer, and uses she/they pronouns. She co-hosts a podcast, Queering IFS which sets out other questions taken for granted norms around heteronormativity and neuronormativity as these present themselves in the world of therapy.Jude lives at home in rural Sussex with her two dogs and long term partner.   You'll learn: What IFS (Internal Family Systems) is and how it helps individuals foster deep self-acceptance through exploring inner parts Why every coping strategy has a purpose, often driven by protectors working to shield exiled parts that carry pain How recognizing and building relationships with internal parts can lead to profound healing and growth How IFS allows respectful trauma exploration at one's own pace Why neurodivergent individuals may especially benefit from IFS's flexible, creative, and affirming approach Ideas for how parents and therapists can help their children understand and connect with their parts   Resources: Jude's website, Anchored in Self Queering IFS Podcast Inneractive Cards Books for kids, teens, and adults about IFS No Bad Parts: Healing Trauma & Restoring Wholeness with the Internal Family Systems Model by Richard Schwart, PhD Learn more about your ad choices. I have a coaching session for you this week, and in these sessions, I aim to pick topics that are universal. Maggie is brave today and coming on the show with a topic many of us struggle with, resentment, self-abandonment, and the rocky road to self-compassion.  I wanted to give this topic a voice because it's incredibly common. To normalize what it looks like when women find themselves stuck in cycles of indecisiveness, resentment, guilt, and burnout. Maggie's story is specific, but the themes? They're everywhere. In this session, we unpack what's getting in the way for Maggie and work together to create small, actionable steps that bring her closer to showing up for herself in meaningful ways. Her willingness to do the work on herself offers something for all of us - especially if you've been taught to prioritize everyone but yourself. You'll hear us talk about:  What it really looks like to explore resentments and why it matters (10:53) How self-abandonment sneaks into everything from parenting to partnership (26:19) Why you don't have to forgive someone in order to heal (28:07) How indecisiveness connects to fear, self-trust, and early family dynamics (28:39) What self-compassion can look like in real time (especially when it's new) (36:41) Resources: Coaching Single Sessions with Andrea No Bad Parts: Healing Trauma and Restoring Wholeness with the Internal Family Systems Model, Richard Schwartz Book recommendations: I love a good personal development book, and you do too, right? Many of us hold the convenient belief that we possess a single identity. Dr. Richard Schwartz began challenging the flatness of that assumption in the early 1980s. His curiosity led to the creation of the Internal Family Systems Model (IFS), which recognizes the role of internal “parts” or subpersonalities that resemble a family structure.  Forty years later, Dick continues to expand on the model, exploring its capacity to resolve interpersonal conflicts, address broader societal issues, and reconnect us to our innate humanity. On this episode of Transforming Trauma, host Emily Ruth and Dr. Schwartz discuss how IFS helps clients reclaim their agency, restore inner harmony between their diverse parts, and strengthen their capacity to reveal their true self. About Dr. Richard Schwartz: Richard C. Schwartz, PhD, is the creator of Internal Family Systems, a highly effective, evidence-based therapeutic model that de-pathologizes the multi-part personality. His IFS Institute offers training for professionals and the general public. He is currently on the faculty of Harvard Medical School, and has published five books, including No Bad Parts: Healing Trauma and Restoring Wholeness with the Internal Family Systems Model. Given our political situation in the United States, you may be hearing a lot of people–myself included–talk about living your values. Not just professing them, but really living them, even when it's uncomfortable. It's hard work that requires a lot of internal fortitude. But we so often default to acting against our values in order to protect ourselves and those we love from real or perceived danger–to our jobs, our reputations, dignity, physical safety, and more. We try to protect ourselves with compliance, while our silence does real harm to others. Those who have a history of relational trauma are especially likely to fear speaking up, even as they know their values and moral expectations are being violated. This collision of relational trauma with moral injury reinforces beliefs that the world is unsafe and that people in power cannot be trusted. My guest today is a survivor of abuse and cultish communities. Have you ever felt like different parts of yourself were competing for attention and power? Maybe you have aspects of your personality that you're proud of, and others that you'd rather keep hidden from the world—the ones that tend to rear their heads in your not-so-shining moments. According to Internal Family Systems Therapy, a framework developed by today's guest, Dr. Richard Schwartz, we are all made up of sub-personalities or “parts.” IFS posits that by investigating and understanding where each of those parts come from and how they are dictating our current behavior, we can better understand our unique mental world and determine how to make change to support our healing and improve our relationships. Dr. Alexandra talks with Dr. Dick about how IFS has the potential to help individuals understand themselves, strengthen their romantic relationships, or even navigate the dating world. They also explore a question from a listener in Toronto who wants to feel more deeply understood in conversations with her boyfriend. IFS is a theoretical framework that has helped many folks, but as always, Dr. Alexandra encourages you to see what resonates with you in this conversation and what might be helpful to bring into your own processes of self-discovery and healing, and to your relationships. Relevant Links:IFS Institute: ifs-institute.comIntimacy From The Inside Out: https://ifs-institute.com/store/116No Bad Parts: Healing Trauma and Restoring Wholeness with the Internal Family Systems Model by Richard Schwartz, Ph.D.: https://bookshop.org/p/books/no-bad-parts-healing-trauma-and-restoring-wholeness-with-the-internal-family-systems-model-richard-schwartz/16396062?ean=9781683646686You Are the One You've Been Waiting for: Applying Internal Family Systems to Intimate Relationships by Richard Schwartz, Ph.D.: https://bookshop.org/p/books/you-are-the-one-you-ve-been-waiting-for-applying-internal-family-systems-to-intimate-relationships-richard-schwartz/18790456?ean=9781683643623Story on IFS from NPR's Morning Edition: https://www.npr.org/sections/shots-health-news/2024/10/25/nx-s1-5055753/parts-work-therapy-internal-family-systems-anxiety#:~:text=At%20the%20center%20of%20IFS,his%20book%20No%20Bad%20Parts. As complex beings, we all encompass many different inner parts, or aspects of ourselves. Often, these parts may conflict, or we may feel ashamed or angered by those parts that we consider “bad” and therefore, try to suppress them. However, each of our parts serves a particular function that is meant to help us in some way, and by understanding where they all might have come from, how they work together, and how to foster healing and harmony among our various parts when needed, we can create space for our true, core selves to shine through.  Dr. Richard Schwartz, our guest in Episode 207 of The Mindset Game® podcast, is the creator of Internal Family Systems (IFS), a widely used, evidence-based form of psychotherapy that is particularly effective for dealing with trauma. It provides a non-pathologizing, optimistic, and empowering perspective and a practical set of techniques for working with individuals, couples, families, corporations, and classrooms. After beginning his career as a family therapist, Dr. Schwartz now serves on the faculty of Harvard Medical School, and has published five books, including “No Bad Parts: Healing Trauma and Restoring Wholeness with the Internal Family Systems Model.” In this week's episode, Dr. Schwartz shares the following: The 8 Cs of “Self” or Self-leadership — calm, confident, curious, compassionate, courageous, creative, clear, and connected — which represent who we truly are at our core when we allow the other parts of ourselves to step aside and create space How understanding the different parts of ourselves can help us become more effective leaders, particularly for those who may have developed an over-attachment to the inner parts that have fueled their success A framework to better understand the different parts of yourself – including the critics, protectors, managers, and inner children – and why they may behave in certain ways Dr. Schwartz then guides us through an exercise designed to help us get in touch with those parts of ourselves that serve as protectors.  To learn more about Dr. Schwartz and Internal Family Systems (IFS), visit https://ifs-institute.com.  To learn more about The Mindset Game podcast, visit www.TheMindsetGame.com. There is a common belief and drive that we have good and bad in us. That we are at war with our flesh. We mean well but we fall to this darkness inside of us. I'm a spiritual guy who has placed faith in Jesus. Just my personal decision. I have decided to put faith in the existence of good and evil. But here I'm going to step outside and look at this more scientifically. In the previous episode I talked with Dr Richard Schwartz about the message in his new book, No Bad Parts: Healing Trauma and Restoring Wholeness with the Internal Family Systems Model. He claims we don't have a mono-mind, one mind, we have multiples. And they all have a valuable role. They aren't inherently bad. The opportunity is to understand them, and use them for productive reasons, instead of viewing them as faulty and fighting or falling to them. If you feel you are often fighting with and falling to the bad parts of yourself, you may find great value here. Got a comment or question about an episode? Want to ask a question about your drive? In this episode I have a paradigm shift that will alter your drive. We are all raised in the mono-mind belief system, the idea that we have one mind, and from this one mind we have an infinite amount of differing thoughts and emotions and impulses and urges. That we often feel are competing against each other. We think of our good selves and our bad selves. Our healthy and unhealthy aspects. And we get frustrated and feel guilty that our one mind seems so schizophrenic. My guest today has a very different theory and perspective. From his research he believes we have a multiple personality, and all the parts are doing what they are supposed to. If we understand this, we can use them in harmony to help us be our best selves. Richard C. Schwartz, is an American systemic family therapist, academic, author, and creator of the Internal Family Systems branch of therapy. He developed his foundational work with IFS in the 1980s after noticing that his clients were made up of many different pieces or "parts" of their "Self.” Dick is currently on the faculty of Harvard Medical School, and his latest of five books is called, No Bad Parts: Healing Trauma and Restoring Wholeness with the Internal Family Systems Model. The forward is by renowned music artist, Alanis Morissette who credits Dick's work with IFS as revolutionizing her own therapy and life perspective and even bringing her to her core spirituality. Famed physician Gabor Maté and psychologist Bessel Van Der Kolk attest to IFS as one of the most innovative and transformational therapies to have emerged in the present century. I sat down with Dick to dig into Internal Family Systems and the message in his new book, No Bad Parts, to uncover how changing our paradigm on the different parts of our minds can significantly alter what drives us for the better. Episode 119. In today's solo episode, I'm going to share some of what I've learned about IFS and how it works based on both my personal and professional experiences thus far. I'm also going to talk about learning to slow down, how it's a journey I'm still on, and how IFS helps me actually do it, specifically focusing on my example of my Overworking Part, which I learned as I talked through this episode is very linked with my "Optimizing my Experience" Part (also described in my episode with Randi Rubenstein). In this episode I share my process of recognizing my Overworking/Optimizing Parts, appreciating them, and helping to do things (like record this episode for you!) from a more embodied and grounded place. In the middle of the episode, I lead you through an IFS based meditation to get to know a Protector Part of yours, Overworking Part or otherwise. Then I cover 3 of the main lessons I've learned from experiencing IFS. Without further ado, let's dive in! But First, Words of Wisdom “Compassion as a spontaneous aspect of Self blew my mind, because I'd always assumed and learned that compassion was something you had to develop. There's this idea—especially in some spiritual circles—that you have to build up the muscle of compassion over time, because it's not inherent. Again, that's the negative view on human nature at play. To be clear, what I mean by compassion is the ability to be in Self with somebody when they're really hurting and feel for them, but not be overwhelmed by their pain. You can only do that if you've done it within yourself. That is, if you can be with your own exiles without blending and being overwhelmed by them and instead show them compassion and help them, then you can do the same for someone in pain who's sitting across from you.”― Richard C. Schwartz, No Bad Parts: Healing Trauma and Restoring Wholeness with the Internal Family Systems Model The Top 3 Lessons I Have Learned Through Experiencing IFS Cognitive Self-Compassion is Very Different Than Heart Self Compassion. It's totally different. And I was definitely always practicing the cognitive type. This really came to light for me when I talked with Dr. Allyn Richards in episode 108 (you can listen here). We both experienced compassion for ourselves by practicing IFS in a way that was totally different than anything we've tried to do in the past. You Have to Life it to Give It. Hearing this always felt annoying to me. But also so true. I always heard that you shouldn't teach meditation if you don't have a meditation practice. Well, I occasionally taught it, but I definitely didn't have a practice. Talking About Parts is Very Different than Talking to and Building a Relationship with Parts. One of my trainers in my Level 1 mentioned that she often sees therapists saying they are doing IFS, when really they are talking about parts with clients, which can be helpful. Many of us, therapists especially, have developing amazing conceptualization and analyzing parts that helped us a TON. And also, they are still parts. When you truly build a relationship with and honor these parts, new levels of healing and embodiment open up, likely that you didn't believe were truly possible. Have you ever felt divided inside yourself? Perhaps there's part of you who really wants to do something and part of you who doesn't. Or part of you that feels sad regarding an ending and part of you that is relieved. Maybe there's a part of you that still longs for a certain dream or a part of you that still carries the burden of a criticism you received a long time ago. We often described our complex feelings using this language... "Part of me feels (fill in the blank)." In this episode we're going to address our many different parts, and how this concept can help us to more fully understand our emotions and triggers they might bring. Most importantly of all, is the invitation we all have to love these different parts of who we are. Even those parts that annoy us or that we would rather reject. We're going to learn how to talk to those parts with love and understanding so we can move into wholeness instead of staying divided in fractal parts inside. SHOWNOTES:Use code ONEHEART30 to get 30 days free on the Co Create App and gain access to the guided meditations and Q&A that accompanies this Reclamation of Feeling course. No Bad Parts: Healing Trauma & Restoring Wholeness with The Internal Family Systems Model by Richard Schwartz

Watch the YouTube version of this episode HEREAre you a lawyer who is struggling with keeping your head above water? In this podcast episode, Jim and Tyson interview Maria Parker, a training and development consultant specializing in trauma-informed practice. Maria shares her journey from mental health nursing to psychotherapy, her work with legal professionals, and her approach to addressing mental health issues. There is no doubt that legal professionals deal with stress, trauma and burnout. It is a part of the job that some handle well and others don't at all. Lawyers work with people who are going through tough times and deal with situations that are not light in nature, Maria talks about the psychotherapy approach she brings to addressing this aspect of the job. Many lawyers deal with trauma and the profession is the perfect way to get away from it. Working a job that is always busy and on the go allows for your brain cognitively to leave your body or leave that trauma and focus on other people's needs. Lawyers are always thinking about the client, the case, prepping for the trial and the list goes on. It is the perfect way to not think about anything that is upsetting you personally.Maria talks about the importance of having a safe space for people to talk about their trauma and stressors. A lot of people will not tell anyone about their troubles because they may feel that person will judge them or misunderstand them. Once there is a safe space, whether that be in a friend's home or therapist's office, people feel validated in their thoughts and experiences. From this point, things can really change for someone who is going through a hard time. There is an issue with just diagnosing someone and prescribing medication so they can deal with the pain and go on with life. Maria believes it is crucial to get the diagnosis and acknowledge it, but then parking it and getting to what is underneath. This means getting to the root of the trauma and working backwards to know what has led someone to where they are now.Tyson, Jim and Maria talk about how common anxiety is among lawyers. Because of the stressful nature of the legal field, many lawyers struggle with anxiety and all that comes with it. There is a struggle to say yes to everything because of the competition that exists within firms. Many lawyers don't get much rest because they are up at all hours working on cases or researching for their trials. There is also an emotionless nature that comes with law where lawyers have to be serious and stone cold to remain professional, which really adds to someone feeling anxious. Listen in to learn more from Maria Parker!1:57 Maria shares the gap she saw in addressing stress and trauma in the legal profession11:11 The significance of creating a safe space for individuals in therapy20:43 The increasing prevalence of anxiety among lawyers23:15 How anxiety serves as a protective mechanismJim's Hack: Check out the book “Going Infinite: The Rise and Fall of a New Tycoon”, by Michael Lewis. Treating our kids fairly makes a lot of instinctive sense. It's natural to want everybody to get equal everything. But different kids have different needs. When they all get the same attention and resources, they'll often wind up with very different outcomes. Effective pack leadership requires an equity approach. We need to see our children as the whole, unique, special humans they are, and to show up for each of them in the ways that serve their individual needs best. Masterminder Lauren joins me to talk about the leadership approach she uses to build family trust and a sense of equity that are so much stronger than simplistic ideas of fairness. In this episode, you'll learn:Why a one-size-fits-all approach to our kids' needs is the opposite of fair. The central role humility plays in establishing trust, both professionally and with your family. S7e1: Dr. Richard Schwartz – IFS & the Unburdening of Self

Dr. Richard (Dick) Schwartz, founder of the Internal Family Systems (IFS) model, kicks off our new season 7. While Dick is not a graduate of the Hoffman Process, we asked him to be on the podcast because his life's work of IFS aligns beautifully with the work of the Process.** IFS was born in the 1980s when Dick began to work with clients in his therapy practice. Dick shares his story of how he came to see and work with the family system we each have within us. His discoveries about the inner landscape of human beings have helped thousands of people heal. You will hear Dick talk about parts and burdens. Parts are sub-personalities that, combined with the Self, make up who we are. Burdens consist of "extreme beliefs and emotions accumulated during intense experiences," particularly in childhood. When parts are ready to release these burdens, hence the term unburdening, "they transform into their naturally valuable states." This is akin to what happens in the Cycle of Transformation during the Hoffman Process. While developing IFS, Dick realized that at the heart of each person is the Self. He discovered that the Self is not a part like he was used to working with. The Self is the core Self of a human being. Eventually, the Self appears as the IFS work deepens. This is when healing truly begins to take place. Dick and Drew reference the Self, parts, the eight 'C's, exiles, protectors, and firefighters. Find out more about these terms in the As mentioned in this episode section below. **While the vast majority of our guests are Process graduates, we occasionally host experts in other modalities of healing that align with the work of the Process. Discover more about Dick Schwartz : Richard (Dick) Schwartz began his career as a family therapist and an academic at the University of Illinois at Chicago. While there, he discovered that family therapy alone did not achieve full symptom relief, and in asking patients why, he learned that they were plagued by what they called “parts.” His patients became his teachers as they described how their parts formed networks of inner relationships that resembled the families he had been working with. Dick also found that as they focused on and, thereby, separated from their parts, they would shift into a state characterized by qualities like curiosity, calm, confidence, and compassion. He called that inner essence the Self and was amazed to find it even in severely diagnosed and traumatized patients. From these explorations, the Internal Family Systems (IFS) model was born in the early 1980s. IFS is now evidence-based and has become a widely used form of psychotherapy, particularly with trauma. It provides a non-pathologizing, optimistic, and empowering perspective and a practical and effective set of techniques for working with individuals, couples, families, and more recently, corporations and classrooms. Currently on the faculty of Harvard Medical School, Dick has published five books, including No Bad Parts: Healing Trauma and Restoring Wholeness with the Internal Family Systems Model. Dick lives with his wife Jeanne near Chicago, close to his three daughters and his growing number of grandchildren. This is the belief that, in addition to these parts, everyone is at their core a Self, containing many crucial leadership qualities such as perspective, confidence, compassion, and acceptance." There are different parts of ourselves that come up to the surface…that come up, that show up when we are being attacked or when we feel like we need to protect. And, it's only because there are certain parts of ourselves that's triggered. – Dr. Neeta Bhushan   Hey there, Brave Table fam! In today's episode, we're diving deep into a topic that's crucial to our relational success. We'll be exploring the concept of gaslighting - what it is, how to spot it in ourselves and those around us, and how it can affect our relationships. I'll be sharing some powerful techniques to help you navigate those tough conversations and challenging emotions that we all face from time to time.   In this episode, I talk about… Breaking down empathy, recognizing when others are denying experiences & minimizing feelings. Shifting blame, creating conflict & their impact on communication. Knowing your emotional Type & reacting in tough moments   It's so important to remember to acknowledge and validate the emotions of others, and equally vital to practice self-awareness and self-compassion in our own lives. Remember, our greatest teachers are the relationships we have with ourselves and others. As we navigate this journey towards recognizing and addressing gaslighting dynamics, let's find the beauty and healing in embracing our emotions.   Recommended Book:  No Bad Parts: Healing Trauma and Restoring Wholeness with the Internal Family Systems Model by Richard C. In this episode, you'll learn: How self-criticism can short-circuit the learning process, and hold us back from the change we know we want. Check that episode out first if you haven't already because I give a general overview of IFS. This episode is all about some of the many ways IFS has impacted me personally, and some of the ways it's impacted me professionally and helped me think about our field in a more useful way. So excited to have you here! What to Expect in This Episode In this episode I will answer: How IFS has influenced me personally How it has changed how I think about the fields of weight management and eating disorders What I wish more professionals knew about healing people from disordered eating and weight-related concerns My top recommendations for people looking to learn more about IFS and how it relates to eating and weight concerns Are a therapist, dietitian or helping professional who works individuals struggling with disordered eating? Are you unsure of the best ways to help clients who say "I really like intuitive eating and what we are doing, but ultimately I really want to lose weight." You empathize. You tell them the science about dieting. But ultimately, that desire for weight loss keeps coming up and often interfering with their focus in treatment. How can you help them explore what is right for them without imposing you own agenda? I created this free step-by-step guide to walk you thought my #1 favorite exercise (based on Internal Family Systems theory) to help clients navigate this nuanced dynamic with parts of them that still want to lose weight. Power Quotes From The Show Meet A Part Of Yourself "Any single thing I don't like about my day, or an interaction, or a direction that my life is going in, for me is an opportunity to meet a part of myself." - Kelly Brogan MD Judgment + Choice = Discernment "Judgment + choice = discernment. When you recognize that you don't like something, you're judging it. And when you can see that you have choices, you're actually taking responsibility for what you control. Then you can exercise discernment which is basically: "Does this work for me or does it not work for me?" It helps us to smoke out where it is that we're power-overing and it's never more relevant than in the area of parenting."- Kelly Brogan MD Get Real With Yourself "I have had an opportunity to recognize where I am sourcing something that's not available and semi-insisting that it should be and that can lead to ruptures where both parties are seeing that something is not working here. That is the opportunity for me to get real with myself and to say with a sober mind, sober heart, and sober eyes: 'What are my choices here? Can I interact with this painful process without needing the individuals that I'm in dynamic with to be bad and wrong? What if they're not bad and wrong?' And yet I still get to choose to exit and express my needs. I get to choose to make requests. I have all sorts of choices and I would never be aware of those choices if my energy was focused on being right and on how wronged I've been." - Kelly Brogan MD Links From Today's Show  Kelly Brogan, MD Sovereignty Series - 20% off with code "JOSH20" Own Your Self: The Surprising Path beyond Depression, Anxiety, and Fatigue to Reclaiming Your Authenticity, Vitality, and Freedom by Kelly Brogan, MD Karpman Drama Triangle 535 Aaron Abke: The Law of ONE + How To Live In Love's Alignment Wild Wild Country Graham Hancock Sovereignty Seres American Circumcision Tom Cowan Om Rupani The Surrendered Wife: A Practical Guide To Finding Intimacy, Passion and Peace by Laura Doyle The Way of the Superior Man: A Spiritual Guide to Mastering the Challenges of Women, Work, and Sexual Desire by David Deida Dr. Stan Tatkin 463 JP Sears | This Is How Media HIJACKS Your Mind: Stop Censoring Yourself & Heal The Tyrant Within Daily Mail: Disney executive who is the mother of a transgender and a pansexual child wants at least half of ALL future characters to be LGBTQIA or racial minorities Mike Dillard Jordan Peterson Aubrey Marcus No Bad Parts: Healing Trauma and Restoring Wholeness with the Internal Family Systems Model by Dick Schwartz Parts Work: An Illustrated Guide to Your Inner Life by Tom Holmes Existential Kink: Unmask Your Shadow and Embrace Your Power by Carolyn Elliott Shop the Wellness Force Media Store breathwork.io MANNA Vitality - Save 20% with the code "JOSH20" Mendi.io - Save 20% with the code "JOSH20" HIGHER DOSE INFRARED MAT, RED LIGHT FACE MASK, SAUNA BLANKET - Get 15% off with the code “JOSH15“ (link + code must be used together for discount) Cured Nutrition CBD - Save 20% with the CODE "WELLNESSFORCE" PLUNGE – Save $150 with the code “WELLNESSFORCE" LiftMode - Save 10% with the code "JOSH10" Organifi – Special 20% off to our listeners with the code ‘WELLNESSFORCE' HVMN - Get 20% off your Ketone IQ order with the code "JOSH" MitoZen – Save 10% with the code “WELLNESSFORCE” NOOTOPIA - Save 10% with the code "JOSH10" ActivationProducts – Save 20% with the code “WELLNESSFORCE” NEUVANA - Save 15% with the code “WELLNESSFORCE” SENSATE - Save $25 on your order with the code "JOSH25" DRY FARM WINES - Get an extra bottle of Pure Natural Wine with your order for just 1¢ CHILISLEEP - Save 25% on Josh's favorite ChiliSleep products with the code "JOSH" ION - Save 15% off sitewide with the code ‘JOSH1KS' TOUPS - Save 15% with the code "JOSH" Feel Free from Botanic Tonics – Save $40 when you use the code ‘WELLNESS40′ Drink LMNT – Zero Sugar Hydration: Get your free LMNT Sample Pack, with any purchase BREATHE - Save 20% by using the code “PODCAST20” Essential Oil Wizardry: Save 10% with the code ‘WELLNESSFORCE' MY GREEN MATTRESS - Save up to $125 on your order with the code "JOSH" NEUROHACKER - Save 15% with the code "WELLNESSFORCE" ALIVE WATER - Save 33% on your first order with the code "JOSH33" M21 Wellness Guide Wellness + Wisdom Community Leave Wellness + Wisdom a review on Apple Podcasts Dr. Kelly Brogan Facebook Instagram Twitter YouTube About Kelly Brogan MD Dr. Kelly Brogan is a holistic psychiatrist, author of the NY Times Bestselling book, A Mind of Your Own, Own Your Self, the children's book, A Time For Rain, and co-editor of the landmark textbook, Integrative Therapies for Depression. So grab your favorite beverage of choice and join us for an honest conversation about the fields of weight management, eating disorders, and health. Our goal in this 2-part series is to have these episodes be relevant for: People (whether you are an individual looking for an empowering healthcare team) who want to be inspired and motivated to create optimal health and thrive Clinicians who work with people on their health, eating, and/or weight who want to have a full range of options and strategies to help their clients thrive and feel empowered and excited about their health journey What to Expect in This Interview In this interview, we cover: What most people truly want in a provider (e.g., therapist, dietitian, other helping profession) What people don't want, but as providers we are often pulled to do How the concept of psychological flexibility can be so crucial for providers Why working on yourself and your own therapist or provider parts is always needed to continue to guide and empower your clients and patients in the most effective way How the framework of Self-Determination Theory helps us understand what truly works to motivate and empower others Some common client/patient presentations that can elicit anxiety in providers (ranging from weight gain as a response to intuitive eating to the opposite, having a client wanting to lose weight when their provider is recommending a non-diet approach) How to adopt a non-shaming growth mindset versus a fixed mindset when it comes to all things weight, health, eating, and helping others Also! If you are a therapist, dietitian or helping professional looking to learn more about the best ways to support and empower your clients... Sapna and I are planning some super cool workshops and learning community opportunities just for you! Next workshop is on Friday April 21st from 12:00pm to 1:00pm. Sign up today using this link! The reality is that it's a very nuanced process to meet humans where they're at. I think our goal is reducing shame from all sides and also knowing it's super normal to judge people who aren't super aligned with you but if we keep doing that, it's just not helpful."- Shawn Hondorp, PhD Support Local Bookstores Near You! Episode 90. This conversation is a looooong time coming! I'd like you to imagine this conversation is happening with Sapna and I at a little coffee shop in Philadelphia that was near Drexel University where we both went for grad school. Our goal in this 2-part series is to have these episodes be relevant for: People (whether you are an individual looking for an empowering healthcare team) who want to be inspired and motivated to create optimal health and thrive Clinicians who work with people on their health, eating, and/or weight who want to have a full range of options and strategies to help their clients thrive and feel empowered and excited about their health journey What to Expect in This Interview In this interview, we cover: Our biases and why we are so passionate about this work Some of our experiences of the polarization in the health field (e.g., weight inclusive approaches, intuitive eating, versus weight management, etc.) The ways this polarization or rigidity can harm individuals and the field at large Some questions you can ask yourself to help determine which clinicians are the best fit for you and whether or not you may need new team members and/or different support along your journey Also! If you are a therapist, dietitian or helping professional looking to learn more about the best ways to support and empower your clients... "Ultimately people just want to be seen and heard and so when a client comes in and they are struggling with whatever, an eating disorder, they've gained weight over time, they want to work on weight loss, it's just like yes come talk to me I'm here to listen, I want to understand your experience and a lot of times when people come in saying they want to lose weight, if you dig deeper there's a lot underneath that."- Sapna Doshi, PhD Support Local Bookstores Near You! Listen & Subscribe on: iTunes / Stitcher / Podbean / Overcast / Spotify Contact Info Website: www.heathershannon.co/ Most Influential Person Eckhart Tolle Effect on Emotions I will be really honest, this is still a work in progress for me. I noticed that I'm a lot kinder to myself about certain emotions. And then I also noticed that there are other emotions where I can beat myself up still. Then I'm just noticing the judgment that's still there. And like, okay, like, this is still here. This is something that, I can still work on, but then it's almost like not judging myself for the judgment. So can be a few layers there. Thoughts on Breathing That's a good one. Because I do think breath can help us a lot with sex. Oftentimes, in bed or not, we can kind of tense up and almost be holding our breath. And a lot of people tend to do that leading to orgasm, especially if you're somebody who maybe struggles with orgasm. Try deep breathing, try relaxing your muscles a little bit, and just see how the energy flows with that. Sex and Consciousness But with me, I've done all sorts of different breathing. I've done some, like Holotropic breathwork workshops that I've attended. I've gone through periods where I do the Wim Hof YouTube video in the morning. Dr. Andrew Weil has the 4-7-8 breathing technique for relaxation. Sex I noticed when I'm stressed, my breathing is more shallow and tense. And it's like a clue to me, like a signal that I can relax a little more. Suggested Resources Book: No Bad Parts: Healing Trauma and Restoring Wholeness with the Internal Family Systems Model Dr. Andrew Weil The 4-7-8 Breathing Technique App: Dipsea Stories  App: Quinn Bullying Story I've seen this more than once, where one partner is kind of pestering, coercing or manipulating their partner to have sex with them. Now that you're kind of bringing mindfulness to it. I actually think that's a huge component because one of the main reasons I got into sex therapy is because I think the way the culture is, there's a lot of shame and stigma around certain aspects of sexuality. Sex and Consciousness It could actually think male, bisexuality is one of those. I think there's a lot of men who have interest in some other men, but you know, are kind of told like, No, you're either gay or straight. There's no woman who can be bisexual. So I think that when there's an area of shame or stigma, or when someone's feeling hurt, and rejected, and maybe doesn't have the capacity, or the training or the skill set to be with that because I think mindfulness is a lot of that is being with whatever your experience is, they kind of gets more emotionally reactive. Sex and Consciousness And I think that's where sexual bullying can come in. So I think if people are able to develop the capacity to accept themselves, to not judge their own sexuality, to not take their partner's maybe lack of interest personally, and you just see that, like, that's what's going on in their mind, you know, looking away that has nothing to do with you. And to process any hurt that you have without judging it. I think that's huge. So I feel like when you do that, it really frees you up to have great sexual communication, which is, you know, another topic on my early podcast. Because it's key, it's like, if you can communicate well about sex, you're gonna probably have a pretty good sex life.
