Did you ever think that overeating, specifically, could send your soul to Hell? Or that not losing enough weight, fast enough, could jeopardize your salvation? These are just some of the many terrible (and bizarre) messages that very skinny self-proclaimed "prophetess" Gwen Shamblin Lara preached before she died in a plane crash in 2021. Sadly, the cultish church she built, lives on. And this week, we explore (and mock) its weirdly weight-centric teachings.Watch the Suck on YouTube: https://youtu.be/-3dKEiruxB4Merch and more: www.badmagicproductions.com Timesuck Discord! https://discord.gg/tqzH89vWant to join the Cult of the Curious Private Facebook Group? This week we start a two parter about The Weigh Down Diet and the Remnant Fellowship. For Gwen Shamblin things looked real bad and without guidnace she chartered down a dark and abusive path. Remember your health is not tied to your weight no matter what some cultists may tell you. And your weight certainly has nothing to do with god. Be safe out there and look forward to part two next week. Subscribe today for access to our full catalog of bonus episodes, including 2+ new episodes every month! www.patreon.com/boysbiblestudy It's been about two years since the bizarre death of Gwen Shamblin Lara and her husband Joe Lara in a private plane crash in June 2021, but media coverage of the two charismatic Christians is only just now coming to a climax with the release of dueling films profiling the pair. HBO has a new documentary, but we focus on Lifetime's GWEN SHAMBLIN: STARVING FOR SALVATION, which stars Jennifer Grey (DIRTY DANCING, FERRIS BUELER'S DAY OFF) in the lead role as Gwen, covering her life's journey from housewife to cult leader. We at Boys' Bible Study previously covered Gwen ourselves back in 2021, learning about her extensive and specific theories on how you can replace gluttonous urges with prayer. Her most famous theory is that one must wait for “The Growl”, a stomach growl which sometimes requires fasting as long as 36 hours at a time to truly experience. STARVING FOR SALVATION doesn't get too deeply into the content of Gwen's teachings, but the film is impressively researched and entertaining as it recreates the harrowing atmosphere of a southern belle cult leader who exerts total control over the dogma (and diets) of her congregation. Watch as Gwen and Joe go shopping for a private plane to add to their tacky, opulent estate — the same plane that would later come crashing down in a Tennessee lake, bringing an abrupt end to Gwen's reign over Remnant Fellowship. The Church lives on, and has even issued a harsh press statement denouncing Lifetime's biopic, but they should be grateful! GWEN SHAMBLIN: STARVING FOR SALVATION is not a flattering portrait, but we think Gwen would enjoy seeing her legacy live on in such an entertaining and, dare we say, “iconic” way. This week, Ash proves that the 'ol saying "the higher the hair, the closer to God" might not be so true.Gwen Shamblin, subject of HBO's The Way Down, was a tiny woman with huge hair full of secrets. She started as a weight loss guru with her Christian diet program, The Weigh Down Workshop and skyrocketed to success with her book The Weigh Down Diet. Both focus on "praying the pounds away”! As Gwen gained more power and her hair grew taller, she started to get that God complex thing going on, and of course, stuff gets abusive and MAGA weird (easter egg!).-Join us for as little as $5 a month on Patreon!-We'd love to see you in our Discord, come hang out. Black leading ladies of Lifetime come first, ‘periodt.' But Megan and Naomi could not pass up the opportunity to gossip about an outlandish mega-church leader! This week we take a quick break from our Black History Month celebration to cover “Gwen Shamblin: Starving for Salvation.” The irresistible Gwen Shamblin rose to power as head of the Southern megachurch Remnant Fellowship and Weigh Down Workshop. As the church grew, so did her grip as its iron-fisted leader, hoarding money, power, and influence. Despite a carefully curated image - including hair teased to record heights, the church is scrutinized for its controversial practices. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Gwen Shamblin is a petite southern belle with a pompadour, a Christian diet program, and a crush on Jesus. She calls herself a prophet and from her pulpit in Tennessee, she preaches militant obedience… with dire consequences. Special thanks to Helen Byrd, a former member of Remnant Fellowship church, for speaking with us for this episode. You can watch the Lifetime original movie Gwen Shamblin: Starving for Salvation on February 4th at 8/7c or stream it on mylifetime.com Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
In this episode, the Woman Beings sit down with Megan Cox, a cult survivor and former member of Remnant Fellowship. Megan first shared her story on the HBO Max docuseries, The Way Down: God, Greed, and the Cult of Gwen Shamblin, and decided to start The Beyond Zion Foundation, a cult recovery organization that provides support for ex-cult members and their loved ones. When Megan was young, her mom introduced her to Gwen Shamblin and her Weigh Down Workshop diet seminar. Gwen taught that God wanted them to be thin and helped Megan and her mom lose weight by cutting their food intake. Megan's life became steadily more controlled as Gwen, who also started the Remnant Fellowship, demanded absolute obedience to herself and the group. Megan stayed under the control of her mother, the diet workshop, Gwen and the Remnant Fellowship until she was a young adult. Now a mother herself, she soon realized that the control also extended to her baby, and she left -- under much distress. In this episode, Megan discusses her life and how she regained her own autonomy. Join us as we also chat with Megan about weight loss as one of the many ways destructive groups can assert control over their members.
Keto. Intermittent Fasting. Paleo. Juice Fasts. They all claim to be the best for weight loss, but is this true? There is an overwhelming amount of information out there trying to convince you to lose weight. While there are a myriad of ways to lose weight, losing weight too quickly or in super restrictive ways won't work in the long term. In this episode, Illa and TMN Coach Courtney discuss a number of things that the dieting industry gets wrong about long term weight loss. They also discuss a recent Variety article about disordered eating tied to Gwen Shamblin Lara of the Weigh Down Workshop, where Shamblin Lara equated weight gain with sin in her Christian-based Remnant Fellowship. When people preach that there is just one way, they are often trying to sell you something. Different methods work for different people, the key is finding a way that will work for you in the long term. Losing a large amount of weight quickly may seem like a win but it's actually a loss. When you severely restrict your calories, you lose weight quickly but your body becomes malnourished. This puts your body at a higher risk of developing diseases since you don't have the nutrition to protect yourself. Don't take things to the extreme. More is not always the answer. A little protein is good, but don't go overboard and eat a ton of protein. Walking 10,000 steps a day is good, but don't go overboard and do 30,000 steps. Incorporate habits that are sustainable in the long term. Hi! I'm Illa (MS, RDN) and I am a Registered Dietitian who provides weight loss coaching for millennials. There are so many health companies and fad diets out there that want to convince you to buy their products, but I'm here to show you that you don't need any products to lose weight! It just takes a little behavior change and food tracking. At Remnant Fellowship, Gwen Shamblin Lara taught members to be completely obedient to their husbands and church leaders, and that their children should also be completely obedient to them. We are kicking off year 2 with a suckerpunch! What started as an amusing case of ever-rising hair took a turn for the dark side as we explored Gwen Shamblin, her Weigh Down program, and the Remnant Fellowship. TW: SA, ED, Child Abuse, Cults
Our second mini series covers dietician turned cult leader, Gwen Shamblin Lara, the woman who started the “Weigh Down Diet” and then created a hypnotic following at her self-made church, Remnant Fellowship. Remnant Fellowship faced accusations of being a cult that promoted child abuse and praying one's way to being thin. But there is so much more to this bizarre story than just what meets the eye. In this episode, Jennie Winter, one of my private coaching clients, speaks candidly about her 10 year experience in what many call a weight-loss cult. HBO Max made a docuseries about the group in 2021 called, The Way Down: God, Greed and the Cult of Gwen Shamblin. The Weigh Down was founded in the controversial Remnant Fellowship, a weight-loss based Christian church in Tennessee. In this interview, you will hear Jennie talk about her experience of being terrified to eat ANYTHING for fear of going to hell. Yes, you heard that right: for fear of going to hell, and also for fear of losing her husband AND her children if she didn't get thin. She explains why in the interview. She talks about how she was encouraged to starve herself until she did lose all the weight they thought she should lose. In addition, Jennie share how she finally broke away from the movement after 10 years, learned about The Law of Attraction, found me and other resources, and the new journey she's on which includes loving her body, celebrating her food and yes, releasing pounds without stress, anxiety and shame. Natasha Pavlovich from The Way Down, a documentary miniseries which follows Gwen Shamblin Lara, the founder of a diet program Weigh Down Workshop, and The Remnant Fellowship, a new Christian group led by Shamblin Lara. After rising to fame with her Weigh Down Workshop, a Christian-based diet program that preached slenderness as next to godliness, Gwen Shamblin Lara founded the Tennessee-based church. Despite a carefully curated image, Lara and the church soon fielded accusations of emotional, psychological, and physical abuse, and exploitation for their alleged cult-like practices. The concluding two episodes of this documentary series examine the mysterious accident that claims the lives of Gwen and some of her inner circle. New voices come forward for the first time. Natasha Pavlovich was one person Shamblin could not control. She is the mother of a daughter she shared with Joe Lara. She discusses her experience with Gwen and Joe, and the aftermath of their deaths. Gwen Shamblin nousi 90-luvulla suureen suosioon, kun hänen kristillinen dieettiohjelmansa, Weight Down Workshop alkoi trendata erityisesti yhdysvaltalaisissa kirkoissa.
This week Marc and Cassie finish up their coverage of The Remnant Fellowship Church and discuss the subjugation of women within the church and the plane crash which took the lives of some of the church's most prominent members. Although the atrocities of the church are horrific, we do get some comedic relief in the form of Favorite Follower Helen's much appreciated sass. Ask questions or submit case suggestions here. At last! After premiering three episodes of investigative documentary series The Way Down on HBO Max last year, the exposé of the Remnant Fellowship and its founder, Gwen Shamblin, returns for a two-part update. Has it gained anything in the aftermath of the series' revelations? Did we need another two episodes about the church and the ways in which it preyed on the vulnerable? Probably not! But then, we also didn't really need Netflix's 4-episode Bad Vegan or Hulu's 3-episode Captive Audience (to varying degrees). But Kasey and Mark watched all three series, and they have some Thoughts about this trio of shows retelling real-life bad behavior. In the early 1980s Gwen Shamblin formulated a religious weight loss program called The Weigh Down Workshop. Within five years, her program had taken off and eventually Gwen opened her own church known as The Remnant Fellowship. However, it wasn't long before Gwen developed a belief that she was God's prophet and she quickly began abusing her power. If you're familiar with ‘The Way Down', the HBO Docuseries that chronicles the rise and fall of conservative Christian diet guru Gwen Shamblin (Lara), who died in a plane crash in May of 2021, you may remember today's guest: Gina Wilson. As a devoted member of the Remnant Fellowship, the Brentwood Tennessee church founded by the big-haired, charismatic Shamblin, Gina spent over a decade inside the group as a part of the music ministry team and as a poster child of sorts for the church's ‘Weigh Down' diet method and weight loss empire. Gina joins us to talk in-depth about her experience in the church, the collateral damage to her family unit, and how she ultimately escaped Shamblin's clutches. She also shares how her faith has only deepened now that she's free from the Remnant Fellowship, and how she's coming back from years of spiritual abuse. One of the pillars of the Remnant Fellowship Church is submission. Submission to God, a wife's submission to her husband, and a child's submission to their parents. If children aren't submissive and obedient and quiet, the Remnant Fellowship recommends corporal punishment. At the church's advice, Sonya and Joseph Smith put their 8-year-old son, Josef, through a series of atrocious punishments. In 2003, Josef finally succumbed to his brutal injuries. Ex-members of the cult suggest that the group's leaders should be held responsible for their negligent advice. Instead the group persists, and continues to perpetuate a toxic cycle of abuse. The cult leader whose HAIR became a visual of her ego - as her church grew, so did her hair! Gwen Shamblin Lara created the Christian diet plan called, the Weigh Down Workshop, eventually growing (ahem like her hair) into its own religion and church known as Remnant Fellowship. Despite Gwen's unshakeable devotion, everything she built soon came crashing down in unexpected circumstances. Who is more likely to join this cult?? April or Caroline?? Previously on Deadtime Storiez...... Stephanie told us about the Unification Church (aka The Moonies). But what she was saving for this episode was the completely insane sect that branched off from the Moonies: the World Peace and Unification Sanctuary Church - also known as - the Rod of Iron Ministries. And that is because they not only worship God in their church, but also...the AR-15 assault rifle. This church has bullet crowns, gun blessing ceremonies, and openly encourage you to bring your personal AR-15 to service.....I mean, what could be more 'Merican than that? Sarah follows up this cult-filled episode with the leader of the Remnant Fellowship church: Gwen Shamblin Lara. The woman who personifies "the higher the hair, the closer to God", Gwen started her journey as a dietician creating the "Weigh Down Workshop", a faith-based weightloss program (because that won't turn unhealthy fast...) Check out the recently released HBO Documentary "The Way Down: God, Greed, and the Cult of Gwen Shamblin". Both of these cult leaders are quite the personalities, both in what they preach and in their outward appearance. We'll be posting pictures of both on all out social media accounts. *We know that the USA is the "land of the free", and was built on the freedom of religion. The three-part docuseries covers Shamblin's rise in career that led her to start Remnant Fellowship, a controversial church in Brentwood, Tennessee. The church and its tight-knit community are known for their weight-loss workshops, peppy attitudes, and elaborate events, but the series reveals a dark underbelly of abuse and exploitation. This week is part two of Megan's incredible story of her experience with The Weigh Down and Remnant Fellowship. Listen in as she continues her story of how she got involved, what she experienced and why she left.
What a Creep: Gwen Shamblin Lara Season 13, Episode 4 The Founder of Remnant Fellowship Church “HBOMax The Way Down” Gwen Henley Shamblin Lara was the founder of a popular Christina diet program called “The Weigh Down” whose followers were instructed to use God as their guide to lose weight and overcome eating issues. This led her to start her own ministry called the Remnant Fellowship which along with her best-selling books and popular online programs and festivals made her a wealthy woman. For years, she dodged rumors that she ran a cult and took advantage of her followers. On May 29, 2021, she died in a plane crash along with her second husband for Tarzan in Manhattan actor Joe Lara, her son-in-law Brandon Hannah, and several members of her church on their way to a MAGA rally. HBO Max produced three episodes for a series called The Way Down (two more are due next year) which exposed many of the more unsavory aspects of her life. Today we talk about the mysterious leader with the incredible head of hair and what is happening with her ministry today. Trigger Warnings: Church cults, eating disorders, and child abuse. Right after brunch on May 29th of this year (2021), evangelical cult leader Gwen Shamblin Lara and her recent husband Tarzan actor Joe Lara, along with six others, plunged their Cessna C501 into Percy Priest Lake near Nashville, Tennessee. Shamblin created a Christian diet plan called the Weigh Down, that became its own religious cult called the Remnant Fellowship, that emphasized body shaming as a tool to keep people, specifically women, obedient and exhausted. When her plane dove into the lake just after take off, was it an accident? Was is it foul play? Faked death maybe? Or maybe, like Johnny Cash says, "Sooner or later, the Man'll cut ya down." In this episode, we discuss the final chapters of The Way Down. These episodes cover the impact on the lives and families of the cult surrounding the Remnant Fellowship and diet guru Gwen Shamblin Lara. Many former members detail the extent to which the cult controlled their behavior and actions, and their struggle to get free of its grip. Check out this article for some good coverage of the issues around leaving a cult. Quick recap of the series: The author of the bestselling diet book The Weigh Down, Gwen Shamblin, appeared on the national TV talk shows and sold her weight loss philosophy to people across America. Especially churchgoers. By 1999, she had essentially started her own Tennessee church (or cult depending on your point of view). Her background as a nutritionist brought some actual common sense to the diet, but when she put herself forward as a prophet who equated devotion to diet as devotion to God she stepped into dangerous and manipulative territory. Who has watched "The Way Down" docuseries on HBO?? It's about a “church” [cough-cult] in Nashville called the Remnant Fellowship. The community was created by Gwen Shamblin, author of The Weigh Down Diet. As you might imagine, the intersection of diet culture and evangelicalism is toxic to say the least. If you have watched it, and you have feelings, you are not alone and we got you! This is our mini series called, "The Weigh Down Take Down." In Part 1: Holy But Hungry, we recap the first episode of HBO'S docuseries.
The show starts off with David talking about his appearance on The SoBros Network Podcast. It will be released on Friday and he thinks you should listen to it! John talks about the death of his pet cat, who unfortunately passed away. The two talk about how terrible it is when you lose a pet. The guys discuss Trump dropping off The Forbe's List, Shatner going into Space, and then David talks about The Way Down Documentary for an extended period of time. It follows Gwen Shamblin Lara, the founder of a diet program Weigh Down Workshop, and The Remnant Fellowship. The two then list their Mt. Rushmore of Scary Movies in honor of Halloween being around the corner. The guys list the movies that terrified them and should be watched by everyone.
There's a fad diet. There's Christianity used as a weapon. There's a murder conviction. And there's big hair. Really big hair. That's just three episodes of HBO Max's new documentary series The Way Down, about Gwen Shamblin, her Christian diet The Weigh Down, and the church she founded, the Remnant Fellowship. And somehow, Kasey Howe and Mark Peikert don't think three episodes is enough! Join them as they discuss the brand-new show, it's shocking revelations, and just why Gwen's ethos is so singularly Southern. If you follow Christian culture, you've probably seen her name in the news this month - on May 29, 2021, she was aboard a private jet that crashed in a Tennessee lake, killing Gwen, her husband (actor Joe Lara), and 5 other high ranking leaders of her church. Many news outlets, tabloids, and documenters of contemporary Christian culture have covered her bizarre career and untimely demise - but we at Boys' Bible Study, being media critics, choose to do so through her decades of video work. She's released countless self-help VHS tapes and youtube videos as a part of her Christian weight loss ministry Weigh Down. She also releases streaming TV show episodes that seem to double as Remnant church services. We also cover her wedding and engagement videos, which are so larger-than-life they qualify as video art. In our discussion, we conclude that Remnant Fellowship is more than just using God to justify an eating disorder - it's also a full-blown cult of aesthetics.
