If nations are to meet their sustainable energy goals, experts argue that batteries will be a crucial part of the equation. Not only are batteries key for many technologies, they'll also be necessary to meet energy demands with a power grid that is mainly supplied by renewable energy sources like wind and solar. Without batteries, power from those sources can't be stored for use when the sun isn't shining or the wind isn't blowing.Right now, many technologies depend on lithium-ion batteries. While they certainly work well and have revolutionized mobile devices and electric vehicles, there are drawbacks. First, the lithium, cobalt, and nickel they require can only be found in some countries, and there have been accusations of unethical mining practices, including child labor. The mining and production processes also emit a large amount of CO2, and the batteries themselves can explode and cause fires, although these incidents are becoming less common.A promising, greener solution to our battery needs could be something called a solid-state battery. Lithium-ion batteries conduct electricity through a liquid electrolyte solution, while solid-state batteries do so with solid materials, such as ceramic, glass, and sulfides. This means they have lower risk of fires, charge faster, have higher voltages, and can be recycled. However, their development has taken longer than expected, due to cost, production hurdles, and lack of large-scale, real-world testing.Earlier this month, teams at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering and the University of California San Diego published a paper in Nature Energy demonstrating the world's first anode-free, sodium-based, solid-state battery architecture, which can charge quickly and last for several hundred cycles. Its main ingredient, sodium, is much more abundant than lithium, cobalt, and nickel, which could mean more affordable and environmentally friendly batteries in the future.Ira Flatow sits down with Dr. Y. Shirley Meng, a professor at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering and chief scientist for energy storage science at Argonne National Laboratory, to talk about the advancement, and when we could expect to see these unique batteries in our devices.Transcript for this segment will be available after the show airs on sciencefriday.com. In this episode, Dr. Geoff Oxnard, a thoracic oncologist, discusses his career journey into oncology and shares insights from his experience treating lung cancer patients and conducting research. He emphasizes the increasing role of precision medicine and genomic and biomarker testing in guiding treatment decisions, providing examples of how identifying specific mutations can lead to dramatically better outcomes with targeted therapies. Dr. Oxnard also highlights the changing narrative surrounding lung cancer, with emerging stories of remarkable responses and newfound optimism as treatments improve. He provides perspective on navigating clinical trials, especially for rare genomic subtypes, and shares his motivations for transitioning from academia to the pharmaceutical industry, driven by a desire to have a larger impact on drug development and patient care. Key Highlights: 1. The increasing role of precision medicine and genomic testing in guiding lung cancer treatment decisions. 2. The changing narrative and renewed optimism surrounding lung cancer, as treatments improve and stories of remarkable responses emerge. 3. Dr. Oxnard's transition from academia to the pharmaceutical industry, driven by a desire to have a larger impact on drug development and patient care. About our guest: Geoff Oxnard, M.D., is the Vice President, Clinical Development, Global Head, Thoracic Cancer at Loxo@Lilly. Previously, Dr. Oxnard served as a thoracic oncologist and clinical-translational researcher at Dana Farber Cancer Institute and was also an Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Oxnard received his BA in chemistry from Harvard University and his MD from the University of Chicago-Pritzker School of Medicine. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and completed his fellowship in medical oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. As an experienced oncologist, Dr. Oxnard is passionate about raising awareness of thoracic cancer and helping to make an impact on cancer care. Key Moment: 8 minutes: “It starts with precision therapy, if I may, right? Once you have defined a specific molecular subtype, you've tried to sort of sift through the randomness of cancer care to find a group of patients who are going to behave in a similar way. Let's go into that for a moment, if I may, OK? EGFR mutations. If you give an EGFR inhibitor in the original studies to a bunch of patients on average with lung cancer, they live a couple months longer, but 10 % of those patients have fantastical responses that can last for a year or two or more. And so when you are a lung cancer patient, which are you looking for, by the way, to live on average two months longer or to have a fantastical response that can work for years? And of course, people are looking to be that outlier.” Visit the Manta Cares website Disclaimer: This podcast is for general informational purposes only and does not constitute the practice of medicine, nursing or other professional health care services, including the giving of medical advice, and no doctor/patient relationship is formed. [04:09] Metabolic Flexibility and Macronutrients Carbohydrates and fats are two of the four major fuels for the body and are often referred to as macronutrients. Many people struggle to process and burn carbs and fats efficiently, frequently favoring one fuel source over another. Metabolic inflexibility refers to the body's inability to process both carbs and fats effectively, whereas metabolic flexibility refers to the body's ability to burn both carbs and fats efficiently. The Met Flex Diet is a six-week program that teaches the body how to effectively burn both fuels by exposing it to carbs and fats and incorporating keto and carb-loading elements. According to scientific evidence, cyclical keto cycling (alternating between periods of ketosis and carbohydrate consumption) can help improve metabolic flexibility. [08:07] Intermittent Fasting: Achieving Metabolic Flexibility Intermittent fasting helps to shift the body into fat-burning mode. Fasting depletes the body of energy from food and glycogen, allowing it to use stored fat as an energy source. By depleting energy from food and glycogen, intermittent fasting attempts to use stored fat as an energy source. A simple approach for beginners or those new to fasting is to wait a few hours after waking up before eating the day's first meal. Sleeping is a form of fasting because no food is consumed during that time. Extending the fasting period after waking up allows for more fat-burning time. [15:04] How do Fasted Cardio Workouts Enhance Fat Burning Fasted cardio involves working out on an empty stomach, usually without eating before the workout and for about an hour afterwards. Fasted cardio may not be appropriate for everyone, so pay attention to your body's signals and adjust accordingly. With depleted stored glucose (glycogen) and no food energy available during a fast, the body relies on fats for energy during the workout. The energy demand during exercise is significantly increased, prompting the body to draw even more energy from fat stores to meet the increased energy requirements. [18:51] Balancing Sleep and Workouts for Fat Loss Sleep is necessary for metabolic flexibility, hormonal rhythms, and body restoration. For optimal health and weight management, it is critical to maintain good sleep hygiene and prioritize adequate sleep. Morning workouts are appealing because they provide the benefits of endorphin release and fewer distractions. However, if morning workouts interfere with your sleep, consider switching to an afternoon workout or finding alternative times that work best for your schedule. Eating a high-calorie meal before bedtime causes excess calories stored as fat. Avoiding late-night eating allows the body to draw energy from fat stores while sleeping. The body is more likely to use fat as an energy source overnight if there is a gap between eating and sleeping. [23:09] Metabolic Boosters: Protein and B12 Consumption Increased protein consumption can boost metabolism due to the increased work required by the body to digest protein. Although lean protein is preferred, plant-based proteins such as beans and legumes are also beneficial. Protein from natural food sources is more bioavailable than protein supplements, ensuring that the body can use a higher percentage of the protein. The difficulty of breaking down protein signals the body to increase metabolic activity. Adequate B12 levels promote optimal metabolism and health. Prioritizing natural, protein-rich foods and getting enough B12 can improve metabolic function and help you lose weight. [33:17] Focusing on Food-Based Nutrition The desire to obtain nutrients through food stems from the belief that natural nutrients are more bioavailable and safer for the body than synthetic products. Natural nutrients in their natural state contain additional beneficial compounds and a more complete nutrient package than whole foods. While some supplementation may be required, caution should be exercised due to the market's proclivity for over-supplementation. Before beginning any supplementation regimen, individuals should thoroughly read and comprehend product labels. AND MUCH MORE! According to the CDC, over 60 million women (44%) in the United States are living with some form of heart disease. This is from the American Heart Assoc: more than one in three women is living with some form of cardiovascular disease. Heart disease and stroke cause 1 in 3 deaths among women each year – more than all cancers combined. According to the British Heart Association: after menopause your cholesterol levels can go up, increasing your risk of heart attack and stroke. Your body cannot control sugar levels (glucose) as well – this can increase your risk of diabetes, high blood pressure, and weight gain, which we know as metabolic syndrome.Women have historically been studied less regarding heart disease risk, although that is changing with some very impressive women cardiologists. As women move through the menopause transition, it has been shown that as estrogen levels decline, a woman's CVD risk may increase. Estrogen is heart protective and more is being done to educate and screen women to see if they are good candidates for MHT. But, still, so many women remain confused, and overwhelmed, by the barrage of information on the internet, the misinformation, or lack of information, provided by their doctors, and their current fear-based understanding of taking MHT and getting breast cancer. In this episode, we discuss standard lipid panels versus comprehensive lipid panels, including ApoB, Lp(a), the Cholesterol Balance Test, particle size and numbers, and what are optimal lab results. We also take a deep dive into my recent advanced lipid labs so you can see what it looks like and learn how to read the results. We talk about cholesterol, dietary and synthesized, as well as, saturated fats and their effects on lipids. Watch on my YouTube Channel for the most beneficial experience. We start to talk about genetics- stay tuned for Part 2! And, we talk about additional tests and treatments, including pharmaceuticals and natural options. It's February 2024, which is National Heart Disease Month and I have a very special guest joining me who will bring you some clarity on the topic of assessing your risk of heart disease as you transition through menopause and beyond.Dr. Michael H. Davidson is board-certified in internal medicine, cardiology, and clinical lipidology. He's a Professor of Medicine, Director of the Lipid Clinic at The University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, and serves as the Chief Executive Officer of New Amsterdam Pharma. As a legal nurse consultant, when you go through medical records, you may see indications that an ethics consult was called or that ethical issues were considered. You may also find yourself struggling with aspects of the decisions made regarding the patient and feel the need of advice from an expert in medical ethics. Camille Renella opens the door to this little-understood aspect of medicine. She begins by pointing out that ethics has lower regard than the law in terms of application simply because legal violations generate so many more repercussions. At an earlier time, doctors and administrative personnel didn't even want to deal with issues like setting up ethics committees in their institutions. Today no formal qualifications exist for sitting on such a committee. In contrast, medical ethicists receive formal, usually post-doctoral, education in their field. They look at those who are working around the patient and consider the standard of care and code of ethics of each group of practitioners and how their application of these values can benefit the patient. The need for a clinical medical ethicist particularly arises in continuation of life issues. This can involve conflicts between family members and clinical staff, issues around advanced directives, and other considerations. Camille raises important ethical and practical issues in this informative podcast. It will broaden your perspective about what is involved in medical decisions. Join me in this episode of Ethical Dilemmas in Healthcare: Insights from a Medical Ethicist with Camille Renella What does a medical ethicist do? Dr. Baiju Gandhi, Consultation-Liaison Psychiatrist and IWP student, discussed "Developing Deradicalization Programs for US Domestic Extremism" on March 30, 2023 at The Institute of World Politics. This lecture is part of IWP's Student Speaker Lecture Series. About the Lecture: In recent years, the United States homeland has seen an increased threat from domestic terrorism and extremism. Addressing this unique threat requires utilizing new tools to supplement law enforcement. Deradicalization programs may be one of these tools. Such programs' goals are to disengage radicalized or radicalizing individuals from acting violently and slowly pull that individual's mindset toward a less extreme state. While these programs have been in place in Europe for many years, development in the United States is in its infancy. In this lecture, we will review psychological theories of radicalization and deradicalization, describe existing deradicalization programs in Europe, and address suggestions for development of deradicalization programs in the United States. About the Speaker: Dr. Baiju Gandhi is a physician with a specialization in general psychiatry and sub-specialization in the psychiatric care of the medically ill. He graduated from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine and Harris School of Public Policy in 2009 with a joint M.D.-M.A. in public policy. His interests include the intersection of behavioral science and national security. He is currently a student at IWP (Institute of World Politics), pursuing a graduate certificate in non-violent conflict. ***Learn more about IWP graduate programs: https://www.iwp.edu/academic-programs/ ***Make a gift to IWP: https://interland3.donorperfect.net/weblink/WebLink.aspx?name=E231090&id=18

“I am going to be who I am. Unapologetically.” Dr. Ian Smith made a conscious decision long ago that he didn't mind being the odd man out, doing his own thing, not following tradition, even while becoming a doctor. He says his philosophy has served him well—he's always comfortable with who he is. But he's had to deal with uncomfortable situations. He shares with Jeanne how he bounced back from his biggest career setback, what he learned from his beloved grandfather that still rings true today, why a support system is key to survival, how cutting across the grain feeds your passions, how being an identical twin shaped his life, and why your job title isn't your identity.About Dr. Ian:Dr. Ian Smith is the author of the 21 books including #1 New York Times bestsellers, Shred: The Revolutionary Diet, and Super Shred: The Big Results Diet, and Blast the Sugar Out. All About UVM's Larner School of Medicine [Show Summary] The University of Vermont's Larner School of Medicine's new Associate Dean for Admissions, Leila Amiri, shares the hallmarks of the program, including its active learning curriculum and mission centered around respect, kindness, and cultural humility. Interview with Dr. Leila Amiri, Associate Dean for Admissions at UVM Larner School of Medicine [Show Notes] Welcome to the 494th episode of Admissions Straight Talk. Thanks for joining me. Are you ready to apply to your dream medical schools? Are you competitive at your target programs? Accepted's medical school admissions quiz can give you a quick reality check. Just go to accepted.com/medquiz and complete the quiz, and you'll not only get an assessment but also tips on how to improve your chances of acceptance. Plus, it's all free. Dr. Leila Amiri, UVM Larner's new, as of June 2022, Associate Dean for Admissions, comes to Larner from the University of Illinois College of Medicine, where she was Associate Dean for Admissions and Recruitment. Previously, she was Director of Admissions and Financial Aid for the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. She holds a Ph.D. from North Central University and an MA and BS degree from the University of South Florida. Amiri is a member of the Association of American Colleges Advancing Holistic Review and Alignment Working Group, National Chair of the AAMC BA/MD Affiliate Group and National Chair for the Committee on AAMC Professional Development Initiative. Dr. Amiri was also a guest last year in her previous role, and it's a pleasure to have her back on Admissions Straight Talk. Can you give us an overview of UVM Larner's College of Medicine's program focusing on its more distinctive elements? [2:12] I'll be happy to. At Larner College of Medicine, we have a big history of training medical students. We're actually celebrating our bicentennial, so the class that's meeting for 2023 will be the 200th class that we've seated. We've come a long way in terms of the educational model. We're most known for our active learning model. Students are really at the center of our learning model and its active, student-centered learning all based on educational pedagogy and adult learning principles. There's a lot of community engagement with our students here and at our clinical sites which are in Vermont and in Connecticut. What does active learning mean in practical terms? [3:11] When you look at educational philosophy and pedagogy, adult learners need to really be invested in what they're learning. Not only do they need to be invested in what they're learning, but they also have to find meaning and value in it. They have to be at the center of constructing the information. There's very little lecturing that happens here for our students. There's time that they spend on their own before they come to class. Think of a flipped classroom model. They spend a lot of time on their own looking at basic information and then when they join us in the classroom setting, there's a lot of group activity, engaging with their peers, and working through problems. It's not completely problem-based learning, but there's problem-based learning, case-based learning, and team-based learning. We have all of these different models where students are not sitting there just as recipients of information, but really they're constructing the information with each other as they're going through the different phases of their learning. They're getting cases, they're getting problems, and they're working in teams. When you think about the way these things look, they become progressively more complex and progressively more sophisticated in terms of the case that they're engaging with. For example, they might not receive all of the information that they need, which is typical in a clinical setting. They will get a patient scenario and there'll be some gaps in that knowledge.
