According to UNHCR, the global number of people forcibly displaced by conflict, violence, human rights abuses, and other forms of persecution has reached 110 million. When asked to imagine the living conditions of refugees and internally displaced people (IDPs), rows of white tents or temporary structures often come to mind. In fact, around 60% of refugees and IDPs live in towns and cities. This episode of Make Change Happen is hosted by Lucy Earle, director of IIED's Human Settlements research group, and features Nassim Majidi, co-founder and executive director of Samuel Hall; Jack Makau, associate director of Slum Dwellers International in Kenya; and Samer Saliba, director of city practice at the Mayors Migration Council. The podcast discusses challenges and lessons from ‘participatory forums' – part of a 3.5-year research project – that bring together different stakeholders and refugee representatives together. Creating a space that encourages deep work for you and your peers, energy management as an introvert, and embracing adversity as a parent. I talk to Samuel Hall as he shares the wisdom and enlightenment he has collated over the years as a high-performing parent. Samuel Hall is the CEO of Rainmaking Asia Pacific Venture Studio. Samuel was born and raised in the UK and started his career as a lawyer before moving to Singapore and building his career across multiple startups and new ventures. In 2016, he found that the Rainmaking APAC venture studio had also launched startup bootcamp, a startup accelerator across Southeast Asia, Japan, and South Korea. Samuel has two daughters, aged three and one. As a present dad to his two daughters, prioritizing his time for family time and work time is vital. Samuel has allocated time for his deep work where he concentrates on his tasks at work and finds time to really think and get inspired. When it’s his wife’s time to do her deep work, it‘s his time to take care of his daughters. This has been a system for their family at home and being cognizant to each other’s time and space for deep work is essential. Samuel is admittedly an introvert disguised as an extrovert, so after numerous hours of dealing with teams and other individuals for work, it can get draining for him. Energy management has played a role in helping him allocate energy for both work and his family to ensure that he has enough for both. As a parent in tech, you will go through many changes and challenges in your life. You will face a number of adversities but you can acknowledge that there is a sense of winning in losing. You learn from your losses and this will help you in your path towards success. Embracing adversity must be a constant thing in life as it shows that we are progressing and moving forward. With Taliban militants now in control of most all of Afghanistan, thousands of civilians facing an uncertain future and possible violence have begun to flee their homes and seek refuge both internally and abroad, adding to a huge swell of previously displaced Afghans. In light of the dangers facing millions of Afghans, MPI Europe hosted an important conversation exploring Europe's possible responses to the situation in Afghanistan and in neighboring countries. Speakers including MPI Europe's Hanne Beirens and Camille Le Coz were joined by UNHCR's Aurvasi Patel and Samuel Hall's Nassim Majidi for a discussion on what European countries should prioritize to address the immediate needs of displaced populations; how can Europe start planning for longer-term assistance to countries in the region who are hosting the vast majority of Afghan refugees; the implications for partnerships with governments in the region; and what safe pathways have other countries opened in recent days to evacuate Afghans who have directly worked with European forces and other individuals at risk. Experts on this webinar also examined how European governments could best prepare to respond to a possible increase in the number of asylum seekers reaching Europe's borders in the next few months. They also discussed what lessons the migration crisis of 2015-16 can offer for European policymakers so they avoid repeating the same mistakes. Welcome to the Migration & Diaspora Podcast with me your host, Loksan Harley. Today I'm joined by Dr Daniela Villacres to talk about the fascinating topic of diaspora engagement in humanitarianism. Daniela specialises on diaspora, remittances, and civic engagement mechanisms in the context of both international development and humanitarian assistance. Daniela has worked on these topics with governments, international organisations, non-profits, and research institutions. She has provided technical assistance on the behalf of the International Organization for Migration on mainstreaming diaspora engagement across multiple sectors, such as climate-induced displacement; and worked with the World Bank to reduce the cost of sending remittances. Throughout her career, Daniela has collaborated extensively with diaspora groups, prioritising the creation of policies and programmes which empower and elevate diaspora voices. Daniela holds a BA from Emory University, an MPhil from the University of Oxford, and a PhD from Brown University. I've known Daniela for a few years now and while I've long known her for her excellent work on migration and development, she is rapidly becoming one of the authorities on the topic of diaspora humanitarianism – or how diasporas' engage in humanitarian responses. It's a topic that's increasingly been popping up in my work on diaspora engagement, particularly since it was spotlighted at the World Humanitarian Summit in 2016. So in this conversation, where I honestly forgot at times that I was recording a podcast episode and not just having an engaging chat with a good friend, we talk about how diasporas respond to humanitarian crises, how their efforts are supported and coordinated (or perhaps not sufficiently coordinated) with the response actions of other humanitarian organisations, and the principles that can ensure effective diaspora humanitarian engagement. There's a lot to get through so without further ado, we hope you enjoy listening! Todays episode is with Samuel Hall a story teller, creative director and inspiring human. Sam has a story touching on his younger years as being a sports driven individual with the focus at the time of becoming a professional sports person, later on Sam found himself with an ACL injury that would not only end his at the time dream, of becoming a professional athlete but also to giving him an opportunity of a life time to help people capture moments, inspire connections and relationships in business and which also lead him to touring around the world with Ziggy Alberts. We talk about creating better business relationships through connection, how influencers are leading the charge for these consumer relationships, being open and transparent in business, what he does to be more creative, how to reconnect with himself, how you can express yourself, saying yes to opportunities even if your scared and how Sam impacted my own life when I first met him two years ago.

As European countries are finding grounds to refuse asylum to more and more Afghans, even children are being sent to Kabul. We use the word "returnees" cautiously, as many Afghans were born outside the country and are being sent 'back' to a country they have never been to. The first detailed research on Afghan child returnees, by Samuel Hall and Save the Children, points to worrying gaps in protection and planning that expose under age returnees to an array of dangers. The findings come at the same time as a Refugees Deeply investigation, The Vulnerability Contest, found Afghan minors in Greece's refugee camps facing possible asylum rejection and return. The Samuel Hall team spoke with 57 Afghan children, finding that nearly three-quarters of them did not feel safe during the returns process; and that more than half reported instances of violence and coercion. Nearly half of the children arrived in Afghanistan alone and on arrival, the children received little or no support. On this episode of Deeply Talks, Samuel Hall’s lead author Marion Guillaume, in Kabul, discusses these findings with Daniel Howden, senior editor of Refugees Deeply and author of our report on Afghan child soldiers in Greece’s asylum system.
On this episode of Deeply Talks, Refugees Deeply's senior editor Preethi Nallu speaks with Will Carter, head of the Norwegian Refugee Council’s Afghanistan program and Nassim Majidi, cofounder of Kabul-based think-tank Samuel Hall, about the conditions for returnees and how to protect them from being displaced all over again.
