Episode Summary: It's Episode 105, and I'm calling this the Tony Womack episode—a tribute to a player I got to know personally while he was coaching my son's high school team. Womack brought incredible energy to the game, and I hope this episode captures some of that as we dive into all things Cubs. The Cubs are off to a hot 9-2 start in spring training, and while wins don't mean much in March, it's been exciting to see young players step up. Today, I tackle a listener mailbag, covering everything from bullpen battles, underrated hitters, and the Cubs' roster depth, to whether the front office made the right moves this offseason. Plus, I'm giving away five Cubs PS Plus hats to some lucky listeners! Key Topics Covered:

Episode Summary: I'm back after a short break—work, life, and some oral surgery kept me away for a bit, but I'm finally able to talk clearly again (well, mostly). In this episode, I break down the Cubs' offseason moves, roster construction, and my grades for each unit heading into 2024. The Cubs made some big changes, from acquiring Kyle Tucker to adding Justin Turner, but did they do enough to contend? I dive into the rotation, bullpen, bench depth, and lineup construction and grade each aspect of the team heading into Opening Day in Japan against the Dodgers. Oh, and PCA is officially wearing #4 now, so let's hope he makes that number mean something for the Cubs! Key Topics Covered:

Andy Martínez and Tony Andracki break down what it means for the Cubs and what comes next.Plus, the Cubs were busy late in December and early in January, adding the likes of Vidal Bruján, Colin Rea, Caleb Thielbar and Matt Festa to the team while parting ways with Matt Mervis, Miles Mastrobuoni and Michael Arias. The addition of Rea brings about several questions for the Cubs rotation while the bullpen is in a curious spot given the sheer number of players without minor-league options.Spring Training is still a month away but there are interesting roster decisions coming for this Cubs team.

Joe Ryan's complete game shutout - the Twins' first in more than five years - headlined a memorable couple of wins at the end of Minnesota's four-game series with the visiting Boston Red Sox. Along with the breakout of Byron Buxton, Ryan's performance was a noteworthy, promising way for the Twins to finalize a split in the series and in the 10-game home stand. David, for one, is beyond optimistic that the first-place Twins (still 38-38 on the year) have finally turned a corner. Dan isn't so sure, given the dubious state of Boston's pitching staff. Dan also still has questions for Rocco Baldelli, though he also praises the way he identified "rock bottom" early in the series. David wonders whether Max Kepler has pulled a Jake Cave, and Dan longs for the return of lefty reliever Caleb Thielbar. They also look around the league at a couple recent instances of catchers "blocking the plate" - or so they were deemed. NCAAFB – Michigan State CB Charles Brantley withdraws from portal Michigan State cornerback Charles Brantley has withdrawn from the transfer portal, team spokesman Ben Phlegar said Tuesday. Brantley’s return allows coach Mel Tucker to retain a key player after losing a pair of standouts on Sunday, when quarterback Payton Thorne and receiver Keon Coleman entered the portal. Brantley started 11 games at cornerback last season, leading the team with six pass breakups and making two interceptions. NCAAFB – 12-team CFP schedule includes New Year’s Day tripleheaders The College Football Playoff released a schedule for the 12-team format that will be used in the 2024 and 2025 seasons, which will feature New Year’s Day quarterfinal tripleheaders but no games played on Saturday. The first-round games will be played the third week of December, with one game on Friday night and three on Saturday. The quarterfinals in the new expanded format will be held on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. The first Jan. 1 tripleheader will be held at Orange, Rose and Sugar Bowls after the 2024 regular season. NCAA – NCAA’s four-year academic progress rate score steady The NCAA’s newest academic progress rate score is steady at 984. That’s despite slight decreases in men’s basketball, football and women’s basketball. Each athlete on each team receives one point each semester they are academically eligible and each semester they remain in school or graduate. The cutline is 930. The NCAA attributes the declines in men’s and women’s basketball and football scores to more players being ineligible to compete during the 2021-22 season instead of those leaving school.  The latest report also shows that more than 20,700 former athletes who left school without degrees have completed their classwork during the 19 years APR scores have been calculated. Nearly half of that total are from men’s and women’s basketball and football.“Excellence is engrained in student-athletes — academically and athletically,” said Central Michigan president Robert Davies, chairman of the Division I committee on academics. “Thousands of former student-athletes are returning to college to complete their degrees, further demonstrating the importance of higher education and exemplifying the fulfillment of earning a college degree.” NFL – Ex-Raider Ruggs taking plea deal, prison in fatal DUI crash Former Las Vegas Raiders player Henry Ruggs will admit that he drove drunk at up to 156 mph before causing a fiery crash that killed a woman. That will mean the 24-year-old first-round NFL draft pick will avoid trial and be sentenced to three to 10 years in state prison. Ruggs spoke in court Tuesday only to acknowledge that he understands the terms of his plea deal. His plea is scheduled May 10, with sentencing to come on another date. A prosecutor endorsed the agreement. Ruggs was dropped by the Raiders shortly after the crash in November 2021. MCCAA – LMC’s Robinson name MCCAA Softball Player of the Week Lake Michigan College freshman Hailey Robinson was named the Michigan Community College Softball Player of the Week.   The Red Hawks catcher and outfielder batted .500 for the week with 2 doubles, a triple, 3 home runs, and 12 rbis.  She also scored 6 times and stole 12 bases.  Hailey is a graduate of St. Joseph high school where she played softball, basketball, and volleyball for the Bears. Tonight Philadelphia 76ers at Boston Celtics, 8:00 p.m.                        (PHI leads 1-0) NBA – NBA MVP: 76ers’ Embiid wins league’s top individual honor Philadelphia 76ers center and league scoring champion Joel Embiid earned his first NBA Most Valuable Player trophy Tuesday, topping two-time winner Nikola Jokic of the Denver Nuggets. Embiid averaged 33.1 points to win his second straight scoring title, averaged 10.2 rebounds and tied a career high with 4.2 assists per game. Embiid played in 66 games, the second-highest total of his career. MJ Melendez led off the game with a home run for Kansas City, and Cabrera hit a two-run shot in the bottom of the inning. Scheduled Tigers starter Matt Manning was scratched just before game time because of arm fatigue. Will Vest pitched the first inning, allowing Melendez’s homer, and the next six relievers combined for eight shutout innings. Gregory Soto pitched the ninth for his 29th save. The Tigers need one win in their last eight games to avoid 100 losses. Twins 8, White Sox 4 – Wallner’s 3 RBIs help Twins send Sox to 8th straight loss Minnesota rookie Matt Wallner drove in a career-high three runs and Gio Urshela and Jake Cave each had three hits as the Twins beat Chicago 7-4, sending the White Sox to their eighth straight loss. Jose Miranda added an RBI double for the Twins. They tied the White Sox for second in the AL Central at 76-79. Cleveland blew by both of them over the last three weeks to clinch the division with 10 days left. Caleb Thielbar got the win in relief. Johnny Cueto lost his fourth straight start for the White Sox. Cubs 4, Phillies 2 – Nola gives up key homer as Phillies lose 4-2 to Cubs Aaron Nola surrendered Christopher Morel’s three-run homer in the fifth inning, and the Philadelphia Phillies lost 4-2 to the Chicago Cubs. Philadelphia dropped its fourth consecutive game. Trying for their first playoff appearance since 2011, the Phillies are just a half-game ahead of Milwaukee for the third NL wild card. Nola was charged with four runs — all in the fifth — and five hits in six innings. The right-hander struck out eight and walked none. Chicago won for the seventh time in eight games. Today Kansas City (Heasley 4-8) at Detroit (Rodriguez 4-5), 1:10 p.m.           WSJM/WCSY 6:20 Chicago White Sox (Giolito 10-9) at Minnesota (Varland 0-2), 1:10 p.m. Philadelphia (Suárez 10-5) at Chicago Cubs (Assad 1-2), 2:20 p.m. MLB – Yankees star Judge hits 61st home run, ties Maris’ AL record Aaron Judge tied Roger Maris’ American League record of 61 home runs in a season, hitting a tiebreaking, two-run drive for the New York Yankees in the seventh inning that led them over Toronto Blue Jays 8-3. The 30-year-old slugger drove a 94.5 mph belt-high sinker with a full-count from Tim Mayza over the left-field fence at Rogers Centre. The 117.4 mph drive took just 3.8 seconds to land 394 feet from the plate. and it put the Yankees ahead 5-3. Judge watched the ball clank off the stands, just below two fans who reached over a railing. MLB – Fans miss 61 HR ball, Jays bullpen coach gets it to Judge When Aaron Judge’s American League record-tying 61st home run dropped into Toronto’s bullpen, coach Matt Buschmann picked it up. He and Blue Jays closer Jordan Romano passed it to Yankees reliever Zack Britton, who made sure it got to Judge. The coach’s wife, Fox Sports reporter and former ESPN anchor Sara Walsh, joked on Twitter that she was announcing a divorce before adding she was joking and her husband decided Judge and Roger Maris’ family should get the ball, Frankie Lasagna was one of two fans who almost caught the drive. MLB – Maris Jr: Bonds, McGwire illegitimate, Judge to be HR king Roger Maris Jr. considers the home run feats of Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa to be illegitimate and says Aaron Judge should be recognized as the holder of the big league season standard if the New York Yankees slugger hits No. 62. Maris says "baseball needs to look at the records.” In 1961, Roger Maris broke the record of 60 set by Babe Ruth in 1927. Maris’ mark stood until McGwire hit 70 in 1998, and that was topped by Barry Bonds’ 73 in 2001. McGwire admitted using steroids, while Bonds and Sosa maintained they didn’t knowingly use PEDs. NFL – National Football League – Week 4 Last Night Miami Dolphins at Cincinnati Bengals, 8:15 p.m. NFL – Displaced Bucs avoid Ian, begin preparation to face Chiefs The Tampa Bay Buccaneers moved their football operations to South Florida to avoid Hurricane Ian and remain hopeful of being able to return home to play the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday night. The team practiced at the Miami Dolphins’ training facility on Wednesday. The Bucs insisted the disruption to their normal routine will not hinder their ability to prepare for the team they beat in the Super Bowl two seasons ago. Family members, and even some pets, accompanied players and coaches in relocating ahead of the storm making landfall on Florida’s west coast.  The NFL has plans in place to move the game to Minnesota if the game cannot be played in Tampa. NHL – National Hockey League – Preseason Last Night Chicago Blackhawks 4, Detroit Red Wings 2 NCAAFB – Progress made but how soon CFP expands still up in the air The administrators who’ve been given the task of expanding the College Football Playoff from four to 12 teams left their latest in-person meetings outside Chicago with the biggest question unanswered: How soon? The CFP management committee is scheduled to convene again Oct. 20 in Dallas. The members expect to get some work done before then by video conference. But whether the logistical hurdles can be cleared to implement a new format as soon as 2024 is unclear. The playoff will definitely expand by 2026, but the management committee has been tasked with trying to flip the format for the 2024 and ’25 seasons. NCAAFB – Big 10 – Northwestern unveils plans for new football stadium Northwestern unveiled plans to build a new Ryan Field and replace the current 97-year-old football stadium with a state-of-the-art facility featuring a reduced seating capacity and greater emphasis on the fan experience. The school said the stadium would seat 35,000, down more than 12,000 from the current Ryan Field, and feature a canopy designed to keep noise and light focused on the field. It would include cutting-edge technology and scoreboards, as well as concessions with food from local restaurants. Northwestern said the stadium would achieve Gold LEED certification, and “set a new standard” for accessibility. The plan calls for plazas outside, a community park and other green spaces. Northwestern said it is also considering hosting “a limited number” of concerts. NCAAFB – Penn State to begin selling beer at football games Penn State announced that beer will be available for sale to the general public at Beaver Stadium beginning Saturday when the Nittany Lions host Northwestern. Penn State becomes the ninth Big Ten school to sell beer to the general public at football games. The ones that don’t are Michigan, Michigan State, Nebraska, Northwestern and Wisconsin. Beer will be sold in all areas of the stadium, except near the student section. Fans can buy two cans of beer at one time, and sales will stop at the end of the third quarter. FIBA – Thomas helps US top Serbia 88-55, advance to World Cup semis Alyssa Thomas had 13 points, 14 rebounds and seven assists to help the United States beat Serbia 88-55 in the quarterfinals of the women’s World Cup. Kelsey Plum scored 17 points and A’ja Wilson added 15 to lead the Americans, who will face Canada in the semifinals on Friday. The Americans used a 12-0 run to close the half and break open a tight game. Golf – LIV – LIV Golf denies report of deal to buy TV time on FS1 Saudi-funded LIV Golf is denying a report that it was close to a U.S. television deal in which it would buy time to be shown on FS1. Golfweek is citing sources as saying LIV Golf is nearing an agreement to buy time. LIV Golf issued a statement that the report was “incomplete and inaccurate,” and that it is ahead of schedule in its inaugural year, including such areas as broadcast rights. If a deal is imminent, it wasn’t clear when it would start. Fox Sports had no comment. Media companies typically pay a sports league for the right to broadcast events. The 30-year-old slugger drove a 94.5 mph belt-high sinker with a full-count from Tim Mayza over the left-field fence at Rogers Centre. He and Blue Jays closer Jordan Romano passed it to Yankees reliever Zack Britton, who made sure it got to Judge. In a time buy, the league is responsible for paying for the time on air, along with the cost of production and selling advertising. The Minnesota Twins had multiple opportunities to build a bigger lead, protect said lead, and win game one over the Chicago White Sox at Guaranteed Rate Field. They missed those chances and lost on a walk-off groundout from José Abreu in the ninth. Sonny Gray left the game with hamstring tightness and the Twins' bullpen was forced to make up five innings on the backend. It was going well until Caleb Thielbar surrendered a game-tying solo homer to Yasmani Grandal in the eighth. In the ninth, benches cleared as Jorge López hit Andrew Vaughn, loading the bases. The Twins are 67-63 and remain one game back of the Cleveland Guardians in the American League Central. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! The Twins' chances looked dire early again Tuesday when Eloy Jiménez ripped a two-run, first inning double into the left field gap. Those were the only runs Chicago would score all night. The Twins chipped away and benefitted from a José Abreu dropped ball at first and clutch pinch extra-base hits from Jake Cave (triple) and Luis Arráez (double). Byron Buxton kept the game in reach when he leaped and stole an Edwin Encarnación home run in centerfield. Buxton wasn't done contributing.
