Rumors were already swirling about the Astros and sign-stealing when people on the inside tipped off reporter Evan Drellich with damning details of the scheme. Evan Drellich, author of "Winning Fixes Everything: How Baseball's Brightest Minds Created Sports' Biggest Mess." Drellich is the sportswriter who broke the story of the Houston Astros' cheating scandal.
Today's episode is all about sports. First, The Athletic reporter Evan Drellich speaks with NPR's A Martinez about his investigation into the Astros' 2017 World Series win and subsequent cheating scandal, which is closely examined in Drellich's new book, Winning Fixes Everything. Then, NPR's Juana Summers sits down with former NFL player Colin Kaepernick to discuss his new graphic memoir, Change the Game, which revisits how growing up idolizing Black football players led Kaepernick to pick that sport over his promising future in baseball.
In his new book 'Winning Fixes Everything,' author Evan Drellich details the corporate culture that led to the Houston Astros sign-stealing quagmire and probes how many of the leading executives got their start in baseball with the Cardinals. Drellich joins St. Louis Post-Dispatch baseball writer Derrick Goold to discuss new insight into the hacking scandal that will forever bind the Astros and Cardinals, the baseball operations approach that former Cardinals exec Jeff Luhnow created in Houston, and how organizational arrogance may have led to negligence. Drellich, a senior writer at The Athletic who along with Ken Rosenthal broke the story on Houston's trashcan caper during the 2017 season, explores the reporting on that story and the fallout from it, including how baseball clubs are reluctant to talk about their "trade secrets" and why that's bad for the game, bad for storytelling, and yet ignored because without the sign-stealing the Astros' winning would have lacquered over everything. The Best Podcast in Baseball, sponsored by Closets by Design of St. Louis, is a production of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, StlToday.com, and Derrick Goold. Episode 279 of the Sports Media Podcast features Tashan Reed, a staff writer for The Athletic covering the Las Vegas Raiders and the host of the upcoming podcast series from The Athletic, “Between The Lines.” He is followed by Evan Drellich, a senior writer who covers the business of baseball for The Athletic and is the author of a new book, “Winning Fixes Everything: How Baseball's Brightest Minds Created Sports' Biggest Mess.” In this podcast, Reed discusses his narrative podcast about what it means to be Black in the NFL and explains how race impacts each level of the league's organization chart; why this was a topic he wanted to immerse himself in; the processing of reporting and the interview subjects for the piece; whether the NFL has any incentive to change on race, and more. Drellich discusses why the story of Astros cheating scandal is important; Mike Fiers as a whistleblower and his impact on the reporting; whether baseball is truly interested in policing this; MLB condoning Jim Crane and why so many have been protective of him; the Wall Street–ization and McKinseyization of front offices and of player personnel decision-making; if the ends justify the means in sports; the smart book-buying public, and more. Evan Drellich is out for blood again, this time accusing the Red Sox of looking at video of the signs in the replay room to then signal to Sox hitters during their 2018 World Series championship winning season. Safe to say we can see what Drellich is up to now. Today we talk how the report clearly targeted the Red Sox when other teams were doing this, if Cora will face any kind of suspension, give Drellich a call to address these claims, preview Winter Weekend with it being one week away, give another Mookie update, call out Hubbs for his dumb tweet on Miguel Andujar thank Sox Signatures for everything they meant to this show and much more. Enjoy!
An exclusive report from The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal and Evan Drellich reveals that the Boston Red Sox used video replay rooms to steal pitchers signs during the 2018 season, the year the team last won the World Series. Three people who were with the organization in 2018 told The Athletic that players would visit the replay room during games, learn signs and communicate them to batters at the plate through some intricate foot signals from runners on base. Since the story was published Major League Baseball announced it is launching an investigation into the Red Sox conduct. You can read Rosenthal and Drellich's story here: https://theathletic.com/1510673/2020/01/07/mlbs-sign-stealing-controversy-broadens-sources-say-the-red-sox-used-video-replay-room-illegally-in-2018/?source=theleadpodcast
