BrainWaves is an academic audio podcast whose mission is to educate medical providers through clinical cases and topical reviews in neurology, medicine, and the humanities, and episodes originally aired from 2016 to 2021. Originally released: July 18, 2017 This week, we are taking a break from educational neurology and will be stressing the importance of collaboration between patients and physicians. Physicians are critical to healthcare because of their expertise and experience, but medical management is a team sport. It is equally important to incorporate the patient's needs and opinions into the equation. But this leaves us with the concept of "therapeutic privilege," specifically how much does the physician need to tell the patient about his or her own health? In this episode, Jim Siegler steps into the shoes of one of his good friends who has faced a recent cancer diagnosis. BrainWaves podcasts and online content are intended for medical education only and should not be used to guide medical decision-making in routine clinical practice. John Patrick Green is a brilliant wordsmith who creates witty and engaging stories and pictures in this graphic novel series. The InvestiGators is full of fun word play, witty phrases and unexpected plot twist. It is a great series for young and older readers alike. My kids love this and it is one of the things that helps lessen the sting of finishing a book and having to wait on the next one to be released. Here are the books in the series that we have read so far and highly recommended. 1. InvestiGators 2. InvestiGators: Take the Plunge 3. InvestiGators: Off the Hook 4. InvestiGators: Ant In Our P.A.N.T.S 5. InvestiGators: Braver and Boulder 6. InvestiGators: Heist and Seek Also coming out in February 21, 2023 John Patrick Green is starting a spin off series call Agents of S.U.I.T which follows some of Brash and Mango's co-workers. We are excited to check see where this new series will take the Agents of S.U.I.T. The seventh book of the InvestiGators is also coming out this year. It is called InvestiGators: All Tide Up and is set to be released September 26, 2023. You're listening to the Westerly Sun's podcast, where we talk about the best local events, new job postings, obituaries, and more. First, a bit of Rhode Island trivia. Today's trivia is brought to you by Perennial. Perennial's new plant-based drink “Daily Gut & Brain” is a blend of easily digestible nutrients crafted for gut and brain health. A convenient mini-meal, Daily Gut & Brain” is available now at the CVS Pharmacy in Wakefield. Now for some trivia. Did you know that Rhode Island native, Donald Panciera, was an American football quarterback, halfback, and defensive back in the All-America Football Conference and the National Football League? He played professionally for the New York Yankees, the Detroit Lions, and the Chicago Cardinals. In college, he played for the Boston College Eagles and the San Francisco Dons. Now for our feature story: The numbers tell the story of Westerly Hospital's turnaround and resurgence during the five years it has been part of the Yale New Haven Health system. Patrick Green, the hospital's president and CEO, discussed strides the facility has made during a recent interview. At the start of Yale's ownership in September 2016, Westerly Hospital posted 2,500 patient contacts per year. The number has grown to 4,580 this year. Outpatient patient contacts have grown from 102,000 in 2016 to 128,000 year. Surgeries performed at the hospital on Wells Street have increased from 280 to 700 per year, and the average daily patient census has grown from 29 to 62. Green attributes the growth to the Yale system's commitment to the Westerly region through expansion of programs and services, physician recruitment, investments in new medical equipment, as well as in renovations and other physical plant improvements. Green said: "Everything that we've done has really been following through on our commitment to this growth in Westerly Hospital and making it a viable hospital for the people of Westerly," In addition to new facilities, the hospital has added a state-of-the-art hospital pharmacy that meets the needs of both the cancer center and the hospital at large, acquisition of a da Vinci Xi Surgical System robot, and a complete upgrade of the cardiac catheter laboratory. In all, the Yale system injected more than $78 million into the facility during its first five years of ownership. For more about the coronavirus pandemic, the recovery, and the latest on all things in and around Westerly, head over to westerlysun.com. Today we're remembering the life of Ralph Parise. He was the devoted husband of Natalie for 59 years. Born in Westerly, Ralph worked locally as a union mason for many years until his retirement. He was a communicant of Our Lady of Victory Church and a US Army Veteran. Ralph was a life member of the Westerly Yacht Club, the Calabrese Society and the Westerly Lodge of Elks BPOE #678. He was also a member of the North End Social Club. His days were filled spending time with his family especially his granddaughter Grace. He always said "she was his angel from heaven". He will be dearly missed by his wife, his two children, his granddaughter as well as many nieces and nephews. Thank you for taking a moment with us today to remember and celebrate Ralph's life. That's it for today, we'll be back next time with more! Also, remember to check out our sponsor Perennial, Daily Gut & Brain, available at the CVS on Main St. in Wakefield! On February 22nd, NASA released video footage of the car-sized Rover Perseverance, landing on the surface of Mars. After a journey of seven months and 293 million miles, the robot vehicle finally reached the red planet, with the aim of searching for ancient signs of life on Mars. A couple of weeks later, Elon Musk’s company Space X tested a prototype of Starship, a vehicle meant to enable mass interplanetary travel, and the eventual colonisation of other planets by humans. This, according to Musk, would be an insurance policy against possible events like nuclear war or an asteroid collision, that could wipe out all of humanity if we were to remain on Earth. But is it ethically justifiable for a government to spend billions of dollars on sending a remote control robot to Mars, when that money could be spent on improving the lives of its citizens? Should we leave space exploration to eccentric private individuals, or does that compromise humanity’s future in space? Would it be OK to try and change the surface and atmosphere of Mars, to suit our human needs? And what ethical framework should we apply to our potential future interactions with alien forms of life, if they have evolved in radically different ways from life on Earth? Brian Patrick Green is the director of technology ethics at the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics at Santa Clara University, in California’s Silicon Valley. In his forthcoming book, Space Ethics, he explores many of the moral questions that arise from a future of space exploration. This is a different kind of episode. You can’t see this movie yet, well at least not with some difficulty. This is a feature that I saw at the Portland Horror Film Festival, and it was by far my favorite. This will be available for streaming probably at the end of the year. It’s making the festival run right now, so if you can catch it at one, definitely do. Here is the Trailer. Dustin Goebel, the man, the myth, the @dgoebel00 on intstagram made this. (0:40) - Intro(7:08) - Trailer(9:19) - Synopsis(9:54) - Review(18:15) - Score(29:03) - Spoilers(1:03:13) - Final Recommendations(1:03:49) - Interview with Derek Carl and Hank Huffman(1:35:14) - Taglines(1:40:17) - Outro https://youtu.be/w-KbcVlzn1s Synopsis The Brain That Wouldn’t Die tells the story of mad scientist/surgeon Bill Cortner as he tries to defy the laws of nature and resurrect the dead. In a tragic car accident, Bill’s wife Jan is decapitated and he rushes to save her head with science! While Jan’s disembodied head begs to die, Bill and his lab assistant Kurt search far and wide for the perfect replacement body for his wife. Preferably one with big ol titties. UP TOP! Review of The Brain That Wouldn't Die (2020) The Brain that Wouldn’t Die is a loving remake to the 1962 film of the same name. You might recognise it from Mystery Science Theater 3000, when they lambasted the original reanimated head-on-a-table film. The Original on MST3K This film is surprisingly faithful to the original with a lot of the original dialogue, but with a distinctly more humorous tone. It’s in the realm of B-Movie homage comedy/horror films like Re-Animator and Young Frankenstein. That may sound like hyperbole, but this film is very similar to those two, and really funny. Most impressive is how well they pulled off this film with an estimated $80,000 budget. To give you a sense of how little that is, the original that was actually filmed in 1959 had a budget of an estimated $62,000, which would be over half of a million in 2020 dollars. The Brain That Wouldn't Die (2020) Poster The lead played by Patrick Green is pitch perfect, and the acting from the rest of the cast really sells the serious, but not serious tone of the movie. Score 8/10 MST3K The Brain That Wouldn't DieSince you can't watch this version, let the MST3k episode tide you over.Buy/Stream Now Final Recommendation Definitely go see it if you can. If you are a fan of Mel Brooks style humor, this is well worth your time to seek out. Look for it at film festivals near you, and on streaming services later this year. Spoilers Expand for Spoilers It's kind of silly to care about spoilers on a remake of a 60 year old movie, but here are some points of discussion that we had on the episode. The opening black and white credits are copied from the original film. This is underscored by the original music. This really sets the stage for a 50s-60s B-Movie experience The tone of the film is established right out of the gate. The acting is intentional overacting, and sight-gags start immediately. As Bill is performing a surgery in the opening scene, a comical amount of perfectly timed blood sprays directly into his eyes. The next sight gag, which is a favorite of the writer producer Hank Huffman, is the two doctors ripping off their scrubs to reveal full suits and ties underneath. A lot of the dialogue is taken directly from the original movie. Even seemingly comedic lines like "our baby isn't going to be a test tube baby" is in the original. Some of my favorite lines are: The response to "let me die" is "we should do as she asks""I am the only man in the world capable of reviving a human head.""She's been decapitated", "What!?", "it means beheaded""never mind her, she's recovering from a brain injury."
