What's up, So, you know, I was really intrigued by one of the uh one of the callers before saying, you know, the way to the governor chip is pledged to open up offshore and, you know, that's all great. Yeah. 00:30 And I really like some of the things Ralph Norman has said, what he's going to do. And my question is how? And frankly speaking, what I want to hear as a pledge from uh a candidate for governor is that they will declare that they will sign no legislation until the open primary system is eliminated. Because until we do that, we've got this 00:59 chicken and egg thing. Yeah. Oh gee, if we get out there and vote, we'll put better people in and we'll close the primaries or gee, we can't close the primaries because we got crap people in legislature. Somebody needs to force it by shock. And I don't know if this will work or not, but it's what I want to hear. Here's the thing though. I mean, even our governor right now, Henry McMaster, he's not for opening the primaries. I mean, for closing the primaries, he's for them open. 01:28 And he has said that he will veto any bill that comes to his desk to close the primaries. Isn't that interesting? is why we need a governor who says he will veto any bill, any and all bills, until the legislature closes the primaries. We've got to force action. You know, Doug, I'm not opposed to that. I appreciate it. But here, and you got to go back to what he opened up his comments with about the whole chicken and the egg thing. 01:58 You've got, and I told you yesterday, that the people that are really getting the primary heat right now, and we've just had the filing just, I mean, it just started, it's about to end, but filing didn't start, just started a few weeks ago. 02:18 The establishment is the one that's really getting the heat. The people in there with the Freedom Caucus, the folks that want to close the primaries, the people that want good conservative legislation, they're not really getting a whole lot of pushback. They're not getting a whole lot of people standing up against them. It's the establishment. 02:41 that is getting all the pushback. Now here's the deal. This is where you come in and you have got to get out and vote on June 9th because that is what 11 weeks, I believe 11 weeks from today. We're be going to the polls and we're gonna be voting to see who the candidates are. And I would think about 95 % of these races, the candidate that wins the primary goes on to win in the general election. With very few exceptions, that happened. 03:11 So you getting out and voting is going to be the number one thing you can do. First of all, make sure that our state legislature is more conservative than it is. And number two, it will make sure that our governor is the most conservative governor that we can actually get. Then we might see some things changing here in this state. But as we stand right now, the weird part is 03:38 is because way back in the day when the Democrats ruled this state, they were so afraid that a black person 03:47 might win the governor's seat that they made sure that the governor's office had very little power. That's why our state legislature is actually more powerful than the governor here in South Carolina, one of a handful of states that is like that. I wouldn't mind seeing that to be a little more balanced. I wouldn't mind seeing the governor having a little more responsibility than he does here in South Carolina and a little more authority. 04:17 That to me would be possibly a good thing. I know we might be down the road, might have some weird things happen and it might come back to bite us, I would like to, because right now it's already come back to bite us. H2 - Segment 3 - Mon Aug 18 - SC House District 17 Mike Burns Well, everybody talks about, closing the primaries, but how many people are actually doing something about it? Joining us right now is, a state representative from the from the Seventeenth District, Mike Burns. Representative Burns, welcome to the program. Hope you're doing well. I am doing well, and I appreciate getting the chance to, talk on your show a little bit about a couple of bills. I hope that, we'll be getting some hearings on them when we go back in January. I filed for many years, I filed the, closed the primary bill, I think, thirteen years now. 13 bill Murphy, thirty three ten. And then I've also filed multiple times. This year's version is, house bill thirty three eleven, which would, bring in watermark paper ballots. So That is and well, let's get to that in just a second. But the the thirteen years you've been filing the these bills, has it surprised you how much pushback you've gotten against closing the primaries here in South Carolina? I'm shocked. There's a, Republican platform issue written in the documents for the state Republican platform. Right. And we have a, we have a huge majority in the, state legislature, a super majority in both houses. Mhmm. And we can't get a hearing on it. And I can tell you why, but you'll have to ask me before I tell you why. Tell us why. Well, many years ago, we had a different, judiciary committee chair. And one of the first years when I filed it, I found out it was never going anywhere. And the the proverbial question is, why not? You know, it's a republican platform issue. Many people across the state are interested in doing this. And the answer I got was some of us can't get reelected if we pass this through. And so it's staying in the trash can. So instead of doing trash can for thirteen years. Instead of doing what the people of South Carolina want, they're just they're too busy covering their necks? Apparently so. That was the answer that, came back. And I can tell you that senator Corbyn who preceded me in the house before he went to the senate, I happen to remember that he filed it before I got down there and filed it. So it's been multiple people who've worked on this, and I'm sure we're not the only two that have worked on it. Let's talk about closing the primary bill first. What now we know that there has been a bill prefiled, but this really doesn't go as far as everybody wants it to because it's still it's pretty ambiguous. Right? The one that was was filed earlier well, late in last session? Well, I filed this one on the first day of pre filing. Mhmm. It's not got any press, obviously. There's another bill that's a closed primary bill, but it doesn't go far as this bill goes. Right. Two differences. The differences between the two are the other bill will let independence crossover without penalty and vote as Republicans. My bill will only let Republicans elect Republicans in the primary and then, of course, in the general, anybody can vote how they want to. Sure. Sure. But if you vote okay. So, have you gotten a lot of support? Because Sarita Edgerton, posted something today over on Twitter or Facebook or something. She said basically the same thing you did that when she talked about this bill, somebody standing next to her said if this gets passed, I'm never gonna get reelected. I mean, that Yeah. That's I mean, that's Serita is the cosponsor on the bill. Steven Frank is. Josiah Magnuson and I are on the bill. Bill Cholmonde supports it. We got we got a lot of local people that support this. I could go on and on and on. Well, how could the local people here don't match up with the rest of the state. Well, that's what I I wanna get to now. How can the people of the Upstate help you out in getting this bill passed? Well, here's what's happened that, is probably not known, but I was, encouraged to file a letter on the last day of session when we left in May, asking for demanding ...

Why Did It Take So Long to Arrest An SC Lawmaker Charged With Distributing Videos of Men Raping Babies?   Investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell are accustomed to being disgusted by politicians who happily take part in the Good Ole Boy system when it comes to protecting bad actors from taking accountability. But this latest case has them screaming with anger.  Last month, South Carolina state Rep. Robert John “RJ” May III was arrested and charged with 10 federal counts of distributing child sex abuse materials. So why is it taking so long for RJ May to be removed from office? Why was there so much hesitation and delay before arresting him? Investigative journalists and co-hosts of True Sunlight Podcast Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell and attorney Eric Bland discuss the heinous details contained in court documents about what suspended South Carolina Representative RJ May has been accused of doing and why it was important for the U.S. Attorney's Office to get so graphic.  Over the course of five days in 2024, RJ May is accused of sharing 220 different child-sex abuse videos — including videos of babies being raped, bestiality with children and sex acts between toddlers and grown women and men. He shared those videos 479 times with other “like-minded pedophiles,” according to court records.  Even more stunning is that while the FBI conducted its investigation, RJ May remained a lawmaker and even got re-elected — despite the powers that be allegedly being aware of the nature of that investigation. Well, in usual fashion, the, folks in the state legislature, well, they found some money, little over a billion and a half dollars, and, looks like they spent it. What was, some of the sticking points there? The house and the senate And the senate. Yeah. Passed it today. Mhmm. The senate voted I think all but five voted, voted for it. So for me, I had said if there's any money going to planned parenthood in it, I would not vote for the budget. That was my main sticking point. Right. Not 1¢. And since it's still part of our public employees benefits, the PEBA, that is still in there until Trump and, maybe eradicates it from Medicaid through the this big beautiful bill thing that they've been they were talking about up there in Washington. So that was my main sticking point, and that's what I had said when I campaigned that I would not vote for it as long as that was in there. But there were other things like, $13,200,000 for a Green New Deal battery center building for the University of South Carolina to study batteries for Wow. Electric vehicles. Okay. $18,000,000 for MUSC to build a walkway over a highway, which comes out to, like, $350 a foot. Good night. Yes. $4,000,000 more in our tax dollars going to Hollywood subsidy Hollywood film, people to subsidize the film, companies of of Woke Hollywood. That's on top of what we already give them. Right. So there were some other things. The, human the human affairs, agency is getting two more full time employees at the tune of $87,000 a year and eight Oh. $80,000 a year. Those are two full time employees. So those are some sticking points. But the the main sticking point from most of my constituents is the, of course, perceived pay raise, which, everybody knows, which was in there. And so it passed today, both the house and the senate. It's pretty unbelievable. Just take a look at the, the vote board here. Was that, 88 yes, 25 no's? Correct. Which is the most that's ever voted against the budget. Wow. Well, making headway there. Still got a long way to go. But but what gets me is I I will promise you that just about everybody that voted for this also campaigned on, defunding planned parenthood. Right? Oh, a lot of people. Yeah. You know, there are people on that green in the green that that did not vote for that. But a a lot of conservatives, for sure, want to defund Planned Parenthood, but that's in this budget. It's it is pretty amazing. But and and the big question is, how do we keep spending like this and cut taxes? Well, that's a very good question because the, the budget advisory committee, the BEA is what we I can't remember what what it actually stands for. But, the they found this 1 and a half billion dollar not found. They estimated Yeah. That there will be an actual 1 and a half billion dollar surplus next year. But to me, that's not the state's money. As far as I can tell, the state does not manufacture or produce any goods that they can sell to make money. The state only has tax dollars that come from tax paying citizens. And so that money that they found, quote, unquote, to spend is not state's money. It's the taxpayers' money. And now while one of the committee members said, well, we didn't spend all of it. Yeah. They still spent $600,000,000 of it. Right. And, we're we're estimating they said no pork, but there's gonna be pork in this from different agencies. Sure. It's just all hidden in there. It's just it's just it's insane what goes on down here in Columbia. When you were basically dressed down, was it Mike Kaski that that dressed you down about nobody really reads these bills in Columbia? Yes, sir. Have your has that really opened your eyes about how that organization is run? Yes, sir. There have been several times when people have come running down the aisle ...
