I have met so many smart women, and have been one myself, who can show up strong and capable in their work, and for their friends and family, and even appear to be happy and physically healthy, but when it comes to their relationships, the make unhealthy, sabotaging sometimes even toxic choices for themselves. Why do we stay in and choose unhealthy relationships? Why do smart people who are successful at work, good people to their families and friends struggle when it comes to their love life? Why does a person keep making the same bad choices and mistakes in who they choose as romantic partners or friends? The short answer - at the root of all relationship settling, self sacrifice and self sabotage is a lack of self love. I know this because I've lived it, watched too many friends go through it and watch their children make the same mistakes. Living a life guided by purpose depends on self-love. Being kind and gentle and compassionate with ourselves is so important, and yet, it's so difficult. Self-love is a practice, and it's something we need to develop. We often treat others with great love and resist treating ourselves the same way, but it's critical that we do this as part of our self-care. In today's episode I interview Stacey Hoffer, Self-Love Guide, and we discuss the importance of self-love, why it's so hard for so many of us, and what we can do about it. Self-love is a path, a practice, and a choice. Stacey breaks this down and shows how we can overcome our old patterns and our upbringing and increase our own self-love. Sarah Steckler: After a cross country move, Sarah was surprised to notice a shift in her moods. Things got progressively worse. She describes her desire to “get better,” to overcome her debilitating depression, and her desire to make change happen. Sarah now channels her experience to help others through depression, as well as other challenges, without judgement. Q & A Why is self love important to you? Self love is important to me because it’s all about building awareness with yourself. It’s really developing a relationship with yourself. What was the number one thing that was holding you back from accepting self love? I think it was that I didn’t need it, that it was kind of fluffy. . . that I was tough enough that I didn’t need to take care of myself that way. Who is one person who has changed your life for the better? It sounds cliché, but it has to be, and is, my husband. What is the best advice you have ever received? My dad always told me that in life, there are a lot of different decisions you have to make. He always told me it’s okay to make different decisions in life, as long as it’s not something that crushes your soul. What is a self care habit that you practice regularly? Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR) is something I listen to while I am working or when I am trying to fall asleep. There are videos on You Tube. I highly recommend searching for Gentle Whispering. She’s a great place to start. Do you have a favorite quote? “We must embrace pain, and burn it as fuel for our journey.” Kenji Miyazawa What book are you reading right now? The Opposite of Love, by Julie Buxbaum. What is the one thing that you are most passionate about? Learning and reading.
